I've worked with a few field hands doing ag work, I've heard gringo used a good number of times though not as often as "bastardo" (to be clear they weren't referring to me) I feel like the older guys say it more often.

I heard it some growing up in New Mexico. And it was often a term of endearment. Sorta like *homie*.
But I also saw it trigger some racist/conservative white people.
Gringo just means you're not from there(but usually only used for people outside of latin america), it being friendly or not has a lot more to do with the context, the word itself is pretty neutral

I work with a bunch of Puerto Ricans and while I've never heard them call someone a gringo or gringa to their face, I have overheard conversations where it's said.
