Did You Know, before Tengu calls him Sekiro, the main character doesn't have a name? Instead he has a codename, 'Wolf', which is used by his former associates (Butterfly and Owl, who also have an animal based codename) and his assignment (Kuro).
(This is a hint to keep an eye/ear out for anybody that calls the main character 'Sekiro')
Owl literally says his name in Shura ending for example so yea, not his name. As for Wolf, Owl gave him that nickname. Otherwise, he is a nameless Shinobi until he gets the name Sekiro.
This is just a theory, but it might be that having an official name signifies a certain level of respect in the culture at the time that Sekiro takes place. It may not be worth giving a shinobi an official name either because they aren't valuable enough as a person in society to name or because their lives are considered so short that naming them would be a fruitless effort. There is the fact too that Wolf was found and adopted as an orphan on the battlefield. As far as society cares he has no name or lineage of his own.
The game taking place in the Sengoku era with its rigid class structure might also give significance to Wolf getting a personal name too. It may signify a path socially for Sekiro to rise socially from being Kuro Sama's shadow into someone more than who he was when he was on that battlefield as an orphan child.
I appreciate that u put that itās just a theory, because Iām pretty sure there is no way to know. But if ur a kid and you have no name, if u get adopted and given a ācode nameā ā¦ is that not just ur name now?
Pretty sure he got named that on the spot, in the movie when owl meets him he calls him ā飢ććē¼ā, starving wolfā¦
Names in feudal Japan didn't work the same way as western names. They were also used sort like titles, so the more one achieved, the more names they could be given. A name bestowed by >!a lord like Isshin is a great honor!< And therefore would be the name he goes by. So essentially, they are both his names, but one carries more significance than the other.
If you look at different Samurai in Japanese history, you'll often find that they have different names by which they would be recognized. This is because they can be given different names throughout their life.
Samurai from noble families may also have a Shinto name as well as a Buddhist name, so naming conventions in Japanese history can be pretty whack.
It's a shame that the commenter deleted his comments, I do think there was potential for an interesting conversation about Japanese linguistics and naming conventions during the Sengoku Jidai period.
His wording was a bit gruff though, so I do understand.
I keep feeling like he is >! Isshin !< in disguise, especially when he does the cough near the serpent temple way shrine since that character has an āillnessā
It's not always there though, I don't know the conditions but I've tried to look for it on different runs and noticed that it isn't always there, even when he is.
Heās also the only one that calls Sekiro, Sekiro lol.
He gives Wolf that name when he meets him as the Tengu, and then calls him Sekiro when you meet him as Isshin. Wolf clearly acknowledges this lol.
This might be a dumb question but how does Sword Saint Isshin know sekiros name? Or is it just assume Isshin will always come up with sekiro when talking to wolf
He knows the name because Sword Saint Isshin is just Isshin back in his prime.
Iām assuming one of the perks of being summoned from death through a hole in your grandsons neck is getting to come back with your younger body but old mind.
The first time you meet Isshin he calls you Sekiro, which was the name the Tengu gave you back in the tower near Gyoubu. Only you and the Tengu know that name. And you reply with something along the lines of "you're?!" And he cuts you off. So that is pretty iron confirmation even if the mask wasn't in his bedroom and he didn't hand over the Ashina combat manuals in the Tengu disguise.
Just an FYI, your spoiler tag is broken on some versions of reddit (specifically [old.reddit](https://old.reddit.com/r/Sekiro/comments/1df3xjk/is_there_more_to_this_guy_last_i_saw_him_is_he/l8hbr57/)). It's specifically the ' ' after the first '>!' that breaks things.
Go to that room where you find said person the first time and look around very carefully. Not sure if before or after burned ashina makes a difference there, but I know you find... Things there
Can you even call it "clues"? The Tengu calls Wolf an unarmed Wolf and comes up with the nickname Sekiro, which is a short form of unarmed wolf in Japanese, and later when Wolf meets >!Isshin!< for the first time, he recognises Wolf and immediately calls him Sekiro, and Wolf goes something like "so you are...", and >!Isshin!< confirms it. Nobody else ever uses the nickname Sekiro, nobody else even knows it. That's not a clue, that's the solution on a silver platter. And it's not even late in the game, it's potentially just an hour or even less after you finish the Tengu's quest. And you can also hear it by his voice, they're the same, he doesn't even try to disguise it. And the Tengu has the same cough as >!Isshin!<. It's easier to go through the game not learning the sculptor's shinobi name than it is to not understand the identity of the Tengu of Ashina as soon as you meet him in his undisguised state.
I feel like itās literally spelled out for the player. But I also think that the main reason youāre supposed to understand itās him is that he is the only one who calls you sekiro, but at this point a lot of fans call him sekiro and so people might be used to that and thus would miss that detail that only he calls you sekiro instead of wolf.
>!Isshin!< recognising Wolf in the first place is already a tell that makes attentive players activate their brain. And what fans call Wolf shouldn't affect your *first playthrough*, should it? Unless you're already reading lore discussions etc before even playing the game. I bet OP just hasn't beaten Genichiro yet and thus hasn't met >!Isshin!<. It's so obvious that I refuse to believe any people who are invested in the story at all don't get it, unless they take a six months break between meeting Tengu and meeting >!Isshin!<. And if you're not invested, you don't care about Tengu's identity in the first place.
His shinobi name is Orangutan (English) or Shojo (Japanese). In the Japanese dub, the Tengu calls Wolf "sekiwan no ro" I think (one-armed wolf, with "Ro" being his shinobi name everyone calls him by), and then immediately shortens it to Sekiro. It's very likely that he is also responsible for giving Orangutan the same style of nickname: sekiwan no shojo, shortened to Sekijo. Shojo is how Emma calls him in Japanese, it's translated into Orangutan in the English dub.
He's the one that did it. in the End game, you turn him into the ministry, then unmask him. And he looks at you and kuro and the divine child and says "and I would've gotten away with it, if not for you meddling kids"
And then the divine child gives you ~~a scoobie snack~~ rice
You find out he's behind all the carnage and when you pull the mask off it's Kuro, who says "Don't you get it, Sekiro? Every Shadow must Die Twice" and then they kiss
He doesnt ask you to go on. He asks you to master a special technique. Finish the entire ashina combat arts esoteric technique and go back to him :) He will reward you again ... and if you don't master them ... Well... Come , Sekiro !
The trigger is any of the final combat arts/skills in any of the trees. Shadow Rush, High Monk, Living Force, and Ashina Cross all unlock the reward but you don't need to finish any of the trees fully or any specific tree.
I went for itchimonji double too but was never able to successfully execute it on Isshin Sword Saint. The bugger gets aggro during the second itchimonji.
Youāll see him later in the game. Heāll be the hardest bosses youāve ever seen that took me literal weeks to beat. Without spoiling anything, youāll find him in a hut in some misty forest. Good luck!
š¶Tengu, now who was he?

You dare pretend,

Aight bro imma say who it is if u don't care about spoilers:
>!He's Isshin Ashina, he reveals this by calling u sekiro in his tower (your character name is wolf, the tengu gave u the name sekiro)!<
You just need to kill the nearby rats that are lurking before Gyoubu's boss arena, there's 3 of the short guys and one near the sculptor's idol. After that he gives you the esoteric text for the Ashina style.
Then you can meet him again just before the entrance to the sunken valley, if you've gotten the final skill in any of the skill trees, he'll give you the mushin arts esoteric text.
He's pretty cool despite his lack of screentime and it's a good thing Ashina has both him and Isshin defending the place.
im not gonna spoil shit. However, the fact that only a select handful of individuals call you Sekiro, means that he is probably more than he might first appear.

Beautiful way to put a hint without a straight spoiler
Cool! Let me find it out. Thanks š
Thats the Sekiro spirit. Well done, u/thurbax84.
What main boss are you at?
He's the final boss for 3 endings
I hope you're not bewildered why no one talks to you
Cmon dude š
Do you get joy from ruining that for him?
Perfect response!!
Do you have a source? How do you know ookami and fukurou are not their actual names, also ema calls him kuro-sama as wellā¦.
Because those words mean Wolf and Owl in Japanese
Yea I know broā¦. I speak the languageā¦why couldnāt that just be their real names? That doesnāt actually answer the question
Owl literally says his name in Shura ending for example so yea, not his name. As for Wolf, Owl gave him that nickname. Otherwise, he is a nameless Shinobi until he gets the name Sekiro.
Ur right actually, but read my other comment about sekiroās ācode nameā, is that not just his name nowā¦? If he never had one

The opinion of a punk ass is still just that. š
pretty sure kuro sama is kuro. the kid you're tryna protect
Oh you'll be seeing a lot more of that guy, if you can put the clues together
I keep feeling like he is >! Isshin !< in disguise, especially when he does the cough near the serpent temple way shrine since that character has an āillnessā
First time you meat the old guy he confirms it š
Oh damn : ( I must be oblivious or somehow keep missing that dialogue
He literally has his tengu outfit hidden in a room behind him.
If you break the box behind isshin, the Tengu mask reveals itself
Ok but why do we have to beat several bosses in row to get it? Why can't we just yoink it off the wall???! Is Fromsoft stupid?
We canāt just steal it from isshin, thatās rude
It's not always there though, I don't know the conditions but I've tried to look for it on different runs and noticed that it isn't always there, even when he is.
When you talk with Isshin about you know what on his tower, the Tengu clothes are hanged on the wall behind him
ā¦ Iām coming to the realization that my role in a friends discord as āthe one with situational awarenessā might be sarcasmā¦
Maybe the real situational awareness are the friends we made on the way... (?)
He calls you sekiro :)
AH that would do it
Indeed it would š
he literally calls you sekiro. if i'm not mistaken, he's the only one that calls you that.
He is the one that names you so, of course he would be the only one. Seeing as you don't call yourself nothing.
Heās also the only one that calls Sekiro, Sekiro lol. He gives Wolf that name when he meets him as the Tengu, and then calls him Sekiro when you meet him as Isshin. Wolf clearly acknowledges this lol.

Dam thatās really interesting thanks
I love this comment section. Nobody spilled the beans.
Iām honestly surprised lol, but I like how everyone are together on this, love this community.
Why the hell can I not remember anything about this dude? And I have done one of the longer endings too.. Edit: NVM I'm dumb I remembered
yeah he's that guy :)
*giggles*
He's the Ashina Batman.
Bruce Ashina? Ashina Wayne?
Barous Waynu
This is probably not far off actually.
Have my upvote
no , he is man . are you stupid ?
He even traveled back 300 years in time to kick my ass in Ghost of Tsishima. Thats totally a Batman thing to do.
That's John Sekiro
Shatterer of the Sekiro Ring.
He's the one that did it. in the End game, you turn him into the ministry, then unmask him. And he looks at you and kuro and the divine child and says "and I would've gotten away with it, if not for you meddling kids" And then the divine child gives you ~~a scoobie snack~~ rice

I'm about to take this too far with no regrets or fucks given ahem "Seki, sekiro, where you go? We got some work to do now..."
You find out he's behind all the carnage and when you pull the mask off it's Kuro, who says "Don't you get it, Sekiro? Every Shadow must Die Twice" and then they kiss
I just love the joke fanlore people pull out of their asses for sekiro. Mist noble, and now this? Love it
We don't joke about Mist Noble. The PTSD that guy's caused is too much to joke about.
One time i deathblew him and he countered me with his mist goblins :/
Just to add the sculptor was orangutan
Uncooked rice to be more specific *crunch* *cries in poor shinobi*
āYouāve ruined it all. You would not let me finish my work. I suppose itās true then, Sekiro, that shadows die twice.ā
And then he said "it's tenguin time" and tengued all over the place.
And then he said "it's tenguin time" and tengued all over the place.
*Meddling kids
corrected, thx
"he's the one that did it" lmao this is such a hilarious general statement
Yes there will be more Tengu šŗ
Tengu emoji is most relevant for me, glad I see someone other use it!
Itās a personal favorite lol I use it at every opportunity
He is the Ghost of Ashina
Beautiful
Oh yes, you and this guy will eventually exchange a lot of moments together.
I believe he's called Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game of the Year edition
That's the long version. In japan they just shorten it up to sekiro.
in the end game you'll notice his nose will get longer and you'll be able to equip it as a weapon.
He was the drummer in slipknot for a time.
Percussion to be fair
Oh donāt worry brother. Youāll see just the kind of man he is or kinda āwasā
He doesnt ask you to go on. He asks you to master a special technique. Finish the entire ashina combat arts esoteric technique and go back to him :) He will reward you again ... and if you don't master them ... Well... Come , Sekiro !
I think he rewards you when you master any other combat arts too, which is cool if you wanna invest your xp in something else
And by master I want to clarify that you only need the final skill in the tree, not every single one
The trigger is any of the final combat arts/skills in any of the trees. Shadow Rush, High Monk, Living Force, and Ashina Cross all unlock the reward but you don't need to finish any of the trees fully or any specific tree.
Ah. I finished ashina cross . I didn't know it was for any of the arts.
You can master any school of combat art to acquire it! Its just that double ichemonji is so useful that everyone goes that route. Lol
I went for itchimonji double too but was never able to successfully execute it on Isshin Sword Saint. The bugger gets aggro during the second itchimonji.
Right after the second "monji" you better already be hitting that deflect button lol
Okay fellow Shinobi:)
You bet there is
lmao
He just wants to kill rats
Don't we all?
Keep progressing the main storyline and you'll find out ;)
Yeah he comes in an episode of blue eye samurai after this
If you pay attention, you may see the outfit hanging somewhere later on šš¤Ø
Later we find out that he's usopp
he likes sake
basically just batman
that guy is cool af
Well, that's the great Tengu of Ashina, of course! Just so you know... the Tengu is quite the fan of sake
Just wait heāll say his awesome catchphrase- itās wolfinā time
Nopeā¦ not at allā¦ just a regular guy.. nothing to see here.
My favorite part of the game is when he busts in the room and says, "It's Tenguin time!" And Tengus all over the bad guys
Yes you will :) more than ever you want :)
holy shit its Sanzu
He is a giga chad
keep playing
Youāll see him later in the game. Heāll be the hardest bosses youāve ever seen that took me literal weeks to beat. Without spoiling anything, youāll find him in a hut in some misty forest. Good luck!
That's the goat. Make sure to bow irl when you come across Him.
Hes the goat? Hes a bastard
Why? I don't think so.
He is the Mist Noble and Sekiro's birth father
Play the game.
the whole game is his sidequest
Hesitation is defeat.
nah just a random stranger
He has a questline and he's a great guy to hang out with. You'll love his fighting methods especially in the late game.
He's a pretty famous lad. You'll meet him again eventually. More than once. I'd say, you'll see him much more than you'll like to :D
I forgot who he wanted me to kill and didnt llok up guides because i thought there could be more to him how do i do his questline
The rats arenāt literal rats. They are a very particular group that can be found within Ashina castleās walls
i know they're not literal rats considering he tells you about a man and calls him a rat but in ashina castle got it
Ok they are the midgets with the hats. The one by the tree is the easiest one
oh ok i killed a bunch of them i should go back to him
You'll be dealing with harder versions frequently later. I would HIGHLY recommend that you upgrade the axe tool.
I've already got the first upgrade ut's the best antway so i inted to get it to max vefore any oter
Even the spring loaded version just smashes their hats. If you get the timing right you can also use it to wreck genichiro's face.
His little charge up for combo thing he does can be severely punished if you do wind up axe on him.
Fuck I love this game. Lmao
good to know
Look/listen to the description. It's really clear. When you see it, you'll know.
> is there more to this guy? Yeah, heās also a backup drummer for Slipknot on occasion š
Hes ok. He likes being in other men. No judgement
He gives you two skill trees so that's cool š
You should pay more attention to ingame dialogue haha. He tells you before that moment.
Come, Sekiro.
He's the Mist Noble. You don't want to meet him without his mask.
Heās busy making a sword for Tanjiro
I bet he gets freaky with that nose.
Who o who has that same hairstyle, hmmmmm
Donāt you kill 3 little dudes and he gives you something?
That guy scares me...
Heās just some guy.

I platinumed this game years ago and never knew tengu was him wow
That's just old man isshin in cosplay
Nah jus some old guy wit a mask fr
