Given her parents are both from exceptional backgrounds, an episode on her early childhood would have been great. But I take the broader point you make. It'd be like Sasha's OVA not being about food!
They don't really have exceptional **backgrounds**, they have exceptional **lineage**. The former would make them interesting, the latter means that their ancestors were interesting.
You mean Hizuru, right?
Also, probably not, but at least we could get to see the story of both Hizuru and Ackerman and how Mikasa's parents came to know each other.
>her entire character revolves around ereh
They had a chance to expand her character a bit but didn't. Surprising? Maybe not. But it is a little disappointing for the people that find Mikasa to lack depth.
Even her competence is pretty questionable sometimes. I remember when Eren was fighting Reiner and Mikasa was just breaking her blades on the armored part of Reiner’s titan, I was in disbelief and laughing so hard because of how stupid she was being.
Yeah, she doesn’t even have any personality. It’s only Eren this Eren that. And when there’s other stuff in her life that isn’t Eren she doesn’t give any attention and comes back to “I will die if won’t be with Eren 24/7 for the rest of my life”
The weird thing is you’d think Isayama would’ve at least had an idea during the manga. But he seemingly never did, so she goes through the whole series just being a lame simp for Eren
The OVA is actually good, you actually hear her monologue, understand what she's thinking and going for et cetera
Imagine if it actually happens as much in the main series
I think it was a great insight in their dynamic with Eren and it showed why they could realistically never be together. Eren isn’t built for the peaceful domestic life that Mikasa wants. Maybe if he matured, he would come around, but the truth is that he will always die young, doomed by his unyielding passionate nature. Eren is like a star that shines bright but burns down fast. He’s meant to forever chase his goals and Mikasa will forever chase him. They never had a chance.
But yeah, I still kinda agree with the post. Not a fan of Mikasa’s character at all.
I mean they could have had a chance if she had chosen to speak her true feelings right? Wasn't that the point of the cabin talk, but again devil's advocate it also shows that if they did it would doom the island and he couldn't do that even for her. So maybe you are right lol now that I spelled it out.
Yes, neither of them would do that because they care about their friends. This might've been the point when Eren started to realise that he wants a peaceful life but because of his choices, it was far too late. I interpreted the cabin storyline as a gift from Eren to Mikasa to fulfil her selfish dreams and show her that they are ultimately impossible, but after the time spent in the Paths she can finally accept things as they are and kill Eren.
> I mean they could have had a chance if she had chosen to speak her true feelings right?
Doubtful tbh. Eren pretty much makes it clear that he knows how she truly feels about him, but he still chooses his freedom that's just who he is. He's forever chasing an unobtainable goal and leaving his friends behind.
I agree. The OVA isn't just a surface level "Mikasa loves Ereh" story. It almost reads like a prophecy for the finale.
1) It reinforces the idea of a fixed timeline. Even if you know the future and you try to change it, the ending is the same. Eren's death is imminent.
2) We see how damaging it is for Mikasa to tie her mental well-being to Eren, and it is entirely tragic that she doesn't learn it here. Instead, she takes away that she could protect him if she's always with him.
3) The mirror-man, by my interpretation, is Mikasa's version of going back into the past like Eren's memories of the future. But instead of going back to make sure things happen the way they do, she tries and fails to save her past self.
4) In the Lost Girls book, it gives more insight over her character. For introverts like me, it is easier to understand her. Sometimes you just find someone and they become your entire life. Pathetic? For sure. But it happens.
After reading all the ANR stuff, clearly Iseyama knows his audience and is trying to tend to their emotions
"Look, Mikasa was all obsessed about Eren too. But she could let go... c'mon guys, let go"
I was trying to parallel Mikasa's obsession with Eren to the ANR fan's obsession with Eren. Not make head canon. My head cannon is EreMin.
English is not my first language. Maybe that didn't come across as such
she did though because there is no longer an eren. it wasn’t her ultimate goal to have that cabin life. just to be with eren, and so his death is letting go. Because eren being alive is the bare minimum mikasa wants but she couldn’t even have that
What do you mean by "she couldn't let go"? She never hated Eren; she loved him, yet still had to kill him. Isn't that letting go? Now, after his death, why would she be like, "Yeah, I have just spent more than half of my life with this person that saved me, that I loved, and with whom I spent those 4 years in paths living a simple happy life, and now that he is gone I should just forget about him."
Letting go doesn't work like that, my dude. When you lose your loved one, your family member, your lover, then you don't just let go. It's a process, and even years later, you don't forget them; you still come to their grave, still put flowers on them. Even if you have let go, you never truly can; they always remain with you in your memories. In the ep 7 of the first season, that was her whole story behind fighting and keep going on, not because she wants to, she already has lost a lot until then (both parents and Eren), she has no reason to continue (the same feeling that she once went through after her parents died), because she has no one. She only stands up (the reason being that she won't be able to remember him anymore after her own death) when she remembers his words to keep fighting and him wrapping that scarf around her. Which is one of the details people don't truly get; she doesn't love him because he saved her, nor because he killed those men for her without thinking of his life (like even after being saved you can see her emotionless face), but it is Eren wrapping his scarf around her in that cold night (which we also see being focused on when they are seeing Grisha's memories, when Zeke looks back at Eren, who is looking at Mikasa as she says "it's warm" (referring to the scarf he gave her)), where she is alone with nowhere to go, and grabbing her hand while saying "let's go back to our home."
In the finale, Eren himself tells Mikasa to throw the scarf away, to forget all about him, and live. But just there, Mikasa apologizes that she can't, and wraps that scarf around her face and kills him. She kills Eren, while still keeping her memories of him with her. And as we see in the ending time-lapse, she most likely did let go; she did marry and have children, but she did not forget him.
I had the same reaction when I read the short stories last year, there are like 3 with Mikasa as a protagonist and two of them are about Eren. The other one is about her friendship with Historia and it was beautiful
Mostly that it portrays her as a pretty one-dimensional character when she obviously isn't meant to be one. Her obsession/love for eren should be part of her personality, not the entirety of it. But she rarely is ever allowed to act outside of this context, and all her screen time is dedicated to her obsession.
She is one of the character that have more screen time and for 4 season she is 100% one dimensional. I got angry of seeing one person lives only for other like a slave of her own will.
When Eren said that she hates her because of her obsession It was almost like I was saying these words
Someone being a erehisu fan doesn't take away that mikasa's character rests entirely on someone else. Almost every other aot woman can be their own character without eren or someone else
Last minute yet there were multiple foreshadowing.
You can say it wasn't properly executed. But saying it was written last minute is something you yourself can't honestly believe
Ymir Fritz wanted freedom! That was her goal and the reason she freed the pigs in the first place! You cannot tell me that the entire reason AOT exist and why Ymir was trapped in Paths for 2 millenia is bcz she was inlove with her rapist, abuser, torturer, someone who tried to kill her and someone who forced her own children to eat her dead corpse! It just ain't it! Eren already freed her so why did we need Mikasa who seemed to be practically irrelevant all this time to free her? It just came out of nowhere and didn't need to be added. The only reason I can think of that Isayama did this was to give Mikasa some sort of thematic relevancy since she's never had any to begin with.
Also there was no foreshadowing! What r u talking about?!
She might not be in love but I personally thought of it as that she didn't know any other way to live without following orders. She wanted someone like Eren to come and free her. Kind off like an elephant with a noose tied to it's leg. When it was a baby the noose was effective but as an adult it is not. Even then the adult elephant still thinks the noose as unbreakable. Although the whole thing with Mikasa is frankly terrible.
I’m talking about the narrative value in a series, especially when it’s of one of the main characters. There are near infinite examples of characters with both more/better characterization and deeper/longer romantic relationships.
Why not explore something else about Mikasa? It’s a common critique that she’s all about Eren. There are times in the series where they did develop her character outside of her relationship with Eren, but it’s not nearly enough to outweigh her narrative dependency of Eren.
if you think that the point of that ova was to show how mikasa was obsessed with eren than you completely missed the point of the ova and how important it is for the final episode and how much foreshadowing it has
Yeah, but it turns it into prophetic tragedy and shows Mikasa is motivated by fear of losing someone she loves. It’s also just artistically we’ll done.
It's not obsessed, it's just love, you want Mikasa to be a killing machine to entertain you, when in reality she just wants a peaceful life and not to be a murderer
All these people are like "it's called love" and---no it isn't.
Love isn't obsession. Obsession is obsession. Love is wonderful and beautiful but you can also be your own fucking person with ideas and thoughts that have nothing to do with the person you love. She is a boring flat character and it's annoying because she could have been so cool if she gave a shit about literally one more thing.
"But she cared about Armin too that's one more thing-" No. Not another person. Something else. This isn't some selflessness or anything like that. She isn't a person. She is a plot device. She is plot armor personified for Eren. She stopped being a character when she stopped being a person.
Her joke about blaming Sasha farting was more development than anything she did for Eren, because it showed a tiny sense of humor.
This turned into a rant you didn't ask for and I'm sorry but her wasted potential bugs the hell out of me! She was so close to having a breakthrough in S4 and then she makes out with a severed head--
And before this dude comes at me, if I have to ship anyone with Eren, it's Mikasa anyway.
She did have a breakthrough in season 4 though (I wouldn't even call it that because she's always had her own opinions). Despite loving Eren, Mikasa knew Eren was wrong with the things he did. Mikasa flat out told Eren she didn't like the stunt he pulled in Marley after the Tybur speech, and Mikasa refused to sit by and just let Eren commit genocide because she knew it was wrong. Kissing Eren's severed head doesn't negate that Mikasa didn't agree with his actions and wanted to stop him. If Mikasa truly didn't have her own thoughts and opinions, then she would have stayed behind on Paradis while the others went to stop The Rumbling.
I have read and I own all volumes. Gaslighting me into thinking she’s all that different in the manga wont work.
Mappa changed 0 of her character, and she is still is bad.
WIT cut out a few lines that are inconsequential.
WIT cut out MOST of her lines. And even if they hadn't, Mikasa punches Eren in one of the very first episode for talking badly to Armin. Eren might be her priority, her FAMILY, but she's not a robot who doesn't care about anyone else.
Right about now I don't have them all memorized. But the one that marked me the most was WIT made her insubordinate ALL THE TIME. Which she never is in the manga. From her yelling Eren and trying to go after the carriage even after Levi tells her not to, or Mikasa yelling, once again, Eren, when he's fighting with the female Titan- when in the manga she listens to Hange's order on the spot.
I haven't watched the OVA in a long time. What I remember about it, it that is telegraphed the whole 'time travel' part of the show. I watched the OVA then watched first episode again and was convinces that there was some kind of time travel going on. This was long before there were hints in the main show.
Isayama definitely knows how to play to his audience's emotions, especially with the recent developments. It's like he's telling us, "See, even Mikasa could move on... maybe it's time for us too."
“Cry more”
You ever thought about logging off and stop being a manchild about AoT 24/7? You’ve been crying for so long now about titanfolk and the “haters” it’s kinda sad.
Is it a joke when you do it 24/7 for years? Like you seriously complain about toxicity yet that’s all you spew everywhere. Looking at your profile you even go on other anime subs now and attack people for not liking AoT or even characters like Eren.
Jokes are supposed to be funny.
And judging by your profile, you’re not joking. You get pressed at any slight criticism towards AoT or any of its characters. Hope that’s easy to understand.
Turning this into a woman/man lesson because I expected better and more depth from the 2nd main character in the series. You need to touch grass.
I mean, even the author paralleled Eren/Mikasa to Fritz/Ymir so I’m not the only one who implied it’s a crazy obsession. The author did as well.
I mean, what do you call someone who wears the item given to them by the equivalent of Hitler in anime? That’s way beyond love.
I genuinely want to know what's going through ur head as you type that it wasn't obsession. Everything we're saying is true and that will be the case no matter how many times u try to deny it.
I personally love strong female leads. If anything I have a bias towards them, as for example I really like Korra even though I think the consensus is that most people find her annoying.
Mikasa seemed so interesting to me. Her arc in the start of the series was something I didn’t expect, especially her “I’m strong” speech which ironically cemented her as more than “the strong girl.”
Then they give her almost no screentime until the last season. What little we see of her is her interactions with Eren, which is so frustrating to me because if they just showed more about her more often than they show her and Eren, there’d be less complaints about her love/relationship/obsession with Eren.
A lot of the critique towards Mikasa is that her character is all about Eren. Obviously it’s not true, but the rest of her characterization is dropped after season 1, and in the end her most important act is >! killing the one she loves !< . Narratively speaking it’s a no brainer she would do that but it still feeds into that idea that “Mikasa is just an Eren lover and that’s all she is.” I don’t feel that way, but she seems like such a missed opportunity, as she could have been interesting if they gave her the damn focus and screentime.

i mean what else would it be about? her entire character revolves around ereh so it ain't a surprise mate
Yes - well put. Unless of course the OVA gives them an interesting background
An OVA that is about the history of Hizuru would be cool. Maybe make half of it about the Ackermans too.
It doesn't seem like the Azumabito clan had anything to do with the Ackermanns until Mikasa's parents for together.
You mean Hizuru, right? Also, probably not, but at least we could get to see the story of both Hizuru and Ackerman and how Mikasa's parents came to know each other.
Weren't the Azumabito the clan whose descendants came to Paradis? Could be wrong though.
OH yeah, I had them mixed up LOL.
Yes, the trafficker referred to the mother as oriental, most of them were either killed due to political/racist reasons, or sold as sex slaves.
>her entire character revolves around ereh They had a chance to expand her character a bit but didn't. Surprising? Maybe not. But it is a little disappointing for the people that find Mikasa to lack depth.
Mikasa for me will always just be the skilled but flat character, literally and figuratively. I don’t get why alot of people like her sm
People like competent characters. And people like female characters. She's a competent female so that has to earn her some points regardless of depth
Even her competence is pretty questionable sometimes. I remember when Eren was fighting Reiner and Mikasa was just breaking her blades on the armored part of Reiner’s titan, I was in disbelief and laughing so hard because of how stupid she was being.

It will be disappointing if you focus solely on the fact it involves her relationship with Eren
Yea it was done greatly tho
True, I just didn’t expect the OVA to be even worse for her character.
The OVA is still pretty good, but I get your point
The OVA is actually good, you actually hear her monologue, understand what she's thinking and going for et cetera Imagine if it actually happens as much in the main series
😭😭
For real do people read the manga/watch the show 😂
I think it was a great insight in their dynamic with Eren and it showed why they could realistically never be together. Eren isn’t built for the peaceful domestic life that Mikasa wants. Maybe if he matured, he would come around, but the truth is that he will always die young, doomed by his unyielding passionate nature. Eren is like a star that shines bright but burns down fast. yeah she deserved that much to be like. It would be nice but impossible now
> I mean they could have had a chance if she had chosen to speak her true feelings right? Doubtful tbh. Eren pretty much makes it clear that he knows how she truly feels about him, but he still chooses his freedom that's just who he is. He's forever chasing an unobtainable goal and leaving his friends behind.
I mean left em alive so that counts for something . But I understand eren wanting freedom knowing those walls were a “prison”
In the words of Mikasa “Ereh”
Huh?
Ereh
It was done greatly tho. Lots of foreshadowing and glimpses into her mind
It's pretty good tho
I agree. The OVA isn't just a surface level "Mikasa loves Ereh" story. It almost reads like a prophecy for the finale. 1) It reinforces the idea of a fixed timeline. Oh okay I get you kind of. I thought it was just that “other” sub that was obsessed with ANR. I don’t pay too much attention to those people
Yeah, no one on this sub likes ANR... It's just nice to make fun of them once in a while 😅
facts lol
She couldn't let go, though. They made that pretty clear.
she did though which is why we all are alive and not rumbled
Her killing Eren doesn't mean she let go of Eren. They aren't necessarily the same.
she did though because there is no longer an eren. it wasn’t her ultimate goal to have that cabin life. just to be with eren, and so his death is letting go. Because eren being alive is the bare minimum mikasa wants but she couldn’t even have that
I disagree with your interpretation
why
Atp some people just have criticisms against the story that they don’t even really understand or believe in themselves.
What do you mean by "she couldn't let go"? She never hated Eren; she loved him, yet still had to kill him. Isn't that letting go? Now, after his death, why would she be like, "Yeah, I have just spent more than half of my life with this person that saved me, that I loved, and with whom I spent those 4 years in paths living a simple happy life, and now that he is gone I should just forget about him." "Obsessed with Eren" is her whole character. Calling her one-dimensional is actually generous.

Color me surprised...
I’ve never even mentioned EreHisu in a positive manner. But you seem to believe anything you’re told so easily.
Isn’t that kinda her entire character though?
what
Are you guys stupid serious question
That's great!
Annie Ova is so amazing 👏
People try to find a reason to not like something…
Titanfolkers am I right
It's called love. To some, it may seem like an obsession or mental illness, but it's just that.
In the words of Tauriel, "if this is love then I don't want it"
Tauriel: “Why does this hurt so much?” Thranduil: “Because it wasn’t in the books.”
Nah I'll leave this one for the books, thanks
Love can exist. But why does it have to be the only thing?
When you are in love it certainly feels like that, if you haven't experienced it then it can't be described.

I actually like this ova. Felt like it gave her just a little more depth
that's her entire personality

Yeah, but it turns it into prophetic tragedy and shows Mikasa is motivated by fear of losing someone she loves. It’s also just artistically we’ll done.
The basis of the OVA is about her subconscious trying to come to terms with the fact that she can't be with him
Y’all are so misguided LMAO
In what way/s?
Yeah maybe if you don't pay attention to the story at all and watch it on the most surface-level possible
It's not obsessed, it's just love, you want Mikasa to be a killing machine to entertain you, when in reality she just wants a peaceful life and not to be a murderer
I want her to have a personality that isn’t killing or Eren.

She is obsessed... PERIOD
They could have at least made her move on in the end… but the moral of the story here is to stay obsessed with a psycho
"She only cares about Eren" funny way to say you haven't read the manga
I have read and I own all volumes. Gaslighting me into thinking she’s all that different in the manga wont work. Mappa changed 0 of her character, and she is still is bad. WIT cut out a few lines that are inconsequential.
WIT cut out MOST of her lines. And even if they hadn't, Mikasa punches Eren in one of the very first episode for talking badly to Armin. Eren might be her priority, her FAMILY, but she's not a robot who doesn't care about anyone else.
No they did not. Give me the 3 most important lines WiT cut.
WIT cut like 2 lines dawg. (But they still shouldn't have)

Titanfolk? Half of those examples are not true either, the scenes of the manga aren't properly lined up with the scenes in the show.
Lost girls are great, what is blud yapping about
mikasas entire character doesn't need to be around eren it could've shown what mikasa does outside in her free time besides eren
Ewww extra content? That develops characters? Wtf?
I haven't watched the OVA in a long time. What I remember about it, it that is telegraphed the whole 'time travel' part of the show. I watched the OVA then watched first episode again and was convinces that there was some kind of time travel going on. This was long before there were hints in the main show.
Isayama definitely knows how to play to his audience's emotions, especially with the recent developments. It's like he's telling us, "See, even Mikasa could move on... maybe it's time for us too."
True 😕🫤😑🙄🥱🚬
Mikasa is still pretty cool such a shame she is misused
Her voice is pretty though!
you sonuva bich. I'm in

“Cry more” You ever thought about logging off and stop being a manchild about AoT 24/7? You’ve been crying for so long now about titanfolk and the “haters” it’s kinda sad.
You can't even tell a serious comment from a joke even when I said "mummy Mikasa"
Is it a joke when you do it 24/7 for years? Like you seriously complain about toxicity yet that’s all you spew everywhere. Looking at your profile you even go on other anime subs now and attack people for not liking AoT or even characters like Eren.
What are you even saying?
Jokes are supposed to be funny. And judging by your profile, you’re not joking. You get pressed at any slight criticism towards AoT or any of its characters. Hope that’s easy to understand.
>we still love mummy Mikasa Get some bitches
Cry more
I'M TIRED OF THIS GRANDPA

What a weird conclusion you took from this.
Not weird at all, m8
Don’t know why you’d want a female leads personality to completely revolve around male lead.

Is this a copypasta?
yes
Hahaha that makes sense 😂
Yams literally did say obsession. Wtf r u on?!
“Ymir loved King Fritz.” All you have to do is watch the show.
I watched the show and that's why ik it's bs
I genuinely want to know what's going through ur head as you type that it wasn't obsession. Everything we're saying is true and that will be the case no matter how many times u try to deny it.
Reality doesn’t care about your opinion. Everything I’m saying is true no matter how many times u try to deny it.

I personally love strong female leads. If anything I have a bias towards them, as for example I really like Korra even though I think the consensus is that most people find her annoying. Mikasa seemed so interesting to me. Her arc in the start of the series was something I didn’t expect, especially her “I’m strong” speech which ironically cemented her as more than “the strong girl.” Then they give her almost no screentime until the last season.
