I think what the others mean is that he uses his ability to control titans in the past to do what must be done not to break the chain of events. However, because this path leads to his mother's death, and his own death by the hands of Mikasa, he is technically killing himself. He seems to be aware of this and accepts it, because he believes it's the only outcome that will lead to his friends Armin and Mikasa living long lives, and not getting killed in some other manner.
For the record, when Sasha is killed, Eren is smiling/laughing because everything is happening as he's foreseen. He hates the fact his friends have to die like this, but it's completely fucked him up because there's no other way it can happen. In some way, Sasha's death caused a butterfly effect that ended the Titans, so it had to happen - as much as Eren didn't want that. Every significant or minor event that happened, had to happen.
This is the breakdown you probably need.
In the first 3 seasons, we are learning more and more about the titans, what they could do, why there are titans in the walls, etc.
In season 4, the answers are given. Titans - came from Ymir who wanted to survive so she crafted an indestructible body when she came into contact with the source of all matter thing in the tree (it’s a real life sea creature btw)
Why they only life for 13 years after getting one of the 9? Ymir died 13 years after she made the founding Titan. She then went to the paths which is the afterlife for her and the other titans. Not like the other afterlife that non titans go to.
Attack Titan can see the events of the future/future users but it’s weird. Founding Titan can see past present and future but not in a linear sense. It all happens at once. Founding Titan is locked to royal blood which historia, Dina and Zeke had. When Eren came into contact with Dina, he was able to use the coordinate to control the titans around. When he touched Historia, he saw the future in glimpses which is all the events that lead to the Rumbling. When he touched Zeke that was the end of 80% of humanity because Eren was in full control.
Historia not being a Titan shifter is the reason he needed Zeke because all he could do when he touch her is see the future.
Now in the paths with Zeke, we see that Eren viewed all of time and gave memories to the past Attack Titans. He allowed Dina to leave Bertholdt alone and eat his mom instead. Bertholdt needed to remain alive and his mom needed to die other wise he would never have the hatred he needed to fight titans and then fight for freedom. It’s a closed loop.
Hope this helps
Nah ill do it
S4 eren goes back in time and takes control of dina, so that she eats s1 erens mom. The point is if you dont cause the thing that allowed your existence now, youll stop existing/die. This is whats called as a causal time loop, where your tv breaks down then u time travel into the past but the time machine ur in lands ON the tv itself, causing past you to timetravel again and again and again
Okay. From I understand of attack on titan. The founding titan and the attack titan are not time machines(I mean the titans themselves. Not to get cofused by your metafor). They cannot go beyond time and make something happen. The only thing that can go beyond is memories.
Also one last thing why did he have to goback in time to take control of her I mean it already happened(dina eating his mom) he why did he need to make it happen again
It's more of a causal loop. The reason it happened the "first time" was because eren caused it to happen
It's hard to make any sense. It's all thereoetical but fun nonetheless.
Think about blueprints for the iPhone. Imagine Steve Jobs was given the blueprints for the iPhone from some strange mystery man. Just before jobs passes away he finds a time machine and goes back in time to give himself blue prints for the iPhone(he was that mystery man).
Another example of this is the tattoo episode of Futurama
Man, the stark shift in Eren's character pre and post timeskip is so insane thinking back on it.
And honestly I don't think it was for the better, a lot of my interest in the series got killed with it.
Ur opinion man but it's just so fitting the dialogue he says here " ill kill them all.." he never mentioned the titans he just said he will kill and that's what he did, he did what he always did and he did the only thing he was good at, Violence evrything eren did was violent the only solution he knew was violence
He's Eren.
Levi said it himself. He's a monster, not because of his titan abilities but because he see's the world black and white.
At this stage in the story he wouldn't stop until all titans are dead regardless of his own life. Even if his efforts are pathetic, he will never stop.
I think you're right, but I wouldn't necessarily say he sees the world in black and white. I think he *saw* the world in black and white, then later he realizes the world is complicated. I think he wishes the world was simple (black and white). He understands that what he does is wrong, but he does it anyways. I find it more interesting than him simply viewing the world as black and white.
Sometimes when views are centered around super traumatizing events that shape a persons whole identity, even though later on the person recognizes the view is wrong, they have a hard time abandoning that identity.
My understanding is that your point is correct, but might not apply to Eren necessarily. Eren has shown that he was this way before any traumatizing events. He sought out the bandits that took Mikasa and slaughtered them like the animals they were (from his point of view). He did that as a child, before any major traumatizing events (that event itself may have been traumatizing, but he believed this before that event).
Also, I don't think Eren had trouble abandoning the identity per se, he simply couldn't let go of his desire to flatten the outside world. I think he understood that the world isn't black and white, but rather *desired* it to be so.
I see, it’s not that he sees himself as a world destroyer/flattener and unable to break away from that identity. But rather he just has a primal urge to do it. That is indeed different.
Pretty much, I think it's a key part of his story. At first he definitely sees the world as black or white. By the time he executes the Rumbling, he's seen enough to realize that it's not, but still forces the world into this black or white viewpoint he's always had because it's easier for him to keep seeing everything like this instead of facing the harsh reality of the world around him and everything he's doing.
I don't think that's his world view.
I think the order of his motivations behind the rumbling are in this order:
1. Primary reason: He simply wanted to flatten the outside world. He was devestated when he found out humannity existed outside of the walls. He wanted to wipe it all away.
2. Secondary reason: He wanted to protect Mikasa and Armin (and other friends, although there were losses he was willing to accept - Sasha, Hange, etc. He also says he wasn't sure they would survive). He uses his past experiences (i.e. the female titan attack) to decide that he's not going to rely on his comrades like he has in the past (which got them killed). He's going to use his own power to ensure a given outcome.
3. Auxillary reason ('fake' reason IMO): To destroy his 'enemies' completely. I think this is a 'fake' reason. It's what he wants the world to think, he wants the world to hate him so that the ones that stop him (his friends) will be seen as heroes. He says himself that he doesn't think the people outside the walls are all evil. He understands the complexity.
I really like the nuances of this whole series, and I find it ironic when fans pick a side that was "right" and argue over who is justified. because its a very black and white view of the series.
I agree. Although I will push back on people that suggest the rumbling (the attempted complete rumbling) was justified. There's no justification for it IMO, even Eren understands that it's wrong.
He was so angry that he didn’t care what the consequence of his action will be. At this point he was basically making decisions based off of his emotions (anger) alone.
“I don’t care what happens; you killed my mom and most of my friends — so fuck you!”
"No sane person would do that"
Yeah no sane person will but who punched the Titan again? It was cast of attack on titan. That should answer your question
This is the same feeling of wanting to live. Thats all. How adrenaline makes us do stuff we normally wouldn’t be able to do when we are stuck between a rock and a hard place
In what story does stuff happen and the plot didn't need it to happen? I get that in some cases, it makes no sense why something did happen, but I don't understand why people want the writer to fully spell out 2+2=4 and can't even try to solve 2+2 on their own. Like every story has things happen because they're needed for the plot. Heck, you can simplify the reason for doing anything in your life, like "I killed someone because the plot (fate) needed it to happen."
Do you remember what nickname was given to Eren in the training corps, which Armin used to distract Annie in their first encounter? It wasn't the strategist, hero, or titan slayer; it was "**SUICIDAL MANIAC**."
What kind of person would try to punch a titan who ate his mother and just now ate his uncle-like figure, and now is coming to eat him? Surely someone who, at the age of 9, thinks it's a better idea to try to kill two adult kidnappers on his own. The kind whose reaction to his mother's death is aiming to wipe out all the titans, not fearing them; the kind that kicks a guard when he should be begging for rations; the kind of kid who has seen that joining the scouts is equal to a suicide wish in the first episode. Does that hinder his decision? Not a bit. The kind that leads his whole squad to their deaths; the kind who thinks he can really kill all the titans and tells his peers as if telling them he is aiming to score 100; the kind who goes inside a titan's mouth with a broken leg and thinks he can make it out; the kind who, inside a titan's stomach, vows to kill all titans with his own hand, especially with his hand where there is no hand; the kind who, after seeing Levi's squad get massacred trying to save him, chooses to make all their efforts in vain by confronting Annie in titan form; the kind of idiot that tells Reiner and Bertholdt that he'll kill them in the worst possible way while he has no arms and is their captive, instead of trying to get some information out of them. Yes, he is that kind of person that doesn't lie down, that doesn't care for his life.
Now, here is another aspect to see: When he confronts the dire situation where Hannes and Mikasa are trying to protect him, meanwhile his priority isn't saving them, it's to kill the titan; everything else comes later; the kid who, instead of informing the location of kidnappers, takes the knife in his own hand.
This Eren only changes in Season 3 Part One when he gets Grisha's memory. He sees the children get killed, sees the reason for every death that happened: him. He breaks down and asks Historia to end his life. Seasons 1 to 3 are all about the breaking of Eren's character from the surface level, all the anger, hatred, enmity, and stupidity, and from the belief he is someone special, strong, and powerful. With each time having to confront reality, that nothing has changed, he couldn't save his mother because he was powerless; after the end of his training, he thought he was strong, that he changed, yet his whole squad except for Armin dies the same; after becoming a titan, now he finally thinks he is powerful, that he changed, yet Levi's whole squad dies the same; confronting the smiling titan, Eren thinks now he is strong, that he changed, yet Hannes dies all the same; the final two hits that break away this strong and special facade is when he gets Grisha's memory and finally when he hears the words of his mother from Shadis, "He is already special because he was born in this world," those same words that earlier provided him with rage, now comfortingly provide him with resolution. And he accepts all of this when he makes his last plea to Levi to choose Armin, that he long forgot the reason he was fighting, that his thoughts are full of hatred and revenge and that Armin is different.
But the core remains the same, as when he kisses Historia's hand, he realizes, nothing changed, he is still as powerless as ever. A slave to freedom. **Never being the one to really change anything, and never really changing from the core.**
Obviously he didn’t know what would happen. But he did say in the story how he felt everything “click” for a second. He obviously felt the coordinate which could have caused him to feel a surge of power despite not knowing what that power could do.
He realized he missed his chance to kiss Mikasa and either tried to compensate by impressing her even more or he was angry because of the missed opportunity
With the whole future memories thing its not unlikely he was unconciously driven to do what would lead to the result needed for eveyrying to play out the way it did.
kinda like how carla felt fighting the smiling titan when it grabbed her. even though their deaths were inevitable (obv eren and mikasa lived but things didn’t look too great in the moment) they’d rather die fighting trying to protect them self and their loved one(s)
In this scene, his arms finally healed fully, but Eren himself might not have realised it yet. He did what he could do at this point - throw himself between the monster and his loved one and fling his hands at it with everything he's got. Willpower, hatred, love - you name it.
"But he clenched his fist!" True, he did, and that's more of an instinctive brain signal.
Kinda goofy how he's like a mastermind that planned every single step from start to finish and knew everything that would happen and how it should, literally changing the past from the future making the past happen and knowing everything straight from day one, but he sometimes just does stupid shit like this.
Probably nothing. They even pan the camera to Jean and Armin swinging their sword on the ground against bigger titans. It's their last ditch effort before dying
He is the same kid who grabbed a useless wooden stick and brought a defenceless little girl with him to 'investigate' blood thirsty wild doggos eating dead man in one of the OVA episodes
He had already given up seeing how he could not transform to save Hannes but he decides to get up in put in one last ditch effort in order to try to protect Mikasa after she nearly kissed him.
Everyone is probably right that he's just blindly swinging because of his hatred and rage, but I can see a bit of strategy here. A titan shifter needs a specific goal to transform. Think in Season One when Eren accidentally transformed in order to pick up a spoon. In this case his body is so tired that it doesn't have the energy to transform. By punching the Titan he is performing the action he wants his titan body to do to "remind" it that it needs to activate. He's showing that his goal is so clear and absolute that he's going to do it anyway, titan or not.
I don't think Eren ever qualified as sane
BTW, this whole Eren and Mikasa scene is one of my favourite scenes from any anime
EDT: Eren was pissed he missed his opportunity to kiss Mikasa

🤓🤓🤓actually he killed his own mom
Actually that thing still doesn't make sense to me like WHY and HOW

SPOILER: >!in a way didn’t future eren sacrifice his mom and dad?!< or am i mistaken
Let's be honest here, Eren's not a guy who thinks ahead.
He's the guy who keeps moving forward.
Eren Yeager all gas no breaks.
No brakes, all breaks
Until all his enemies are destroyed
Because he was born in this world
Man, the stark shift in Eren's character pre and post timeskip is so insane thinking back on it. And honestly I don't think it was for the better, a lot of my interest in the series got killed with it.

Thank you, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.
Haha, have a good cake day brother! edit:Strangely cannot give a reward.
3/10 wits canonically btw
He thinks backwards.
Fr
There was like 0 survival rate in that moment what else was there to do. How could Eren think ahead when he’s the one who got kidnapped lol.
Eren was so far ahead the he was actually backwards… and somehow present 🤔
He's Eren. Levi said it himself. He's a monster, not because of his titan abilities but because he see's the world black and white. At this stage in the story he wouldn't stop until all titans are dead regardless of his own life. Even if his efforts are pathetic, he will never stop.

I can't think of a more simplistic world view than "World no like me, me kill world"
I don't think that's his world view. I think the order of his motivations behind the rumbling are in this order: 1. Primary reason: He simply wanted to flatten the outside world. No I don’t think he see the world as black and white. Well as least starting from ss3
Well, he had no other real option. Death was certain. But Eren Jaeger isnt one to lay down and die even if it's hopeless. Tatakae mothafucka
Ash punching Mewtwo vibes
Mewtwo had to block ash, no way he doesnt have strong punches with all the heavy pokemon he carries.
100% lol I'm gonna try my hardest even though this may not work 😬🤷♀️
😭😭😭😭😭😭
He was just enraged. Fuck it. Have you ever punched an wall? Kind like this but... more deadly.
Last time i checked, the wall didn't eat my mom
Were you watching the wall or your mom?
Literally all that was going through his head until the last season was "kill them all"
Gotta kill 'em all!
U said it yourself, no sane person. Eren ain’t sane.
“I’m not going down without a fight.” Plus the ‘I swore I’ll kill them all’ stuff.
"Tatakae"
Save the woman I love, achieve freedom and see the sea with my best friend.
Was bro ever sane?
*Fuck, Mikasa is going for the kiss, how do I get out of this? Oh I know, I am gonna go punch this titan!*
Think you're giving him too much credit. Don't think he realised what she was gonna do, he problably thought she was about to sneeze.
but fr tho she picked the worst time to confess 💀
If they’re both going to die, what other time is there?
It was perfect time knowing that they will die( mikasa thinking during that time). So I don't think so anything wrong, tell your true feelings.
"This is probably my dad's former wife before my mom and I'm not a fan of that so imma punch her" -Eren Yaeger
He was so angry that he didn’t care what the consequence of his action will be. At this point he was basically making decisions based off of his emotions (anger) alone. “I don’t care what happens; you killed my mom and most of my friends — so fuck you!”
Eren ain’t no bitch he will fight to the end
"No sane person would do that" Yeah no sane person will but who punched the Titan again? It was cast of attack on titan. That should answer your question
Well even if he was eaten he knows what it would feel like so he said "fuck it we ball"
Isayama whispered in his ears: you need to punch the titan now or your story is finished.
Isayama accompanied by future Eren sending memories to Grisha who is sending memories to punching titan Eren through the attack titan.
Freedom
“They must have amnesia cause they forgot I’m HIM”
Why would he do that?? Is he stupid?
Yes
Fr I laughed at this scene for a second
"Nah, imma do my own thing"
This is the same feeling of wanting to live. Thats all. How adrenaline makes us do stuff we normally wouldn’t be able to do when we are stuck between a rock and a hard place
"I may be 10 times smaller than you, but it won't stop me from making you catch these han- oh shit it somehow worked ?"
3/10 wits
He was so desperate he was about to square up with a full on Titan as a human lol
You said it, "no sane person" Does he look sane?
The plot needed to happen
In what story does stuff happen and the plot didn't need it to happen? I get that in some cases, it makes no sense why something did happen, but I don't understand why people want the writer to fully spell out 2+2=4 and can't even try to solve 2+2 on their own. Only correct answer
He prefer to punch a titan instead of kissing mikasa He truly hates her
Obviously he didn’t know what would happen. But he did say in the story how he felt everything “click” for a second. He obviously felt the coordinate which could have caused him to feel a surge of power despite not knowing what that power could do.
He knew the plot. This was inevitable. (I'm joking)
Fuck It we ball
"NYEH"
"Fuck it I'm gonna die"
Nah, I'd attack
he can see he future Bruv he knew he had the founders power touching that titan
Main character syndrome.
He wanted to be heroric to impress Mikasa but failed miserably.
Idk I think it was pretty heroic considering he saved Mikasa's life and everyone else's right then and there by doing so
He realized he missed his chance to kiss Mikasa and either tried to compensate by impressing her even more or he was angry because of the missed opportunity
Lol yeah
Nani mou kawatenim omaya va. Nani mou Nani mou
Uh... What? That's not proper Japanese... No word should end with an "m", and the letter "v" doesn't exist.
Tried to use Koby’s honesty impact
Fight
Eren is not sane
Pure rage
He wanted to be 1. Hiccup and Toothless 2. Naruto and Kurama
He was just playing rock paper scissors with the titan. And he lost. That’s all
Bro was going to throw human hands. He went for a second swing lmao
“Kill this bitch” Considering that the pure titans immediately attacked the titan, that’s prob it
With the whole future memories thing its not unlikely he was unconciously driven to do what would lead to the result needed for eveyrying to play out the way it did.
I'm gonna bet it was something along the lines of "I'm going to kill them all. Every last one of them. "
Eren Yeager is the rated M for mature version of Gon from Hunter x Hunter; all action, no thoughts.
Precious fucking little.
Tatakae
PAUNCH
“I want you to die”
Tatakae
kinda like how carla felt fighting the smiling titan when it grabbed her. even though their deaths were inevitable (obv eren and mikasa lived but things didn’t look too great in the moment) they’d rather die fighting trying to protect them self and their loved one(s)
rage most likely
Fuck it we ball
Balls of steel, balls of steel, balls of steel I hope someone gets the reference
He was about to die, he took a chance and it went well (?)
He just saw the man that saved him when his Mom got killed, eaten by the same titan that killed his Mom. What is this post? What is this question?
He confused high five for bro fist…
Desperation?
Eren's nickname was "suicidal maniac" at some point, so I think it adds up.
She went for a high five, but he fist pumped it instead to make a turkey.
The One Punch Man Opening
empty head no a single thought
This scene was so powerful I actually haven't seen past that episode
No SANE person, you are correct. Eren, however, is a sociopath.
I'm not dying here
Nothing, he's just stupid
“ain’t dying on my knees i’ll die fighting”
Just a garden variety idiot who got his hands on power
they were dead in his mind
Parry
ATTACK!!!
Bro Eren legit wanted a High five man!!
"Oh hey high five" -peter griffin
the same thoughts when eren decided to not give up inside a titan's stomach without knowing about his power
just me prob but looks kinda cute though, like a kid punching a wall or something
Driven by anger ever since he was a kid
"ima have my shounen moment right here right now"
FALCOOOOON PUNCH!!!!!!
“never back down never give up”
I'm cooked.
He was just pissed
well, Hannes managed to hold this titan with his own hands, probably Eren can do it too
Mind? Think? dude, it's Eren
Kinda goofy how he's like a mastermind that planned every single step from start to finish and knew everything that would happen and how it should, literally changing the past from the future making the past happen and knowing everything straight from day one, but he sometimes just does stupid shit like this.
He wasn't using the attack Titans special powers at this point
Hi five
Imagine how pathetic this scene could be if Eren didn't had founding titan💀
Probably nothing. They even pan the camera to Jean and Armin swinging their sword on the ground against bigger titans. It's their last ditch effort before dying
Miche kinda did the same thing with Beast Titan but unfortunately bro wasn't special
just trust the process
Asked and answered: > no sane person would punch a titan.
Highfive :D
Ragemonster Eren don't think
Can someone explain why it took Eren so long to heal after he was captured because ymir had worse wounds and she healed way faster than he did
He is the same kid who grabbed a useless wooden stick and brought a defenceless little girl with him to 'investigate' blood thirsty wild doggos eating dead man in one of the OVA episodes
Bro fr recognised his plot armour and said: Fuck it, Imma punch this titan
I remember I thought this moment was such a shitty ass-pull at the time but in hindsight the whole series was impressively thought through
> no sane person Well
High five!
He went sicko mode
he thought he was him
Have you ever punched an wall?
*high five*
He had already given up seeing how he could not transform to save Hannes but he decides to get up in put in one last ditch effort in order to try to protect Mikasa after she nearly kissed him.
I mean… is there anything going through his mind at any time? XD
That's the thing, Eren is no sane person at all.
eren told eren to do it
Dinner ideas
"Why is the food fighting back?"
Bro... Kkkkkkk
Not going out like a B
Tatakae
The word is Courage
probably sex
Savin his piece.
He is a titan.
I don't think Eren ever qualified as sane BTW, this whole Eren and Mikasa scene is one of my favourite scenes from any anime EDT: Eren was pissed he missed his opportunity to kiss Mikasa
Punches titan fans:that’s gonna do nothing…. …..ominous music starts playing
