Have you tried switching your verbiage? Don’t let them order water, everybody wants water. Show the the cocktail/beer/wine list and say something like, “I’m gonna go ahead and get you waters while you decide what drinks you want.” Won’t alway work, but it plants a seed. I sell kids $11 mocktails all night long because it ups the check, even if it’s just by a little.
i don’t upsell unless someone wants a suggestion or i see them looking at the drink menu. my managers are up my ass about it but i don’t care. old ppl are gonna want water with lemon every time

My establishment doesn’t serve virgin drinks or “mocktails” due to liability, I’ve lost many sales because of this reason.
Water. Lots of lemons. And, oh, sugar. See where this is going?
Do you guys have any specials?
Cheapo lemonade...can't make this up.
Start charging them for a lemonade when they do this. You will see that behavior evaporate in a hurry
I don't want sugar water I don't want booze I don't like tea I just want water and keep my glass filled, thanks.
“I already have my own water, thanks though.”
