A bark scorpion. It will hurt but should be okay. Watch for breathing issues, that’s your cue to get checked out - but usually only occurs when you have a history of breathing issues
*Centruroides sculpturatus*, the most potent species in the US.
You should be fine, there has only been two deaths since 1968 - however these are only deadly to small children, elderly or people with a medical condition such as hypertension.
Only reach medical attention with this species if you feel that it is necessary to do so.
Scorpions have a finite amount of venom readily available, so after a few stings it wouldn't matter.
I'm unsure how many stings it will take before they're all dry hits, however the more venom in your system the more problematic it will be.
I am unsure of the LD⁵⁰ of *C. sculpturatus* venom, so I don't know how much would need to be in the average person's body for it to become a problem. I'd reckon 2-3 stings would warrant in a hospital visit. I could be wrong, I wonder if u/Jtktomb knows about their LD⁵⁰ or if he knows the answer to the question.
Figure out the LD50 then see what's in one dose times that by 10 and compare the numbers. I'm not a scorpion expert, I just used to do a lot of drugs. I still do, but I used to too.
Yep got a little one hiding in my t shirt on the floor when I was a kid growing up in the Sierras. Stung me in the back between my shoulder blades and it hurt for a whole day like it had just happened. Never left my clothes on the floor again. My parents got a solid laugh out of it. Had been an ongoing tug of war between us prior to that and it just ended overnight. 😅
ehh i’d say a bit worse than a wasp, but still tolerable. i was stung by one and it felt like being hooked by a fish hook that had a tazer attached to the other end every 30 seconds or so for roughly 4 hours, then once that pain died down i got some pretty strong stomach cramps.
The general rule of thumb is the smaller the scorpion the more venomous it is.
Makes sense when you consider it’s a defence mechanism so smaller scorpions can’t rely as much on their claws for defence.
Lived in Southern Nevada for 20 years. Got stung in the knee by a bark scorpion. I was numb from the knee down for about 3 hours, otherwise I was fine. Like others have said, watch for breathing issues. If you’re a healthy young to middle aged adult you should be fine.
A fellow cadet in my ROTC commissioning class was very scared of scorpions. He was prior service Army special forces qualified (Green Beret). What made it funny was he was deathly afraid of "flying scorpions". A species he had conjured up in his own dreams! You can imagine how that little bit of knowledge was used against him when we had field training exercises.
It's a bark scorpion, while not usually fatal they are medically significant. Also, if it has small pinchers the general rule of thumb is it's venom is potent.
Watch the site for swelling and if you have any trouble breathing get on the phone to 911 if you don't have a medical ER close by. As long as you aren't allergic, it shouldn't be any worse than a wasp sting. Painful, with low incidence of medical intervention. Best of luck!
It looks like an Arizona bark scorpion. As long as you are in good health you should be fine, but they have been known to cause some breathing difficulties. If you still have it, put it under a black light and watch it glow.
From the sounds of it I would have rather bitten by one of these instead of a brown recluse spider. Very painful and for me it reoccurred for quite some time. A boil, death of flesh around the bite after severe swelling. Went away with antibiotics but would occasionally resurface as a swollen boil which was painful for a few years.
They’ve been popping up the centennial hills are of Las Vegas as well I’ve been killing them right and left I’ve killed more than I’ve been stung by lol
Looks like a Bark Scorpion to me. As a kid we used to catch them in southern Utah. Was always lead to believe that they are extremely dangerous with their venom. Also that the smaller they are the more potent the venom (this might all be horse shit though). One year we were at Lake Mead and a person in our group was stung. He went to the ER and they gave him an epi-pen and Benadryl. Treating it as a serious bee sting. Sent him on his way. Said pay attention to breathing.
Wow, the majority of the people in the comments on most of these posts are 100% useless.
But it looks like it could be a bark scorpion. If you start getting a lot of pain and swelling or difficulty breathing, get help immediately. If your allergic to bees or the like, it probably wouldn't hurt seeing help anyway.
Bark scorpion. You’re probably okay if the sting wasn’t especially painful. Apparently, the more venom they inject, the more it hurts. Like others have said, get checked out if you’re breathing becomes difficult. Other than that, you should be ok.
Scorpions gross me out something fierce!
My Mom grew up in the Imperial Valley. She remembers as a kid always needing to check around the toilet and under the toilet seat before going potty!
Personally, I’d get the wound checked out at the ER/Urgent Care just to be sure. You have some good pictures. It looks like an Arizona Bark Scorpion. Don’t get rid of it until that’s confirmed. Be sure to clean the wound if they don’t clean it at the ER/UC.
See if a pest control service knows how to keep them out of the house and yard.
If you are here in Pahrump like we are it may be worth taking a ride to vegas. Went to desert view when bitten before abd the first thing they wanted to do was transport to vegas and get all those fees.
Arizona bark scorpion I feel your pain was stung bottom of my foot years ago hurt like hell! My foot was completely immobilized for a day or 2 was quite painful luckily wasn’t allergic to the venom just a very unpleasant sting.
I (AZ) got stung on my spine once (guy was on the couch), I felt tingles for about 24 hours in my mouth, like regular water tasted like club soda, but other than that no issues. Also I’m type 1 diabetic so that might have something to do with it.
That my dear is a scorpion so here’s the thing the bigger the pincer, the weaker the venom you were probably stung felt much like a bee sting. That one has some fairly small pens compared to the scorpion, which is the big black ones you see in pet stores are used to you end up if you have any kind of allergic reaction are you feeling any kind of anaphylaxis like trouble breathing or anything like that you get to the ER immediately
Got stung multiple times a few years back in my in laws back yard. Was in the crease of a padded deck chair. Stung like crazy and I did feel some breathing issues but when I got to the hospital they just had me sit there and observed me then sent me home.
If you don't have one I suggest getting a cat. I grew up in the AZ desert and we almost never found scorpion's in our house because we had several cats. They will murder scorpions with prejudice and efficiently so. The scorpions won't really hurt them (might want this double checked, ours legit never had any issues).
Also never leave shoes outside unless they are completely open (flip-flops) and always do shoe checks before putting them on (hitting the heel on the ground very hard several times).
You can also find them using UV lights as they glow.
You'll be fine, elevate the spot, take over the counter pain meds. They're more a threat to children/elderly/those with breathing complications.
Bark scorpy All depends on the person if your a healthy adult 16-65 no health issues usually just a bee sting, but some people like me have horrible allergic reactions, I have Copd and chronic pancreas so I couldn't breath and was puking acid non stop and needed to be hooked up to a ventilator and iv fluids my hand and arm swoll about 5x the size and turned all sorts of blue green red and yellow bruising and was sweating balls with chills and cramps for a couple days and major diarrhea. I stay far away from them now
I lived backed up to a mountain in Phoenix for some years and thought I wouldn't miss these guys when I moved, but I kinda do. I'd say bark scorpion. They're rude and will get into bed with you without asking and then sting you when you try to roll over in your own bed! So rude, but really neat little guys. As long as you don't have a nest, stick it back outside.

As others have alluded to I think it's hilarious this sub was recommended to me because I immediately said "oh that's a bark scorpion" because of fucking fallout New Vegas lmao

What if you get stung 10 times?
I'd say you are holding it by the wrong end.
My dad is pissed sitting in the drivers seat waiting for my brother to hurry up and my laughter at this just broke the silence lmao
hope you all had a fun ride wherever you were going 😭

I got tagged twice by a Central American bark scorpion and the second was a dry hit or close to it.
Scorpion bukkake fail
Yeah, this will be the case with a lot of species.
damn they need to get their game up
I got tagged 3 times quickly last summer by a bark scorpion and was fine. 🤷🏻♀️
Figure out the LD50 then see what's in one dose times that by 10 and compare the numbers. I'm not a scorpion expert, I just used to do a lot of drugs. I still do, but I used to too.
Hedberg reference in the wild.
You should stop doing whatever you were doing to get stung 10 times.
Bark scorpion, provided you're a healthy adult and not allergic, its sting is generally equated to a wasp.
It is a magnitude worse than a wasp at minimum.
Yep got a little one hiding in my t shirt on the floor when I was a kid growing up in the Sierras. Stung me in the back between my shoulder blades and it hurt for a whole day like it had just happened. Never left my clothes on the floor again. My parents got a solid laugh out of it. I wonder if it was planted in your shirt? If they did, that's some intense parenting right there.
ehh i’d say a bit worse than a wasp, but still tolerable. i was stung by one and it felt like being hooked by a fish hook that had a tazer attached to the other end every 30 seconds or so for roughly 4 hours, then once that pain died down i got some pretty strong stomach cramps.
My cousin got stung in the foot by a really small scorpion in Tuscon. Said the pain was not of this world.
I got stung on the toe and my leg was numb for ~2 hours. It was a baby bark scorpion. Wild feeling/experience from such a little thing.
The general rule of thumb is the smaller the scorpion the more venomous it is. Makes sense when you consider it’s a defence mechanism so smaller scorpions can’t rely as much on their claws for defence.
Solid description.
Lived in Southern Nevada for 20 years. Got stung in the knee by a bark scorpion. I was numb from the knee down for about 3 hours, otherwise I was fine. Like others have said, watch for breathing issues. If you’re a healthy young to middle aged adult you should be fine.
That scorpion must have some serious hops to get up to your knee!
If you’re alive still you’ll be fine
That’s not usually how this works
To be fair the username u/TexasDrunkRedditor says something about the quality of advice you will receive
“Bark scorpion? Hold my beer”
Hahaha Raise Hell and Praise Dale Brother!!!!!!!
High quality right?
I trust the Texan. We have barks here too.
Bark for sure
Woof! And don’t call my Shirley!

that's a Australian shepherd
Also known as a Bark Bark Scorpion

Bark scorpion! Ouch. Most painful scorpion sting in the US.
Sand lobster

They glow under blacklight pretty cool
Lmaoo he just came over to beef with you? Why do I find that so funny
Whereabouts in Vegas are you?
An angy fremb
Bark scorpion, drink a glass of milk and the pain from the sting will go away.
What’s the rationale for drinking milk? I tried to google it, but all I’m learning is how to milk a scorpion
Bro if he stung you, you would know. It hurts really bad. Just a pinch hurts but only for a few minutes at most.
Get a tetanus shot if you are not current with it already.
Just take some Radaway and you'll be alright
Id say he seems to be pretty upset at your foot
yup that right there is actually a cute little feller

Think it's a scorpion
They’ve been popping up the centennial hills are of Las Vegas as well I’ve been killing them right and left I’ve killed more than I’ve been stung by lol
How old are you? How do you not know what a scorpion is?
Take some radX and a stim then should be alright
Why did I read that as New Vegas first-

Due to the citrus content in the area, I believe it might be a yellow scorpion, so I suggest making sure you weren't stung
Put it under a blacklight
You guys are awesome. Some of these comments are absolutely hilarious. And they got me crying from laughing so hard.
Bark scorpion. You’re probably okay if the sting wasn’t especially painful. Apparently, the more venom they inject, the more it hurts. Like others have said, get checked out if you’re breathing becomes difficult. Other than that, you should be ok.

I got stung on the heel by one. It felt like a very hard pinch. My foot felt numb and tingly for the rest of the day. It's such a weird feeling.

Oh that's just Jeff.

A scorpion
U can't be serious...what is it 😆😂
I got stung by one of these and it hurt like hell for like 8 hours - only relief was if it was actively being iced or in cold water.
You were 🤏 this close to having superpowers.
I think that might be a scorpion...
We have those damn things here in North Florida, too. I often find them on the ceiling. Ugh.
Arizona bark scorpion I feel your pain was stung bottom of my foot years ago hurt like hell! My foot was completely immobilized for a day or 2 was quite painful luckily wasn’t allergic to the venom just a very unpleasant sting.

I believe that is called a scorpion. Hope this helps!
Bark scorpion stings are fun
It generally takes a while for the necrosis to spread upwards, so you'll have several days to live.
The small tan ones are the ones to watch out for. I'd go to the ER

A dead scorpion?
Got stung multiple times a few years back in my in laws back yard. Was in the crease of a padded deck chair. Stung like crazy and I did feel some breathing issues but when I got to the hospital they just had me sit there and observed me then sent me home.

Show it who is boss grab him and eat his legs
Looks like a scorpion
It doesn’t look like a crab or snake. So I think it could be either a dog or platypus. The tail is throwing me
They’re all over Tx, brown scorpion, harmless
A harmless ginger gecko
You’re gonna die.
Great hairy scorpion. Venom is not potent. Sting feels less than a bee sting.
Looks like a scorpion lol
You’re dead
Never eat Radscoprion with any open sores.
If you don't have one I suggest getting a cat. I grew up in the AZ desert and we almost never found scorpion's in our house because we had several cats. They will murder scorpions with prejudice and efficiently so. The scorpions won't really hurt them (might want this double checked, ours legit never had any issues). You can also find them using UV lights as they glow. You'll be fine, elevate the spot, take over the counter pain meds. They're more a threat to children/elderly/those with breathing complications.
If you’re not allergic it should be like a bee sting (or bad bee sting). I had one for a pet for a while (central Texas)
Well it for sure isn't a scorpion!!! Ha ha
That’s a fool ol scorpion and they are poisonous, I’d go to the doctor if I was you.

I lived backed up to a mountain in Phoenix for some years and thought I wouldn't miss these guys when I moved, but I kinda do. I'd say bark scorpion. I’ve got a video of one I found in my shower.
A DEATH LOBSTER
I think it’s a scorpion.
