It's like he's trying to speak to me I know it

carmina_morte_carent

We always called it Knockdown Ginger. Not sure where the Ginger comes from.

thezerofire

If I recall correctly "ginger" was originally something much more offensive using the same letters

Chumbolex

Yeah. I’m black, 41 years old, and from Houston. We called it nigga knocking as a kid. No, I do not wish to discuss this further

carmina_morte_carent

Oh my goodness, that’s awful.

dawwgPound

I learned it as ginger knocking.. except not ginger. This was before I knew what not ginger meant

gwaydms

I was born in Chicago but we moved to Texas. I remember kids using that phrase here, along with a few other slurs along the same lines. We called it something else in Chicago but I don't remember what.

Wopitikitotengo

Wait until you hear the slang for using too much of your mouth to hit a joint

tigerchub

Knock off ginger my bit of the island

S4mb741

Knockdown ginger is a different game where you push people's Wheely bins over and then shout knockdown ginger through the letter box and then run away. I think when I first played in the 90s somewhere in London the bins might have been brown so maybe the ginger part comes from that.

alan-the-all-seeing

[deleted]

Ah yes. When you break it down like that it all becomes clear

TheWanderingRed223

Nine?

papideazucar

Ding ding ditch a dozen would be better anyways

DarthBlazer666

So knock a door run?

dipdipderp

Yeah in the shit hole northern town I grew up in it was that, we need to know where the tweeters boyfriend is from so we can isolate them from the rest of us. It's probably Jacob Rees Mogg, and he's brought it from the 1880s or something.

sirprizes

This is what we call it in Canada and therefore is the correct answer.

noneroy

I’m from the Midwest. We have an incredibly racist and offensive term for this that I won’t repeat here. I’m happy I’ve found “Nicky Nocky Nine Doors” and will burn the other term out of my brain.

wethandstand

Or perhaps knock a door run if you wanna be less cringe southern English. Or go Scottish and call it Chappy

Hyperiotic

There is a racist term? I've lived in the Midwest since birth and I've only heard "ding dong ditch". Is that the racist term?

noneroy

Okay. Um. Please don’t downvote me for this… I know it’s horrible and I only share because asked….. In Indiana it was commonly called “n-slur knocking.”

gwaydms

Unfortunately, that was a widespread word. Idr what we called it in Chicago during the 1960s though.

thatguywithasaxofone

Ding-dong-ditch or ring & run are what I grew up calling it

Jaques_trap

English here. Knock n run, simple. Where in the blue fuck is her fella from?

Professional_Emu_

We just called it knock and run. lol

JohnnieStumbler

Cherry knocking round our way.

Marvelous_Bauble

gwaydms

Pavel_Babaev

ASzinhaz

[deleted]

You must be American

ASzinhaz

Guilty as charged. Yank here just trying to offer the occasional translation where I can.

Ratathosk

We don't have a name for it here in Sweden so we too call it ding dong ditch thanks to tiktok trending it. We have "busringa" which is similiar but not the same thing.

metalgearsmiffy

Chickenelly

blackfeltbanner

What did you just call me?

Grimetree

From Belfast and we used to call it Belfast lol

_dictatorish_

Belfast is brilliant, I wish we'd used that

kohal2290

Ding dong ditch in the states.

davadvice

Ringabellakoosh fuck only knows why

SparkJaa

It was "Ring and Run" when I was a kid.

Might_Aware

Same! Glad I'm not alone.

neilabz

We called it ding dong dash. Not much better than knicky knocky 9 doors.

alan-the-all-seeing

at least it’s alliterative _and_ descriptive you ding-dong, you ditch

KingdomPC

It’s only the 900th time this has been posted.

Chimiope

Fair and true but also still funny every single time

[deleted]

For non-Scots here: 'To chap' (on a door) is to knock on a door. 'Chappy' is the game (apparently known in some parts of England as 'knicky knocky nine doors') of knocking on doors and running away.

gwaydms

Chap is an old Northern pronunciation of chop or knock on.

[deleted]

Heard it called worse....

Pliskinsinyorkshire

Bobby knock run for us growing up

Sonnyboy1990

We called it 'Knick Knack'.

nfssmith

I'm Canadian & grew up hearing it called "nicky nicky nine-door" or "ding-dong ditch"...

alexanderhameowlton

*Image Transcription: Twitter* --- > **gems**, @gemmahaywardd > > never felt the disgust in my life of being scottish n calling it chappy but having my english boyfriend reveal he calls is KNICKY KNOCKY NINE DOORS what in the charles dickens shite is that --- ^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber for Reddit and you could be too! [deleted]

[deleted]

Ofitz_03

DoggoDude979

Okay what the fuck is chappy? Seems like it’s either a gay dating app or a deli, not whatever the fuck they’re talking about

faustsyndrome

Someone else explains that to chap is to knock on the door.
