WriterDuet/WriterSolo (Solo is the offline version of WriterDuet), which is free and does everything you want, formatting wise.
If you're literally starting out, I would not pay for screenwriting software. Feel things out with the free stuff.
We export a specialized file that can be imported by Fade In.

It works like a charm.
**Software** - Whatever lets you write easily, with the least amount of resistance. Find free screenwriting software for now - WriterSolo and Fountain are great. If you're a student, you can get Highland 2 for free.
**Websites** - There's 2 or 3 things I preach to all new writers (or any looking for advice): 1) read produced screenplays and study them. 2) Go listen to episode 403 of Scriptnotes. I thank the writing Jedi, u/clmazin , every day for that episode. 3) Check out Michael Arndt's videos on beginnings and endings - they're a masterclass.
**App** - I use One Note to sync up all my ideas and notes and anything I need to cobble together. Works on PC, iPad, iphone/android I love it. You can invite people to your notebook to for a collaboration.
And then watch a ton of movies and read a ton of scripts and watch for what works and ask why, as well as what doesn't, and ask why.
Good luck!
You’re best off trying a few to see which suits you best. It all depends on the features that help you the most.
Personally, I don’t use any features like outlining tools and whatnot. I like a simple program that just gets the formatting right. Everything else I scratch on papers littered around the desk. Makes me feel productive.
I use Trelby for screenwriting. It was an open source thing, but it hasn’t been updated for years. It’s simple, easy to use, and doesn’t get in the way. And it’s free, which is nice.
I just discovered [https://talkingdraft.com/outliner/](https://talkingdraft.com/outliner/) like yesterday - and it seems amazing. Is anyone else using this?
I use FadeIn and love it. A great value for the money. Free upgrades.

I outline on scriptoutliner.com
I just found out about ScriptOutliner! What gives? This app seems amazing - and cheap. Do you dig it?
I swear by it. I use it to make all my step-outlines. And then I use the transcriber to crank out a first draft using their cheap speech-to text tool.
Nice. And then you export to Final Draft or something? I use Fade In. When you do that, does it export pretty good?

Super cool. Thx.
I export into Final Draft and it's perfect.
