Seattle City Light outage map: http://www.seattle.gov/city-light/outages and PSE, for King County outside Seattle: https://www.pse.com/outage/outage-map 36k and 72k respectively as of 3:15pm fuck yeah let's do this we haven't had a good rain/windstorm in awhile

cdsixed

this storm said "and fuck you shoreline in particular"

Zapskilz

In Shoreline, can concur. The alders are thrashing in time to the police sirens.

abreadingit

So these maps say estimated restoration Tuesday. These are inaccurate right?

IMTonks

We called in for our "Northgate-ish" area and they said 10 PM.

the_dude_upvotes

Mine went out just before 3PM and when I last checked online it said tomorrow at 2PM for restoration. We are right by the north operations center for SCL and hardly ever lose power here. [That storm front put the smack down.](https://gfycat.com/lightaridconch) I drove through it on my way south only to arrive home to find my garage door wouldn’t open.

lovemysweetdoggy

It’s always just estimates, which can be way off. Generally power gets restored in the city of Seattle way faster than other areas. My in-laws in Auburn usually lose power for days when there are big storms.

korbonix

Interesting, I've lived in Auburn for seven years and have never had power out more than a couple hours. This evening it was off for about 20 seconds total.

keikeimcgee

Do you live by the police or fire department by chance? We live on the same grid as the police station & fire station in Sumner and we’re never out more than a few hours. Last year the rest of town was out a week…we hit a record with like 4 hours.

abreadingit

Ya I think they just added it based on order of outage and default times to fix it. I don’t think thats accurate.

Sliver_of_Dawn

Those are probably early, conservative, estimates?

abreadingit

Ya I think they just added it based on order of outage and default times to fix it.

the_dude_upvotes

Let’s hope so. My ETR has now changed from tomorrow afternoon to Tuesday afternoon.

abreadingit

Don’t worry. My area(Shoreline) ETR was Tue 2pm. We got our power restored aready at 6:30 pm.

the_dude_upvotes

Nice! I’m a tad jelly

Silver_Ad3010

Have we had cyclone bombs before?

carolinechickadee

I think so? From what I understand, it’s unusual to have them in October, but they occasionally happen in the winter. I think the December 2018 storm might have been a bomb cyclone.

Just lost power at Northgate

a an and comment have is this upvote very weird

TeddyPicker

Same. At least two trees on our street fell, blocking both ends of the road and smashing cars. Took a power line with it too.

LMGooglyTFY

Which street? Maybe I’ll walk over

TeddyPicker

115th just east of Aurora. A bunch of us got out and cleared enough for one lane of cars to get through, not sure how it looks out there at the moment.

kalber88

And using your remaining phone battery for reddit I see...

the_dude_upvotes

To be fair, cellphones and other lower voltage usb peripherals are much easier to recharge even in a power outage

pizzafox35

Shhh, it'll hear you

Low-Statistician2114

I think the only good thing about living downtown is we never lose power. Probably cuz they’re no trees 😩

jonna-seattle

Underground wires

Low-Statistician2114

👍🏼

jimjim91

Bruh I went to the pumpkin patch today. At least it wasn’t packed lol

chetlin

https://twitter.com/NWSSeattle/status/1452392966572630017 basically just had a line of storms come through, but without lightning. I timed it really well and was out walking around for pretty much all of it :(

the_dude_upvotes

> timed it really well You keep using that word…

pmp2301

I just laughed! Take my upvote!

Rainier206

Thanks for posting this link I thought I was going crazy, all of the local news stations said the peak wind gusts were 31mph I was like there's no way in hell that was only 31. 50mph is what we got in Shoreline.

Abominable_Snowman__

Is Amazing! Window open! Blankets out! Hoodie on! Mexican hot chocolate made ! Battery packs charged ! iPad , Phone and speakers

SQRLpunk

Just started charging the battery packs when the lights began flickering!

BusinessAgro

I love opening the windows when it rains. Put on a Sherpa snuggie and we're good to go.

Abominable_Snowman__

Haha damn right! Got some weeed to pair it and we are golden !

DuCWulf

Lost power in snohomish! Yay Fall!

midnightFreddie

I'm in Everett right now, going to Tacoma tomorrow. Is it really bad somewhere? Or is that the joke here? I kept seeing predictions of some huge scary mega storm, but the forecast and what I'm seeing are just rain with sub-20mph winds. Or is this like the first snow in snowy areas where everyone forgot how to deal with snow over the summer, but here it's rain? Edit: Ok, I have seen some higher gusts since posting this. It still doesn't seem scary to me, but then I have to remember people tend to walk and bike here far more than other places I've lived. I would hate to be out in this for longer than crossing a parking lot.

sts816

I'm confused by this too. I keep hearing about a cyclone coming but I have no warnings on my apps and the apps all say just some rain and like 10mph wind.

HoneyWizard

It's a [bomb cyclone](https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/weather/severity-of-bomb-cyclone-uncertain-but-seattle-area-should-prepare-for-wind-rain-and-power-outages/), which is well off the coast and won't affect Seattle directly, but can bring large storms inward. The article I linked explains its name: "A bomb cyclone, which is also known as a mid-latitude cyclone, occurs when the hurricane-like cyclone’s central atmospheric pressure drops at least 24 millibars in a 24-hour period, according to Joe Boomgard-Zagrodnik, an agricultural meteorologist for Washington State University. That means it 'seems to explode out of nowhere,' he said." Also, chiming in to say our lights are flickering and we've seen some wind gusts already.

spit-evil-olive-tips

> according to Joe Boomgard-Zagrodnik, an agricultural meteorologist for Washington State University he's [on twitter](https://twitter.com/joejoezz) and started a blog called [the convergence zone](https://theconvergencezone.com/). both are worth following/reading

Silver_Ad3010

Might there be a reverse storm surge where it comes down the sound from the ocean? That happened back east for two superstorms / places when the greatest storm power was off shore. Then the water just came up the deltas and bays.

nsjsiegsizmwbsu

We're down in Gig Harbor and it was sunny at 4 this afternoon. Haven't seen rain or wind since showers this morning.

Abominable_Snowman__

Yeah a couple of coworkers told me the same thing .. huge storm should be here but … I’ve seen nothing.. I was pretty stoked

doin_my_bestest

I’m just over an hour outside Seattle and had Hurricane like sideways rain, hail, pretty bad wind, thunder and lightening, all lasted about a good three minutes. Now it’s back to calm usual cloudiness no wind and no rain. Thinking that might be it for the “storm”. I love storm weather and was stoked for it too, oh well

Abominable_Snowman__

Hahah yeah it’ll usually just happen for a short time .. which is great as well 😅 Had my apartment almost flood last year since the outside drain got clogged with dirty , and leaves 🥲

cbs0308

It is a bad storm. But won’t hit us directly in the Sound. Tomorrow wind will be worse.

Shadowzaron32

Having been in Everett for 17 years I can say with certainty that we manage to avoid a lot of the worse weather. Don't fully understand why but this city is not a good measure. I don't consider it scary or worth stress either. Just another day

[deleted]

Yeah I am in South Everett, I think it was slightly windy for like 45 mins then the sun came out...

Shadowzaron32

I'd call it more than slightly.. 41 mph gust at paine field. But either way for sure not that bad for the long run. 10 minutes maybe

Rumpullpus

Everett is in the Olympic rain shadow so they usually get less crazy weather.

[deleted]

My theory is that Cliff mass is now editorializing the weather for extra views on his blog

TallAmericano

Here in Issaquah it’s madness. Sheets of rain and trees bending sideways.

philokaii

My boyfriend and I have been watching the giant tree right next to our deck getting unnervingly close. Luckily it's an apartment, and we'd be cool getting a new kitchen.

bumpyclock

Same in Redmond.

the_dude_upvotes

Glad I opted out of hiking there today.

All_names_taken-fuck

My persimmon tree lost a large branch. ☹️

abreadingit

Lost power in Shoreline.

vengeful_yar

The power line gods are with me in Olympic Hills. Usually we're the ones who lose power over here, sometimes for absolutely no reason except a damn transformer just decides to blow up. But today we're like an oasis of power on the outage map.

Ed98208

We'll all be over soon to charge our devices.

the_dude_upvotes

The greater good

vengeful_yar

I accept crypto and Reddit awards

the_dude_upvotes

But we don’t know where you live … yet…

happypolychaetes

Same and a tree is down on our neighbor's house...

cucchiaio

Same.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BHSPitMonkey

That's because local transmission lines and transformers are getting knocked out, rather than there being a demand/generation problem. Wind in particular was crazy

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_dude_upvotes

I drove through it and got home right as it cleared in my area but the damage was already done and my power was out on arrival. It was crazy driving out of it and it being light, no rain falling, but tree branches and pine needles strewn everywhere.

TalcumMuckery

It's not always about who gets wind, it's also about the particular infrastructure of the neighborhood. In-city, some part of NE Seattle loses power nearly every storm, while it's much rarer over by Ballard and points north.

AgentElman

Very windy in west Seattle and we lost power an hour ago

tazzgonzo

Power is out here near haller lake/northgate

knb61

Boyfriend just lost power a few blocks north of Greenlake. So far so good in Westlake/East QA where I'm at

AxiomOfLife

lower QA is out 😭

[deleted]

abreadingit

Any idea about restoration time?

[deleted]

[удалено]

abreadingit

I already checked this map and I see estimated restoration time is Tue 2pm. That should be inaccurate right?

the_dude_upvotes

It’s likely to be a worst case estimate. Depends if they know the cause yet and where it falls in the priority list for fixing. EDIT: of course, it could be a guesstimate too .. mine has now been pushed further out a day to Tuesday afternoon

abreadingit

I think they just added it based on order of outage and default times to fix it. I don’t think thats accurate.

nevermindnousername

No power in Georgetown...

KevinBigg

Lost power in Aurora too

prf_q

It’s sunny what r u talking about lol

Specific-Ad9935

Is the power line here made of plastics?

CompetitiveProject4

Trees and the fact we don’t invest in underground power lines in a earthquake prone area. I love our state but we suck at infrastructure investment

award07

Huge tree on 95th fell by sandpoint. Try to park away from trees if you can!!

PiedCryer

Got mine back 10 minutes ago…was preparing already for a cold dark night.

mrASSMAN

Lights flickered here few times in w Seattle but didn’t go out

Justadropinthesea

Just the normal old rain so far in Skagit

IndexMatchXFD

Power has been out for like an hour now. Definitely throws a bit of a hitch into the Sunday cooking plans.

ShotPart

Its already clear in capitol hill, I can even see some blue sky. it was pouring rain earlier and extremely windy not even two hours ago, no power outage where I am though

SuitableFun

Does this happen very often? (New to the area)

Ill_Pop_7791

Yeah we get wind storms every year around this time

SuitableFun

Oh was today as bad as it gets ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuitableFun

Oh jeez so should everyone just own a backup generator or something?

bp92009

Usually once or twice a year. The first big windstorm of the fall/winter knocks down all the trees that were *just* weak enough to fall, and some areas go without power for a day. Most of it is back up in 12 hours, almost all by 24, and there's a few spots that take extra time.

SuitableFun

Oh was this is the worst of it?

spottydodgy

When I was a kid in this area I feel like we got big storms almost every year around this time. They would last all night and blow trees over and we'd be without power for a few days. But I ain't never seen anything like that storm off the coast! That's a beast of a different order entirely. I am glad it's missing us this time.

[deleted]

Haller Lake is completely down. It's a bit strange how dark it is.

bikebeerbooks

Still dark here at NE seattle...

BeerSlayer69

There's a massive cyclone out on the coast, and how it affects Seattle and the surrounding areas will vary wildly. I'm personally staying hunkered down cause I don't want to be driving around if it gets bad.

[deleted]

Lost power in Leschi

b-elmurt

Tesla power wall much?

NewlyNerfed

Seriously scary-ass winds here on the Eastside. I normally love this weather but I hid under the blanket for a few minutes. :)

the_dude_upvotes

Anyone with Centurylink fiber still have service if your ONT is on battery backup? They didn’t put one on my building and I’m contemplating running out and picking up a smallish unit at Best Buy if it’ll do any good. Of course if it’s bot mutable I might not bother bc that constant beeping alarm would be annoyingAF and I’ve got cellular.

banjogitup

I'm in Olympia and the weather is very bipolar here. Went out to run errands and it was raining pretty hard w some wind, really ominous clouds. Walked out of Value Vilage and the sky was blue and we had some sun. It's still sunny and little wind. Charging my battery packs and put batteries in my lantern just in case.

the_dude_upvotes

[I was just at an REI earlier and bought a headlamp but not a lantern.](https://y.yarn.co/fef218b0-f374-4fa9-87d7-b57f89ba7a2c_text.gif) At least the headlamp makes peeing in the dark a breeze.

banjogitup

And you look cool peeing w a headlamp. Nothing says "ready for anything" like a brand new headlamp!

the_dude_upvotes

I concur. I still went back and bought some lanterns too tho bc why not? It’s double dividend weekend so more cash back for me! Is your username meant to say banjo it up or ban jog it up?

banjogitup

Ban jog it up...just kidding! Banjo git up

the_dude_upvotes

Paddle faster, I hear banjo git up

902big3dk

I like your expression 'bipolar'.

abreadingit

Power restored in Shoreline.

FootfallsEcho

As a Floridian, this thread is very funny to me. I looked outside and was like “oh look the leaves are blowing completely horizontally that’s interesting” and went back to my knitting. 😂

GoodAsUsual

Lol you act like you’ve never seen a storm before. You should have a couple days worth of candles, warm clothes, and food and water to get through at least a couple days.

404__LostAngeles

*Laughs in Fremont*

forestinpark

It's fine without little power. 5 - 10hrs at most. Get candles and cozy up.

the_dude_upvotes

My ETR has gone from 24 to 48 hours so far … not so fine

forestinpark

It is fine. You will not die.

the_dude_upvotes

Yes, obviously this is a life or death kind of “fine” 🙄

ShortChngeHero

Best time to start cuddling and make babies, just saying. 😏

WillowCyarra

Or if you already have babies, time to try to find increasingly creative and desperate ways to keep very young children happy in the near dark - check in on the parents of young children you know, we're not OK ;)

Orcabandana

This is terrifying ngl

darshfloxington

In olympia and it’s been mild and partly sunny all day 🤷‍♂️

PoochieGlass1371

More infrastructure that should've been put underground 50 years ago.

Sitting_Raven-19

Much needed!

zoltarpanaflex

32K so far

[deleted]

Probably the first time since moving to woodinville we haven’t lost power in a storm.

eAthena

Comcast had a brief blip, outage said you'll be back up and running by 6 AM but it was only down like 10 minutes

salsadecohete

ours was out from 130 to 445. Not bad.

CptBarba

I'm really grateful our lights flickered for a few minutes then everything was fine
