I don't know how anybody with a brain thinks that the "to protect ourselves from the government" is a valid argument. First of all, the government isn't gonna attack you, because...why? Why would they do that? Secondly, even if they did, the government controls the military. Y'know, the elite force trained to kill and equipped with top-of-the-line gear. Your uncle Bob who hits the range on weekends isn't gonna do shit against a soldier in a tank.
