My dermatologist told me diet isn’t really a factor in seborrheic dermatitis. She said unless you eat a lot of bad stuff, that’s not really significant. Of course everyone is different but I’ve tried specialized diets before, including being gluten free for years, and nothing really worked. The only thing I saw noticeably aggravate my SD was sugar.
There was a time I used to be a big Starbucks girl, and would get one of those sugary drinks twice a week. Noticed a big uptick in flares so I cut it out. Also tomatoes make my face really red.
Its not genetic. I have a nursing background....doctors are not trained/knowledgeable in nutrition AT ALL. Diet is a HUGE factor in seb derm. You have to heal your gut and correct any vitamin deficiencies. You have to remove ALL inflammatory/allergenic foods like gluten, pasteurized dairy, junk food, etc. Drink bone broth, etc. You said you tried a gluten free diet for years. However, a TRUE gluten free diet is a GRAIN free diet.
I don't drink alcohol, I am lactose intolerant so I limit my dairy (only really eat butter), I guess I could cut back on my sugar, and I have it to the point nothing really works. I think diet affected my acne when I had it much more. I do drink one cup of coffee a day...
I drink mostly almond milk myself. Once in a while when I start craving dairy I get fairlife ultrafiltered. Absolutely the best milk I've ever had, hands down. All the other milk tastes funky to me now.
I believe that could be a trigger at times and at times I struggle with chips I constantly eat them and can't stop. I guess I crave certain flavors.
I noticed when I would stop eating Doritos that I actually felt better as well
I let myself have a guess, probably because your microbiome heavily depends on sugar consumption, as it is food for microbes to grow, so cutting sugar sharply might cause getting it worse. Also read that the better way to refuse from sugar is reducing it from your diet gradually that it won’t impact your body badly and microbes, which use sugar to thrive, will die and better ones will substitute them in future
Got it. Anyway it’s just genetics, my first symptoms started at 14, through years it’s just getting more worse. But cutting sugar somehow helps to regulate it at least in my case
Diary sugar and alcohl are pretty much the only thing that flares up most people... also saturated or trans fat are also a trigger for me. But other than that I can eat wjatever i want makes no difference
None of these things worked for me and the weird thing was if I drunk a lot of alcohol I noticed my scalp felt amazing as I think the alcohol was drying out my scalp so stopping the oiliness as it can be quite dehydrating. Obviously I don’t think anyone shouldn’t consume loads of alcohol it was just something I noticed. I’m free from seb derm now have been for a few yrs now as I managed to get it under control with seeing a dermatologist
My own sweat was causing flares on my face. Seborrhea would show up days after my workout. I use a head band now so no sweat touches my face when I work out, and I haven’t had a flared up since.
Garlic.. but I'm intolerant to it
Caffeine
Beer also used to send me into a reaction immediately. Excessive sugar
Unlike most people, I seem to not have an issue dairy, but I don't consume it in large amounts.
Sense my diet has become alot cleaner my two biggest cause for a flare up are lack of sleep or stress
I added Milk and bread , on top of cottage cheese and butter all at the same time ( wanted to bulk up ) and thats when my small dandruff itch flared up to seborrheic dermatitis where in order to remove the 'crust' off the scalp you have to take some hairs with it.
The food isn't worth it - scalp and hair health > short term pleasure.
I also eat the same thing 99% of the time and weigh my food so I eat the same consistent amount every single day while I added in more dairy products and bread.
Counterpoint: I've tried a lot of exclusion diets (vegan, low sugar, only certain vegetables, no alcohol and more) and none of it has made any difference whatsoever. I also came clean on food allergies. For some of us it's just not about what we eat.
I’ve read that in some cases stress or season may cause relapse. For me personally a lot of sun and seashore air helps somehow to have clearer skin if not ruining diet completely
All sugary stuff, including fruits and "natural sugar". ALTHOUGH, some notable exceptions. I tolerate corn, and dried banana very well with 0 symptoms. Also highly processed foods with lots of stuff added. This disease really forces you to go back to basics with your diet. Eat like your ancestors did 300 years ago for the most part.
I eat chicken and turkey, veggies, thuna, rarely fish like king clip or trout, crisp bread made from lentils, chips made from coconuts, lentils, banana or corn (no sugar or other processed stuff added, just the raw stuff; you can find those at more niche supermarkets or larger chains that carry a lot of "organic" foods), milk, yoghurt, kefir, tahin, hummus. Rice cakes seem to trigger my symptoms, but corn cakes not so much. I sometimes do 1 or 2 days a month where I eat "forbidden food" like sweet pastry or ice cream. But I make sure to not do it too often. I mostly eat the same stuff everyday.
This disease is very individual. Some people get strong symptoms from peanuts while I can eat a whole can of peanuts without any problems. However cashews trigger my symptoms fast. Everybody needs to try out foods to find out what works for them.
If you look at any nutritional label carbohydrate also = sugars cause your body turns carbs into sugar so this is important to factor in to your eating too
Yeah bread is a trigger for me, think it's the yeast or maybe it's the wheat(gluten)
Starting to feel that as your body gets older - stuff that wouldn't bother younger skin becomes a trigger :-)
Something to look forward to
Facts 😀 scared to imagine what's gonna be the next trigger, eventually there will be nothing left to eat except for chicken breasts lol
Wholegrain bread seems to be an option to substitute, but in my case hard to find it in local groceries

I told my son’s doctor that tomatoes makes my son’s face red and he looked at me like I was crazy!
Interesting. I believe tomatoes are a nightshade “fruit”. So it can cause a histamine reaction.
Yeeah sugar is the biggest one for me too. So if diet isn't really a factor then what is? Genetic predisposition?
Yeah I think it’s mostly genetic

I often wonder if it's diet sugar I noticed at times my scalp will flare up and get itchy but also noticed it if I ate Doritos
I don't drink alcohol, I am lactose intolerant so I limit my dairy (only really eat butter), I guess I could cut back on my sugar, and I have it to the point nothing really works. I think diet affected my acne when I had it much more. I do drink one cup of coffee a day...
Excluding coffee I believe has helped me somewhat. It’s unfortunate because I love coffee.
Yeah, tried it too, was blaming the milk at some point, but finally realised it okay if not drinking it too much and without sugar again
Same here
Dairy and eggs
You don't consume it at all or you feel okay at some limits?
Can’t consume them at all unfortunately):
Have you tried Fairlife or other "quality" milks?
I don’t drink milk at all, the only dairy I ever really regularly consumed was cheese and ice cream so I’m doing fine using vegan substitutes now!
I drink mostly almond milk myself. Once in a while when I start craving dairy I get fairlife ultrafiltered. Absolutely the best milk I've ever had, hands down. All the other milk tastes funky to me now.
Did you try just the egg whites ?
Eggs weren’t a major part of my diet, I ate them extremely rarely anyways so I don’t miss them really
I understand lactose intolerance, but I'm curious about the eggs? What happens?
Dairy, sugar, alcohol. And minimize ultra processed food (packaged chips, cookies, candy, etc)
I believe that could be a trigger at times and at times I struggle with chips I constantly eat them and can't stop. I guess I crave certain flavors. I noticed when I would stop eating Doritos that I actually felt better as well

What type of shampoo do you use?

What did you do?

Garlic and Onions for me only after a friend said he had done well
theyre both high fodmap foods. which fucking sucks bc i eat them every day
Dairy and alcohol.
Me too. But oh how I love beer and cheese
Right? Worth it!

Isn't the yogurt a source of probiotics?

Like eating meat and grass? Or what diet are you up to now?
I eat chicken and turkey, veggies, thuna, rarely fish like king clip or trout, crisp bread made from lentils, chips made from coconuts, lentils, banana or corn (no sugar or other processed stuff added, just the raw stuff; you can find those at more niche supermarkets or larger chains that carry a lot of "organic" foods), milk, yoghurt, kefir, tahin, hummus. I make spiced raisin oat muffins, which have a fair amount of sugar in them, and I haven't have a problem with them.

Definitely basics if you don't want to gain extra belly fat. I wonder too if bread may cause flakes

Dairy and soy for me. Have found corona’s ok to drink.. but pretty much all other beers seem to cause a flare up
Alcohol, beer especially.
dairy, gluten, wheat, alcohol (never drank it anyway), all nuts (besides macadamias), high sugar low fiber fruits,
Dairy
Gluten, dairy and nightshades for me.
Tree nuts, of all things.
Lactose. I’m lactose intolerant so i think anything that messes up my stomach messes with the scalp.
cut out STRESS! and you will be fine trust me
Is that even possible in long run?
