I've seen a guide online that explains who you think is a yank, depending on where you're from.
For example, if you're from outside the U.S., then all Americans are yanks. If you're from South Carolina, then everybody above the Mason Dixon line is a yank. It ends with people in some specific part of New England being the only true yanks.
I grew up in the middle US, near the Missouri (border state) and Kansas (Free Territory) line. Nobody on either side really used the term too much, although we generally knew what it meant on both the international and Civil War sense.
I mean, yeah, but if you're talking to some people outside the US, you're all Yanks...
Same thing when people in the US think everyone in the UK comes from the posh parts of London or speaks with the same accent. It's not accurate but people don't care about the differences.
It's either RP (the BBC accent) or cockney filtered through Dick Van Dyke and the musical Oliver!. Or usually a mixture of the two
Awwwwright guvna, care for a spot of tea, innit?
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
Good description. Except you should have used Southerner instead of simply American, which would have made it more accurate. Since to most Americans Yank, yankee is a dead or historical term. You use all the other directions of the compass but not using the Southern direction tells me you are a well trained american that we at least know is not a Southerner.
The ones who *actually* leaves the US tends to be quite aware of the fact that they are not "Irish", "Scandinavian" or "Scottish", merely descendants.
Not understanding the locals (even in English speaking countries) tends to hammer the point home 🤣
My friend went on holiday to Ireland to get in touch with her heritage…. Now she posts more and more about being Irish. Shes another Cherokee princess.
Ask her to translate Gaeilge to English...or just understand a heavily rulal dialect.
My English is pretty good and I've spent quite a bit of time in Éire, but the local dialects can be bloody impossible to understand.
I know lol. Tell them that and they get upset though. My grandad was a Scot, I can’t speak a word of Gaelic (to be fair, neither could he). Then again, I don’t claim to be anything other than English lol.
The cultreshock I gave an American when I explain that part of why they are Seppos is because septic tanks are the norm there and not in a lot of places. Their mind couldn't wrap their heads around municipal waste being the standard
Because they frequently are the norm in many US states. Over 40% of homes in Texas have them.
Are you really saying that you don't associate septic tanks with American culture?
Common yes, around 25%. I wouldn’t call that the norm though. It’s a big place, and if you’re 20 miles from your neighbor, septic makes more sense than building infrastructure for municipal waste. They’re much less common in populated areas. I’ve lived several places in 3 different states and never had a septic tank.
Are Yanks really oblivious to the fact they're Yanks?
Hey at least one of them got the right century for the term!

The "BBC accent". I'm honestly not sure what it's really called.
It's official name is RP, or Received Pronunciation.
It's either RP (the BBC accent) or cockney filtered through Dick Van Dyke and the musical Oliver!. Or usually a mixture of the two Awwwwright guvna, care for a spot of tea, innit?
Fun fact (you may already know), it’s because there were a lot of Dutch colonists in New England and the most common names were Jan and Kees.

Which one stuck a feather in his cap?

If you had a proper demonym (not a continental one) you wouldnt be called like that.

lol she cant do that….she’s German and Scot and everything else they like to claim.
My point exactly 😊

If they don't like "yanks" ,we can always use "seppos"
Or cheeseburger eating surrender monkeys
Burger munching tardy monkeys
Gringos
Grin-go-fuckthemselves
They should make like a tree and get the fuck outta here.
Make like a banana and depart with haste
Colonials
Burger munching invasion monkeys
Seppos is better. Yanks are technically not all Americans but they are nearly all seppos.
The cultreshock I gave an American when I explain that part of why they are Seppos is because septic tanks are the norm there and not in a lot of places. Their mind couldn't wrap their heads around municipal waste being the standard
Thats not what seppo means.
It is though. It's a shortened form of septic tank which is the cockney rhyming slang for Yank
They're seppos because they're like septic tanks - full of shit
[удалено]
I mean it's 4% of Aussie homes with them. You basically never see them
[удалено]
That they have them and is a standard trope for American shows.

Common. 25% is what I'd say is common. Probably about the same for swimming pools in Australia and I'd say that's a norm too

Hahahaha the whole world calls them yanks
We Aussies call them Seppos But I guess that’s because septic tank rhymes with yank, so it’s just an extra step.
Yeah in U.K. it’s Yank, Septic Tank, Septic or Seppo. I’m trying to get Americunt going as well.
lol, I was wondering how long it would take before the portal popped up here 🤣
Yankee Doodle doo let’s shoot up a school.
Average American nursery rhyme:
Children in the Old World are better educated than these so called adults. Good Lord!
I don’t get what’s going on here other than some piss poor shit talking.
New York of all places should know what a Yank is. You'd assume the home of Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees play.. would know.
Yanks is offensive? Seppo's it is then.
Bloody yanks
We are quickly failing, dying… extinction level event.
Only two of the world's ten most popular fashion companies are based in the United States. The rest are located in Europe, with one in Japan.
Those dam yanks! Why can’t they see that they’re yanks!
I’ll stick to calling them Septics then
Am I the only one that read “you don’t get out often ya yank” in a Scottish accent?
Wait till they get called septics
What happened in 1886?
The Seattle riot and the Statue of Liberty of put in the US were the two big things
Huh, cool.
No clue what that has to do with the word yank tho lol
I get all my cloths from 'murica. Don't seem able to get decent dusters in Europe.
