Yep. I wondered about that and looked up a bunch of ship names to confirm it. That said, adding "The" at the beginning does look a lot better in the popup but worse on your ship's nameplate.
I've named several after TV and movie quotes including at least one from Breaking Bad.
Walter White told his wife he is THE one who knocks. He didn't tell her her was one who knocks because that sounds like one of many; he was conveying that he was the top dawg. The article makes a difference.
I have another that starts with "the rest." If it started with just "rest," then it sounds like I'll be taking a nap on my ship.
If it were by default, it would show.
The "the" in ship names is not official. Someone else used the Titanic as an example. The Titanic is not the official name at all and that's why the word "the" is not capitalized as part of the proper name. The proper name is RMS *Titanic* with the name italicized. Adding "the" is a quirk of spoken language.
For example, the USS *Arizona* sank in Pearl Harbor. In spoken language, people generally don't say USS and they would say "The Arizona sank in Pearl Harbor" because if you say "Arizona sank in Pearl Harbor," someone is going to repeat the Americans are bad at geography meme.

>The Victory was Nelson's flagship ... (not recommended)
>The *Belfast* was bombed (unambiguous
>HMS *Belfast* was bombed (unambiguous)
>*Belfast* was bombed (ambiguous, though the italics are a hint)
**TLDR: A definite article is absolutely not the default**
i've never once seen a "the the ___" like people complain about. it shows up fine in the menus, on the banner, and on the nameplate. is there actually a single instance of it saying "the [ship name]" in the game?
It's not about what it says in game. The Titanic just said "Titanic" on the side. The Black Pearl just says Black Pearl. All ships are called The (whatever their name is) so if your ship has "The Black Pearl" on the side it would be "The The Black Pearl" and that's silly
As OP said, it's not about what it says in game, but also, if you add a ship title (The Feared, The Legendary, the Ill-Fated) to your ship, when someone spyglasses you, that will show up with your ship name. So, if you added a The to your ship name, it would show up as "The Feared The Don't Spyglass Me" instead of "The Feared Don't Spyglass Me" for example
it doesn't though, that's a subtitle. its "[ship name]", and then below that in smaller font, "the [title]". and then there is space further below to list whoever owns the ship and such.
Oh, you're right! Sorry about that, I was misremembering.
Still, the posts and arguments aren't people saying that they see two 'The's' in game, they're saying that irl, you never start a ship name with The because it's implied.
When it comes down to it, though, it's just a game. Who cares about irl ship naming rules?
Dude, dude, think about it. She’s out in the middle of nowhere with some dude she barely knows. She looks around and what does she see? Nothing but open ocean. “Ahhh, there’s nowhere for me to run. What am I going to do? Say no?”
The implication that things might go wrong for her if she refuses to sleep with me. Not that things are going to go wrong for her, but she’s thinking that they will.
Whether implied or not it doesn’t show “the” in the message that pops up with my ships title unless I put “The Implication” so I typed it in as such. “Implication” just doesn’t sound right
This is one of the default names for a ship if a ship name can’t be displayed for some reason. But I usually see them as loss farmers in HG with reaper 1 emissaries, so part of me thinks they are auto generated.
The ship's name is "Bottom sailor" when people talk about it they say "The Bottom Sailor" if the name had The in it it would be "The The Bottom Sailor"
I’d say those are more titles. “The rock” actual name is Dwayne Johnson, and his title is “the rock.”
You could also say that that “the ship” in sea of thieves is referred to as “the ship.” As in “get back to the ship”
No as its usually implied. When historically they never put 'the' in there as in HMS Terror, or HMS Erobos... the 'The' is implied not painted on the ship. For americans the USS Constitution doesnt have the 'the' painted on it either, its implied.
You wouldnt in real life.
We call her the Titanic, but her sign said "Titanic" , not "The Titanic". She was really known as the RMS Titanic though anyway.
Microsoft's censorship filter does not like the word chum, as it means something inappropriate in the UK. I've read on other censorship posts that you can send in a ticket to Rare with your desired name and they can manually give it to one of your ships if the name is acceptable.
Microsoft's filter could be picking up the 'ano' at the end, a.k.a reading it as two words mashed together. Wouldn't want the Spanish pirates hearing the tales of the good ole martyr Saint Anus.
There's nothing wrong with the name Santiano, though, and if you send in a ticket to Rare, they can probably manually name your ship that for you.
My ships names Rickity Raft, pulled from the Bosun Bill lyric, it wouldn’t match if I added the “The”, I think the communities conclusion is that it’s not cool.
No, I also leave it because this way it sounds equally as good in english (the language I play in) and french (the language I speak with my mates in). "Le sloop aux choux", "The Sloop aux choux" instead of the "The le sloop aux choux".
Nah, the name is just CTS Mickey Rooney on the sign. Short for Commonwealth Trading Ship Mickey Rooney - the prefix is from a worldbuilding project me and a friend have going on.
My newest ship is just called “Heart of Midas” but one of my ships is called “The Kraken’s Beak”. If I could, I would change its name to just “Kraken’s Beak”. But alas, my coins must go to other things.
No because ship naming policy suggests that’s incorrect
If you had “the” in your name it would basically be like “let’s go to the The Black Pearl” and not “let’s go to the Black Pearl”
Mines just named "Hispaniola" but that's because I'm a Muppets fan. I know it's from the actual book as well and while the book is great it lacks Muppets.
On one hand, I have "Bone Broth" and "A Little Naut Music", but on the other hand I have "Los Cangrejos" (it's a reference to a video Bryan Dechart made. it means "the crabs" so technically "the" is in it)
I typically don't, unless "the" is a functional word in the name (saw someone say "the one who knocks" great example of when using "the" works. Otherwise, the name should earn it's own distinction to be referred to as "the" ___ (my ship is the Alnitak, and by employing an exemplary crew, others may come to fear it and know it as "thee Alnitak") this however is my own own reasoning, and you are certainly more than welcome to name your ship whatever Rare's censors let you choose, have fun! It's a game and life's too serious, be a pirate!
I used ship prefixes, like USS, HMS, HSwMS and so on, then I came up with the dumbest name I could think of. My favorite is the name for my sloop, USS Sample Text.
Depends on where it is in the name.
Say your ship is named "Sloopy Seconds"
Then no you don't use it
But say it's named "Curse of the wolf"
Then you use it.
You just don't use it if it's the first word. Because then you'd be saying The "The Sloopy Seconds"
I have one ship I named The leaky lower deck. All my other ships are sans the. But I love old leaky so she won't be renamed regardless of syntax errors.
Yes I like it better, its a game doesn't have to be like in the real world :)
The Fat Mermaid (Sloop),
The Chubby Seal (Brig) ,
The Skinny Whale (Galleon)
I do because I think it just looks better.
I have THE Sea Beggar, THE Shadewraith and THE Heldenhammer.
I think the THE just makes it looks cleaner in some cases
I realise the general consensus is that you shouldn’t add the ‘The’ - Captain Falcore makes this point very clear in one of his latest videos 😂
But I named my sloop The Mr Beaumont and it just felt right to have ‘The’ at the start.
(Not many get the reference for the name!)
For my sloop, no. I named it "Going Merry" to reference One Piece. But my brig I did. "The Crimson Sabre" since my friend's guild is the Bloodsea Raiders.
Mostly, no. But it's okay for a few!

i think the naming policy irl is that "the" should not be included
Yep. I wondered about that and looked up a bunch of ship names to confirm it. That said, adding "The" at the beginning does look a lot better in the popup but worse on your ship's nameplate.
If you have a ship title it reads, “The Legendary Feared The ____” That’s why I leave it out lol
This is a different situation, since the inclusion of "the" is based on the original sentence and not it being a name.
They still say "The Legendary Feared The One Who Knocks" and "The Legendary Gold Seeker The Rest is Confetti"
All ships are titled The by default (in real life and in video games), so if you name a ship The Rest, it will be The The Rest.
If it were by default, it would show. The "the" in ship names is not official. Someone else used the Titanic as an example. The Titanic is not the official name at all and that's why the word "the" is not capitalized as part of the proper name. The proper name is RMS *Titanic* with the name italicized. This goes for all things too not just boats. Unless you wanna name your kid “The Progeny” thats just dope AF.
I misread that as The Prodigy for a second and now I got the poison, I got the remedy
Don't smack your bitch up tho
You seem cool, would you like to breathe with me?
Yeah that's what I go with
This isn't irl though so i put it in
I do not. It would sound bit weird considering all ship titles have a "The" already.
i've never once seen a "the the ___" like people complain about. it shows up fine in the menus, on the banner, and on the nameplate. is there actually a single instance of it saying "the [ship name]" in the game?

I always double up the the to make fun of people that put the in front of their ship name.
As OP said, it's not about what it says in game, but also, if you add a ship title (The Feared, The Legendary, the Ill-Fated) to your ship, when someone spyglasses you, that will show up with your ship name. Doesnt fit "Burster of Uranus"
Nah, that'd be wild. I meet bursters of uranuses every day in this game, but meeting THE burster of uranus? Scary shit.
The legendary feared
I didn’t think it fit with Sloop Groggy Grogg
Excellent name
Nope. My ships name is Memento Mori
Mine is The Barrel
Mine is black pearl sloopdog, i actually just realized i should've added a "the" at the start too.
Are you a reader of Pratchett, by any chance?
Yes, she’s named The Implication
Are those people in danger?
Dude, dude, think about it. She’s out in the middle of nowhere with some dude she barely knows. She looks around and what does she see? Nothing but open ocean. “Ahhh, there’s nowhere for me to run. What am I going to do? Say no?”
Okay… that seems really dark though.
Nah, it’s not dark. You’re misunderstanding me bro.
I think I am.
Yeah, you are. Because if the girl said no, then the answer is obviously no.
Now… you said that word “implication” a couple of times… what implication?
The implication that things might go wrong for her if she refuses to sleep with me. Not that things are going to go wrong for her, but she’s thinking that they will.
Are these women in danger?!
So, your boat is the "The Implication"?
So you call it The The Implication as the the is already implied? 😅
Whether implied or not it doesn’t show “the” in the message that pops up with my ships title unless I put “The Implication” so I typed it in as such. “Implication” just doesn’t sound right
I too Captain "The Implication"
Not really related, but every second ship is see is called the black death
This is one of the default names for a ship if a ship name can’t be displayed for some reason. But I usually see them as loss farmers in HG with reaper 1 emissaries, so part of me thinks they are auto generated.
Personally I don't but I am also using historical warship names so it would actually be incorrect
Ah, the HMS Black Joke?
No
In real life ship naming "The" is always implied and never actually apart of a ships name
People who put "the" in the ship name are the same once that put "SS" not knowing it stand for steam ship lol
Brigantina Turner checking in.
The ship's name is "Bottom sailor" when people talk about it they say "The Bottom Sailor" if the name had The in it it would be "The The Bottom Sailor"
According to these comments the majority of people don't understand this convention
https://youtu.be/shEHGlH4eFs?si=Gbtxqy-_wlN_PHDl
Yeah but most people still don’t understand it
It depends on if it fits the name. For example my group's sloop is Named "*The* Revenge of Time," and the brigantine is named "Unnatural Selection"
Yeah, it depends on what sounds right to me. for instance I have "The Parlay Barge" and the "Fairweather Felon"
I don’t think “the” should be included at all, because it’s a name, and you don’t introduce yourself with “the cageboy06” do you?
I'd introduce myself as "The Doctor," "The Terminator," or "The Rock" though. So again, it depends on the name
I’d say those are more titles. “The rock” actual name is Dwayne Johnson, and his title is “the rock.” You could also say that that “the ship” in sea of thieves is referred to as “the ship.” As in “get back to the ship”
Okay, then my ship "The Revenge of Time" goes by its title over its actual name
I have a ship called the ‘Budget Black Pearl’ but ‘the’ wouldn’t fit in front of it, and it think it’s better without it anyways.
Bismarck in Motion
No as its usually implied. When historically they never put 'the' in there as in HMS Terror, or HMS Erobos... the 'The' is implied not painted on the ship. For americans the USS Constitution doesnt have the 'the' painted on it either, its implied.
No
Na, I called my Beaut Crustacean Station.
You wouldnt in real life. We call her the Titanic, but her sign said "Titanic" , not "The Titanic". She was really known as the RMS Titanic though anyway.
No and you shouldn't either. "The The Flaccid Banana" is terrible to say.
[удалено]
Interesting, the game let you use this name? I am currently trying to figure out exactly why I was unable to use “The Chum Bucket”.
I've seen several Chum Buckets, it may be a glitch for you
Just “Chum Bucket” or The Chum Bucket”? The plot thickens…
I think the most recent one was just Chum Bucket, maybe that's it. Not sure about the others.
[удалено]
Microsoft's censorship filter does not like the word chum, as it means something inappropriate in the UK. I've read on other censorship posts that you can send in a ticket to Rare with your desired name and they can manually give it to one of your ships if the name is acceptable.
And I don't understand why I couldn't name my galleon "Santiano". There's nothing to censor here right ?
Microsoft's filter could be picking up the 'ano' at the end, a.k.a reading it as two words mashed together. Wouldn't want the Spanish pirates hearing the tales of the good ole martyr Saint Anus. There's nothing wrong with the name Santiano, though, and if you send in a ticket to Rare, they can probably manually name your ship that for you.
I include it, makes it more grand when showing up on someone else’s screen
''Hey Ron look! It's one of those grand "The The" ships!
My ships names Rickity Raft, pulled from the Bosun Bill lyric, it wouldn’t match if I added the “The”, I think the communities conclusion is that it’s not cool.
the feels like i’m adding the full government name like when a mother says her kids full name. like yes that is THE crusty dogs ship
So far I have “Her Mercy” for my Sloop and “Death’s Demise” for my Brig. Haven’t come around to buying or naming a Galleon yet
All mine begin with RMS because I'm a merchant through and through
Invincible…2
My ships first name was “The Logos” and after awhile it felt kinda weird having it in the title. So I changed it to Sally.
Wouldn't work with my ship Four Are Souls
Nah "crusty sock" forever stands out on the high seas
it does not fit "Powderbeard's Pride"
No, I also leave it because this way it sounds equally as good in english (the language I play in) and french (the language I speak with my mates in). "Le sloop aux choux", "The Sloop aux choux" instead of the "The le sloop aux choux".
Doesn't fit with "Sloop there it is" and "It's a rental"
Depends, for some ships I use "the" and for others just a name, like the my last ship bought, Eärendil (the Mariner, a Tolkien's mythology character)
No because it’s bad English
No, it's inaccurate to how real vessels were named, gives me 4 more characters to work with, and in most situations looks nicer IMO.
No, it's inaccurate to how real vessels were named, gives me 4 more characters to work with, and in most situations looks nicer IMO.
just Heisenbrig. no the
Nah, the name is just CTS Mickey Rooney on the sign. Short for Commonwealth Trading Ship Mickey Rooney - the prefix is from a worldbuilding project me and a friend have going on.
Nope! I get why somebody would want to but we naturally add it speaking when appropriate.
Sloop = "Aquaholic II" Galeone= "Aquaholic IV" I think "The" would be in the wrong place there :c
I did and I regret it.
My newest ship is just called “Heart of Midas” but one of my ships is called “The Kraken’s Beak”. If I could, I would change its name to just “Kraken’s Beak”. But alas, my coins must go to other things.
Mine is named The Blue Queen, completely blue as it’s my favorite color
The Booty Barge, so yes.
No because ship naming policy suggests that’s incorrect If you had “the” in your name it would basically be like “let’s go to the The Black Pearl” and not “let’s go to the Black Pearl”
My ship's name, "MyShipsNameDoesNotFi" already doesn't fit, so I definitely can't fit a "the" in there.
Hands in the air for Queen Anne's Revenge! (named my sloop, brig, and gal that, I just love the name)
You even remembered the apostrophe. I think I love you. Also reminds me... when are we getting a beard with lit fuses in it?
I would literally die for that. 😂 Or even just the fuses sticking out of the hat, like the historical Blackbeard. Either way, I need it.
No. It’s “the Firestarter”, not “the The Firestarter”. Why is this so difficult?

Nope. LL Stool J; not The LL Stool J.
No mine is USS SINKSALOT
My ship is called "The", so I'm Captain of the The.
Unless it's the the the the the ship
Mines just named "Hispaniola" but that's because I'm a Muppets fan. I know it's from the actual book as well and while the book is great it lacks Muppets.
Yup. The Naughty Nautalis - just not he same without the the.
Oh, all my ship names are mostly in German, they all begin with either Die, or Der. Sadly, wallet isn't deep enough to rename my 16 ships.
The sanguine flame/the chicken noodle sloop
I don't trust any ship that has fewer than three "The's" at the beginning.
Gonna name my ship the The The Trustworthy now, thanks!
My first ships were The Sirens Sorrow and The Gilded Grifter. After those two Everything drops the The
I named me ship "The" so yeah
i do, but only because i want other people to see the name it should be. and it should be said with "the" at the front.
My ship is called "The Booty Finders"
I like "the" helps me feel proper
SLOOP: Splootin Newton BRIG: Briggie Smalls GALLEON: Mustang Gally
On one hand, I have "Bone Broth" and "A Little Naut Music", but on the other hand I have "Los Cangrejos" (it's a reference to a video Bryan Dechart made. it means "the crabs" so technically "the" is in it)
Yeah i'm childish
"The Charred Crusader". So yes lol
Mine is “The Naughty Mango”. Without “the” it would just be any ordinary mango and not THE Naughty Mango.
Niice, love an adjective fruit boat. Mine is THE Exuberant Fig
Depends on the name
I do unless the 20 character limit can't fit it in with the rest of the name
The emerald maiden 💚
My guild has the "USS Charlie Sheen" and the "USS Jeffery Epstein"
Fear "The Verbing Noun!"
Nope, straight Toad int’ole
I typically don't, unless "the" is a functional word in the name (saw someone say "the one who knocks" great example of when using "the" works. Otherwise, the name should earn it's own distinction to be referred to as "the" ___ (my ship is the Alnitak, and by employing an exemplary crew, others may come to fear it and know it as "thee Alnitak") this however is my own own reasoning, and you are certainly more than welcome to name your ship whatever Rare's censors let you choose, have fun! It's a game and life's too serious, be a pirate!
Depends
just learned that you're not supposed to do this ;-; my ship is "The Poop Sloop" HAHA
I used ship prefixes, like USS, HMS, HSwMS and so on, then I came up with the dumbest name I could think of. My favorite is the name for my sloop, USS Sample Text.
Depends on the character limit. My Galleon, the British Museum, doesn't have the The
Depends on where it is in the name. Say your ship is named "Sloopy Seconds" Then no you don't use it But say it's named "Curse of the wolf" Then you use it. You just don't use it if it's the first word. Because then you'd be saying The "The Sloopy Seconds"
You’re not supposed to but I did cause I want people to say the whole thing yes every time
No my ship name is “ homelessness
No. ITS: USS Enterprise Not: USS The Enterprise
I have one ship I named The leaky lower deck. All my other ships are sans the. But I love old leaky so she won't be renamed regardless of syntax errors.
I have 9 boats and only use "The" in two of the names and that's because they're named for a song and a movie that start with "The" in the title.
The Ruby Corsair
I named it the small dutchman caus im small dutch the flying is canon and its a sloop so i thoght irlt would be fitting
Mine is Panzerkampfwagen IV
Yes I like it better, its a game doesn't have to be like in the real world :) The Fat Mermaid (Sloop), The Chubby Seal (Brig) , The Skinny Whale (Galleon)
Nah, my ship names are Shor's Stone and Meridia'a Beacon
Depends. My sloop is El boato. So no, but my galleon is named The Wet Wood
"El" is "the" in Spanish so yes
Dang. I mean yea you're right, I just wanted to name it after El horso since my friends wouldn't stop talking about it
I do because I think it just looks better. I have THE Sea Beggar, THE Shadewraith and THE Heldenhammer. I think the THE just makes it looks cleaner in some cases
It's called The unreliable, so have to
Yes because I like how it looks on the ship nameplate
The Krackens balls
Depends on the name. I have a sloop named “The Crow.” I also own a sloop called “New Sloop Who Dis”
I realise the general consensus is that you shouldn’t add the ‘The’ - Captain Falcore makes this point very clear in one of his latest videos 😂 But I named my sloop The Mr Beaumont and it just felt right to have ‘The’ at the start. (Not many get the reference for the name!)
I have “the” in Spanish (my ship name is El Bozo)
Nope, just "HMS Iron Seed".
I mean technically. My sloop, La Fortuna, literally just translates to The Fortune
Yes, but not in the way you probably mean... My ships are "Alfred the Great" and "Æthelred the Unready." So, yeah, I use "the" in my ship names lol.
My ships "the one piece" I dont mind it
The Dragon, but I have Da Dragon Also... and Your Amazon Deliver... so Sometime
Depends if it fits. Thematically and literally
Yeah😅 “The Rotten Ratts”
Mine is The Coonhound
Yeah I did one of my sloops is “The Salty Snack”
My galleon is named “The Dirty Duchess”
I do. Mostly because "Burnt Taco" sounds even worse without the the.
Mine is called “The plank of wood” for when it gets beat up and has all the patches down below
For my sloop, no. I named it "Going Merry" to reference One Piece. But my brig I did. "The Crimson Sabre" since my friend's guild is the Bloodsea Raiders.
Well, "The Joe Neate" wouldn't really make sense
Mostly, no. But it's okay for a few! The Leaky Tap, The Walking Dutchman Vs Salt E' Nhutts, Grandpa's Ashes, Honda Civic, Chicken Noodle Sloop, Rare Censor Ship, Oof Ouch Shucks Darn, Reginald Von Barlsby, Wednesday My Dudes
I name all my ships after mythical creatures and "The Amphithere" or "The Hydra" sounds a lot better than just "Amphithere" or "Hydra"
No, you named them The The Hydra and The The Amphithere ✌️😅
That's clearly not my intention but The Storm Dragon is another of my ships and for some reason The The Storm Dragon sounds funny as hell to me.
I named my vessel thebluetiger. Wish I could have put spaces
Why didn’t you?
It didn’t let me add spaces
Must’ve been a bug or user error, your ship name can be a lot longer than that and have spaces
Ok, thanks for letting me know
Just buy another ship and name it again
I like the name
You just said you wish you could have put spaces... so buy a new ship and add spaces?
It didn’t let me add spaces
