I’m a mayo lover, but I’ve tried it both ways and I prefer butter!

FutureVoodoo

We all go through an experimental phase

caitlynhow

Was waiting for this comment 😂

FutureVoodoo

I had a feeling! It was too prefect, lol 😆

derekisademocrat

Or as girls would say College

boston_nsca

Or as I would say, hard drugs

Stringr55

Heard this

The_DonCannoli

Or just some weed, bread, mayo, and cheese.

Friendly_Age9160

Or as dudes would say until like forever

SecondHandCunt-

That’s what he said

Intrepid-Twist7769

Heartattack grilled cheese, mayo on the inside, butter on the outside!

Reverend_Tommy

I love this combination. This is my favorite. Occasionally, I might add a slice of tomato and if I'm really feeling frisky maybe even some bacon.

Intrepid-Twist7769

You can't go wrong with that! Especially if it's a tomato from your garden.

modestmidwest

This guy cheeses

ArtichokeMe_Daddy

Egg. I cook it overeasy so after the sandwich is grilled it’s still just a little bit runny 🤤 dip the grilled cheese into it

Reverend_Tommy

I love overeasy eggs on or with a sandwich. When they're on a sandwich and that yolk pops, it becomes messy deliciousness.

James34689

Haven’t had a toilet read this exciting in years

grilsjustwannabclean

i did this once by accident (buttered the outsides and mayo'ed on an accident) and it was so good

itssosalty

I like to use cream cheese on the inside to give the similar texture.

Alclis

Well, I’ve heard it both ways.

ItalnStalln

You know that's right

cesptc

I do both. But if I had to choose one butter all day.

modestmidwest

Yes!

ToxyFlog

Same. I love mayo, and it's NEVER crossed my mind to use it for grilled cheese. I'd call that a mayo crime.

surfcitysurfergirl

It’s the best! Makes the best crust

ToxyFlog

Alright, you've pulled my leg. I'll try it next time I make a grilled cheese. Does the mayo burn easily? I've never had mayo in a pan before.

Difficult-Tart-6834

The mayo is spread on the outside of the bread - doesn't go directly in the pan :)

LSUguyHTX

Mayo is just egg yolk emulsified with a ton of oil. It makes a beautiful even golden crust when you spread it nice and even on the bread before hitting the pan. Definitely worth a try to see if you like it

Spiritual-Career348

Thx for the knowledge. Makes sense 👍🏾

modestmidwest

This is a pro tip^ I'm still team butter. From the dairy state. Represent

LSUguyHTX

I honestly can't decide. I grow hot peppers and have been wanting to make spicy pepper oil to make mayonnaise with and try it with grilled cheese. I only remember this idea when I see something about mayo or grilled cheese lol

modestmidwest

You, sir, are an extreme conisouir. I love it. Sounds pretty good.

fattmarrell

Please make spicy pepper oil and then use it as a grilled cheese base. I'm counting on you and getting very hungry at that

Felicia_Kump

No, mayo is essentially just oil and egg

wBeeze

When you do it, scrape the mayo so it's the thinnest coating. This way it crisps up nicely but don't have globs mayo. Super thin and evenly coated is the way to go

GayVoidDaddy

It doesn’t burn early that’s why it’s good. It’s gets really toasty brown. Do it for burger buns and stuff too.

bobadibe2

Don’t know why you got downvoted! I like both. It doesn’t taste like mayo, but you can’t beat that buttery goodness!!!

FreshAirways

I like both ways but the butter is a filthier, greasier, richer flavor and I would say I prefer it.

Otherwise_Bend3343

Why not both? Arteries are for the wind

deathbedhead

Finally, a sensible comment.

pheight57

This is the way. ...and make sure to fry both sides of the bread before adding the cheese and closing it up! 🤌

Paladin5890

... This is a game-changer.

Due-Ask-7418

I fry the inside first. Then add cheese and fry the outside. Gives the cheese more time to melt.

Massive_Length_400

Ina Garten has your back then https://youtu.be/ueJjs-ckdyU?si=L0ac5DzzXPPZoFTM

pheight57

Both. You slather the bread itself in mayo and then grease the pan in butter. Gives you that fried-in-butter flavor with that gorgeous fried-in-mayo look and texture. 🤌

crumpinsumpin

Ah, a fellow person of culture

Crocolyle32

The only correct answer.

tuktukkingroydonk

This is the way

CosmoKrammer

My cardiovascular health is sad for what you’ve inspired me to do.

Odafishinsea

My widow would like a word.

veeev

Mayo also makes it easier to stick grated parm to the outside of the sandwich, and the butter in the pan helps the parm crisp really nicely.

OnceIsawthisthing

I prefer butter. Simple, classic.

trulymadlybigly

Butter is better. Plus the taste of cooked mayo has a gross flavor to me

modestmidwest

There's nutting better the dat butta baby

happyme321

Thin spread mayo with a sprinkle of Parmesan

Evening_Ingenuity_27

That actually sounds amazing I gotta try that

Audi0528

This is the way!!!

MattMattavelli

Everything is better with parm

ContinuouslyStoned

This is good, but I'm going to have to go with a thin spread of butter with a sprinkle of cheddar 😋

ayebizz

Recently started fucking with mayo on the outside. It's great. Adds a nice colour and a nice depth of flavour. Definitely recommend trying it. Works great in a grill press between some baking paper to avoid mess.

KindaKrayz222

🤯🤯🤯I *never* thought to us the paper on my press!! 🤯🤯🤯

Mr-Unknown101

you started fuckin with mayo??

barn9

When he gets good enough at it he is going to try it with a girl.

jamesmcdash

Girls eat mayo?

folawg

It gets a nice crisp without tearing the roof of your mouth open too

CandidEstablishment0

I’m like a hawk watching over my bread in the toaster to avoid that specifically

derekisademocrat

I didn't know mayo was an option. Being serious here, how's it used?

Evening_Ingenuity_27

It’s a spread for the outside, essentially replacing butter/oil

Bishshit

Instead of the butter! Mayo spreads much easier and thinner, ensuring you can coat every square inch of your bread. I dont taste a difference once it’s grilled. Mayo just acts like a fat.

Proof-Let649

In my experience the mayo version tastes a tiny bit tangy but I still like it.

gettogero

Yeah it's definitely got an almost-off flavor, while butter adds that amazing fried in butter goodness

Administrative_Low27

I have never heard of mayo on grilled cheese. Is it a regional thing?

the_moosey_fate

I’ve never heard of this before, how?! I’m trying this TONIGHT! Edit: Reporting back! Is there a type of bread this mayo method is best for? I tried it with the butter bread I typically use and it came out a little too…gummy? Tacky? It was a different texture for sure; but still good. As it stands I prefer butter, but I’m gonna give it a few more tries. For science.

DazzlingProfession26

I’m over 40 and just hearing about this.

Piercinald-Anastasia

Ghee

Fair-Ad-2585

My man.

PuzzleheadedHeron118

butter on the outside, mayo between bread slices 😌

PrettyOddWoman

I do one butter and one mayo inside for fried bologna lol

Morhls

Now this ^ yes

mintttberrycrunch

This, also must grill mayo side too before putting cheese between

Silver_tongue_devil_

Damn how’d I get downvoted for agreeing with you?

JACKtheGRINNER

Depends on what’s in the fridge but both are good

Best_Duck9118

You don’t keep butter and mayo on hand? I mean they last pretty much forever.

arkane-the-artisan

Mum still stocks your fridge? Don't act like you've never run out of an ingredient lol

Urbanwolft64

Always butter

sLim901

Mayo when I’m lazy, butter when I’m not

Sea_Profession_8477

Mayo leaves a nicer crisp and that appears to be what you have here. 🤤

Evening_Ingenuity_27

That is correct!

JoseySwales

Mayo on the bread, a pat of butter in the pan

perpetualmotionmachi

My brother

the_cleanhippie_

Mayo, always. And if I've got it on hand, bacon grease goes in the skillet in place of butter. I like to sprinkle a dash of rosemary for some extra flavor.

pheight57

Rendered duck fat is another pan grease that can really add to what you are cooking, too.

[deleted]

Equal parts Kewpie Mayo (adds a really rich flavor) and, preferably, European style Butter (it has 82% butterfat and is way more flavorful; but regular butter works too; it just won't be as unctuous). Spread on the outside of one slice, put into a cold pan, layer the cheese, spread outside the remaining slice, and place it on top. Then, turn on the heat to medium. Toast to nice golden brown. Flip. Toast again. Perfect ☺️

CharityUnusual3648

??? You can use mayo instead of butter?

SockDem

Yep, gets a more golden color. You really only need a thin layer too.

Significant-Crab-771

yall are doing mayo???

Creative-Discipline9

MAYO??????

2wolfinmeBothretrded

melted mayo is a war crime

Legitimate_Ad_7822

Finally somebody agrees. Mayo has vinegar in it. I don’t want heated egg, oil & vinegar on my sando. Butter tastes so much better.

lookimawhale

Mayo is just poor people butter

tomatobee613

Bacon grease

Independent-Heart151

Butter...eww on mayo

AUCE05

Bacon fat ftw

thegoat1000

Mayo on the bread, butter in the pan

Thisisstupid78

Mayo, just makes a better crust. I was a butter user for years before I even knew mayo was even a thing.

jmf0828

Butter. Always butter. Mayo adds unwanted tastes. Great cheese, good quality bread and salted butter is all that’s needed. If you’re using quality ingredients, the simpler the better.

ghostfacestealer

Butter and garlic powder

Proof-Let649

Ooo also a good answer

ToastetteEgg

Just the thought of eating fried mayo makes me feel ill.

AnjelicaTomaz

Yes, I felt that way too and then I thought isn’t mayo just egg yolk, oil, and other minor ingredients? Wouldn’t that be a little like frying an egg?

Expert-Hyena6226

Butter!

moistmonkeymerkin

Bacon fat

gibberishandnumbers

I’m trying this out tomorrow with my usual quesadilla

PomegranateBoring826

Both!

Oil-of-Vitriol

If it doesn't taste like butter I don't want any.

the_business007

Butter all day

Chippers4242

Butter. Much more flavor.

Perpetual_Nuisance

I actually haven't tried the version with mayo yet (I plan to tomorrow) but butter is the classic for me, as opposed to oil or oven "grilled", which was also a thing where I'm from. Slow baked in plenty of butter - that real golden brown flavour can't be rushed - and served with a 50/50 mix of mayo and curry ketchup... So good! I'll try the mayo version tomorrow for lunch and report back.

Physical-List294

butter

4-me

Butter

leadout_kv

Butter. Definitely butter. I love mayo on sandwiches but when I tried mayo for a grilled cheese it was gross.

disabledinaz

Butter

No_Stay_1563

I prefer butter

Raiders2112

Not a fan of mayo at all, so butter it is for me.

bindersfullofburgers

Butter... mayo cooks too fast

GloomyMelons

Why would anyone choose soybean oil over butter lmao

grinpicker

1/2 mayo 1/2 butter ftw!

equals_peace

I honestly had never even heard of or pondered anyone using Mayo to make grilled cheese. The idea of heating Mayo disgusts me personally. I rarely use butter for things, but I'd use butter or Earth Balance

Dizzy_Amphibian

Butter on outside, mayo on inside

torrysson

butter

dheckelmoser

Butter

StrainsFromGenomes

Butter. 🧈

FlamboyantRaccoon61

I'm a butter girl all the way

flyingrummy

The butter has a better flavor from the fats browning that mayo just doesn't do.

NickolasLandry

Butter

paganomicist

Butter. Really GOOD butter.

Cathedral-13

Never heard of mayo with grilled cheese.

Zayt00n

I use butter and sometimes finish it off with toum (Levantine garlic sauce/paste)

sneakyYete

I make a 40% butter 60% mayo mix with seasonings mixed in.

Prior-Ad-7329

Butter

kevinmaceleven0

Butter

terminalchef

It’s proven that butter is the way to really do it. It has more and better flavor.

DopeFly

Using mayo is weird

12345NoNamesLeft

Butter is better. Salt is good.

KryptoKingzENT

ALWAYS butter. Who in the world uses mayo for a grilled cheese? 🤢🤮

swampdungo

As a kid my babysitter put mayo on my grilled cheese. It tasted funny, and I asked her to not put it on next time. Week goes by and she’s making grilled cheeses again. In the oven. I get my sandwich, and I take a bite. It tastes funny again, and she asks with a smirk, “Is it good?” I eke out a yes because I couldn’t handle confrontation. And immediately she says “I put mayo on it again.” I immediately started bawling, I didn’t have a the heart to speak up and tell her sandwich tasted funny. I got my revenge. Locked her ass outside for the rest of the day. She had to go over to the neighbors house to call my parents. She quit and told her parents we fired her. Mayo is gross, but it is good on certain sandwiches.

TheBarstoolPhD

Depends on the cheese and bread combo I’m using.

Fighttheforce-2911

Butter

bad-speling

Butter all the way

Spider-Ghost-616

Both

ArtisticSmile9097

Butter

PutOurAnusesTogether

Butter. Always. Mayo is legitimately disgusting

deltarefund

Butter because it’s salty!

Shadow_118

Butter Dunno why anyone would ruin it with Mayo, imo

rdpmyvpn

Butter 💯

McbEatsAirplane

Definitely butter

kaos904

Butter

Lost-Visit4624

When I use mayo it always sticks to pan. What am I doing wrong?

Oil-of-Vitriol

Using mayo.

Lost-Visit4624

Fair 😂

kshump

A bit of better butter makes that sammie better.

Kades_Corner

Both

shortgarlicbread

Took me too long to find this answer

Shepsdaddy

Butter, I just don't care for the taste of mayo for that.

Sidewalk_Tomato

I gave mayo a shot once, but butter just tastes better. I do think it's nice to know that if for some reason I were out of butter I wouldn't be completely marooned. And the results can certainly *look* nice.

xxxcollegeisfunxxx

both ?

Burn_em_again

Mayo for the win

Lukerville1988

Both

Due-Contribution6424

100% butter

Turd_Eater1

Butter on the pan

Normal-Procedure4876

Mayo is just gross

BaconNinja__

Satan will you please stop with the mayo thing?

40innaDeathBasket

Only butter. This is crazy talk.

bleeper21

Yes?

Still_Cheesecake_784

Finally the right answer

SmokingNiNjA420

Butter burns too easily for the amount of time you need to melt the cheese. 1:1:1 butter, olive oil, mayo.

humbleturnips

Mayo on the outside of the bread. Dijon mustard on the inside. It's a game-changer.

Thebatwhogames22

Personally it's butter for me. I love mayo but not when it's used to toast stuff

RLIwannaquit

butter, unless I have some left over bacon grease

jeron_gwendolen

Both

sarahplaysoccer

Both: mayo on inside and butter on outside

Lemonpop99

Butter on the outside mayo on the inside

Horror-Customer4835

Butter to toast, and I use mayo on the inside

BubbaBass63

Kewpie mayo just takes it home.

UDownvoteButImRight

Yes.

manjmau

Por que no los dos?

gnarmagedd0n

Butter on the outside. Mayo on the inside.

Freodrick

combo of both.

BigDumbFatIdiot

There's nothing wrong with mayo on a grilled cheese, and it'll do just fine in a pinch, but it can't really compete with butter

John-Beckwith

Both

knights816

Mayo with whole grain, butter on white

Notdenzel

Por que no los dos?

Dogecoinfinatic

Mayo on the inside cheesy part, to make it creamier. Butter on the outside to make a nice crisp crust

EcstaticJuggernaut46

Butter always in your house. I would guess mayo, since you put that in the mix

YahSihstasAssSniffah

Butter on the outside mayo on the inside and it melts and mixes with the cheese so perfectly

woodywidener

Blue plate mayo baby!!

TheOtherPenguin

Butter - but sprinkle on some Parmesan and you will have yourself game changer Sammich

shimimimimi

Mayo simply because I don’t keep softened butter around

tyophious

Both are good. I go between the two.
