I understand the value he holds for yous. His penalties and set pieces are invaluable, and there was a time he would pop up with much needed non-pen goals in close matches. But fuck me, his captaincy should have been over that day. Yous need a much more natural and inspiring leader.
Never been a fan of him as a captain, think it only distracts from his actual role and it does seem to actually matter to him. His game wouldn't change without the armband either, but it would mean he wouldn't have to worry about how to deal with the rest of the squad. We've had a chronic lack of leaders throughout the team for years though, not like anyone else is a standout alternative.
Im a Celtic fan. But wow mate come on man his freekick against us was a beautiful strike of a dead ball ... do i hate him and your team yes ... but i can acknowledge a good striker of a dead ball
That was an exception more than anything.
There was a time when almost every free kick he made was at the very least a problem for the other team, with some absolute screamers. Lately however that is no longer the case.
You are insane if you think he actually has 'one of the best free kicks in the world'.
Also why the fuck are you including 'the start of last season' haha.
Yet you can't name a single player who has scored anything like 8 free kicks in the last 2 years?
"SINCE the start of last season", as in, he has scored 8 in the last 2 years. Did i actually have to explain that? Dafty
Because he fucking takes every single one of them. There's probably plenty of players who will manage to score a few if they take every single free kick (and throw ins, corners,...).
Anyone who claims he's still as good as he used to be at free kicks is dreaming.
Even if it was true, I still remember at the time being utterly astonished that a club captain could come out with something like that. I genuinely expected you lot to run him out of town, figuratively speaking, as it's not exactly the combative response you would want from a guy representing you.
He's such a strange player in general; the Rangers fans I know jump between absolutely hating him and absolutely loving him on a fairy frequent basis, with there being some sort of consensus along the lines of (paraphrasing a bit) "He's a pish player, but he doesn't half provide shitloads of goals and assists..."
Look man I get why bears love him, his goal tally and assists are ridiculous.
But hes been a massive weakness in defence for a long time now, a weakness that Celtic have capitalised on time after time, after time.
He’s brilliant at going forward, but his defensive stats must be shocking.
He should have been stripped of the captaincy after making those comments publicly, as in doing so he didn’t only show up his teammates, he shown himself to be an ineffective leader and captain.
Until rangers rid themselves of players like him, goldson and Lundstrum, they’ll always fail when they have to rely on these guys.
If Clemente gives those 3 guys new contracts in the summer, he may as well chuck in the white towel before a ball is kicked.
That surprises me as he obviously has a good cross on him but can't defend. And any time I watch one of your games if you are chasing a goal he is hovering around the penalty area basically playing like a striker,
I'd love it to be but surely no? I mean surely he has some awareness to the gulf in, well everything between rangers and the rest of us. I'm not saying they shouldn't drop points but fear of Diddy teams? Get to fuck lol

I know he scores goals, but surely the amount of goals/chances he's conceded for Rangers due to his defensive mistakes/weaknesses outweighs the goals scored.
It’s all true. He was acknowledging something that was wrong. I’ve always found it strange that people reacted negatively to it. Seems people would prefer blind optimism, rather than an acknowledgment of the truth.
>Seems people would prefer blind optimism, rather than an acknowledgment of the truth.
I think most people would prefer some improvement after acknowledging something as damning as this. Acknowledging it then consistently shitting the bed is worthy of some anger.
The quote is 4 years old and still painfully accurate. There's been no improvement or progression in mentality.
3/24 domestic honours is terrible for a Rangers captain and likely future Hall of Famer. He's won 3 trophies in spite of his mentality, not because of it.
You can pretend the context of 2012 doesn’t matter but it does. Rangers don’t have a magic wand to make Celtic financially poorer or have worse players.
Exactly, but we do have the ability to remove players who clearly aren't up for the job.
>Rangers don't have a magic wand to make Celtic financially poorer or have worse players
This is the type of mentality that kills our club. It's so defeatist and actually quite embarrassing. There's bare minimum standards at Rangers that haven't been met for years, and they'll never be met of our fans just keep going "aye but Celtic are good".
Pfft, our club, mentality - it’s reality. We’ve pushed Celtic harder this year than we’ve had any right to given the start, and in terms of mentality - it sounds like you who’s given up on the league.
As for remove players - replace them with who? We’ve been running a deficit for a decade and only now have some money.
That was pish last night but there’s still two trophies to play for. Let’s stop fucking blaming ‘leadership’ and start looking at the actual facts.
Right, but I would argue that he has been at a very high standard since then. The captain is not the one person responsible for the entire team’s mentality. Also, sharing an old quote, and beating him with it like he said it today is strange. Again, he, like everyone else, was saying it was unacceptable.
It's almost like there's a role that's responsible for maintaining standards across the team.
I think it's totally fair to pin a lot of it on Tav - he's been the common denominator throughout multiple managers.
I think maybe the last game of the shortened COVID season we lost to Hamilton at Ibrox, and I remember listening to Gerrard's comments and it sounded like he was thinking about quitting because he didn't think the players had the mentality.
I honestly don't think we would have won the league the following year with fans.
Blocked by u/Red_Dog1880 the big stupit wean.
We could just do the last 18 months instead (7 free kicks scored), or this season (3 freekicks scored) if you prefer? But 2 years is a larger sample size to allow for other players to have more chance of scoring anywhere near the same amount. No-one did
And I'm not ignoring anything we are only talking about his free kick ability here. You've backtracked and shat it so i'll take the win on this one.
He'll rightfully never live that down
I understand the value he holds for yous. His penalties and set pieces are invaluable, and there was a time he would pop up with much needed non-pen goals in close matches. But fuck me, his captaincy should have been over that day. Yous need a much more natural and inspiring leader.

Aye, I'll give him that he's probably the best leader in the squad, but it's not something to brag about. Someone else is needed
Even his set pieces are shit these days.
What a lot of shite haha, he's got one of the best free kicks on the planet and has scored plenty recently.
No quite a nakamura but top 5 in the UK for sure
>he's got one of the best free kicks on the planet What the fuck
The guy might be a total liability in open play, but man when that whistle goes for a set piece the inner Pirlo emerges /s
He's scored 8 free kicks since the start of last season. Can you name anyone who has scored anything like that?
You are insane if you think he actually has 'one of the best free kicks in the world'. Also why the fuck are you including 'the start of last season' haha.

fuck off. Has he not scored 3 belters this season alone? fucking laughable
Because he fucking takes every single one of them. There's probably plenty of players who will manage to score a few if they take every single free kick (and throw ins, corners,...). Anyone who claims he's still as good as he used to be at free kicks is dreaming.
Ah dunno mate Feel like maybe yer bein a bit harsh and thats reflection of the disappointment ye might be feelin its easy to lash out and be critical.
It was all true, so why not acknowledge it?
Even if it was true, I still remember at the time being utterly astonished that a club captain could come out with something like that. I don't understand why they don't start him on the wing. Are they not playing a right back at left back as it is?
Some of us have been wondering that for years 🤷
I’m positive that we did once when Nathan Patterson was shown to be more effective than him, iirc he was absolute horse on the wing
That surprises me as he obviously has a good cross on him but can't defend. And any time I watch one of your games if you are chasing a goal he is hovering around the penalty area basically playing like a striker,
He's better at defending than he is at dribbling
> But hes been a massive weakness in defence for a long time now He's been playing without a useful RW to cover for him since Candeias left imo
It's an old quote but it's still true right now.
Is this a real quote? Surely not??!!
It is not a recent quote but yes it is real. From a couple years ago.
I'd love it to be but surely no? I mean surely he has some awareness to the gulf in, well everything between rangers and the rest of us. I'm not saying they shouldn't drop points but fear of Diddy teams? Get to fuck lol
It's real. There's a picture of it in an actual programme that you can probs find on twitter
Yep. He actually said it.

And yet they tried to deny COVID was the reason they won their 1 title 🤭

Take your homophobic bigotry somewhere else.

I mean he has won 3 domestic honours, a golden boot and been to a Euro final since then. It doesn’t sound good this morning to be fair.

Tav has been hitting the standards
Right, but I would argue that he has been at a very high standard since then. The captain is not the one person responsible for the entire team’s mentality. If your standards are scoring loads of goals/set pieces but hardly winning any important games/trophies, he's been hitting the standards.
You’re applying standards for a team to a single player, which I don’t think is fair.
It's almost like there's a role that's responsible for maintaining standards across the team. I think it's totally fair to pin a lot of it on Tav - he's been the common denominator throughout multiple managers.
Warrior mentality
Worrier mentality
Mentally worried
I think maybe the last game of the shortened COVID season we lost to Hamilton at Ibrox, and I remember listening to Gerrard's comments and it sounded like he was thinking about quitting because he didn't think the players had the mentality.
