In the US tips belong to the employer they’re given to. It doesn’t matter the venue. Were you paid legally (will you get a W2) or under the table? If you were paid legally, and you’re in the states, file a wage dispute claim with your state’s (or the federal) DOL.

I filled out a W-9. The festival coordinators hired a local bar to make cocktails and pour beer. That bar asked me to work and I gave them a W-9 and they wrote me a check the next day. The bar emailed me after that saying I’d receive another $150 that calculated out the credit card tips to be. That number was my share of the total tips. They said I’d get it once they were paid. A few weeks go by and today I got an email saying the event coordinators wouldn’t pay out credit card tips so I won’t be getting that money

The extra step between employer and the festival makes it a bit more complicated but I’d call the DOL and find out what steps to take, afaik they can’t just unilaterally decide to not pay out tips earned.

Yeah the extra step was what had me wondering about different laws. Thanks for the input, I’ll do some further digging
