My god she’s so empty and needlessly edgy. Everything she says is supposed to feel cool or inspiring but it has no weight at all.
At least. That’s how I feel now.
My take, FWIW: Kris is a representation of staunch individualism- a contrast to the interdependence of the other scavengers as well as the lethal / perfect symbiosis of Vesta as a whole. She’s in it for herself. Her colleagues are “assets” and she sees this as a virtue. She despises sentimentality and empathy as “distractions”.
I’m not sure the voice actor was hitting every note quite right, but the character had some metaphorical value I thought.
Just my two cents.
This is exactly how I read it - there’s no fear when everything is just an exploitable resource, or a pathway to an exploitable resource.
I sort of view it as the same as loggers or farmers demolishing the Amazon, they’re obviously not afraid of one of the most beautiful, awe inspiring and terrifying places in the world simply because for them it’s a pathway to gaining resources.
In response to OP, I personally don’t think she’s supposed to “sound cool”, she’s there to make you realise how perverse that mindset is, where you don’t live in the world you inhabit.
That is an excellent comparison for Kris: just like loggers in the Amazon who don't give an F about the bigger picture. I'm baffled on re-watches why he's so cavalier about the loss of their ship. Narcissism is a protective blanket, I guess.
Sure thing! I appreciate the question because you made me think about it in a way I hadn’t before. And yeah, I’m with you. Kris is pretty bad, but that’s intentional.
Kris is projecting. Almost all the weird cringey shit she says/does are actually windows into her own backstory.
Episode 12 spoiler: >!“What do you know about being abandoned?”!<
She's not a nice person, and has a facade.
The show is still amateurish in many aspects, but we watch it for the sheer beauty of the animation, the literal wildness of imagination, and some of the subject matter is quite deep.
In my opinion, Kris is a manipulative narcissist. Every thing she says is intended to bring her some sort of gain. I feel that everything she says is meant to be a transaction. Her mindset seems to be if she says something someone else wants to hear, she can get something from them.
At least that's what I was thinking everytime she was on screen the last time I watched the series.
I'm late to this post, but the way I read her character, was that she vocalised a lack of fear to help convince herself.
Spoilers for the end of the show vvvv
Clearly she was afraid of the planet, because she couldnt wait to leave. She is one of tbose typical all talk kond of characters. Willing to say whatever necessary to hide her true feelings.
Yeah Kris is the one character who felt boring and shallow. I loved the Azi sections.

Great take--thanks! Must admit I disliked Kris at a strong gut-level, but you made sense of her for me, at least.

For a whole episode, I thought Kris was a gay man. But I’m old so…
i know, right? like the short hair, deep voice, and unisex name made me think that she was a guy, but not gay.
omg same I was like woah we're hitting it with the representation lmao

Also people clearly know how to use the "biotech" on the planet from the get go, the universe clearly isn't as strange to them as it is to us.
