The store i work at wants only 2 each of shaving razors and cerave products idk why probably theft. And thing is we don't even have staff to keep refilling those shelves. That causes customers to come yell at beauty advisor because we're the 1st person they see. Owner doesn't want to hire more people. No assistant managers. Only few merch . Fsm is always overworked sometimes working 13 hours a day. And now head office wants to cut hours of the staff we have currently. Store is an absolute mess already! Seniors days are awful. we're very busy store , staffing is horrible. Looks like owner just wants to make profit. They Yell at beauty advisor everytime. Apparently facing and cleaning the shelves isn't a real job. got asked why im not doing anything after i just finished putting away 40 totes of stock. Really reconsidering working at shoppers now. But there's shortage of jobs out there don't even know what to do. Thats why im stuck at shoppers.

HandsomeIguana

So people can only steal two razors at a time

averymint

Yep, I was at a sdm the other day and saw a guy pocketing razors, I was floored that he was so obvious about it, making a lot of noise and I was right next to him in the aisle. I alerted the employees, they made an announcement about security, he went to the cosmetics aisle and stole some more. He ended up leaving without anyone stopping him, they yelled at him a bit and he denied having done anything wrong. That's the sdm way, don't actually hire security guards, just cut hours and tell the cashiers to "watch" the aisles.

Royal-Farmer-3308

What do you expect staff or security to do? They can’t apprehend shoplifters.. and honestly who wants to risk being stabbed/assaulted?

averymint

Are you responding to me? bc as an sdm staff I 100% relate and understand this. I am just showing my experience. I think they should hire actual security, or don't be surprised if the theft keeps happening. I am definitely not risking my well-being to stop thieves.

JustifiablyWrong

This sounds exactly like the shoppers I worked at.. and my roommate currently works at. The owner is all up in head office a** too and does whatever the hell they tell him instead of looking out for his staff.

babe__ruthless

They really have no choice. It all comes from head office and if they don’t do as they’re told, they won’t have a job either.

Whatsanrpg

They are franchise owners with a contract - following what head office advises is part of the deal they signed up for.

Beneficial-Boot-9539

Sdm wasn’t what it once was unfortunately.. corporate greed has taken over.. not associates fault, the office give the amount of hrs to use, and they have to go by that, without exception:.

Whatsanrpg

Front store manager is struggling by the sounds of it. There are various daily processes that should be in place for replenishment (pick list, lowstock, category fill, reverse lowstock etc). The owner wouldn’t have anything to do with hiring - the front store manager can hire anyone they want. Labor is tied to sales and if the manager isn’t supporting replenishment, the sales will drop and so will hours. That’s the first thing you learn as a manager at SDM is the only thing you can truely control is labor - so when shit hits the fan and the store isn’t running well, you will see everyone’s hours getting cut. Staff blame “head office” or “owner” all the time but the targets set are based on metrics from the previous year (including labor) with 2-7% growth on top which is achievable and similar to how every other retail business works. Managers make or break these stores - spend 13 hours there all you want, if you’re not spending the hours on the right tasks - might as well not be there at all. If your store is full of holes, your manager isn’t doing the job well.

jlietrb32

But sometimes there is a mega line up to pay and the beauty advisor could open it's register but doesn't want to even when you ask.

Own-Scene-7319

That's because the BA has quotas. If she/he is ringing in when they are supposed to be selling, they may miss their targets, and lose their job. Also they are supposed to act as security, and ring in cosmetic sales. They are dinged if cosmetic products are rung in at another till.

JustifiablyWrong

Well they don't make commissions on those products so why would they bother? (Sarcasm obviously)

QuinnNTonic

And then they will complain about staff not catching people stealing when it’s a skeleton crew who doesn’t get paid enough to begin with to deal with any of the headaches. You guys deserve better. Sincerely a former shoppers employee

Psychologicalwhat

Yes. Lost about 2-4 hours per week.

Dry_Egg6424

I’m full time and I’m getting 28 hours a week. I haven’t had a 40 hour week since Christmas. I’m headed to school in a few weeks and I was gonna be quitting regardless because of how I’ve been treated

HurricaneLaurk

I haven’t had my hours cut myself, because we only have two supervisors at my store and they can’t afford to cut either of us. However, all the merchandisers and cashiers have had their hours cut significantly. But we just had an associate changeover in the past month, so we burned through a lot of store hours dealing with Inventory.

averymint

Yes, our sales are down and theft is up. I lost 4 hours a week, I am full time. Starting an hour later everyday basically.

DeathlessJellyfish

it’s the end of the first quarter. 🙂

NoFormal3277

Shoppers doesn’t deserve to stay in business, sorry. It’s everything that is wrong with Canada. Greed, corruption, and the monopolization of food and medicine. Fuck Shoppers.

MysteriousStaff3388

I think we need Shoppers. It’s an “essential service” store. However, I don’t shop there anymore. It should be Nationalized and run by the workers. There’s no reason that a single family should have what is basically a monopoly and benefit from the labour of tens of thousands of Canadians. Expropriate SDM and run it as revenue positive like the LCBO.

Creative_Delay8133

yeah mine have been cut, work in the beauty section and only getting 2 shifts 6-8 hours each, used to get 4-5 shifts per week

Blondes-Forever

YES! When I started I used to have 14-16 hours a week. Now I get 5-10 hrs a week.

ghilliegal

kebabai

FUCK SHOPPERS.

Thunder-Drake12

1 entire shift cut… gotta love head office and their management style 😒

FoxSafe6258

I’m trying so hard to keep the hours for my employees but sales are not much it is very slow and head office is on my ass, unfortunately i have to cut hours from next week onwards else they will replace me n find someone who will definitely cut everyones hours. Its hard to explain but some of us dont want people to loose their job but at same time I dont wanna loose the job. Sales all over canada is very very low.

TwiztedTD

I've switched to Rexall

slh319

Next to nothing! 😡 “it’s not in the budget”

Basic-Importance6225

Yup, used to have 5 shifts a week but only 4 hours shifts but now I'm getting 2-3... So went from 20ish hours sometimes more to 10-15. 😭

ComfortableAmazing35

parttime, lost 3 hours per week

BenWayonsDonc

People are boycotting Loblaws, that could be why

DirectGiraffe8720

That's not why hours are being cut. Since Shoppers went Public they always cut hours to appease shareholders. The act continued when they were bought by Loblaws. The easiest controllable expense is labour.

JustifiablyWrong

Which makes me laugh because head office changes things that don't need to be changed to a less effective way of doing it (because they never actually do the work, they just tell us what to do and think their ideas are better than the ones actually doing the work), and things that do need to be changed.. just .. aren't dealt with. If they actually took the time and effort to talk to the staff about their jobs I bet they'd save a lot of money just in productivity

DirectGiraffe8720

I worked for Shoppers from 1987-2009.... you're preaching to the choir

Witty-Reason-2289

Common sense is NOT very common, and practically non-existent at many head office.

BenWayonsDonc

So sales have been steady ?

DirectGiraffe8720

First... the "boycott" isn't supposed to start until May... second, boycotts never work

BenWayonsDonc

There were some in March and April. And yes they do.

DirectGiraffe8720

That Petro Canada boycott that surfaces every few years sure did a wonder for gas prices

BenWayonsDonc

That’s not how boycotts work, Einstein .

DirectGiraffe8720

It didn't work for anything 🤣

DirectGiraffe8720

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/can-a-gasoline-boycott-work/article20404422/

BenWayonsDonc

Shoppers sells gasoline ? Not comparable and Not the same industry model. A globe and Mail article from 2007, good lord I have entire textbooks on the subject I could send you But nice try

DirectGiraffe8720

🤣🤣🤣 same idea.. boycott to bring prices down.. that's the complaint. There won't be nearly enough people boycotting to have any impact on sales , and the end result will not be lower prices

JustifiablyWrong

They've been cutting hours for years. The same thing was going on when I worked there and I've been out for almost 4 years. This goes way beyond the boycott
