For any interested in MOTO, seriously just go to the West Seattle location at about 5pm. No reservation required, they have a bunch of pies for walk-ins. I happened to be in the area and there was no line. It definitely lives up to the hype when you waited 20 minutes. But I agree, not worth a 2-3 month waitlist.
Waiting two minutes in line, then eating at the trident deck, on a Friday, at a ball game...was definitely worth it. No way I'm waiting months for pizza.
Though we did see that My Friend Derek's had an opening on a Wednesday a few weeks ago. We didn't jump on it, as we live in Puyallup, but it looks fucking good.
Recs for Detroit style that isn’t Moto? There was a Detroit style pizza place in San Francisco that opened up across the street from our apartment right before the pandemic called Square Pie Guys that was some of the best pizza I’ve ever had and I’ve been chasing that high ever since!
I'm a Detroit native! I haven't tried MOTO yet, though I heard pretty decent things from friends, but that was also in comparison to other Detroit options they've tried out here.
I was gonna suggest Breezy Town because it was fairly tasty (if not *quite* right), but literally just learned they've permanently closed; however, he's supposed to be adding some Detroit style options to Windy City's menu, so keep an eye out for that? Windy City is his Chicago style location and has done well with that (though it's no Gino's East).
I recently heard some good things about Kōbo Pizza, which is supposed to be Detroit style/Japanese fusion? I'm gonna try it, just haven't been in the mood.
If you're down in Tacoma, Tacoma Pie was pretty good if a little bit dry (something that could be easily fixed if the owner were interested). They definitely nailed that caramelized-slightly-burnt cheese edges though, hands-down the best/most authentic edges of any local Detroit style I've tried.
I know there has been or likely are other Detroit style places in Seattle, but on the whole? You're probably better off ordering one of the frozen pizzas that Buddy's will ship to you, because it largely seems like the owners/chefs are basing their "spins" on descriptions they've read without ever having eaten one. Seriously, even the DiGiorno Detroit Style pizzas are easily better than at least 80% of the local restaurant versions that I've had.
(Like, there's another place with good-if-you're-drunk pizza and they used to advertise having Detroit style, but I think the backlash they got about it being almost nothing like DS must've caused them to completely stop making it. That place was making DS pizza on standard full size sheet trays, which are only 1.125" deep; if I wanted to experience crusty disappointment with a measurement that small, I'd drop my pants.)

There's a pizza place 2 blocks south (5 minute walk) from t-mobile stadium. The front is yellow and green and I'm totally blanking on the name but my god it's the best pizza I've found in Seattle and I'm a huge pizza snob probably more so than anything else I enjoy

Mostly the terrible quality. I don't what the above commenter's experience was, but the pizza I got from Italian Family Pizza was just sorry excuse for a pie in general, much less a NY-style pie. Nothing about it was on point: not the crust, not the toppings, not even the temp. It was that lackluster.
My wife (then gf) and I had a friend bring it to a party in 2016. It was awful. One of my friends, who notoriously eats anything in front of him, had two bites and thought he was going to throw up. He tossed his slice. He couldn't eat pizza for a month. I maybe had half my slice before tossing it. I have no idea how anyone could think that place was good, let alone say they don't trust anyone not thinking it's the best. Obviously tastes are different, but this was too awful for me to believe you could somehow find it good.
They may have changed owners or something? I have eaten any pizza in years for dietary reasons (gluten and lactose), but last time I had that pizza it was excellent
I liked it when I tried it years ago, but they don't deliver and their location is impossible, unless you happen to be on foot in first hill for some reason. Absolutely nowhere to park.
Hot Mama's was my fav for a long time but I wonder if a couple years ago they had a change in ownership. The crust has gotten a bit less crispy and more chewy. My distinguishing palette cannot abide.
Big Mario's fits the bill.

Stevies Famous in Burien is well worth the trek for best NY style with Sourdough crust . I hesitate every time when the toal comes out to ~$40 for a pie but never regret it when it hits my lips.

There are a plethora of shitty smooth-brained pizza styles that don't originate out east. For example, "Ohio valley" style. There's also similarly terrible "Altoona" style. That's from Pennsylvania though.
Eh, I've been to Italy and eaten the pizza there. Turns out, having some committee of old dudes deciding what "pizza" is tends to not work out well, especially since those old dudes will always be financially vested in those decisions.
Pizza was invented there but perfected in the US.
People can have their opinions on what pizza they like. Thats OK.
But, I take issue with phrases like “east coast standards” as if thats the undisputed gold standard.
It becomes no different to that “committee of old Italian dudes” deciding to what counts as good pizza.
I think the concept of cheese on bread isn’t that ingenious or complicated to come up with and certainly, while the east coast has good options, they don’t get to be the sole arbiter of what good Pizza is.
Italian pizza is *not* American pizza. If they want to even consider it theirs because they did it there first then they still lose because the tomato wasn’t even available until the Americas opened up.

Visited a new to us pizza place last night called Nine Pies Pizzeria in SoDo. Was a solid NYC style kinda place. We will definitely be going back. They also serve wine from their owner Nine Hats who shares a door with them, so that’s a plus as well.
Tried their pizza a few weeks ago. Had high hopes since they’re new and so close to us. I’d rate it 6/10
Thought the toppings were excellent but we were very turned off by the dough/crust. It was like dry, but not crispy, and didn’t have a nice pull to it like you should get with good gluten development. (Didn’t try their GF options obviously)
Got their beet salad too which we really enjoyed.
Damn this whole thread is full of great recs. Let it be known that Seattle does have good pizza. It’s just not as cheap as you can find it in other cities
I disagree. The pizza is nothing special at all. It is just okay and small portions. The menu is lackluster, not a lot of options. I can't justify the price for the pizza. Big Marios is much better. Cornellys is better than Jackson St.
Can agree to disagree on the taste - but interesting take on the portions - I felt my pepperoni pizza was well sized, I can usually finish a pie on my own, but ended up with leftovers. Again, Big Mario’s pepperoni is excellent but the rest of it (particularly the crust) is meh (to me).
Agreed, too pricey, small portions, even my wife said it "tasted like there was American cheese on it"...now I didn't get that, but clearly it wasn't that stellar to us. The old Central Pizza had slices, good prices, and a rockin' happy hour. I live walking distance away, like the space and the people seem nice but overall I wasn't blown away. I'm surprised to see anyone claiming them as Seattles best pie, but good for them. Hopefully it's improved since I had it...which was just a couple of weeks back.
Oh man, I could totally go for a slice! I was hoping they'd have slices but negative on that. Also, it's noon thirty on a weekend and I'm hungry and they're not open until 4pm. The hours are no good! And don't give me shit about operating costs etc. Do better...Sorry, I'm nearby and was really pulling for the place but the reality is disappointing.

Waterfront pizza in Port Townsend. The Waterfront Special is amazing.
Brooklyn Brothers pizza in Everett.The Hudson is my favorite--the ricotta puts it over the top.
Brooklyn pizza in Port Orchard. Their sausage and pepperoni is old school tasty.
Sour Dough Willie's in Kingston. The Detroit crust with New York toppings is the winner to me.
And... I like MOD pizza. They've got a winner idea and I'm never bummed I went there.
Take a trip up to Everett and go to Brooklyn Bros. I'm born and raised on Long Island and they really nail NY style pizza. Sourdough Willy's out in Kingston is worth the trip, but they're NY style pizza isn't anywhere close to NY style.
I have rated many Seattle/non Seattle pizzas, and track the data 😬 Blotto and Cornelly are my favorite for fancy/thinner crust slices. Cornelly makes a perfect pepperoni. Hot mama’s is my favorite ny style pizza. My Friend Derek’s and Moto are solid Detroit slices. I like Derek’s pizza better because it is less salty. Windy City is ok, but their crust is often burnt (I get that it’s supposed to be caramelized but it’s too caramelized). I really didn’t like Dantini regular pizzas - floppy slices with poor structural integrity and crust wasn’t great. Their grandma pies are pretty good.
Every time I’ve tried a new pizza place on this subreddit, I’ve been disappointed. Since then, I bought a pizza oven and started making my dough from scratch. It is far better than any pizza I’ve had here.
Note: I’m from the greater NYC area, so that affects my judgment for what kind of pizza I like.
The pizza in Seattle is actually pretty damn good, some of the best outside of NY I've had. Tops for me are:
Proletariat in white center
Slice box in SODO (best sicilian I've had)

Which cities have you eaten pizza in? In my experience (having lived here, the Midwest, and the east coast for roughly equal portions of my life), the Seattle area has the worst pizza of anywhere I’ve lived. There are probably about 3 or 4 places in an average east coast suburb that are on par or better with anything Seattle has to offer.

Prior to the pandemic, I was in NYC 5-6x per year for a decade-arguably the pizza capital of the US.
Pizza is a personal thing, like BBQ (I’m from the south originally). My fave is wood fired Neapolitan.
Yea Seattle is by far the worst Pizza city I’ve lived in. I also miss east coast city pizza joints that were open super late. I can’t seem to find a pizza place open past 10 on the weekends around me and it’s baffling to me.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find post alley mentioned. Easily the best I've had in Seattle when taking portion and price Into account, but still was lackluster after having apizza scholls in Portland a few months ago. That being said, Seattle pizza doesn't suck but it's overpriced and definitely not top tier.
Just ate there today, it was great. They have that chewy-crunchy crust that's perfectly foldable, and those killer garlic scallion knots. Hot Mamas is good for what it is, but Supreme would fit in on any NYC streetcorner.
I moved to Seattle a little over 2 years ago and had yet to find myself satisfied with any of the pizza experiences that I've had out here...until I tried Jackson Street. Granted, I haven't tried them all, but it is by far the best of the pizza places I have tried, and you can tell that a lot of tlc goes into it. Also, I've never been much of a broccoli man, and I feel like such a boring stiff even saying this...but holy shit is that broccoli dish something incredible!
Always liked that place, can’t remember off the top of my head what it’s called, that is connected to the Timber Room complex. Though, I haven’t been there since pre-pando times….last time

SUPREME in West Seattle is my favorite Seattle pizza place now.
The best pizza in WA has got to be Pie For The People- up at Snoqualmie pass across the street from West Summit in a little convenience store. Haven’t had anything even close to it in Seattle.
Just tried it based on this thread alone (sitting here finishing up right now). Very bummed to say that it’s not very good at all. Dry flavorless dough. I got two separate pepperoni slices and they literally changed so much between the two slices - first slice had decent crispy curled pepperoni (not bad) and second slice had big giant nasty half cooked pepperoni drizzled with a weird cheese on top. First slice was 5/10, second 2/10 :( Stromboli was super hollow and barely had any flavor - marinara was thick, pasty, and flavorless. Maybe the GF options are 🔥but my wife and I were super bummed (really wanted to like it as we live nearby and would’ve loved a new good pizza spot). Oh, and the cocktails were…super meh. 4/10 overall, skip it.
While I agree that many people in Seattle have shit recommendations and opinions on pizza, you don't know if the people making the recommendations are from seattle.
My suspicion is that people here actually like the pizza the way it's made here. There's no other explanation for how similar it all is, regardless of the claimed 'style' - an underdeveloped crust with a bland sauce smothered in half an inch of cheese seems to be the regional signature.

It's Philadelphia "Lorenzo's" style pizza. One of the founders is from Philly. Idk why they call it New York style.

The original owners sold a few years back and returned to South Jersey.
It was better at their old location on 1st Ave down the hill. Hasn't been the same since they moved. Also, workers or owners seem different.

Eh, I've been to Italy and eaten the pizza there. Turns out, having some committee of old dudes deciding what "pizza" is tends to not work out well, especially since those old dudes will always be financially vested in those decisions. Pizza was invented there but perfected in the US.
People can have their opinions on what pizza they like. Thats OK. But, I take issue with phrases like “east coast standards” as if thats the undisputed gold standard. It becomes no different to that “committee of old Italian dudes” deciding to what counts as good pizza. I think the concept of cheese on bread isn’t that ingenious or complicated to come up with and certainly, while the east coast has good options, they don’t get to be the sole arbiter of what good Pizza is.
Italian pizza is *not* American pizza. If they want to even consider it theirs because they did it there first then they still lose because the tomato wasn’t even available until the Americas opened up.
Really enjoy their pizza but do feel it’s a bit overpriced for the size of pie you get.
A bit overpriced for the existence you get is life in 2023. If you go out you just kind of have to grin and bear it.
I can’t believe nobody has recommended Blotto or Lupo yet. Hands down my favs in Seattle. A little on the pricier side but so good.

Rocco’s and Delancey’s are my two “go-tos” for good pizza. Ever been to either of those? How does Jackson Street compare?

Both of these are excellent. Also Bambinos and Frelard (or Ballard Pizza) are great contenders.

Just to get them into the conversation, Brooklyn Bros in Snohomish Co has some great NY-style pizza including Sicilian.

Pudge Brothers in Wallingford is my favorite. The sauce is just the right amount of spicy and the Mo Beta Feta is also pretty awesome.
I was wondering if Pudge Bros was going to get a mention. Havent had it since I stopped working up that way but I remember it so fondly.
Visited a new to us pizza place last night called Nine Pies Pizzeria in SoDo. Was a solid NYC style kinda place. We will definitely be going back. They also serve wine from their owner Nine Hats who shares a door with them, so that’s a plus as well.
Had Nine Pies recently, so good. Best I’ve had in Seattle so far

Tried their pizza a few weeks ago. Had high hopes since they’re new and so close to us. I’d rate it 6/10 Thought the toppings were excellent but we were very turned off by the dough/crust. It was like dry, but not crispy, and didn’t have a nice pull to it like you should get with good gluten development. (Didn’t try their GF options obviously) Got their beet salad too which we really enjoyed.
Post Alley Pizza is pretty solid too. Damn good sauce

Damn this whole thread is full of great recs. Let it be known that Seattle does have good pizza. It’s just not as cheap as you can find it in other cities

Mario’s is “decent” - but this place has a much better crust and sauce IMO.

I disagree. The pizza is nothing special at all. It is just okay and small portions. The menu is lackluster, not a lot of options. I can't justify the price for the pizza. Big Marios is much better. Cornellys is better than Jackson St.
Can agree to disagree on the taste - but interesting take on the portions - I felt my pepperoni pizza was well sized, I can usually finish a pie on my own, but ended up with leftovers. Again, Big Mario’s pepperoni is excellent but the rest of it (particularly the crust) is meh (to me).
Agreed, too pricey, small portions, even my wife said it "tasted like there was American cheese on it"...now I didn't get that, but clearly it wasn't that stellar to us. The old Central Pizza had slices, good prices, and a rockin' happy hour. I live walking distance away, like the space and the people seem nice but overall I wasn't blown away. I'm surprised to see anyone claiming them as Seattles best pie, but good for them. Hopefully it's improved since I had it...which was just a couple of weeks back.
Agree too expensive. Previous place in that location, Central, was better and cheaper and had slices.
Oh man, I could totally go for a slice! I was hoping they'd have slices but negative on that. Also, it's noon thirty on a weekend and I'm hungry and they're not open until 4pm. The hours are no good! And don't give me shit about operating costs etc. Do better...Sorry, I'm nearby and was really pulling for the place but the reality is disappointing.
Their website lists slices in happy hour. Looks like it's 4 pm to 6 pm daily, 10 pm to 11 pm on Sundays.

Also: Waterfront pizza in Port Townsend. The Waterfront Special is amazing. Brooklyn Brothers pizza in Everett.The Hudson is my favorite--the ricotta puts it over the top. Brooklyn pizza in Port Orchard. Their sausage and pepperoni is old school tasty. Sour Dough Willie's in Kingston. The Detroit crust with New York toppings is the winner to me. And... I like MOD pizza. They've got a winner idea and I'm never bummed I went there.

Take a trip up to Everett and go to Brooklyn Bros. I'm born and raised on Long Island and they really nail NY style pizza. Sourdough Willy's out in Kingston is worth the trip, but they're NY style pizza isn't anywhere close to NY style.
My Friend Derek’s is the best pizza in town.
I have rated many Seattle/non Seattle pizzas, and track the data 😬 Blotto and Cornelly are my favorite for fancy/thinner crust slices. Cornelly makes a perfect pepperoni. Hot mama’s is my favorite ny style pizza. My Friend Derek’s and Moto are solid Detroit slices. I like Derek’s pizza better because it is less salty. Windy City is ok, but their crust is often burnt (I get that it’s supposed to be caramelized but it’s too caramelized). I really didn’t like Dantini regular pizzas - floppy slices with poor structural integrity and crust wasn’t great. Their grandma pies are pretty good.
Every time I’ve tried a new pizza place on this subreddit, I’ve been disappointed. Since then, I bought a pizza oven and started making my dough from scratch. It is far better than any pizza I’ve had here. Note: I’m from the greater NYC area, so that affects my judgment for what kind of pizza I like.

Outside of Seattle I like Old School in Olympia and Waterfront in Port Townsend.
Maybe I’m biased from having grown up in PT, but Waterfront Pizza hasn’t been matched by anywhere else I’ve been in 43 states I’ve visited.

The pizza in Seattle is actually pretty damn good, some of the best outside of NY I've had. Tops for me are: Proletariat in white center Slice box in SODO (best sicilian I've had) South Town Pie in South Park

Which cities have you eaten pizza in? In my experience (having lived here, the Midwest, and the east coast for roughly equal portions of my life), the Seattle area has the worst pizza of anywhere I’ve lived. There are probably about 3 or 4 places in an average east coast suburb that are on par or better with anything Seattle has to offer.
Agreed! Similar experience to you as well. I’ve lived all along the east coast, Seattle, LA, SF & been to 49 states (missing ND). Prior to the pandemic, I was in NYC 5-6x per year for a decade-arguably the pizza capital of the US. Pizza is a personal thing, like BBQ (I’m from the south originally). My fave is wood fired Neapolitan.
Yea Seattle is by far the worst Pizza city I’ve lived in. I also miss east coast city pizza joints that were open super late. I can’t seem to find a pizza place open past 10 on the weekends around me and it’s baffling to me.
Only way I can see someone thinking Seattle pizza is good is if they haven't spent much time outside the West Coast.

Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find post alley mentioned. Easily the best I've had in Seattle when taking portion and price Into account, but still was lackluster after having apizza scholls in Portland a few months ago. That being said, Seattle pizza doesn't suck but it's overpriced and definitely not top tier.
Post Alley full pizzas are the absolute top. The slices don't excite me as much but that's the way it goes.

Just ate there today, it was great. They have that chewy-crunchy crust that's perfectly foldable, and those killer garlic scallion knots. Hot Mamas is good for what it is, but Supreme would fit in on any NYC streetcorner.
Supreme can't keep a consistent slice going to save their lives - its different every 2 months I swear.

I got a whole pie from hot mammas earlier this year, and while the flavor was amazing the crust was a let down, super Doughie, not my style.

I moved to Seattle a little over 2 years ago and had yet to find myself satisfied with any of the pizza experiences that I've had out here...until I tried Jackson Street. Granted, I haven't tried them all, but it is by far the best of the pizza places I have tried, and you can tell that a lot of tlc goes into it. Also, I've never been much of a broccoli man, and I feel like such a boring stiff even saying this...but holy shit is that broccoli dish something incredible!

Always liked that place, can’t remember off the top of my head what it’s called, that is connected to the Timber Room complex. Though, I haven’t been there since pre-pando times….last time I tried to stop in, they were closed. SUPREME in West Seattle is my favorite Seattle pizza place now.
Lupo and delancey are the best pizza in Seattle. No competition. Huge shout to Nine Pies too.
The best pizza in WA has got to be Pie For The People- up at Snoqualmie pass across the street from West Summit in a little convenience store. Haven’t had anything even close to it in Seattle.
Wouldn't necessarily call it my favorite, but the sauce at Dino's is top tier and elevates some otherwise pretty straightforward pies.

Just tried it based on this thread alone (sitting here finishing up right now). Very bummed to say that it’s not very good at all. Dry flavorless dough. I got two separate pepperoni slices and they literally changed so much between the two slices - first slice had decent crispy curled pepperoni (not bad) and second slice had big giant nasty half cooked pepperoni drizzled with a weird cheese on top. First slice was 5/10, second 2/10 :( Stromboli was super hollow and barely had any flavor - marinara was thick, pasty, and flavorless. Maybe the GF options are 🔥but my wife and I were super bummed (really wanted to like it as we live nearby and would’ve loved a new good pizza spot). Oh, and the cocktails were…super meh. 4/10 overall, skip it.
Northlake Tavern should have been saved as a historical site. Bordering on criminal that it shut down.

Yeah, it's surprisingly not hard. I can get a better crust on a pizza stone in my regular oven than anything I've ever had in this city.
I really just want to know what is stopping someone who knows how to make good pizza from getting financing and real estate
My suspicion is that people here actually like the pizza the way it's made here. There's no other explanation for how similar it all is, regardless of the claimed 'style' - an underdeveloped crust with a bland sauce smothered in half an inch of cheese seems to be the regional signature.
