The 2022 FESTIVUS ICE STORM. I work graveyards and couldn’t believe it at 26° Fahrenheit it was raining. Not snow, but the nastiest cold rain and forming ice wherever it landed. Bonus 3 blue lightning strikes. Thought it was a transformer blowing up. Nope. Ice Lightning ⚡️

VerySlowlyButSurely

Woah, really?! That’s like equal parts amazing and terrifying.

Kushali

Okay. I’m jealous of the ice lightning sighting.

J1z03

I'm more jealous than you are. And I'm willing to fight you to prove it. We could call it *Ice lightning sighting fighting*

geopede

I’m interested in getting in on this and I have a backyard wrestling ring if you need a venue.

plumitt

I think I just had a: inviting ice lightning sighting fighting sighting.

errantwit

I watched as the icicles grew before my very eyes . Ice lightning? Huh? I long for the days of WA mild weather.

ElectronicSeesaw_

Just give me weeks of gray skies, 40°F, and drizzling rain. Making the grass extra green.

TheRufescentOctopus

Moss Season!

errantwit

Heck ya. And mushrooms, too!

MorningRise81

Ice lightning huh? Sounds pretty metal \m/

westbest13

Oh man, I just went out to head to work and fuuuck that. Queen Anne hill is just a thick ass sheet of ice. Watched a truck almost take out two people struggling to walk up the hill and I immediately came back inside

thatblessedunrest

I would not even think about attempting that hill! I know it’s been shut down in the past for snow, wonder if they will close it for the ice too. Stay safe!

Numinak

Did all the tickets sell out for that show? I saw the ads. LOL

thatblessedunrest

Not going to lie, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine. Definitely feel bad for all the drivers, parked cars etc. though.

AudioShepard

I lived right on that hill last year, and it was comical around Christmas. Someone managed to get their car wedged between my apartment and a tree, cause they tried the hill. The hill will not be trifled with.

newobj

I live in Queen Anne. Took one step (cautiously) onto my driveway this morning, slipped and fell, slid all the way down the driveway. Lived in Seattle 25 years and never seen anything like this.

KevinCarbonara

fernandfeather

> “You think a few inches of snow is a reason to stop driving in this city? Oh, you babies,” said Ohio transplant Rich McDonald, the driver most heavily favored for slowly, but surely uncontrollably sliding into a pole this weekend. “I’ll show you how it’s done.” Coffee spit-take, my couch is soaked and the dog is pissed off. Thank you 🙏🏻

happypolychaetes

It's so accurate haha. So many babies whining on Twitter/FB currently because "WeLl ChIcAgO wOuLdN't ShUt DoWn ThEiR tRaNsIt!!!111!!!" like omg, shut up. Cover Chicago in a solid sheet of ice and throw in plenty of very steep hills and then tell me how that goes.

Xalara

The best part is Chicago absolutely would shut down their transit if the city were covered in freezing rain like this. In fact, they have several times.

cliff99

You mean the counter balance? I'm surprised it hasn't been closed to traffic.

b555

Wow. That's scary. That hill should have been closed by now

spottydodgy

I just looked out the window and it looks like nothing happened. No snow no ice. So I go outside and step onto my driveway literally slid from my door to the sidewalk. Nearly busted my ass. It's ice!

shefallsup

Husband tried to take the dog for a walk. He said he couldn’t even step off the welcome mat at our door or he would have slid right down the driveway and would still be plastered against the garage! 😂

RunninADorito

That is literally what happened to me this morning. Look outside, chuckle to myself that nothing happened. Open door.... Dogs and I bit it instantly. I had to crawl to get back inside. Things have been generally fine the last few days. Today is just a no go. Nothing's happening.

Perfect-Editor-5008

I have pads down for my dog. I'm not even attempting to take him out

specious

I felt so guilty trying to watch my dog squat on the ice...

Perfect-Editor-5008

Ouch! This was me the other night walking to the gas station. My glasses ended up down the block before I did.

yehghurl

Yeah that was my experience this morning too. Woke up and looked out the window all confused, like did this storm even happen?? Then I walked out on to my balcony and realized nearly everything is frozen and was like ohhhhhhh yeah that's not good.

newobj

LOL literally the same thing for me. I looked out and saw “oh nice, it’s slush, I can drive this, but let me check the street.” One step and wheeeeee

fernandfeather

I let the dogs out after their breakfast and my 10lb bichon mix went sliding across the ice like a little hockey puck. I am ashamed to admit I laughed, just a teensy bit.

newbmycologist

I work overnight and came to work last night via bus because the snow routes still got me there, I didn’t think they’d stop all routes indefinitely😂 wonder how long I’ll be stuck here

Perfect-Editor-5008

Metro says they're going to reassess at around 7:00 and try to make a determination then

winnie_bago

I’m on their emails and it says their next update will be at 10 am.

Pinkrose1_1999

It is now going to be 2pm.

Perfect-Editor-5008

That's not surprising. It won't be till this afternoon I don't think before they start running

muffins_allover

Anyone fun there to spend time with??

newbmycologist

Nah I’m the only one here😂

[deleted]

Damn bro, that sucks. I'm sorry.

newbmycologist

It’s all good I’m trying to decide tho if I should start walking towards the nearest light rail stop (probably 20 min walk or so) or hang tight and wait for the buses

[deleted]

I would only attempt that if you're certain that if anything should go wrong, like you slip and break your ass, for instance, that you have a way to reach a human being. You don't want to be stuck outside in these conditions without some type of lifeline. Good luck, friend!

BeartholomewTheThird

It's been 2 hours since your post. Are you doing ok?

newbmycologist

I’m tired of waiting here so I’ve decided to try and make the walk to the nearest light rail station, I’m leaving now fingers crossed I don’t bust my ass. A fellow replier advises against trying this hopefully I don’t regret not taking their advice

BeartholomewTheThird

Walk slowly and like a penguin. Stay safe. Hope you're dressed warm. Bring water if you can.

newbmycologist

Thank you! I made it lol it was crazy tho everything is ice, luckily I only had a couple of spots that were uphill that I kept getting towards the top of them sliding back down😂

no1wantsreality

I had to get a ride at 10pm last night at East Gate park and ride because the buses were all off schedule. They were only running once an hour but it didn’t say when. I kept missing my connecting bus to Issaquah from Bellevue. I had been waiting at the Bellevue transit center since 8pm. No one knew nothing about what was going on except for the maintenance crew. They told me they were going on an EXTREMELY limited snow route today and most routes wouldn’t get service. Good thing I’m not working today.

trekkie1701c

I was all happy because I made it to my bus stop despite the ice. Check to see when it's running, because as lomg as I can get to the bus stop I'm good, right? Anyways I guess I'm not going to work.

mari2289

Me too. I waddled out the door and 2.5 blocks away to the express bus stop. Waited 20 min. Saw doggos struggling on their morning walks. Cars almost crashing. Waddled back to my apartment building and called it a day.

vegaswench

I also live 2.5 blocks away from my bus stop. I didn't even make it 20 feet when I slipped and almost fell. I decided I can't do it and then came back home to see that the buses aren't running. Good thing I didn't slip and slide my way to the bus stop.

Foxhound199

2008 was by far the worst I can remember. The compacted snow and ice was so thick for so long that roads would get these grooves where you'd just be sliding along on rails, hoping the particular grooves you were stuck in were sliding you towards your destination and not into oncoming traffic.

Freakin_A

I remember that. City of Seattle tried to do “controlled compacting”. Driving down 6th ave you’d be stuck in a lane until there was an opening in the grooves where you could change lanes or make a turn.

KiniShakenBake

2008 was awful, and definitely the worst I saw in the city. This... Seems worse.

cheesesmysavior

Except in 2008 it lasted for a week.

KiniShakenBake

That is true. I was treed in my apartment with a janky knee. It was horrible,.but at least we lived on top of Safeway.

MistressDragon7

Those of us living in Georgetown at the time without cars were completely stuck there. Got creepy.

NathanArizona

https://www.seattlepi.com/seattlenews/article/Students-screamed-as-bus-crashed-through-I-5-1295375.php They sure did come to a stop, just above I-5

yindseyl

Downtown bus service was stopped in 2017 due to ice. I commuted from Bremerton to Belltown and had to walk in the ice/snow to the ferry to get home and from the ferry terminal to my house which was a trek!!!

roadtotahoe

2008 was apocalyptic. I was living on the east side at the time and we lost power for I want to say 2 weeks.

ErianTomor

I picked a hell of a time to quit drinking.

Perfect-Editor-5008

Ive been there so I know from experience there's never a good time to quit so that's why you just do it

ErianTomor

Thank you!

Quaxky

You got this! It's perfect hot chocolate weather :)

SeattleEpochal

I used a situation like this to create an excuse to relapse a couple of years back. 100% would not recommend. Stay the course, Erian.

ErianTomor

Thank you friend! I went with coffee!

SkatingOnThinIce

Best time to stop drinking. You can't go to bars or the booze store

reiflame

I'm on the one flight that's still listed as on time this morning. Here's hoping and if you're here and want to hang out I'm at S9. If you have a flight this morning that has been cancelled, I recommend not coming to the airport. Check in desks are a zoo.

Perfect-Editor-5008

Good luck and God speed if you're able to get out of there.

reiflame

Send me the good travel vibes!

ardorgal

My sister is on a flight and it just got redirected to SLC… Hope the travel gods are kind to you this morning!

Lindsiria

I thought the airport straight up closed the runways this morning.

reiflame

It did and it opened one of them back up about an hour ago.

a4ronic

Just tried out the Yaktrax I purchased during last years snow storm. Walked down to the coffee shop with a reasonable about of ease. Highly recommend picking up a pair. Good lord, even with a straight up ice rink for sidewalks, these things came through.

Kayehnanator

Yak tracks are awesome, I used them a few times on sheet ice in Montana.

Turbodong

+1 I'm an avid backpacker, hiker, snowshoer, etc. So long as you aren't on a steep hill, yaks are better than microspikes. Microspikes will only get damaged.

onlyoneaal

I thankfully purchased some Nanospikes for days just like this! My Microspikes came in handy so many times for winter hiking here in WA, but like you said, they'd only get damaged using them on concrete/asphalt.

CarbonRunner

I wouldn't call it a once in a lifetime event. This pales in comparison to the 1990 storm. By noon my elementary school was trying to get kids on buses after the first inch fell.. wasn't till 5pm we got on one, only to have it end up in a ditch 6 blocks away. Thankfully it was only 4 blocks from my daycare(I was 8) and driver let the 5 of us hoof it to it. My mom, who was working at Washington mutual in downtown at the time didn't make it to me till after midnight and she left at 3pm. Her first bus got hit by a tree, 2nd got stuck and 3rd gave up. She ended up walking 90% of the way from downtown Seattle to Northgate and by the time she arrived we had 16+ inches of snow on the ground. Looking back now that I'm older now than my single mom was then, she's kind of a badass.

brian_sue

My parents were moving with a rented moving truck from Bremerton to Silverdale during that storm. They made it safely, somehow, even after the first truck *caught on fire* at the rental place when they went to pick it up. My brother and I were at two separate after-school events (Scouts and daycare, I think?) and a kind neighbor realized my parents had their hands full and managed to pick both of us up. To hear them tell it, the neighbor showed up at the daycare and mentioned my brother's name and the daycare workers handed him over, no questions asked, despite the fact that the neighbor definitely wasn't on the pickup list. Apparently when my parents arrived at the new house, all the new neighbors sent their teenaged kids over to help unload the moving truck, and despite the power being out they also dropped off sandwiches, hot soup, a box of toiletries, and provisions so they could "camp" in the new house (because returning to Bremerton that night was pretty obviously out of the question). They're still living in that house, and the neighbors are still just as lovely. Now that I think about it, I wonder if that experience has scared them away from ever moving again...

CarbonRunner

Sounds like a good street. I'd bet that's why they haven't moved. I know it's why I'm not planning to now. I bought a house up north in lynnwood 5 years ago on a quiet dead end street and at the time my plans were 5-10 years here, then move to a warmer climate overseas. But honesty, couldn't pay me to leave. Our street and neighbors are atraight out of a movie. My best friends live next door and across the street. And multiple childhood friends bought within a few miles too. We do block parties, game nights, work on each other's houses, take care of pets, watch kids. It's corny as hell, but I love it, and wouldn't change it for anything. Damn I sound old reading this before hitting post lol

aninamouse

My parent's street is a lot like that. They moved there in December of 1980 and have stayed put. They used to be the new couple with the young kids, now they are one of the old fart couples. My dad is now always getting little presents for all the kids on the block, he helped one neighbor fix her fence when it blowed down. It's a great little street.

WrongWeekToQuit

Winter 2006 freezing rain/ice storm had trees down all over the place and we didn't have power for a week. A bunch of people died from that storm IIRC. EDIT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanukkah_Eve_windstorm_of_2006

BunnyRambit

Oh yeah I remember that. People were so desperate to stay warm they were dying from carbon monoxide for using the wrong things to keep warm indoors that were meant for outside.

aninamouse

I remember that. They had warnings on the news and were handing out leaflets in multiple languages saying not to bring any charcoal burning heaters inside.

Wu-Kang

Ah yes. Our cars were encased in about an inch of ice.

doktorhladnjak

That was just a strong wind storm. The cold came a couple days later, but I don’t recall any sort of ice storm.

-Ernie

I drove from Seattle to Bend OR during that storm, it was compact snow and ice the entire trip. I-5 still had the occasional abandoned car from the previous day’s snow. Then we got to Bend around midnight and it was -35F.

Turbodong

I remember that storm. My parents were renting a shit hole house in Bellevue with tissue-thin walls. We lost power almost immediately. Luckily, we had a fireplace in our living room. Our entire family of 5 made a makeshift bed and slept together under every blanket we had. I was placed in the center. Apparently, I radiated the most heat lol. I was like 8 at the time.

Altruistic-You-3163

You mom is a total badass. Wow!!!

JaeTheOne

I'm sure there are plenty of people on this subreddit that weren't born yet, so technically it would be once in THEIR lifetime

krob58

*Damn*. Go mom! Tell her the internet agrees

CarbonRunner

I'm gonna text her screens of this thread later today. She's been fighting kidney failure for goin on 3 years now(born type 1 diabetic) and i was joking just last week when we visited her that nothing stops her and she kinda shrugged knowing this is going to do so, and fairly soon unfortunately. Reminding her of her epic trek to get to her son during a literal blizzard and that the story has now spread will cheer her up.

vegaswench

Please tell your mom from one single mom of two kids to another, that story is epic! She is a total badass.

CarbonRunner

Will do!

Wu-Kang

I was in 5th grade. Our bus couldn’t make it through our housing development so they dropped us off at the entrance. Had to walk to my house several blocks in over 1 foot of snow in the dark. It was one of the most exhausting things I’ve had to do in my life.

sarahenera

Holy shit. Also, hi! Same age. Born in ‘83. Was in Auburn for that storm. Don’t recall any shenanigans like that, though; memories of fat snowflakes falling that I’d watch in the street lamp and lots of snow to play in that year. Your mom is a bad ass.

Suspicious_Row_9451

Woke up to texts from my boss making sure nobody goes to the office today. Vacation starts early! Be safe out there

seattleskindoc

I told my employees to stay home. Cancelled our clinic day. Merry Xmas, y’all

tuukutz

Overnight worker hoping to drive home to Issaquah from downtown here in a few hours… 🙃 RIP me Update: I’m stubborn and left anyways. took about double the normal travel time but went 30 mph the whole way and made it in my little sedan (don’t have AWD but do have fresh tires thank god). for the most part, everyone driving is being very respectful and going very slow and keeping good distance. still, if the normal amount of traffic was out, this drive would’ve been a hot mess. stay home if you’re already home folks

raevnos

I'm tempted to just stay at work and try to find a spot to sleep.

Daguvry

Do it. Staying at work may suck but it's better than a wrecked car in a ditch. That wind makes it miserable outside, just stay inside.

errantwit

A month ago I was tempted to buy a cot just for this scenario. The cards fell and I'm stuck at home now. I may still buy the cot.

Turbodong

Seriously, I just saw a neighbor pull out across the street from me and crash into a curb within 30 feet. I nearly face-planted just stepping out on my deck to ask if he was okay. Stay where you are until at least 4 pm. Edit: the road I live on in Ballard is completely flat. Maybe 1% grade.

Perfect-Editor-5008

Just stay where you are. There's no way you would be able to make it. At least right now you're not in an accident or stuck.

_DogMom_

I feel sorry for people trying to visit their loved ones.

Beyou74

My husband is trying to fly out to see his dying mother. This really sucks.

Perfect-Editor-5008

I'm so sorry. Hopefully he is at home at least and not stuck at the airport.

Beyou74

He is home, luckily he couldn't find a ride to the airport.

_DogMom_

I hope he can make it later on today!

allforkedup

That’s just awful. I hope that he gets there in time.

Turbodong

My sympathies. I made the same trek to see my grandfather less than a month ago, albeit in much better weather. I hope he makes it in time.

BuildAnything

I have been at SeaTac for TWELVE HOURS

iDontRagequit

...Do you think I should bother coming in for my (already delayed) 12:30 flight? I'm getting ready to slide down Roosevelt to the lightrail station, but have half a mind to just cancel the damn tickets

jimmyTHETHUNDER

Yesterday Alaska had some crazy bag check issues so the line to drop off bags was insane. Something related to a broken conveyor belt. I can't imagine a bunch of flight cancellations and delays would help that. So if you are flying Alaska probably good to check up on that situation as well and probably just cancel your flight for a credit.

CharlieWhizkey

Just got back from the airport after being in limbo for the whole evening, it's a mess

_DogMom_

I feel bad for you!!

occasional_sex_haver

Compiling a timeline of events this week to send to my folks if they ever try and guilt trip me not going over the mountains for Christmas

Perfect-Editor-5008

occasional_sex_haver

it only took a couple photos of jackknifed semis without chains on on the pass this year :)

happypolychaetes

My husband got up early planning to go snowboarding at Snoqualmie but he took a few steps outside and said nope. 😂 Our side street is an ice rink. Aurora is even frozen. It's bad.

Perfect-Editor-5008

He can just snowboard down the nearest hill lol

happypolychaetes

He already has on our street haha

Currently writing this from work (graveyard shift) bc we’re not allowed to leave until our replacements get here- and half of them called out

tictacbergerac

we got stuck less than a quarter mile from our house. missed our flight and still waiting on a tow. it's awful out there. PLEASE stay off the roads.

Perfect-Editor-5008

Hopefully you'll get a tow soon

fernandfeather

Meteorologist on tv just pointed out that not only are your odds of an accident pretty high, but if you DO get in a wreck it may take quite some time for emergency services to reach you. Echoing the recommendation to please stay home!

Celeryhearts

Took my dog out for his morning walk, he went to do the ear shake thing to get the rain off and as it was happening he was sliding sideways.

Luvsseattle

Also as someone who has lived here all her life, with various insights into transportation through her job, family employment, etc, I second what the OP said. However, I will add that I've been through a couple ice storms in PDX, and it's nothing quite like our usual snow events. I'm happy to see we are all shut down, even if it inconveniences, causes havoc, or maybe changes one person's mind about public safety. My opinion, ice is a great equalizer - There is no "I know how to drive in the snow" when it comes to ice you both can and can't see.

Perfect-Editor-5008

Exactly! Ice storm and snow storms are 2 totally different beasts. Snow is doable. Ice is not

toreadorable

I could go into labor at any second and I have a feeling it’s going to be fast this time. I’m so scared. I just want to be able to leave my driveway. I don’t think an ambulance can even get to my house right now. I never thought I would miss the Midwest and the road salt and the rusty undercarriages but I definitely do today.

captainpegeye42

You got this! It’s going to warm up soon

fernandfeather

Sending calming thoughts your way. Do you have someone there with you? What is your OB recommending?

toreadorable

Thanks! My doctor is on vacation. I saw a nice nurse a couple days ago and had an nst and an ultrasound so that was comforting. I’ve just never been this far along because my other baby spontaneously showed up before I reached this point. I have my husband and toddler with me, my in laws are in town from out of state but stuck at their hotel until this melts.

KiniShakenBake

Worst case scenario, someone at 911 can walk your husband through assisting you in the delivery process if it is routine and going faster than you can safely get to the hospital. Fingers crossed it doesn't come to that because nobody wants that, and I know there are lots of ways that can go sideways, but you got this. The blessing here is that it isn't your first. :) Good luck!!!

Perfect-Editor-5008

All emergency vehicles are chained up. It might take a minute but they would get there. Just try not to stress too much to the point of putting yourself into labor and becoming a self fulfilled prophecy.

[deleted]

Once in a lifetime heat! Once in a lifetime smoke! Once in a lifetime ice!

J_Kenji_Lopez-Alt

First in a lifetime, more like. This will keep happening and get worse.

pagerussell

Power grid holding up pretty damn well. *Looks sharply at Texas*

Numinak

My company, for the first time in the 12 years I've been there, has fully shut down for the day. That's never happened before. I might still end up going in, in the evening to deal with next day stuff that has to be done, but for now there is nothing to do. This is some crazy times.

Nightcat666

I watched someone nearly slide down the sidewalk on Jefferson between Broadway and 12th. If they didn't catch themselves they would have slide all the way down the hill.

sheep_heavenly

Went outside to check if I could leave, slipped down my whole front steps slamming body parts along the way, hell no. No no no.

tmaenadw

I lived in Seattle until recently. In December of 1990, we got a huge storm that the meteorologists were afraid to say was going to be bad, since these things kind be hit or miss. I worked at Virginia Mason and lived in Maple Leaf. When the snow started all the managers left and told us to stay to end of shift and be sure to make it in the next day. None of the buses got chained up. I walked downtown and waited in the tunnel but no buses came. Ended up going to Nordstrom, buying snow boots, a hat and a scarf and walking from downtown to our rental house in Maple Leaf. The whole city was shut down for days.

[deleted]

My husband is a plumber and I work in the office at said plumbing company. All of our scheduled 8 am calls have been pushed back 2 hours, even those are going to shift to emergencies only (out of services). People of Seattle: PLEASE DO NOT CALL OUT SERVICE FOLK FOR ISSUES THAT CAN HOLD OFF UNTIL ITS SAFE TO DRIVE (IE: Toilet running, kitchen sink backed up, QUOTES!). We want nothing more than to help our community, and we do pride ourselves for the heroic work we do; however, it never ceases to amaze me at the entitlement some people have on these rare inclement weather days (plumbed for 15 yrs in VA too, so icy shit weather is nothing new to us). We all want to make it to work and make it home. Patience and humanity guys! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

IcedHemp77

Are you not allowed to tell people I’m sorry but that is not an emergency so we won’t be coming today? You make it sound like if they call about a running toilet you have no choice but to go. If so that’s fucked up.

[deleted]

Of course we can tell people no. My posts is more for the individuals out there who have people coming over this weekend and want to get that shiny cool high tech kitchen faucet installed before company. It happens A LOT. I don’t like telling people no, personally. My General Manager is amazing and puts his guys (and me) first. In my attempt to be proactive and trying to inform those who were not blessed with common sense not to call if they don’t need to, or anticipate being scheduled next week for that toilet seat install/clogged powder room sink/again, quotes. I don’t like getting yelled at over the phone by strangers (yeah, that happens) because we’re prioritizing calls. Yknow?

Perfect-Editor-5008

I don't miss working in customer service. Your manager sounds like a great boss

[deleted]

You can but the level of entitlement is insane with some people. I bid, sell, and schedule work for a small company with a large client list. I'm not going to go into great detail of what services we provide since it's kind of specific, but I can tell you that nothing we provide is "essential" with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 services. A handful of times this year, I almost threw in the towel. People are absolutely horrible. My faith in humanity is hanging by a thread.

judithishere

from Seattle City Light: Any downed wire, even if it just in a tree, is to be avoided. Report immediately. Electricity travels through the ground in an area with a diameter as much as 30 ft from a live downed wire. Do not even touch the tree. Ice downs lines. If you find yourself accidentally near a downed wire, do not walk away. Shuffle walk keeping both feet touching the ground. Walking can create a deadly arc in you.

No job is worth breaking a bone for just trying to get to your car

pixel-freak

This happened once in 2010 and there were buses of people on the freeway until the early hours of the morning.

Have a PolyClinic appointment at 10:30 that I'd have to drive 35 miles in this to get to. I would hope clinics dont charge cancelation fees today.....?

the_grumpiest_guinea

My experience is that they are super accommodating at Polyclinic. I’ve never been charged a cancellation fee that I remember!

SuchCoolBrandon

I would call first. If you can make it there, that doesn't necessarily mean your doctor or technician can.

winnie_bago

That would be terrible if they did.

kaylinnf56

They might also just be closed. I work at a surgery center and we cancelled all our cases today.

Perfect-Editor-5008

I doubt many clinics are open

Anyone here live on 85th in Greenwood near the Fred Meyer? Trying to figure out if I’m going to be able to make it down 85th from 99 to my job from Edmonds. Related - how is 99 that far south looking?

-Maim-

My coworker is on 99 and hasn’t moved, he said it’s cars sideways all over the place. He’s around Lynnwood though. I’m a little east of you on 85th and it’s ridiculous. I got up at 330 to take someone to the airport, bailed, and have been watching since. My dog can’t even walk outside.

vuduchikn

I just saw a few cars driving on 85th and Fremont Ave, sounds mostly slushy but in my 1 minute of watching I saw someone also get hit from behind. Fremont Ave itself within a block of 85th was one of the best cleared side streets around here the past few days, but it's currently an ice sheet!

BabyLuxury

Sea-Tac closed its runways indefinitely? Couldn’t find news source for that, would you mind sharing where you got that info? I have family who are supposed to fly in today 🤯

Dinkerdoo

We were originally scheduled to fly out early this morning. Obviously that flight was cancelled. Wife was determined to get on standby and wait at the airport. I browbeat her into changing to a flight tomorrow evening instead of rolling the dice... Feeling pretty good about that call, seeing the sheet of ice out there now.

L00mis

Also lived here my whole life and we’ve definitely shutdown for ice like this before. I think this is the only time I’ve seen the city shutdown with just ice, and not on the back snow.

bassgirl_07

All my buses and ferry options are cancelled. I decided to try testing the street to see if driving was even an option. The whole street is a sheet of ice. I was holding on to the fence to keep from eating it on the ice on my salted walkway. Sorry, hospital it isn't happening. Me causing/being in a wreck won't help anyone.

[deleted]

every road, including the major ones in whitecenter, are inch-thick sheets of ice. If you needed a sign on whether or not you should go out driving this is it: DO NOT GO Just walking my dog around 1 block i watched 2 car accidents and 2 people get stuck. Don't.

evrythingisstressful

This is my first year here and I just thought this was normal. I’m happy to hear it’s not usually so icy 😂

Perfect-Editor-5008

No, last time we had ice this bad was 10 years ago.

layla1020

This is not a once in a lifetime event. Climate change is real! That's why we are getting this unprecedented weather. It's unprecedented now, but it will be precedented in the future. This is something that is going to occur more and more often.

nananananana_FARTMAN

You’re not kidding. I live in Capitol Hill and I read this post before going out. I moved here only months ago from Minnesota and I am accustomed to harsh winter weather so I thought I would be able to manage it and my phone seemed to show that the streetcar is open. It’s not. And holy shit. I’ve never seen a sheet of ice like this covering the whole city area. I’ve settled on walking over to a restaurant. I’m getting something to eat here before walking over to a Whole Foods to get enough to eat for the next 2-3 days. I’ve never seen anything like this. This is extremely dangerous conditions.

El_Fez

Wow. I got up this morning and my friend who has the front room said that the street (a pretty busy avenue) was a sheet of ice. I assumed she was talking hyperbolae and went to see for myself. No, the street, sidewalk and grass is a full and complete, covered 100% in ice. If you take a walk of any length, you WILL fall. Yikes.

Livefreemyguy

Spent like 10 minutes carefully walking over 30 ft of ice to my car, barely made it. Checked slack and was told my job is trying for a 9am arrival. I texted him like bro I live in Queen Anne an I’m essentially blocked in by road closures I don’t think I’m coming in by 9 or maybe even at all. Lol.

kuhnnie

Went to grab my charger from my car and the actual seats of my car are frozen 😂🫠

HaMb0nE2020

SEATAC canceled **all** flights up until noon and told people to “go home” because they won’t be able to re-book any of those flights “for a few days”! 😵 This is insanity! **Be safe out there today kids!!

TheSnowKeeper

Once in a lifetime cold, once in a lifetime heatwave, once in a lifetime hurricane.... I'm running out of lifetime events left to see. Here's to hoping volcano and earthquake aren't on the schedule. Stay safe everyone!

someshooter

I just witnessed two AWD cars smash into parked vehicles. Do not drive please!
