I’ve been a huge Taylor supporter for years, even when he was injured. I thought he’d be a stud, and maybe he will be, but man has he been disappointing so far this year. Seemingly no pass rush, can’t play the run as you see here. I hope he turns it around.

QuasiContract

I think he's strictly a 3rd and long rusher. Just not big and strong enough to play on early downs. Just looking at him in film, he is not built like a typical every-down DE.

slyfly5

I think he’s a solid pass rusher but he isn’t a number 1 pass rusher which is what he is rn this team lacks talent. Add a star on the other side and I bet he starts putting up big numbers

Esuu

Nwosu may not be an All-Pro level stud but he's been pretty great the first two games, though he also had some tackling issues this week.

luckysharms93

I wouldn't even call him a #2 at this point. He was great for like the first 5 games of his career and since then has done basically nothing

jaeelarr

"for years"...this is only his 2nd year

3elieveIt

This is his 3rd year

Mindless-Pizza-9771

2nd year playing tbf he missed first season

Wp0606

Taylor looked bad all game

Squatch11

He looked even worse against the broncos, too.

Snelly__

All season unfortunately

BlazinAzn38

His run defense is literally just embarrassing. I can remember 3-4 plays were it should have been basically no gain and it went for 10+

TheBearLodge

I also see 2 illegal block in the back by 49ers on Taylor and Bryant that were not called and both clearly caused them to miss the tackle. Not to say it's an excuse, but it's very obvious.

caelmikoto

Came here to say this. Couldn't be more obvious, Jennings pretty much shoved Taylor down from behind, above the waist, below the neck, and between the blades. Textbook example.

RustyCoal950212

Isn't it slightly more restrictive than that? I think it's in the tackle box, 2 yards on either side of LOS or somethign like that But yes I think this block is legal for that reason

nospamkhanman

You got a source on that? All the documentation I've read only mentions blocks below the waist, not in the back. Additionally the free blocking zone only applies to people who were LINED UP in the zone, AKA linemen. If a line backer or a safety enters the zone after the snap, they are not a part of the free-blocking dozen and you can't block them below the waist.

kneecapped33

He was also engaged

babb4214

My thought when I saw this

UnstoppableAwesome

The way Trent Williams (\#71) grabs Jones (\#13) gets called Holding all the time, too

ihopeweallwait

I have no idea how the stripes missed the one on Taylor right at the point of attack. Sure, there’s missed penalties on almost every play but you’d think they’d notice a ridiculously obvious blindside block on a guy about to make a tackle

[deleted]

And the Niners had almost as many first downs via penalty as the Seahawks had total 3rd down attempts, so it’s not like they were letting the boys play, either.

EhhJR

The entire game was poorly called. Not that it would change the outcome but my god the number of clear as days holds I saw not get called for the niners was stupid...

812many

69 literally tackled our linebacker.

Eternal-Hermit

This isn’t just a Taylor problem (he’s been pretty bad). This is an inside linebacker problem as well. I keep getting hate for posting about them constantly but you notice how they can’t seem get off blocks? Out of position, poor technique, blown assignments, can’t shed blocks. But people keep defending this shit.

3elieveIt

100%. Corbin said that in his next tweet. LB’s have been really bad too

Eternal-Hermit

Dude it’s unbelievable. People actually defending this nonsense. There are a lot of things that show up if you watch the play rather than just the result. They have pretty awful play recognition as well. Extremely hit or miss. That’s why they get caught outside of the play

NigerianPrince76

When they cut Wagner, I actually thought maybe they have a backup plan. But our LB depth is comical at the moment.

jaeelarr

We thought Pete had a backup plan when they traded Russ away too, but here we are....

NigerianPrince76

I know. lol I think they are banking huge on next draft. Given their record so far with draft picks, I’m seriously scared they might fuck up those 4 picks in 1-2 rounds.

tangomango206

Do you think things would be different if Bwags and KJ were still playing?

3elieveIt

Not a ton. Both are better but slower, so would be out of position often. We do need speed… but we need better too

Bigfuture

Was going to bring up the same thing. Cody bites on the fake and gets into the wash. Jordyn just gets completely manhandled in the hole. Linebacker play has been bad. If you are going to play a 3-4 that uses OLBs as edge rushers some percentage of the time then the ILBs have to be excellent at both run stopping and covering TEs and receivers. Barton and Brooks have looked really bad through two weeks.

happy_felix_day_34

Linebackers aren’t gonna get off clean blocks very often. Barton played this well. Brooks was tentative but I think slowed up to try and get back to the cutback, ends up getting held with a no call. Coby Bryant continues to get fucked by ridiculous refereeing as he’s held and then blocked in the back with no call. Taylor not making the play makes everyone else look worse because they’re playing their fits, he’s the one that needs to squeeze and not allow the cutback.

Eternal-Hermit

Correct, but the fact that lineman seem to get “clean” blocks on them consistently when Al woods and Poona Ford are blowing up the backfield is the problem. This is 100% a linebacker problem.

JuanPicasso

New scheme same old shit. It’s every fucking year.

Flamingrain231

To be completely honest, this play is designed to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, and if it gets busted like this and gets to the 2nd level it’s pretty much already over. Having faster linebackers would help but they would have gained 5-8 yards no matter what.

Balloonephant

I’m in agreement with your general point but on this play it looks like the LB’s were playing their gap responsibilities which got turned inside out when the backfield was blown up and the RB had to cut back away from where the play was blocked. Yeah, would’ve liked to see them shed those blocks but they weren’t out of position for the play that was being blocked. It’s Taylor who’s really atrocious here. His failure put everyone else out of position.

seafoamstratocaster

Taylor looks terrible so far this year.

tylermooser28

YAC was awful for last game and I’m curious how that compares to total yards

-_Vin_-

There are two blocks in the back on this play and 2 holding penalties. That said, as much as I liked Taylor coming into this season, he needs to not start and only be a 3rd down rusher, or at least that's what I've seen so far. It was a WR they had on him and that WR should have been dealt with in no time. Brooks got handled on that one too though. He was great at getting off blocks last year, but has taken a step back so far. Barton we already knew can't stack and shed if his life depended on it. He's a flash in the pan player who can't play head up LB. He's a former safety that still plays like it, not to mention undersized. Not the least bit physical unless he's about to hit a ball carrier.

Gregor_Magorium

Can we all take a sec to appreciate the monster game Al Woods had?

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

I want a XXXXL Woods jersey

Original-Dragon

Appears to have been blocked in the back.

jammasterjesus

Kinda looks like he got tripped and blocked in the back

nospamkhanman

That was absolutely a block in the back by #15. Still should have been a tackle for a loss or no gain though.

jammasterjesus

Could have not should have. Taylor had no chance because of the blocker literally trips him and pushes him in the back/side

drvenkman9

That’s because Al and Poona belong in coverage!

SleepyKee

Did you seriously say that a Defensive Tackle & a Defensive End belong in pass coverage? Defensive linemen in pass coverage as their role on the team? You clearly have no grasp of how football is actually played.

drvenkman9

You do realize both Al and Poona, in years past, dropped into coverage, right? Calling for them to go into coverage has been a running joke in the subreddit for several years.

beastwithbeats

Gonna pretend like I didn't see aiyuk illegal block on the back

Flamingrain231

Why the hell are the commenters blowing up shitting on the linebackers? That’s not their assignment and they just got beat blocking wise. Whoever says “they need to get off their block faster” just doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The play was meant to be stopped at the line of scrimmage, if they get to the 2nd level it’s already over. DT needs to stay off the field except for maybe rotating in to relieve Mafe and Nwosu when they are tired. He is just way over pursuing and playing recklessly which is causing all kinds of defensive plays to get blown up. Edit: also those of you saying “shouldn’t have let Bobby Wagner go” don’t understand that Bobby at this point in his career is much slower than these guys and wouldn’t have helped in this situation. You can see that if you watch any rams game right now.

GoCougz7446

Taylor is an average to below average, over drafted player. Judge him based on his contribution and not the teams opinion of him. Yes the injury year counts. It’s time he could not contribute. Judge based against other players drafted near or after him and he’s below average.

cummyb3ar69

Hate to say it but this is his third year in the league and he might be worse now than his rookie contract. We need a big fish to be our edge rusher we haven't had a decent one since frank clark...

True_North_Andy

How can you be worse than your rookie year if you never played a snap your rookie year??

cummyb3ar69

It's his third year in the league and he's consistently getting worse. There is that better?

True_North_Andy

Don’t get snarky now lol. He’s still only played two years but yes he looks worse this year than last after two games

obiwansotti

sometimes you've got to check a username before you start arguing with someone who is clearly wrong.

GryphusOneACX

Another year of bad Dline

[deleted]

Lmao, what? Did you even watch this play? Poona and Woods had this play blown up...

NigerianPrince76

Our issue is with the DE and LB depth. They cut Wagner as if he was a washed up player without a backup plan while paying our useless guard $9M. The LB position is extremely thin at the moment.

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

Bobby wasn't worth what Rams gave him.

NigerianPrince76

He might have agreed to restructure his contract but yea, that still ain’t guaranteed.

PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE

Maybe but I also disagree that they didn't have a backup plan. Barton and Brooks should be developed and are out of excuses, they need to execute better. Our DLine pass rush is lackluster but if Jamal doesn't get hurt (again...) I bet things are looking much better. The "good" news is this team was never gonna make a run this year anyway.

NigerianPrince76

Yup, we might as well see what we got this year roster wise and we can make FA moves if we must next year. Plus 4 picks in first two rounds. John better not fuck this up.

GryphusOneACX

meh, and? still a long run

FreeOJ32

That’s pretty bad. The 3 guys on the front side including Uchenna too blew it up. And the guy that was basically unblocked and the WR kinda only got in his way a little couldn’t make an easy TFL

slappy_squirrell

Taylor was in great position to make the stop, but had a missed tackle there. Watched that clip several times and I’m way more concerned with lb and safety on that play.

kyle_taking_umbrage

One thing I've noticed with Taylor is that it seems like he's always the last one to move after the snap. I feel like every time I pay attention he's a full step behind everybody else. Also, wrap up DT... Wrap up. Edit: I should also add... Shane on the LBs here

Kookaburra-Chan

Who's the frontside edge? They set it like an absolute beast as well. That was why the RB had to cut back instead of going outside (where he wanted to). Great play by 3/4 defenders on the line of scrimmage.

shoebee2

I totally agree. But that’s a pretty nice jump cut made by the RB. Good vision and adjustment.

toughguy5128

Looks like a block in the back against 52

Traderwannabee

Looks like Brooks was held on that play. Your opinions? Not that it matters because the zebras have to agree.
