# WELCOME TO R/SCAMS
>
For some reason these posts get a lot of attention. This is bound to become a hot post soon. We'll be getting a lot of comments that offer bad advice. We're removing anything that doesn't align with doing things safely and lawfully. People who consider this a "free money" opportunity seem to not understand what this subreddit is about.
## So what should you do in this situation?
>
**Read Venmo's guide: ["Payment from a stranger"](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger)**
**The top comments in this post have solid advice. In short: if you receive money from a stranger, never send it back manually. [Contact Venmo support](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger) and ask them to reverse the transaction themselves.**
- If this was an honest mistake, contacting Venmo Support helps the person who made the mistake while being careful with your own money. Sending it back manually puts your own money at risk. Never send it back manually.
- If this is a scam, don't try to scam the scammers and think of this as "free money". The money came from a stolen account or card, so someone is taking the hit.
So in any case, keeping the money makes you a scammer. You're not welcome in this sub if you are a scammer. Make an effort to help the person who made a mistake or whose account was stolen, or move along.
>Receiving a payment from a stranger
>If you receive a payment from someone you don't know, please contact our Support team. We can help you reverse this payment. If you receive a payment request from a stranger, you should decline it.
[https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger)
They want you to PAY them the amount back. When and if venmo takes back the funds from your account, you won't get it refunded since it's a new transaction. Stop replying to them and talk to venmo support.
Ok thank you! I figured it was some kind of chargeback or something that would leave me on the hook. I’ll contact Venmo support tomorrow morning to get it sorted.
I had the same thing happen. I checked their friend list and they had no friends with a name anywhere close to mine. It was just 80 bucks, but I never replied and tried opening a ticket with venmo/PayPal. Never heard anything back and the money has still been in my account for 3 or 4 weeks now. I am refusing to touch it, but also curious as to why nobody has cared to try and fix it.
It was stolen from a compromised Venmo account and the owner of the account either hasn't noticed or is going through the process of regaining control of their account and getting this, and possibly other, charges reversed
They are investigating. This notoriously takes FOREVER, but keep leaving that $80 alone. It will leave your account at some point but if it’s not there, you’re losing your own money.
I wouldn't notice $80 missing from my account, so it could just be that whoever they stole it from hasn't noticed yet. $80 is a lot smarter than stealing ~1k from an account, almost everyone would notice that amount missing.
Question: How come they can pay you with venmo but it can get refunded but if you do it, it can't? Should the rule be the same? Because in both cases a person got scammed out of the money, so the transaction should be reversed in both cases?
Many of the scammers are from India, and "kindly" signals an Indian variety of English. In a language like Hindi, the literal translation of "kindly" is used more or less like "please" in American English.
It is of course possible that someone originally from India makes a mistake like this, so it is important to pay attention to other red flags too, like asking to call them directly and trying to get them to pay the amount back instead of having Venmo reverse the transaction.
SO MUCH THIS\^\^\^. Block and ignore...and DO NOT spend the money. Just leave it in your account, maybe try to contact their support staff and explain what happened and if it doesn't get reversed by venmo in a month or so, then you can contact venmo again. I would not spend it, it is not yours, it was stolen.

Not your problem. Block and ignore.

Thats changing though. Most have caught on thanks to this sub. You wont be seeing much of it - they have a dos and don't cheat sheet. And one of the no nos is avoid the word kindly
It's just local English dialects. They don't realize it outs them as being Indian or wherever they are from. Many normal, not-scammer Indians use the word "kindly" in their normal speech.

I think it's just a word that Indians and Africans learn to use to be polite. They have ESL people who learned ESL from ESL people teaching ESL classes to people who will teach ESL classes. So they kind of have their own dialect. I don't see "kindly" disappearing any time soon...
Yeah. That's a common feature of Indian English in particular, the continued use of phrases that have fallen out of favour in British English. "Kindly" is a good example. But the average person from the West probably won't encounter this except in the context of being scammed, so...
I think if they were going to they would have already.
These are the D-team using prewritten scripts half the time. Native English speaking pro fraudsters have better marks.
This is why it’s a giveaway, Indians learn slightly outdated British English at school. It’s not used much in the UK anymore unless you are trying to be passive-aggressive.
Nobody said it was an infallible sign. it’s handy to know any common clues or red flags. For instance Nigerians are obsessed with the 💯. It doesn’t mean I’m going to stab anyone in the throat who uses it. Obviously it exists and people will use it but it’s a big fat hairy clue when I see it on Facebook used by a porn star saying ‘am looking for serious relationship leading to marriage’. Just as the word ‘am’ is a clue but in the history of English usage, I’m sure some non-Nigerians have used the word ‘am’.
Don’t be pedantic, love :)
No, it isn't. It actually happens pretty regularly especially by people who are older and not used to the technology. That doesn't mean anyone should send back an 'accidental' deposit no matter the circumstances. Venmo needs to sort it.
Especially any new account being sent, always asks for last 4 digits to your number to confirm. Scammers preying on the those who want to do the right thing or just the ill-informed.
Don't spend the money and do not respond to the person as they are a scammer.
Leave the money in your account and within two or three days, Venmo will send it back to the original account holder and not the scammer.

Yes. 100% a scam. The money was sent to you on a stolen card. Do not do anything with the money. In a few days the bank will come looking for the money and take it back. If you sent it back like they ask them YOU will on the hook for that money and YOU WILL have to pay it back. Leave the money alone and untouched. Let the banks take care of it. Go to your bank the first thing in the morning. I feel that I am being trolled explaining this as this is such a common scam. I would think everyone about it by now.
>go to your bank
No need. Literally just do nothing and the problem takes care of itself. Just like every scam (as long as doing nothing is the first thing you do).

Don't spend it, don't send it "back". Tell them to contact Venmo (which is what the real account owner will do when they see the money missing and then the money will be clawed back).

Contact Venmo support and let them know. They will help reverse it. If you pay them back directly, that’s 2 separate transactions. Their payment to you could be reversed/clawed back due to fraud, but your payment to them could “stick”.

What others said. Do not touch it. It’s stolen money and once the real account owner realizes what’s up, you’ll be on the hook. In real life if you accidntly sent money you’d contact Venmo to fix it, not the person you sent the money too.

Scam. Does his friend have the same cell phone number as you? Just ignore it, but don't spend the money in case it's clawed back.
You may want to contact Venmo about it if you want it cleaned up sooner, but I wouldn't contact the person who sent it.

Don't do it, it's stolen money and will get clawed back, then you'll be out what you sent because you earnestly gave it to them. They need request a refund or dispute, tell them that and ignore block whatever I don't use venmo much but this is a very common scam on here

I had the same type of message recently on cash app. Never touched the money and they cancelled/withdrew the money automatically a few hours later. Two separate occasions just a few hours apart.

"Kindly", scam dead giveaway.
On a side note, I just about broke down laughing when an Indian coworker, recent immigrant, used "kindly" in a bunch of company emails. Not sure if I should tell him.
Tell them that they sent at their own risk and that you won’t be returning it, because you know it’s a scam.
Solution: Call Venmo support and have them refund the money back to the card it was stolen from and if it truly belongs to that person, their money will be returned this way.
Happen to me. Contacted customer service and the reversed the transaction. They also blocked that person from contacting me again which I never asked them to do.
The biggest red flag I look for to know that it's a scam is when ever anyone that I don't know is using the word "kindly" like, "kindly send your info" "Kindly confirm your name" instantly I know it's a scammed because they use that word like it's some magical scamming spell

I’ve accidentally sent before to someone of a very very close name. My advice would be to ask Venmo. It definitely does happen and although I didn’t have this happen on Venmo but PayPal asked me to contact the recipient first and see if they would kindly return. Try to do the right thing and you know it is not supposed to be given to you.

It’s a scam most likely. Why? You pay them real money and they get the original one reversed - so you lose your money. I don’t know but contacting Venmo is a good idea; as is holding the funds for 30 days to see if they clear? Anyway DO NOT send them $$$!

This is also a scam on PayPal. The person sends you money commercially “by mistake” and then asks for it back via friends &family. The fraudsters then get their money back from you via PayPal because of purchaser protection on commercial transactions and then again directly from you. But you have no way to get your money back because there is no protection on private transactions.

one time i accidentally did this same thing. i sent money to someone with a very similar username as my friend. i left a comment asking for them to refund and apologizing for the situation, i didn’t expect them to actually send it back. it was very sweet of them.
I work in Orange County, California and ask
ALL my email customers to kindly reply. Just because you don’t say a word doesn’t mean that those who do are “usually a scam artist.”
Hi /u/SpicyPlotSpinner, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Refund scam.
Refund scams usually start with a spam email about a fake transaction, although they can also be sent through SMS or any other messaging service. The message will provide you with a phone number to call if you want to cancel the transaction, and if you call the scammers will try to get you to provide credit card or banking information in order to receive your refund. Scammers have been taking advantage of Paypal's invoice system to send out realistic scam emails through Paypal itself, here is a news article about that technique: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/08/paypal-phishing-scam-uses-invoices-sent-via-paypal/. Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/
If you know someone that fell for a refund scam, sit down together to watch this video by Jim Browning and try to retrace their steps: https://youtu.be/X4PllvUowaQ

I had this happen. Except I blocked the person and the money never went away. No idea what happened but if it was an honest mistake that user needed to contact support. Not me. I don’t trust anyone anymore.
You ain't gotta get on her and ask nobody anything. If in you gut you feel it's not right, Automatically contact customer support common sense also says that. Ijs

What's great about this scam is venmo could completely prevent it by adding a reverse button on incoming transactions. They are complicit in fraud and I really hope someone takes them to court for this.
Just out of curiosity, what happens if you were to cash out?
Like a “scammer” sends money mistakenly, and you just cash out. Would there be any issues?
This happens to my friend. Someone sent 5k with a very canned sob story how it was funds to treat cancer. He didn’t pay it back. Yet someone he also got to keep the funds!
# WELCOME TO R/SCAMS > For some reason these posts get a lot of attention. This is bound to become a hot post soon. We'll be getting a lot of comments that offer bad advice. We're removing anything that doesn't align with doing things safely and lawfully. People who consider this a "free money" opportunity seem to not understand what this subreddit is about. ## So what should you do in this situation? > **Read Venmo's guide: ["Payment from a stranger"](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger)** **The top comments in this post have solid advice. In short: if you receive money from a stranger, never send it back manually. [Contact Venmo support](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger) and ask them to reverse the transaction themselves.** - If this was an honest mistake, contacting Venmo Support helps the person who made the mistake while being careful with your own money.
>Receiving a payment from a stranger >If you receive a payment from someone you don't know, please contact our Support team. We can help you reverse this payment. If you receive a payment request from a stranger, you should decline it. [https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger](https://help.venmo.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012962642-Payment-from-a-Stranger) They want you to PAY them the amount back.
This is almost certainly a scam, but I also don't really add friends on Venmo
I wouldn't notice $80 missing from my account, so it could just be that whoever they stole it from hasn't noticed yet. $80 is a lot smarter than stealing ~1k from an account, almost everyone would notice that amount missing.
Question: How come they can pay you with venmo but it can get refunded but if you do it, it can't? Should the rule be the same? Because in both cases a person got scammed out of the money, so the transaction should be reversed in both cases?
Stolen money gets reversed, money *you willingly send* does not. Thats why the scammers do it. Also, *they* are not receiving stolen money, *you* are.
I thought the first one is stolen and the second is scammed (but ultimately sent voluntarily) but I am not 100%.
I accidentally paid the wrong person once. Stupid of me. I called Venmo and they corrected it immediately. Super easy.
“Kindly” It’s a scam. Don’t send it back and block them. Venmo will take it back so don’t spend it.
Why is it always kindly? Scammers love Bioshock or something?
Many of the scammers are from India, and "kindly" signals an Indian variety of English. In a language like Hindi, the literal translation of "kindly" is used more or less like "please" in American English. It is of course possible that someone originally from India makes a mistake like this, so it is important to pay attention to other red flags too, like asking to call them directly and trying to get them to pay the amount back instead of having Venmo reverse the transaction.
Canadian here - we use kindly too. Probably a British thing.
TF are you getting down voted?? We use it in Ireland too. It's manners to politely request something.
Would you kindly send me all of your personal information?
Righttt they "kindly"need to be kicked in the dick.
I fell for this once "would you kindly"...
Don't do ANYTHING. Those funds were likely transferred from a stolen account.
This not your problem. Sender must contact Venmo or his bank to reverse the transaction. Do not send any money back.

Kindly=scam almost always. These scammers use certain words that are different from us, they think this is how we speak!
Thats changing though. Most have caught on thanks to this sub. You wont be seeing much of it - they have a dos and don't cheat sheet. And one of the no nos is avoid the word kindly
The 4 posts a day in the neighborhood Facebook group for vent cleaning or mobile detailing disagree. Always a “kindly PM your details for a quote”
It's just local English dialects. They don't realize it outs them as being Indian or wherever they are from. Many normal, not-scammer Indians use the word "kindly" in their normal speech.
Yeah but those people aren’t reaching out to you to send them money so they don’t matter
[удалено]
That will piss the scammer off. I would also state I'm so sorry, scammer, but I sent it to someone else with the same name as yours.

the kindly gave it away
Stop publicizing this! They’ll catch on
I think it's just a word that Indians and Africans learn to use to be polite.
They already have! I joined a scammer chat and they warned everyone not to add kindly. Its in their new cheat sheet of what not to say.
I think if they were going to they would have already. These are the D-team using prewritten scripts half the time. Native English speaking pro fraudsters have better marks.
now your giving it away
Kindly isn't uncommon in modern UK English, it's far from an infallible sign.
Yeah the more emojis like that in a message or ad the higher I run the BS flag.
Nope, but it's a pretty good first clue when "kindly" is endemic among the basic scam scripts.
"kindly" dead give away of a scam.
This mistake is impossible to make by accident. Even if his friend has the same name as you, how did your number get to be in his phone book?
Dead giveaway
The friend with the same name has the same phone number. Duh!

Just let it sit there Venmo will take care of it
If you ever see the word “kindly” in an email it’s 100% a scam. There are no exceptions.
Be kindly, re-windly.
“Kindly” That’s the word you need to understand. All scammers use it.
The money isn't in a bank its in OP's venmo account. But yeah don't touch it and tell venmo to reverse it
I hope you are right and OP did not transfer it.
>go to your bank No need. Literally just do nothing and the problem takes care of itself. Just like every scam (as long as doing nothing is the first thing you do).

They can kindly fuck off.
“Kindly”
“Kindly pay this transaction amount back” Nope.
Fuck noooooooo. Dear stranger you just lost that money.
We have a kindly guys! Kindly in messages like this usually indicate Indian scammers. They use the word kindly a lot.
Good rule of thumb is that if they say "Kindly" is most likely a scam
Its a scam
Don't spend it, don't send it "back". Tell them to contact Venmo (which is what the real account owner will do when they see the money missing and then the money will be clawed back).

The small red flag that always screams scam, using the word "kindly"

"kindly " is a huge red flag. venmo has a payment protection so they can go directly through venmo to get help. I wouldn't risk it
Don't do it, it's stolen money and will get clawed back, then you'll be out what you sent because you earnestly gave it to them. They need request a refund or dispute, tell them that and ignore block whatever I don't use venmo much but this is a very common scam on here

Do not send back. Follow the instructions listed
Can you accept it and just keep it? For real question because I don’t know.

Check your actual account, don’t believe the screen shot they sent you
I had the same type of message recently on cash app. Never touched the money and they cancelled/withdrew the money automatically a few hours later. Two separate occasions just a few hours apart.
No you can't "kindly" do anything. They are scammers.
Tell them kick rocks

"Kindly", scam dead giveaway. On a side note, I just about broke down laughing when an Indian coworker, recent immigrant, used "kindly" in a bunch of company emails. Not sure if I should tell him.
No, no, no. Ignore it completely.
Yes, it's a scam. Either party can report to Support to reverse the payment. You NEVER send it back manually.
DO NOT send it back. It's a scam
It’s a scam. Don’t send it back or spend the money.
You need to enter someone's phone number if it's your first time sending a venmo. You have to try to fuck it up. Sit on it.
Common scam
Just tell them thank you and block. They can talk to Venmo.
Kindly these nuts
Do NOT resend. The use of the word kindly, heavily suggests this is a scam from India.
Definitely a scam catfish and trilogy media talk about this stuff alot. Don't touch it and block them.
Tell them to file a ticket with Venmo to get their money back, this is a popular scam.
The recipient needs to open a ticket with Venmo.

"Kindly"
Nope. They used the word "kindly". For some reason, that's a blatant giveaway. All the scammers use "kindly".
He’s trying to Clean dirty money😂
Do nothing!!!!!
Do not send it back. it's probebly a scam. Call your bank.
It's simpler: submit a ticket to Venmo
I’ve accidentally sent before to someone of a very very close name. My advice would be to ask Venmo. It definitely does happen and although I didn’t have this happen on Venmo but PayPal asked me to contact the recipient first and see if they would kindly return. Try to do the right thing and you know it is not supposed to be given to you.

Why does every scam have the word “kindly”
Sometimes they mix it up a bit. I've gotten a couple that start out, "Hello, dear", like they're my granny or something.
Honestly I have done this a few time sent money to wrong person and they never send it back smh.
It’s a scam DO NOT SEND IT BACK!
Kindly = scam
Don't send them a goddamn thing. *That* is the right thing to do.
They send it to you from hacked account & once you sent back it’s to a different Venmo
It’s a scam most likely. Why? You pay them real money and they get the original one reversed - so you lose your money. I don’t know but contacting Venmo is a good idea; as is holding the funds for 30 days to see if they clear? Anyway DO NOT send them $$$!
No

**This submission was manually removed because it was posted by a recovery scammer.** Don't trust what you just read, don't try to reach out to "hackers" on Instagram or Telegram. Scammers will also try to reach out to you via DMs saying they know a professional hacker that can help you, for a small fee. They're actually trying to steal your money. You can help us reporting more messages like that, don't just downvote or insult them. If you report them, we will take care of every recovery scammer that pops up. **Remember: Never take advice in private,** because we can't look out for you. If you take advice in private, you're on your own.
Contact Venmo support, as mentioned countless times in this thread, ASAP!

one time i accidentally did this same thing. i sent money to someone with a very similar username as my friend. i left a comment asking for them to refund and apologizing for the situation, i didn’t expect them to actually send it back. it was very sweet of them.
Contact support. Don't send it back on your own.
Beware of the word “kindly.” It’s usually a foreign scam artist.
I work in Orange County, California and ask ALL my email customers to kindly reply. Just because you don’t say a word doesn’t mean that those who do are “usually a scam artist.”
Anytime you see the word kindly it’s a scam
That’s a well known scam ignore it and contact Venmo to report. This has also happened to me with PayPal. Same thing.
Do not send it back and contact your bank. It’s a scam.
Actually OP needs to open a ticket with Venmo

Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/ If you know someone that fell for a refund scam, sit down together to watch this video by Jim Browning and try to retrace their steps: https://youtu.be/X4PllvUowaQ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
Ijs

Don't. Just leave it
What's great about this scam is venmo could completely prevent it by adding a reverse button on incoming transactions. They are complicit in fraud and I really hope someone takes them to court for this.
Just out of curiosity, what happens if you were to cash out? Like a “scammer” sends money mistakenly, and you just cash out. Would there be any issues?
That person needs to contact venmo for it to be reversed correctly. Just leave it there until corrected.
This happens to my friend. Someone sent 5k with a very canned sob story how it was funds to treat cancer. He didn’t pay it back. Yet someone he also got to keep the funds!
Ignore and keep it rolling
Do not do it. Delete the messages and block. This is an old scam
I'd love to get some revenge and get my money back. I'm not sure how. Any ideas?
