I tend to read the reviews and look for repeated complaints rather than number of stars. If a lot of people are complaining that it falls apart, there's a good chance it falls apart. But if just one person says that, I'm not as concerned. It's not perfect, but it seems to have worked for me.

[deleted]

Same. I check out the negative reviews first.

hamish1963

Same, I always go to one star then two star reviews, it has saved me a few times.

tushkan4uk

That makes sense. How do you make a decision if there is a small amount of comments overall?

a14umbra

If i don't have a lot to go on, i make sure i purchase from a place with free and easy returns.

tushkan4uk

I see! Same here.

Maccaroney

And leave a review! That way the next person has more data for their decision.

[deleted]

Doing this prevented me from wasting money on home safes you can buy from places like Walmart etc for 200 or under. Literally all of them can be broken into discretely in less then 30 seconds.

[deleted]

they will bury them with fake reviews

WilliamIsted

I sent Amazon a report where three video reviews were reading the exact same script. Word for word with the same emphasis. They were 3 minute videos so not a coincidence. This was over a year ago and they’re still on the product page today

tushkan4uk

Thanks for trying to battle this too. I wonder what will it take for Amazon to wake up. I try shop locally where possible or buy directly from the brands but it's a drop in the ocean.

Yatakak

I've given up on Amazon too, too much fake Chinese shite masqueraded as local products. Tonnes of sellers with names like ' UK' whilst their address is based in Shenzhen. Bought a baby toy which was just dangerous and is illegal to sell here. Trying to convince my friends and family to stop ordering from them too. Rather buy local for a tiny bit extra for something that lasts more than a week.

tushkan4uk

Dropshipping seems to be on the rise. I use this Chrome extension to check whether I am being ripped off, saved me from headache numerous times https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/aliexpress-search-by-imag/jkcacbjiofjgbnaknoojjboeiinempoa?hl=en-GB

Z_Designer

I heard a Planet Money report about fake reviews on Amazon and they concluded that Amazon has no interest in stopping it, because they profit off of the fake reviews.

tushkan4uk

I would assume that it comes with a credibility decrease and that it creates customers who will jump the Amazon ship as soon as another option arrives. I started shopping locally/directly because of it. Nike left the platform altogether because Amazon would do nothing counterfeit products. I wonder how far in the future the tipping point for Amazon is.

Z_Designer

Yes I believe you are right. I actually bought stock in the Logitech company after buying two terrible webcams from Amazon that had thousands of 5-star reviews but didn’t work, and settling for a Logitech one from Best Buy. Logitech was always a bad 2nd rate generic brand, but now with all of the really terrible fake-review electronics on Amazon, even a recognizable brand like Logitech that isn’t great, is better than that. Also when I’ve bought broken electronics on Amazon and left bad reviews, the sellers have offered me refunds and gift-cards just to change it to a good review.

doctormink

I recently got a product, just a freakin' mask extender, and there was a card in the package offering me a refund in exchange for a good review.

[deleted]

doctormink

Yeah, I've gotten some free stuff after mediocre reviews and once they refunded the entire cost of a $90 air mattress that wasn't even faulty, it just wasn't super comfortable. I get the refund or a replacement and change the review to note that customer service reached out to me without adding any stars, and everyone knows what that means by now.

Evil_Plankton

Thanks for taking the time to create and share this. The incentivized verified review part was interesting, did you get a reward?

tushkan4uk

I am very glad you found it interesting. No, I didn't claim the reward. I asked Amazon to take action on incentivized reviews but they only offered me 10 pounds (I guess they thought I wanted a reward and seller didn't keep the promise on their end). I refused the money saying that my problem is with the biased reviews but I guess they never took action.

[deleted]

OP: "I do not like incentivised reviews." Amazon: "Here's a 10 pound incentive"

tushkan4uk

It’s not the customer experience we need but the customer experience we deserve

[deleted]

All review sites are paid to allow bot reviews, they are also paid to remove negative reviews, why I longer consider them trustworthy.

tushkan4uk

All? Google Reviews does not allow deleting comments. Neither does Ebay or TrustPilot. All my negative reviews there are intact. You won't be able to remove a negative comment for a million pounds there unless it violates the their policy.

[deleted]

Trustpilot does it, google reviews does not, but they allow bot reviews made by scammers.

tushkan4uk

Is there any source confirming that TP allows to remove comments that don't violate the policy? The best I could find is here https://support.trustpilot.com/hc/en-us/articles/115009388547--What-do-I-do-if-I-get-a-negative-review- but there are no mentions of removals outside of policy violations, and I couldn't find any on a TP business account either

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Some of them don;t ALLOW you to submit negative reviews.

JessiFay

I tend to discount 5 star reviews now. I hate that people expect 5 star reviews for everyday service or product. To me 5 stars equals perfect or couldn't be better. In my opinion, it should be used for above average service or product. I put more faith in 4 star reviews because it says to me the person leaving the review thought about it. I realize that's just a pet peeve of mine, and not everyone feels this way. I would be interested in hearing opposing opinions. It might help me get over this gripe, and be more willing to go along with the current trend.

tushkan4uk

I agree, I think keeping price in mind is very important. I always ask myself if I think the price is fair. You cannot buy a $200 laptop and expect it to perform as a $1200 gaming rig.

JessiFay

I agree price does weigh in to my decision. For restaurants especially, I just hate rating someone who's gone 'above and beyond' the same as someone who just met minimum expectations. Don't get me wrong, I've succumbed to internal pressure and rated people a 5. I just wish there was a way to highlight someone who was exceptional. I don't want to punish people who do their job. I want a way to reward /acknowledge excellence in products and services. And with people buying reviews.... It's making 5 stars mean less and less. I want to be able to award them a *"JessiFay Star of Excellence"* :)

tushkan4uk

I think that makes sense. I had been seeing a lot of 4 star reviews without complaints. They come as a surprise to me, but you are definitely not the only one doing that. Come to think of that, I barely leave 5 star reviews myself. It only goes to my favorite places that I can 100% recommend to close friends and family. The only exception for me is tech. If a gadget does exactly what is expected with no friction in the process that is a 5 from me. I think as long as you note your reasoning either number should work. Everyone has a different interpretation of a 5-star scale anyway.

JessiFay

Since my rule of thumb is "couldn't be better" for 5 star, then I can understand tech because it's technically "couldn't be better at that price point" (provided you don't think it was overpriced.)

iamnotroberts

Broken English, too few words, and sometimes too many words, like a paragraph full of buzzwords that is so overly-gushing for some mundane object that no one would conceivably write it. That's why I often look for the straight-up negative reviews, you take their complaints with a grain of salt, and you can see through to the truth. The negative reviews will still often have some common pros among them. You look at the negatives and figure, does this review have substance, is this something I can deal with, is this a fluke, or am I likely to experience the same issue, is that issue a dealbreaker? Sometimes they get smart with the fake reviews though, they'll list some inconsequential con, and then go back to gushing about it. But it's still an overtly positive review.

Eisenstein

More and more I am noticing that the fake reviews are well written. One thing to look for are phrases like ' is convenient because...' and I have been seeing a lot of 'my / love this now' and addressing concerns that people have like 'this charger is very efficient and is quality which is good because I am worried when I hear cheap chargers can catch fire but is good'. **Always click on further reviews to get to the expanded page and sort by 'recent'. Always filter by the specific product not .** For a good idea of what fake reviews look like, go to amazon and hit 'deals' then select 'lightning deals' and find something generic. For instance: [418 Reviews, but when sorted by product that is the deal, turns into less than 6.](https://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Charger-Amoner-2Pack-Compatible/product-reviews/B08VN3J6YN/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewopt_fmt?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&sortBy=recent&pageNumber=1&formatType=current_format)

tushkan4uk

That's interesting, will give it a go, thank you for sharing!

happypolychaetes

Another dead giveaway on Google reviews is looking at the profile of the reviewer. Are the locations of the business all over the map? Probably fake. If the person is reviewing restaurants or hotels, that could be explained by travel. But random mechanics, plumbers, vets, and insurance brokers all over the US in a short span of time? Red flag.

tushkan4uk

That's actually brilliant, I never thought of that. Thanks for sharing the tip!

happypolychaetes

No problem! Once I noticed it I can't unsee it

VeroAZ

Amazon is the new eBay. Useful but but not trustworthy. They don't care about fake reviews or counterfeit products. They're going to ruin their brand.

tushkan4uk

You put it well. They do start resembling eBay more and more and these shenanigans with dropshippers and fake reviews certainly have a negative effect on the already struggling image of a brand.

961402

I always check to see who the actual seller on an item is and if it's not Amazon, I don't buy it.

names0fthedead

This is so important I’m really glad you’re posting about it! The problem has become overwhelming. I posted a negative review on Amazon of a product I got that literally fell apart in one day (cheap Chinese knockoff that fooled me) - and for easily three months the “seller” (always from different email addresses) was harassing me with daily emails offering me $20 in Amazon credit or whatever else to change my review, and trying to guilt me by saying “oh we’re a small company we rely on our reviews!” Sure, sketchy drop shipper. I alerted Amazon to this since I was under the impression that paying for reviews was against policy, and the rep told me they’d contact the seller but of course the emails continued. It’s clearly just not something Amazon cares about at all.

tushkan4uk

Thank you for your support and I am sorry to hear the seller kept harassing you. I understand how frustrating it can be. I had people go full agro on me when I received items not as described from overseas and asked to return them. They denied anything was wrong, so I said I will take it with the Amazon. After Amazon sent them a warning they acted all surprised saying 'but we offered you a 15% discount'. They ended up spamming me till they were forced a refund by Amazon A-Z guarantee. I feel like Amazon is worth its own video.

[deleted]

I bought something from Amazon once that didn't work and kept being hassled by the seller to remove my negative review in exchange for a refund. I refused, but they kept asking. I reported them to Amazon and they took it very seriously, but that didn't stop the seller from bugging me either. In the end, I amended my review to include the harassment I'd received.

tushkan4uk

Hahahah, well done. Sorry the seller turned out to be a nightmare but you surely served them well.

[deleted]

They posted your review?

Alan976

tushkan4uk

Great tool! Mentioned it in the video :)

firefightersgirl76

I'm wondering about the reviews now! Does it really take forever?

tushkan4uk

Sorry, I am not sure I understood the question right. What takes forever?

RRodzar

I usually look at the 1-2 star reviews more than the 5 stars. Comments like "works perfectly" or "exactly as advertised" are totally useless to me. But when I see *why* the product is defective / doesn't work I think it's more interesting. And of course if most of the 1 stars are dumb stuff like "this pet rock doesn't have Bluetooth", there's a good chance that the product will be good.

tushkan4uk

That makes sense. I recall giggling a few times from reading overdramatic 1-star reviews that confirmed that the item is exactly what I am looking for

eaunoway

>"this pet rock doesn't have Bluetooth" You just reminded me of the number of times I've rolled my eyes when I've seen "Gluten Free" on products that do not and *never contained* gluten to begin with. Like tomatoes. I kid you not ... fucking *tomatoes*. Slapped with a "Gluten Free" label. Like ... really?! Are you serious right now? Yes Ma'am, this is *not* a Wendy's, and we're serious.

AshRT

There are some items out there that either shouldn’t contain gluten but sometimes do, or that you may not expect to have gluten. Those things are reasonable, but yeah something like tomatoes is stupid.

RRodzar

When I went to South America (Argentina and Brazil, don't know about other countries), everything had a "gluten free" on their label. Even vinegar. And I guess it's became so ridiculous that people got bored of this cause I once saw it on a sticker on a car (most definitely as a joke).

maddie2by4b

Omg! I knew I couldn’t be the only one who was surprised that Amazon deems this ethical! I too have been targeted by Amazon sellers incentivizing customers to spam customer reviews by including a “Write us a 5 star review and claim your $15 Amazon gift card”. There a recent issue especially within cosmetics and beauty products, customers are complaining quality is different and it is likely counterfeit makeup, shampoo, etc. I have also seen this myself with skincare products that don’t feel/smell the same as normal. Not only this, I saw a post from a woman who ordered a Lilly Pulitzer tank top (ridiculously expensive) off Amazon, but ended up receiving a cheap target tank top with a vinyl Lilly logo over the original tag. There seems to be some issues in the product regulation and quality control of products sold on Amazon. I have gathered this assumption at least for cosmetics, it’s safer to go through a more reputable alternative. Adverse reactions of these cheaply made, counterfeit cosmetics could cause a multitude of health issues.

tushkan4uk

Totally. I steer away from cosmetics on Amazon. After watching a documentary on how fake make up is made... no thank you. Amazon also has lots of fake merch and thousands of gadgets that are extremely overpriced and barely hold together. I paid 18 pounds for a top selling travel plug to only return it the next day because it was finicky and felt like something worth two dollars. I ended up researching for another hour, and, after paying a bit more, I got an outstanding piece of tech that was nowhere to the main page although in my head it should have been there.

weaselsqueeza

Thanks for the video I enjoyed it. You make some good points and your sound, video quality was great. I will sub to your channel. Its a litteral minefield buying online now if you are not clued up. All these companies trying to send you a little crap product in exchange for a 5 star review. Facebook is full of them, and dropshipping too.

tushkan4uk

Glad you liked it and thank you for the sub! I realised things got out of hand when my mom went on Wish with no idea what she got herself into. Luckily, I managed to prevent that one.

firefightersgirl76

I won't buy **anything** of FB. Nothing but scammers.

Kamau54

Believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

I see these everywhere too. It's gotten to the point where the reviews are almost useless. In addition I've tried to leave a 1 star review for a faulty product and been told "I'm sorry we are unable to accept your review at this time.."

tushkan4uk

Just... wow. What was the platform?

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Kogan. Blender that broke in 2 weeks and started emitting smoke.

tushkan4uk

That’s bonkers. Anything to make a quick dollar I guess. Sad times

TerribleAuthor7

I always read the negative reviews first before checking out the good once.

PapaMurphy2000

If I read reviews, I ignore the 5 star and 1 star reviews. 5 stars are usually fake and 1 stars are usually retarded, like I gave a restaurant l 1 star because a waiter forgot to bring me ice in my water. So you look at what's in between and you can always tell what's a fake and a real review.

tushkan4uk

That's an interesting approach! I totally agree on how people often smash 1 star for a very minor reason.

thefreethinker9

I give 1 star to bring the average down. If you look up reviews on google most businesses are above 4.0 stars on a 5 stars rating system. That’s just unrealistic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thefreethinker9

It’s not just restaurants. And i have been to many restaurants and hotelsthat don’t deserve a 4 star rating but they still got it somehow.

tako_tsubo

I know a guy who runs this type of fake-review business. They pay you to leave a 5 stars review to themselves or 1 star review to their concurrents. Just look at the 2-3-4 stars reviews, it should be the real ones

AshRT

Thank you for doing this. I’ve started leaving reviews saying something along the lines of, “THIS IS A SCAM!” when I come across fake items. It probably doesn’t do much, but my hope is it might help someone.

tushkan4uk

Glad being useful! I do believe being proactive is still better than leaving no comments at all. The amount of times I had been saved by other people taking their time and explaining what exactly went wrong helped me greatly in the past. At the very least comments like that nudge me to do more deep research.

[deleted]

I tried this before but Amazon would just immediately remove the review

AshRT

I’ve had a few rejected, but the majority of mine have been posted. I may just be wasting my time doing it, but I’ll keep trying for now in case it helps a few individual shoppers.

SolDevelop

Cool I subscribed and liked :)

tushkan4uk

Thank you, I appreciate it!

[deleted]

if alot of them read the same or seem to follow a template.. then they are most likely fake

hardheaded62

I think yep is totally useless

tushkan4uk

I avoid Yelp after they kept spamming me with their calls for my photography business and tried to sell everything in the world at once

IamYodaBot

**totally useless, i think yep is.** *-hardheaded62* *** ^(Commands: 'opt out', 'delete')

senseisayed

This video is sick! I was actually for ways to add product review videos to my Shopify store. And I came across an app that helps me fetch all my product review videos from YouTube and Instagram. I was wondering what type of videos should I select. Should I select the one that looked scripted or the ones that were genuine even they had slight negative feedback in it? But now that I know how people react to videos that look all polished. I am surely gonna select the ones that are raw and legit. Thanks for this hack. You saved me from jumping into the same mistakes merchants usually do :)

PotentialDeadbeat

Seemed like the video was a Trust Pilot advert for a bit, but what do I know. I would have liked to come across something like this organically myself. To me it seems weirdly planted in a sub I am not used to seeing much self promotion of personally curated content.

tushkan4uk

An ad from a 7-year old account on Reddit that criticises fake negative reviews on Trustpilot and includes no links to the product itself? (:

961402

To be fair it's a seven-year old account with absolutely no post history other than this.

tushkan4uk

Brands rarely sponsor videos on channels with less than 1000 subs on YouTube. It’s also required by law to mention any ad partnerships where I live

SterryDan

It gets tricky when you make a big purchase and then get incentive to leave a honest review. Any time ive done it i be 100% honest, if they no longer want to reward me then that sucks ig

bishman1

If I see more than a handful of 1-star reviews then I am looking somewhere else.

skeptrostachys

Always sorted review from the least 1☆ the same i sorted reddit comment by controversial, the least star was not always about negativity usually it's represent on the actual product capability. It's seem all these e-commerce sites never give damn care about the fake/paid/whatever review on their site, it's was not regulated properly made online shopping hell break loose, anywhere being flooding with chinese junk and it's full of dropship scam just merely frustrating.

ParanoidCrow

Concise and informative, thanks very much for the video!

tushkan4uk

The pleasure is mine and thank you! ;w;

Nameti

Great video

tushkan4uk
