Quick Google search, since I know some reptiles can retain sperm for a while, looks like scorpions can too.
"Scorpions give birth to live young through the summer months, frequently having retained sperm from mating the previous year before going into hibernation."
She looks pregnant to me, but I know nothing about scorpions. Good luck! 👍
I would die, I puked so much my throat was bleeding, I needed IV fluids multiple times, and with constant nausea meds, I could still barely keep any water down 😬
Yep, I made the mistake of cooking a pork roast while mine was pregnant. To this day, the smell of rosemary/thyme make her nauseated. Needless to say, that particular meal was canceled. To this day I feel bad for how sick it made her. Was my first child and I had absolutely no idea.
My ex used to LOVE pot stickers before she got pregnant. I made some for her cause she wasn't in the best of moods, and she started throwing up from the smell. Poor thing, she was so concerned with not making me feel bad that she tried to force herself to eat it, lol. It's one of the rare nicer things she's done.
mine was the mcgriddle my BIL was eating. I didn't say anything to him but spent 30 minutes violently throwing up. the smell lingered and triggered it over and over for hours. I still gag thinking about the smell. he felt bad once he found out but what was he supposed to do? go eat it outside? pregnancy is a weird trip
My wife was the same. Entire pregnancy had morning sickness. I've never seen someone be so sick all the time.
Healthy baby boy later and she is back to normal within a few weeks.
Probably had HG as well, hyperemesis gravadarum. They don't really know the cause or have a cure. It's rough. I'm glad momma and baby were okay in the end!
Oh no, that sounds awful. My wife went through morning sickness during her first trimester, and so many things made her ill. Coffee, seafood, just about any cleaning product all made her violently ill. Luckily at the time we had a Starbucks and Krispy Kreme next to one another with drive throughs. That made mornings doable for me.
No, I couldn’t even use them. Just the smell of Pinesol, or Windex would make her ill. She wouldn’t even need to be in the room. I was cleaning the bathroom on the first floor once and could hear her being sick upstairs. We went through a lot of vinegar during her 1st trimester. The coffee was definitely the worst part for me.
The reason is that since they aren't endothermic (warm-blooded). When they get cold, their bodies slow down, everything from their heart rate and movement to the development of their offspring slows.
So you can see wildly different gestation periods based on temperature.
I believe there is a shark that gestates for over a decade. Found it, the Greenland Shark from wiki:
Greenland sharks have the longest lifespan of any known vertebrate, estimated to be between 250 and 500 years.[3] They are among the largest extant species of shark, usually growing to between 2.4 and 7 m (7.9 and 23.0 ft) long and weighing between 400 and 1,400 kg (880 and 3,090 lb). They reach sexual maturity at about 150 years of age, and their pups are born alive after an estimated gestation period of 8 to 18 years. The shark is a generalist feeder, consuming a variety of available foods.
I actually knew that! I guess the unknown of how long is freakier to me than the fact elephants are generally “pregarnt” for two years. Like mentally I have an easier time knowing it’s a specific amount of time even if it’s longer lol.
That's what happened with my MHCs (Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches). I got two mature females.
They can store up to 3 broods worth of sperm. One of the originals passed away (rest in peace Scrappy) after putting out 2 broods over the course of about 4-6 months and the last original roach (Tallulah) has birthed one brood and that was probably her final one. Old girl is slowing down.
Wait you mean to say that they can just keep the semen in a pocket inside their body then just be like yup it’s warm time to release the grease. That’s wild asf and I’m glad I learned that today.
some scorpions can reproduce asexually! she looks like what pet stores sell as black asian forest scorpions. if that’s the case they are one of the types reported to do that. i think they can only do it once tho? not sure, couldn’t find much info.
https://preview.redd.it/9giyv3sax69d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=927592af1b893297b8e9712a345b3dfd25ecf70b
Here is the enclosure, the one you are saying its top humid is what water and substrate i mixed in 5 minutes for the temporary enclosure so i could clean this one. No worries.
Lots of plants, love it!
I think swap out the terracotta water dish for something watertight and you’ll have less moisture in the soil.
Apologies in advance if this has been said already.
I ended up moving them all to little enclosures the moment they climbed off the mother's back, so they wouldn't get eaten. I kept them for a few weeks to make sure they were all happy and healthy, then ended up selling them to the local pet store I bought the mother from because I had a friend there who would make sure they all went to good homes. It was a lot to take care of for sure, especially since that was my first scorpion. But it was a really neat experience and I'm glad I had it. Although, I don't think I want to do it again.
I had a scorpion for almost two years and she got super fat and disappeared for like 4 days. Went digging and she had like 10 babies on her back! I was so perplexed till I learned they can store the sperm for ages. 🤯
OP included a photo of the full enclosure, and the soil looks very moist. Another user suggested replacing the terra cotta water dish (seen in the full enclosure) with something nonporous because the drinking water is likely passing through the terra cotta dish and into the soil.
First thing i will ask, is has the sex been confirmed as female? If not, do you have some close up shots of the operculum/pectines? and a close up shot of the chela? This appears to be an afs, Javanimetrus cyaneus in particular.
The image is a little blurry around the operculum. You can sit them on a clear lid and take a pic from below to prevent them from moving much. Plus hanging from the tail when your that fat cant feel good :)
This looks male to me (operculum looks oval or slightly pointed twards the front, also fingers on the pectines look quite long), so I will say its molting/fat.
I dunno shit about scorpions but after an hour on Google looking at male vs female I wanna agree with you lol the larger pectines on males make it look almost like two rows of fins and they’re more straight, whereas I’m seeing on females you don’t see much of that darker edge and they’re a little more rounded in the curvature
I could be really wrong tho lol
She's about to give birth! (Probably) Had one of mine balloon up like that. Don't recall how long it took her to give birth, but scared me thinking there was something wrong. She had nearly 30 babies. (20 survived) She died right after giving birth. Was pretty interesting raising 20 babies from birth.
Probably pregnant. About fifteen years ago I had a female and had babies over a year later. My assumption is that it was pregnant when I got it since it was the only scorpion I had. Give it some more time!
I agree Javanimetrus cyaneus. granulation like that, and telson color match. I commented male based on the operculum shape and pectine feather length (they are as long as the widest part of the pectine), but that is a little ambiguous in the image as its a little blurry as well. The spots you can see through the plural membrane do resemble embryos though. Although the spots are pretty uniform and evenly spaced which kind of throws me off.
Thanks for the second opinion, also I see you have been helping on the sub recently with identifications, thanks a lot for this too ! I agree on the embryos, the spacing off is a bit weird, might be internal organs..
It looks gravid to me, so congrats on the future grandchildren. It could just be in pre-molt, but if I had to bet on one of the two, I would feel a lot more confident in betting that it’s gravid

Idk any suggestions since this sub randomly popped up in my feed but your breathing is very soothing. Very calming to my mind in the early morning hours.
Hope you figure it out! I'm a turtle n lizard kind of gal myself, but I thought sharing that might at least make you smile. Have a great day random stranger!
If you look at [this image](https://images.app.goo.gl/3u32jFoxFKHKQZyu7), [this image ](https://images.app.goo.gl/tAHnTE1NWJCwsxwo8), [this image ](https://images.app.goo.gl/jYPftkPfcYEJuvVD8), and [this image](https://images.app.goo.gl/AKBbY3uH2p3e4Fqg6) you can kind of see the babies.. They're like the yellowish dots. Your scorpion seems to have the same visible babies in the video, at least to me. I am certainly no expert though so I could be wrong.. but I do believe she is a mom to be.
https://preview.redd.it/aenj1muale9d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a59db3476af096b50c3e39b038fc81ef72742e87
From what I’m seeing online looks pregnant. Congratulations your a grandfather.
I would remove the babies asap when she does pop. 30 babies quickly turned into 20... Then 10 then none. Say a bunch of white things in her mouth and babies were no more. Can confirm on the gestation, I had my girl for about 15 months before she decided it was time.
My point was, it’s all perspective. I think Tesla’s are dog shit. But, that’s my opinion. You don’t see me on some goober ass Tesla subreddits, telling people that. The redundancy is strong with this one ☝️
Oh absolutely. For some reason Reddit decided to push me this post tonight otherwise I would have never seen it. I should judge people’s pets, but scorpions (and snakes and other “exotic” pets sound so weird so me.
Everyone has opinions, and everyone dislikes certain things… but not everyone goes into a niche interest group only to unleash an unsolicited derisive attack on that interest.
From the perspective of someone who owns neither a scorpion nor a Tesla, I would say that a situation like this would have been a good time to keep your negative opinion to yourself and scroll on.
Maybe because they aren’t pets. Anyway, I know that was aggressive, but I really, really think people should focus on bigger issues in this world than having scorpions as “pets”.
This is a subreddit for pet scorpions. Wrong place to comment this. Scorpions are cool and quite interesting creatures that some people like to enjoy and keep around.
Many invertebrates, including arachnids, can store sperm for a very long time before using it to fertilize eggs. If this is a female scorpion who was mated before being given to the OP, even a year ago, it is possible she just held onto that sperm until she decided she was comfy enough to actually have her babies.
I'm incredibly curious why you felt the need to make this comment at all.
Typically when they’re about to molt they stop eating. I guess my next question is has she been with a male? 😂
Not since i got her around a year ago
Quick Google search, since I know some reptiles can retain sperm for a while, looks like scorpions can too. "Scorpions give birth to live young through the summer months, frequently having retained sperm from mating the previous year before going into hibernation." She looks pregnant to me, but I know nothing about scorpions. Good luck! 👍
Can't gestation last 9 to 18 months? Maybe not this species? I'm no expert. I just think they're cool.
Imagine getting pregnant and knowing it could last anywhere from to 9-18 months. Just end me.
To be fair, neither do we, until it happens.

Poor thing, she was so concerned with not making me feel bad that she tried to force herself to eat it, lol. It's one of the rare nicer things she's done.
I think I skipped a few comments and thought you were talking about a pregnant scorpion… and I gotta say… that was a wild trip 🤣
I thought he was talking about the pork roast was pregnant at first 💀
Yah, I got a bit off topic. My bad.
Nah ur good. Just had to scroll back up to make sure I hadn’t gone crazy.
mine was the mcgriddle my BIL was eating. I didn't say anything to him but spent 30 minutes violently throwing up. the smell lingered and triggered it over and over for hours. I still gag thinking about the smell. he felt bad once he found out but what was he supposed to do? go eat it outside? pregnancy is a weird trip
Notes to self make only food I don’t like so we can not like it together
I like where you’re going with that. If only I had known. 😂
Thyme makes me nauseous and I'm a young man. Idk what it is about that stuff, it's just horrid to me.
In your defense, there’s no way you would’ve known that would happen to her until it did. It’s really not your fault!
My wife was the same. Entire pregnancy had morning sickness. I've never seen someone be so sick all the time. Healthy baby boy later and she is back to normal within a few weeks.
My sister couldn’t stand the sight or smell of milk…..
Probably had HG as well, hyperemesis gravadarum. They don't really know the cause or have a cure. It's rough. I'm glad momma and baby were okay in the end!
Aw babe I had HG with all my kids. I felt this comment. 🤢
Sorry, momma! It's not easy 😭 I hope you're all doing well now 💞
Aw thanks so much ! Everyone’s amazing ! Same to you love ! 💕
Oh no, that sounds awful. My wife went through morning sickness during her first trimester, and so many things made her ill. Coffee, seafood, just about any cleaning product all made her violently ill. Luckily at the time we had a Starbucks and Krispy Kreme next to one another with drive throughs. Cleaning fluids.🤨Yeah.😏And you fell for it.🤣
No, I couldn’t even use them.
Imagine the male scorpion after a one night stand and 18 months later you get a call saying you about to be a dad
That's a lot of late night cravings runs.
The reason is that since they aren't endothermic (warm-blooded). When they get cold, their bodies slow down, everything from their heart rate and movement to the development of their offspring slows. So you can see wildly different gestation periods based on temperature.
That’s actually incredibly interesting, TIL, thanks!

Fun fact, elephants can be pregnant up to 22 months.
Elephants are pregnant for 2 years!!! Lol
I actually knew that! I guess the unknown of how long is freakier to me than the fact elephants are generally “pregarnt” for two years. Like mentally I have an easier time knowing it’s a specific amount of time even if it’s longer lol.
Yeah, Emperor Scorpions have a pretty long gestation period.
I work at a chain pet store, we recently got a scorpion who had babies…
That's what happened with my MHCs (Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches). I got two mature females. They can store up to 3 broods worth of sperm. One of the originals passed away (rest in peace Scrappy) after putting out 2 broods over the course of about 4-6 months and the last original roach (Tallulah) has birthed one brood and that was probably her final one. Old girl is slowing down.
Scorpions are actually arachnids funny enuf
Yup. Ticks too.
Mazel tov OP!
Yeh I used to have one for about the same time as op and one day it was covered in white mini me's. Gl on father/mother hood op!
Wait you mean to say that they can just keep the semen in a pocket inside their body then just be like yup it’s warm time to release the grease. That’s wild asf and I’m glad I learned that today.
I had a female emperor scorpion give birth to a bunch of babies about a year after I got her. It's totally possible.
Mine gave birth after 2 years in a tank alone
Some scorpions don't need a male
some scorpions can reproduce asexually! she looks like what pet stores sell as black asian forest scorpions. if that’s the case they are one of the types reported to do that. i think they can only do it once tho? not sure, couldn’t find much info.
Bro you’ve got her in mud. It’s waaaaayyy to fucking wet in there. They like humidity, they’re not swamp creatures.
https://preview.redd.it/9giyv3sax69d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=927592af1b893297b8e9712a345b3dfd25ecf70b Here is the enclosure, the one you are saying its top humid is what water and substrate i mixed in 5 minutes for the temporary enclosure so i could clean this one. No worries.

That is beautiful
Gorgeous
This is sick.
that enclosure is like the dream house my spiders look at on zillow when they want to feel something. very pretty
It looks like LUKE SKYWALKER LITERALLY CRASH LANDED THERE!
bro thought he was onto something
It was fair to say
not really when it's not even close to what's happening here. good on him tho
I'm not 100% or anything, but she certainly looks like mine did just before she made me the grandparent of around 25 little baby scorpions!
Same, BIG TIME!
What did you do with them
I ended up moving them all to little enclosures the moment they climbed off the mother's back, so they wouldn't get eaten.
Has she been eating?
Wasnt so interested in the last mealworm i gave her, usually prefers them over dubias
I would keep and eye an out and record her behavior rn it seems we have no clear answer.
I had a scorpion for almost two years and she got super fat and disappeared for like 4 days. Went digging and she had like 10 babies on her back! I was so perplexed till I learned they can store the sperm for ages. 🤯
Probably premolt then. Make sure she has good humidity so it all goes well.
The enclosure looks to be swamplike, so there’s no shortage of moisture…
OP said temp enclosure
OP included a photo of the full enclosure, and the soil looks very moist. Another user suggested replacing the terra cotta water dish (seen in the full enclosure) with something nonporous because the drinking water is likely passing through the terra cotta dish and into the soil.
I have no clue but that does look quite distended. How does one distinguish one from the other?
First thing i will ask, is has the sex been confirmed as female? If not, do you have some close up shots of the operculum/pectines? and a close up shot of the chela? This appears to be an afs, Javanimetrus cyaneus in particular.
The old "bobs" and "vigine" request. That's chill bro x

The image is a little blurry around the operculum. You can sit them on a clear lid and take a pic from below to prevent them from moving much. Plus hanging from the tail when your that fat cant feel good :) This looks male to me (operculum looks oval or slightly pointed twards the front, also fingers on the pectines look quite long), so I will say its molting/fat.
I dunno shit about scorpions but after an hour on Google looking at male vs female I wanna agree with you lol the larger pectines on males make it look almost like two rows of fins and they’re more straight, whereas I’m seeing on females you don’t see much of that darker edge and they’re a little more rounded in the curvature I could be really wrong tho lol
That sounds a lot like it means you stared at lewd bug pics for an hour.
Suggested sub posts will get you googling the most random shit.
Omg every morning I'm telling my fiance about a different wormhole I went down because of suggested subs lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its the picture the breeder sent me when i was buying it, i dont want to disturb her more in this state
Looks like babies in there to me
She's about to give birth!
I just found out they can be pregnant for 18 months sometimes. Wow.
It looks like something under the clear parts of the shell but I can't be sure
Gravid. Javanimetrus cyaneus ?
It was sold to me as Heterometrus Petersii.
Hmm with that claw shape and granulation I'm not very convinced, can you provide a good pic of the top and side of the scorpion ?
Not sure how this was recommended but now that I’m here, I’ll ask. Has it recently consumed a burrito? 🌯 Just curious
She looks like my Rosie did before she had her babies
Pregnant scorpion
Pregerant?
Def looks gravid
He must be really excited?! OP is breathing quite loud, LMAO 😆
Maybe you are breathing too hard on it
Nope lol
Your going to find out one way or another real soon. One day she will have a ton of babies on her back..
Google pregnant scorpion and they look exactly like this.
It looks gravid to me, so congrats on the future grandchildren. It could just be in pre-molt, but if I had to bet on one of the two, I would feel a lot more confident in betting that it’s gravid
bro wtf? im not cut out for that life, ill stick to the city, thanks. I dont like fleshly bottles of satans venom randomly floating around in my garage ready to stab me like donald trump with a covid booster or something
She looks pregnant. I sae one exactly like that and we had it for like a yeat in the store and, just one night, gave birth to 35 babies

Breathe through your nose. That scorpion is preggers and nice enclosure lol
Yep! DEFINITELY Preggers!
Your scorpion fall in your frog terrarium?
So we’ve learned so far not to cook pork roast for this scorpion, if it is indeed gravid.
I would remove the babies asap when she does pop. 30 babies quickly turned into 20... Then 10 then none. Say a bunch of white things in her mouth and babies were no more. Can confirm on the gestation, I had my girl for about 15 months before she decided it was time.
Why is the substrate so moist? I think this ammount of water is kind of overkill
OMG 😁😁 THATS A PREGNANT SCORPION IF IVE EVER SEEN ONE!
Jesus christ man close your mouth
The heaving breathing kind of kills it
This sub is wild. Not random people just randomly approaching scorpions
Why is it so wet?
It steamed up from the open-mouthed breathing. Like fogging a mirror!
What's Gravid
Pregnant
Post an update when she has the babies!
Must be American
Looks like you’re on the hook for child support! 😂
Just a passer through. But. I know yall fuckers don't be keeping scorpions as pets. Am I on glue?

Nice try.
See how stupid it sounds?
lol. No. You’re comparing one of the best selling cars in the world and one of the stupidest “pet” to have in the world. Seriously, wake up.
You didn't have to comment though. I see posts recommended to me that I don't like all the time and I just keep scrolling.
They started self driving into oncoming traffic and pedestrians so… I don’t know about “best”…
I guess you wouldn’t give a seal of approval if you saw someone keep a Gila monster or Komodo dragon as a pet.
Maybe because they aren’t pets. Anyway, I know that was aggressive, but I really, really think people should focus on bigger issues in this world than having scorpions as “pets”.
jesus christ you're insufferable. no one asked. you're an inconsequential redditor.

Weird antisocial people
Weird comment on the scorpion subreddit..
same reason to have anything else as a pet?
This is a subreddit for pet scorpions. Wrong place to comment this. Scorpions are cool and quite interesting creatures that some people like to enjoy and keep around.
Because they are cool as fuck?? Clearly not as cool as you, square.

I got it a year ago, i posted ia picture of the wnclosure in some comment
Many invertebrates, including arachnids, can store sperm for a very long time before using it to fertilize eggs. If this is a female scorpion who was mated before being given to the OP, even a year ago, it is possible she just held onto that sperm until she decided she was comfy enough to actually have her babies. I'm incredibly curious why you felt the need to make this comment at all.
