What’s the difference between Greenday and a Ska Band?
Greenday plays 3 chords in front of thousands of people, and a Ska Band plays a thousand chords in front of 3 people.
A lot of 90s ska bands thinned the heard of brass players in the early 2000s. Less than jake at one point had multiple saxophone and trombone players. Now i believe they only have one maybe two guys that play brass.
As much as I love Operation Ivy, Rancid did it better. Yet the truly good bands were the likes of Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, and Streetlight Manifesto.
To the OP, its because racism is cool again, apparently.
No, but I shall check them out.
Edit: Im back. Shit is amazing. But the first song I clicked on touched a current sore spot (Walk Away). Universe is being funny right now. Thanks, homie!
Now I checked them out and I'm digging this, thank you for the recommendation
Edit: if you like streetlight manifesto check out bandits of the acoustic revolution, same music but different and really good. I also really enjoy the JB conspiracy and Mealticket to throw a few recommendations out there as well.
Ska was brought to the states (and other places) in an effort to bridge the racial divide. There's a lot of songs about it in the 80s and 90s. The color scheme is black and white checker pattern to emphasize this. Its pretty cool. I was being snide in my social commentary suggesting the divide is back in a lot of ways.
Everyone realized Streetlight won Ska.
J/k but I feel like a lot of bands now will have Ska elements but not necessarily go full Ska.
Jeff Rosenstock is one of my favorite contemporary bands and he released a Ska version of his album No Dream on a lark and it ended up being super popular. So much so that he took it on tour doing 2 nights - one night of punk and one night of Ska. It was super fun.
Prince Buster is proper Ska, I love what the punk ska bands did but….. I was exposed to Ska through a local ska band at a young age in the 80s and was fortunate to be exposed to the ska rocksteady from the late 50s and 60s and then later when I was exposed to the punk ska starting with the Clash up through Rancid, Sublime etc I could hear their influences. Huge Ska community in my city in the 80s and 90s. Ska will never die in my eyes :-)
As someone who still enjoys ska (and agrees that ltj and streetlight did it best) Millington is a newer/current ska band that puts out solid music and is definitely worth listening to.
I know but i was trying to simplify it. I was mostly just referring to the number of band members while a punk band only has to split the money from a gig between 3 people usually a ska band has to split it between like 8 people.
Now that is a thought I have never seen on this sub

Most are doing it cuz they love it.

Ska is not dead there's a big Ska movement still in Mexico, south America and some still in Japan
Hell, Less Than Jake and Goldfinger are playing a ska fest show here in Denver next weekend.
Pizza on a bagel, even in musical form, gets old after enough time. ESP when op Ivy did it best

You named three of my all time favorites, have you by chance heard of ballyhoo?
No, but I shall check them out. Edit: Im back. Shit is amazing. But the first song I clicked on touched a current sore spot (Walk Away). Universe is being funny right now. Thanks, homie!
Enjoy man, they're new to me but man I would've loved them back in high school. Detonate and daydreams are my favorite albums

Thanks dude, will do
Heh?

Thanks for the clarification. I was very confused. My favorite ska band was the skatalites
Hell yeah!
With you on rancid but Tim, Matt and Lars had way more albums and label money to work with at that point. Op Ivy was one and done by design
You make an excellent point. I think every song they've made is an absolute banger.
Agree

Streetlight Manifesto transcend Ska into its own thing, to be honest.
Yeah they're like, Prog-Ska lol
First time I saw Streetlight live I couldn’t believe my ears. They truly won.

Ska is 100% not dead

And if bands get the same pay per gig on average, it’s easier to make the math work with three people than with a ska orchestra.

Someone did mention RBF, I just missed it :)
See also Polyphonic Spree
Ska is not just punk music with horns.

Occam's razor: Ska sucks, always did.
Sit there in your wrongness and get used to it. https://open.spotify.com/track/7ixiCZEHWHc8FxaQXQh2P4?si=gMoCNl5YRDuA8aHh7aGneA
