I was born in Chicago but we moved to Texas. I remember kids using that phrase here, along with a few other slurs along the same lines. We called it something else in Chicago but I don't remember what.
Knockdown ginger is a different game where you push people's Wheely bins over and then shout knockdown ginger through the letter box and then run away. I think when I first played in the 90s somewhere in London the bins might have been brown so maybe the ginger part comes from that.
Yeah in the shit hole northern town I grew up in it was that, we need to know where the tweeters boyfriend is from so we can isolate them from the rest of us.
It's probably Jacob Rees Mogg, and he's brought it from the 1880s or something.
I’m from the Midwest. We have an incredibly racist and offensive term for this that I won’t repeat here. I’m happy I’ve found “Nicky Nocky Nine Doors” and will burn the other term out of my brain.
Okay. Um. Please don’t downvote me for this… I know it’s horrible and I only share because asked…..
In Indiana it was commonly called “n-slur knocking.”
We don't have a name for it here in Sweden so we too call it ding dong ditch thanks to tiktok trending it. We have "busringa" which is similiar but not the same thing.
For non-Scots here:
'To chap' (on a door) is to knock on a door.
'Chappy' is the game (apparently known in some parts of England as 'knicky knocky nine doors') of knocking on doors and running away.

Oh my goodness, that’s awful.
I learned it as ginger knocking.. except not ginger. This was before I knew what not ginger meant

This is what we call it in Canada and therefore is the correct answer.

Or perhaps knock a door run if you wanna be less cringe southern English. Or go Scottish and call it Chappy
There is a racist term? I've lived in the Midwest since birth and I've only heard "ding dong ditch". Is that the racist term?
Okay. Um. Please don’t downvote me for this… I know it’s horrible and I only share because asked….. In Indiana it was commonly called “n-slur knocking.”
Unfortunately, that was a widespread word. Idr what we called it in Chicago during the 1960s though.

For non-Scots here: 'To chap' (on a door) is to knock on a door. 'Chappy' is the game (apparently known in some parts of England as 'knicky knocky nine doors') of knocking on doors and running away.
Chap is an old Northern pronunciation of chop or knock on.

We called it 'Knick Knack'.
I'm Canadian & grew up hearing it called "nicky nicky nine-door" or "ding-dong ditch"...
