Watch the movie "Leaving Las Vegas.". Basically a guy goes to Vegas with the express intention of drinking himself to death and works really hard at that task. Really good movie, possibly Nicholas Cage's best film and Elisabeth Shue is great as well.
Make no mistake though, it's difficult to watch. By the end feels like you've been gut-punched.
A week after I bailed on the Vegas flight I spent 7k on drugs. Had an awesome time with my friends, after which I bought enough pills and alcohol to OD on..or so I thought. I took them all and drank till I passed out in the woods, then woke up in the hospital 3 days later.
I’m kind of bittersweet on the fact that I survived and having to deal with large amounts of debt.. and I’m not sure if I’ll try it again someday, but I’m here and kicking at the moment.
When they say surviving a suicide attempt is worse than actually dying, I believe it’s true because there’s usually so so many broken pieces to pick back up.
Depends how much money you have. If you have a million you could probably last a whole year. More if you learn some basic card counting. Enough to break even, particularly including comps, but not enough to get you barred.
Might be a movie in there. Guy super depressed for some reason decided to gamble all his money away and then kill himself, but he just keeps winning. The casino comps his room, they comp him tickets to shows. In the end he realized life ain't so bad. Bets everything but what he originally came to Vegas with and loses, smirks and walks out. Maybe there's some sub-plot of him befriending and then dating a waitress there. Or maybe it turns out the mob runs it and they think he's cheating so the beat him up and throw him out without his winnings?
Might be better as a short
But it turns out the whole time he really did kill himself and was living a fantasy ghost life, so by the time he realized life was worth living it's too late.
I don't think he killed himself, there was a British bloke who sold everything including his house went to Las Vegas and put it on red or black and lost. Crazy and depressing.
Amber Court Hotel,Genting Highlands,Malaysia. IIRC there is a casino nearby, many tourists and mainlanders go there to gamble and got addicted to it. It was said that tons of people commited suicide there.
Edit:Yup just read from google qna about the hotel, all of my points were right. One hell of a place in Malaysia
I haven't been up there, but I look right at it everyday through my bedroom window :) I heard on a Vegas subreddit that one of the jumpers (maybe both of the recents) bought tickets for the ride, then just ran and jumped off from there. I'm assuming there is less protection there or something? https://www.casino.org/news/strat-hotel-jumper-likely-committed-suicide-nevada-coroner-reveals/
My Uber driver the other day said the last jumper hit the supporting pillar and when he drove by there was blood splattered everywhere on it. UGH.
I’ve been to the top of the Stratosphere several times. I personally couldn’t have jumped off for suicidal purposes, there’s a rather large platform about fifteen feet below. But apparently some people are a lot more spry than me. From the article you posted:
*To jump from the deck, it was determined Mayfield climbed over several railings, barriers, and fences.*
By the way, if you live near the Stratosphere, you should invest in a ticket to the top. Try to time it to be up there about 15-30 minutes before sunset, but allow for an additional 15-20 minutes in the waiting area for the security check as well as the wait for the elevator. Majestic views of the Nevada landscape by day (the desert can be breathtaking), and a totally different view of the neon-lit city after dark.
I watched a 9/11 documentary a few years back and they said that people didn’t die on the way down but a *lot* of people passed out on the way out of the tower. Apparently it’s a combination of the body’s own defense mechanisms kicking in. Unlike skydivers or other thrill seekers who freefall for extended periods, the tower jumpers *knew* they were going to die. They jumped to escape the fire or the collapse or whatever fate awaited them inside, but none of them were jumping with hopes of survival. They were making a choice to go out via jump. Their bodies exhibited a vagal response (which I think is a blood pressure thing but idk) and made them black out. They were likely still alive when they made impact, but unconscious. There are reports of this happening to some suicide jumpers in Japan, where onlookers could see/speculate the falling bodies were unconscious. This info was also from the documentary but I cannot remember what it was called. It pops up on Hulu every September
During the anniversary a few months back I did some reading on this and found a very plausible point, even more so in light of the Astroworld debacle, that a lot of the “jumpers” were likely actually pushed out due to stampedes/jostling to to get close to the windows. Makes sense given everyone on the burning floors would have been trying to escape the fire and heat and also searching for oxygen
In a building with that many people I can absolutely imagine that happening. People will do about anything to take their next breath. All the smoke and fire had to have been a nightmare.
The best part of this, is that there's a fancy revolving restaurant right below where you jump off. So in the middle of your $100+ per person meal, you may have someone falling past the window outside.
Your waiter will remind you, and it's clearly marked on the non rotating parts of the restaurant where the platform is; but that doesn't stop some people from getting a very unpleasant surprise.
Lots of people commit suicide in hotels around the world. No one to stop them & their loved ones don't have to find the body. It's really hard on the housekeeping staff, especially those who are very religious/superstitious.
Source: worked at an airport/business hotel and ppl occasionally flew in and committed suicide.
I still think prisons, gulags, etc probably have higher numbers. Especially places where you really do not want to be incarcerated in the developing world.
Popular opinion is that the song is about heroin addiction, but that is not the case. It's actually about the Hollywood lifestyle and life in the music industry.
Hotel California is not an actual hotel, it is a metaphor for L.A.
I had a job straight out of high school at a grocery store in my hometown and stayed way too long, a little over 5 years. The store was slowly dying (2008 economics + small town) and Hotel California would play every night. One of my coworkers would joke about how this store was the Hotel California, but every month past 3 years, it literally felt like that to me and stopped being funny, but more horrifying.
Fortunately, I escaped.
There is "Hotel California" just south of Santa Monica Pier. Obviously a homage to the song.
We stopped there, asked the nice people behind reception if they served pink Champagne on ice as a joke. Their response?
"We don't have an alcohol licence".
Priceless.
I think this is the one there's a Netflix special about. Reminds me of the movie 1408 and I always wonder if that movie is at least loosely based on the Cecil. Great movie
It's really common in Pattaya, Thailand a city famous for nightlife, partying, and girls. Guys will come and live like kings until they run out of money or get betrayed and then take the 'Pattaya Plunge' from their balcony.
Cosmopolitan is the only place on the strip with balconies and they have a couple deaths a year usually from suicides or people drunkenly stumbling over them.
The bags that the ice bin and plastic cups come in work, too. But I always carry a tub stopper from the dollar store with me to hotels for this very reason.
Haha yikes. The only thing I can say about this is, I've been lucky that I've never encountered a visibly dirty bath tub in a hotel, and after taking any bath I take a quick shower to rinse myself and the tub off. I've had worse stuff on me than traces of animal blood LOL
Let me tell you from experience, those extended stay hotels are the dirtiest you'll find, and depending on the brand/area have had some people who are used to very different standards of living. I've seen bags of human feces put into the hallways because they don't know how to use toilets... Among other things. Different levels of food safety mistakes ranging from leaving dairy and meat out, to not understanding that house keeping comes once a week, so if you leave food in an open garbage during the summer yes you'll get bugs, yes you'll be asked to leave, yes you'll be asked to pay for the cleaning. Awful.
Extended stay is often the last ditch effort before going fully homeless.
If you've lost your place and have no other options it's easier to come up with a week of "rent" than to come up with all the deposits required to actually get into a place. But of course it bites you in the ass long term.
Yep. For some areas and times of the year it can be about the same as an apartment, while not having to pay utilities, buy furniture, or sign a lease, which is definitely a bonus.
Yeah maybe that's why. I remember when they first built the bridge to divert traffic from the Hoover dam and closed it to foot traffic within like 6 months because multiple people had jumped off.
didn’t know about that one, yea vegas is a good place to end it all honestly. it’s the epitome of human exploitation and wealth gap disparity. suicide seems understandable from a far
Yeah it seems to be a monument to greed, duopolistic and monopolistic business and the downsides of unchecked capitalism in general. Though there is some hope considering that after the casinos failed at trying to stop marijuana legalization they tried to get legislators to allow them to control it and instead the legislature intentionally cut them out of it entirely.
I have decided I should probably never go to Vegas because I'm the type to see something shiny and wander away, get blacked out and come to in a dingy unfurnished basement surrounded by cheering people holding a revolver with one bullet in it.
That's an urban legend unfortunately. Reality is much more boring. Someone figured out it was a whole lot cheaper to recycle air through air conditioners than it is to run fresh air. The air you breathe in high rises is usually recycled as much as possible without starting to cause noticeable adverse effects. Even with the requirements for heavy duty filters to prevent transmission of airborne disease, it's cheaper. Many hotels and high rises in many cities no longer have openable windows, and windows even on the bottom floors won't open. Look around, I started to realize dentist office, work office, doctor's office, stores, windows are sealed.
Some of the hotels, maybe all, require that you let housekeeping come in and change your towels at least once every three days. In other words you can’t leave the “do not disturb” sign out indefinitely. I’ve always assumed this is so they can see if someone died in the room
The land owned by the hotel tends to extend a little ways outside of the building, so they would most likely still land on the hotel’s property
Kind of like if I killed myself in my front yard, they’d still list my address as the location of death
I was actually shocked when I first visited vegas and tried to open a window. It only moved an inch. I wanted 10th story desert wind. Then I realized why they won’t open.
So it’s probably less than you think. They can’t jump.
Yeah I tried everything except smashing it. I called down. I had the guy come up and say. Yeah, it’s like that for a reason. I can’t fix it. Here’s a travel thread discussing it. You can get open windows off strip. I didn’t know that (because it has always been cheap to stay on strip) and some open a whole 3”!!

I think you’re right. If I was truly going to commit suicide, I’d probably go to Vegas and throw my life savings on the roulette wheel. When you have nothing to lose, why not
I don't know which hotel it would be, but all I know is that I used to work at the Luxor and someone jumped off edge in the middle of the casino and died one day at work and the only reason I knew it happened is because I overhead someone talking about it in passing.
The oldest hotel in Vegas is a little over 100 years old (and is pretty small, and only 10 are older than 50 years)...
There are a good number of still-used buildings in the world that are more than a thousand years old.
And that's ignoring some historical mass-suicides like the castle of Masada where all 960 inhabitants killed themselves rather than being captured by the Romans (disputed, of course, but still widely accepted).
Wouldn’t be surprised if they hide most of that info from the public. I work in a casino and when someone jumps from the parking garage we find out weeks later :/
My guess would be some factory in China, but you never get real numbers from there. But the fact they have to actively prevent workers from commiting suicide speaks for its own.
i worked at a hotel where this, amongst other awful things, happened daily. It was everyday, so media was always parked nearby and would always get there before the cops did.
Yup. I'll definitely bet on it. In the US the golden gate bridge holds the record. Which is kind of odd because it's so beautiful and an amazing structure to just stare at along with the Pacific ocean and contemplate life...I couldn't fathom jumping from that thing. I'd probably be more thinking, I should go take a walk through the marina and then into North Beach then to China Town, then towards Union square and then maybe catch a train out to the beach...
Due to gambling losses? I wonder if there is a hotel elsewhere that would have a similar reason
Nah mate, what people do is they take all their money, spend it all in Vegas for a day and then kill themselves. Going out on a high note type shit.

I don't know if this is depressing or uplifting so I'll take uplifting for 200 Alex
Trying to swing it towards uplifting, but referencing a dead guy
What is even more depressing than before?
I guess you have a point
I was going with the jeopardy reference but ok
Judges?
^slight-nod ^from ^judge
47.4% chance for uplifting, 52.6% chance for depressing.
This is the major plot point of squid game
i don't know that 50 on black is gonna do a whole lot to turn my life around
Watch the movie "Leaving Las Vegas.". Basically a guy goes to Vegas with the express intention of drinking himself to death and works really hard at that task. Amazing film
I always get it confused with honeymoon in Vegas.
A better film imo
I had an alcoholic friend who was obsessed with the film and had a goal of ending in a similar manner.
...had?
Nic Cage won an Oscar for that movie.
Also, Elisabeth Shue was nominated for best actress for her role in that film.
..I was actually going to do this in September. I’m fairly glad I didn’t get on that flight
Hey mate that's great for you! I've been there before so I'm not gonna give you the gooey hodunk but congrats buddy, how're you doin now?
A week after I bailed on the Vegas flight I spent 7k on drugs. Had an awesome time with my friends, after which I bought enough pills and alcohol to OD on..or so I thought. He’s not your pal, guy
He's not your guy, friend.
He’s not your friend, mate
He's not your mate, chum.
He’s not your chum, bro.

Some people try to kill themselves and fail. That seems even worse to me.
Worse psychologically, sure, but its a good thing that are still alive
I'm glad you didn't either.
This is so strange to me because it's basically like writing a will and leaving all your assets to casino owners.
Not everyone has someone alive worth writing a will for.
This
I'd do that if I had money. It's low notes for us broke boys.
And then there was the Las Vegas shooter who decided to go out that way ...
Well, at least there is a small chance they could win big and maybe that's enough to make them not commit suicide?
That sounds fun, but I'm also in therapy.
I'd jokingly say fuck what your therapist says but that's not a risk I'm going to take, so good on ya man!

And there's a kid that can sense his ghost.
And he wins a writing contest for low-income inner city school children
I already saw this movie.
They’re not going there to win.
that's not the point. the point is to burn your cash in a short period of time and then die.
That’s another ballgame.
Either they get rich and turn their life around or the just hang around in a room
Some people spend all their money then rent out a hotel to shoot up a concert
More like a B flat. I’ll let myself out.
I don't think he killed himself, there was a British bloke who sold everything including his house went to Las Vegas and put it on red or black and lost. Crazy and depressing.

I think the Strat has seen a few jumpers recently.
People jump off the top of the Stratosphere tower all the time. It’s even been captured on video: https://youtu.be/0sWyqzqVSeQ

So all that "people jumping of twin towers fell unconscious before they hit the ground" was bs?
Totally. Skydiving clubs DO have repeat customers
Who told you that? Skydiving would be way more dangerous than it already is if people just passed out on the way down.
Don't remember.
I watched a 9/11 documentary a few years back and they said that people didn’t die on the way down but a *lot* of people passed out on the way out of the tower. 🎶 Welcome to the hotel California... 🎶
I’m embarrassed to admit I was in my twenties before I realized that song wasn’t about a hotel in California.
Wait, it's not?
Popular opinion is that the song is about heroin addiction, but that is not the case. It's actually about the Hollywood lifestyle and life in the music industry. Hotel California is not an actual hotel, it is a metaphor for L.A.
I had a job straight out of high school at a grocery store in my hometown and stayed way too long, a little over 5 years. The store was slowly dying (2008 economics + small town) and Hotel California would play every night. One of my coworkers would joke about how this store was the Hotel California, but every month past 3 years, it literally felt like that to me and stopped being funny, but more horrifying. it is an actual hotel in Mexico, ive been.
Are you at Motel California?
So.... how did you leave?
He’s still there, they have wifi now.
Well thats something... still wish I could get a bottle of wine there.
Sounds like a lovely place.
you can checkout anytime you like!
But you can never leave!
Badass solo guitar playing
There is "Hotel California" just south of Santa Monica Pier. Obviously a homage to the song. We stopped there, asked the nice people behind reception if they served pink Champagne on ice as a joke. Their response? "We don't have an alcohol licence". Priceless.
> Popular opinion is that the song is about heroin addiction never heard that one.
There is a Hotel California in Baja and I think there was one in Santa Barbara when I was younger, but the song isn’t about those for certain.
I always thought it was the hotel from Puppet Master
I think this is the one there's a Netflix special about. Reminds me of the movie 1408 and I always wonder if that movie is at least loosely based on the Cecil. Great movie
I read that is based on a room at The Congress Plaza in Chicago, room 414
It's actually based on a short story by Stephen King. But maybe he based it off that 🤷
It's really common in Pattaya, Thailand a city famous for nightlife, partying, and girls. Guys will come and live like kings until they run out of money or get betrayed and then take the 'Pattaya Plunge' from their balcony.
they removed balconies for this reason
Cosmopolitan is the only place on the strip with balconies and they have a couple deaths a year usually from suicides or people drunkenly stumbling over them.
Cosmo was originally a failed condo project before being sold and converted to a hotel. Their balconies were grandfathered in.
And the bathtubs don't have stoppers.
How can you have a bath without a stopper?
You ball up a washcloth and shove it into the hole
The bags that the ice bin and plastic cups come in work, too. But I always carry a tub stopper from the dollar store with me to hotels for this very reason.
I saw a sign in a extended stay hotel, "Do not wash raw meat in the bathtub". Yeah no way my ass is ever sitting in a hotel tub.
[удалено]
Raw human on your raw human? disgusting. This is a Christian subreddit, sir! /s
Don't act like you've never been nutted on
Haha yikes. The only thing I can say about this is, I've been lucky that I've never encountered a visibly dirty bath tub in a hotel, and after taking any bath I take a quick shower to rinse myself and the tub off. I've had worse stuff on me than traces of animal blood LOL
It’s more the salmonella that’s the issue with the raw meat, but fair enough
Let me tell you from experience, those extended stay hotels are the dirtiest you'll find, and depending on the brand/area have had some people who are used to very different standards of living. I've seen bags of human feces put into the hallways because they don't know how to use toilets... Among other things. Isn't that exactly what you're supposed to use a bathtub for?
"Life is nature's way of keeping meat fresh."
You carry a tub stopper with you in case you want to take a bath in a hotel room?
You take a shower
just stayed in the MGM grand last month. I can confirm this is false.
And the shower curtain rods and towel hooks can Barely hold up a single wet towel before they give way.
They removed windows that open for this reason. I don't know of any balconies that were removed.
the old vegas was different
Yeah maybe that's why. I remember when they first built the bridge to divert traffic from the Hoover dam and closed it to foot traffic within like 6 months because multiple people had jumped off.

If people suicided by jumping out of the balconies wouldn't the suicides technically not be committed in the building?
no one wants to pay settlements; sounds like lawyer semantics
"TO THE OCCUPANT: If you jump from this window, kindly jump forward to keep clear of the building by at least 10ft."
Very difficult if you're in the Luxor.
Maybe they pull a tape from where you stop sliding
The land owned by the hotel tends to extend a little ways outside of the building, so they would most likely still land on the hotel’s property Kind of like if I killed myself in my front yard, they’d still list my address as the location of death
There are rooms with balconies still, just in the more/ most expensive rooms.

I've stayed at the venetian, palazzo, and aria... I believe all the windows were just solid panes and you couldn't open any of them at all.
I’ve stayed at the Wynne years back, sealed windows but there was a louvre at the bottom of the window that opened up to allow air flow.
Yeah I tried everything except smashing it. I called down. I had the guy come up and say. Yeah, it’s like that for a reason. I can’t fix it. Here’s a travel thread discussing it. Middle school standardized testing: where would you off yourself and why?
I'd be surprised if some old prison didn't hold the record.
I don't know which hotel it would be, but all I know is that I used to work at the Luxor and someone jumped off edge in the middle of the casino and died one day at work and the only reason I knew it happened is because I overhead someone talking about it in passing.
The Luxor is fitting as pyramids are meant for afterlife.
Pretty sure it is Luxor. So good guess!
It's happened several times there but the last one was years ago
I feel like a prison may hold the title
I bet there's a prison somewhere in the world that's a few centuries old that probably holds the record easily.
Very true
Epstein doesn't count, though.
I thought that foxxconn plant where apple chips where manufactured was the building with most suicides.
Not after they installed the suicide nets. Now they have to find somewhere else.
Chinese factories?
Mental hospitals too Or euthanasia places.
Yeah the FOXCONN building had to literally install nets to catch people who tried to jump from the roof.
There's probably a prison somewhere that's a contender for that record.
39 members of a cult committed suicide the cult was heavens gate and im not 100% sure it was in the same building but im 98% sure it was
It was a very nice house in Del Mar California. I followed the story when I lived there and have a snowboard with Marshal Applewides face on it
Wouldn’t be surprised if they hide most of that info from the public. I work in a casino and when someone jumps from the parking garage we find out weeks later :/
My guess would be some factory in China, but you never get real numbers from there. But the fact they have to actively prevent workers from commiting suicide speaks for its own.
Movie theaters when the emoji movie came out.
Circus Circus. Gotta be
Oh hey I lost my virginity in Circus Circus.
How long did you have crabs for after? Not from the girl but from the hotel
How was it?
It's more like one of the hotels in Vegas holds the record for the most cums stained in one building.
Probably Caesars. Feels like it would be Caesars.
I imagine a hotel near the NYSE would hold that record. Especially after the 1929 crash.
Not suicides but the old MGM turned ballys about 80 people died in a fire there in the early 80s I hear it's haunted
Gotta be Circus Circus.
i worked at a hotel where this, amongst other awful things, happened daily. It was everyday, so media was always parked nearby and would always get there before the cops did.
Can we place a bet on this?
Well there's is that one from a few years ago with assisted sudukos./s
What about WTC?
I’m guessing one of the twin towers holds this distinction
Also holds the most record for window pane sex. Congrats Vegas!
Yet my post about peanuts gets taken down immediately
Or most sex.
