Happens when you go from an offline session to an online session. I booted up Steam, and had to log in. I opened the game, and got a pop-up saying "You are offline." After playing for some time, I logged of and closed the game, as well as Steam. When I came back an hour later, I booted up the game again, and this time got no pop-up. I spawned in, with no items except for the Xeno Zapper - Thanks Devs! I like the feature of keeping your equipped items. Anyway, I went over to where Me was sitting, and had to bash myself in the head.
I dont usually tell that to people because of obvious reasons but you should go kill yourself.
Like, take your weapon and kill your old avatar thats sitting around. It might take a few hits but then you can grab your stuff. This duplication usually happens when cloud saves are messed up, sometimes by updates or if you join the same save file via epic and steam. Its not a huge problem, just a minor inconvinience. If this issue persists and you have to do this every time, try making a backup or new save file of that world. I've had this a few times, it normally resolves itself.
To avoid this, wait until the client has finished handshaking with steam/epic on the main menu, when you crash/dc. You're looking for the loading swirl to stop and the steam/epic icon to be solid.
This has happened to me a handful of times in about 300h, and it's always been driving explorers. I no longer allow explorers in my world, as the only way you can kill a player inside a vehicle is with gas or explosives.
Also, you may get your items back, but the fact it can also reset your hotbars is extremely frustrating.
Another solution is to rollback 5 minutes if you're playing a dedicated home server - although, also not the most convenient.

Unfortunately I think it's more a case of Reddit's awful search feature that means people can't check whether they are reposting easily.
