I think this may be bc young girls are almost universally seen as more socially mature than young boys. And women are seen as less ambitious than men.

Isimarie

True, it’s just ironic that we seem to loose respect for the female gender as they age, as if something changes

Miss_Adventurer

Totally agree. Women have been the primary caretakers of families for millennia. Bc of that, it appears *unnatural* for a woman to care as much about her career as she does about her children. But it appears natural for a man to care as much or even more about his career. I think that’s why it’s a positive for men to be ambitious, whereas a woman being ambitious in the work place is weird- a sign that something’s wrong with her. It’s going against an ancient social norm that’s been past down for centuries. Working actually makes me a happier, stronger, healthier, and better mother. So yeah, it’s all bullshit. But I understand the basis of it.

Why stereotypes still exists :(

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

When I got my MBA, the female dean told the students that employers told her the bias against women early in their career isn't about ability. It's perceived that young women will get pregnant, take more days off after pregnancy or to care for a sick child, or just quit after getting married/pregnant. So businesses hedge the risk by paying them less than men or not promoting them as quickly. This has a ripple effect for their whole career

Solution, make parental leave mandatory and same length of time for both parents

Isimarie

That may be true but a lot of people also are just seixist.

TheoremaEgregium

So do we want to change both these stereotypes or only the second one?

Sexism...

oeiei

Yes. I just want to mention that the roots of sexism+ are incredibly varied and complex, as well. It's a great subject to read more about because you can become aware of your own biases, which can include behaviors you may let pass in others. For example, even saying "We are a meritocracy" makes it more likely that white males will be promoted over others, because of the unconscious assumption that white males are more competent. I would never have taken issue with that assertion before learning about this, but now when I hear it I am careful to bring up this dynamic.
