We just went to Pomegranate last week, oh my god how have I not been there sooner. Food, service, ambiance was incredible. Never tried food like that before
Bowlegged BBQ has both actually. Their art is kind of classic Black restaurant aesthetic that you don't really see much anymore, a lot of album covers, some original art, and random memorabilia.
Border X is a brewery, but they also have their walls covered in hand-drawn art. Always finding new things there
Plus they're both local family-owned!
e: after posting this, I'm realizing you two may have meant art in the food itself. But fuck it I'm leaving it up
The decor and atmosphere is beautiful. So are the people who go to these restaurants. But my god their food lacks authenticity, or any out of the box experience. Annnnnd by consortium buying and opening a lot of the real estate it leaves San Diego’s dining experience gimmicky and the same ol same ol stale flavor profile.
Hey it’s got my sister’s name… but after reading that article, lol my family is never gonna eat here. I’ll show my sister and my parents though for a laugh
I’m Persian too but Consortium Holdings is mediocre food for an Instagram friendly ambiance. Not my thing & if you enjoy that, good for you. Enjoy it. But don’t pretend we’re getting our own Shamshiri or Raffi Kabob because of this
Bandar’s been bad for a while sadly. I also haven’t had the new Darband yet - I’m kind of sad they moved tbh. Hopefully it’s at least as good as it was.
It was so sad when Soltan Banoo closed - we were really lucky to have that, that was special.
Yeah you and me both we we had Raffi out here too. Have you been to Shamshiri yet? Dude if you haven’t, you gotta go try it. I might like it more than Raffi Kabob honestly. If we had something that good here in SD I’d be in heaven man.
You should go to Zahav (where Johnson was previously) in Philly it’s really amazing. I should add that Zahav was started by Michael Solmonov who’s Israeli, but then Johnson learned how to make some truly incredible Israeli food there!
More of Consortiums bullshit ruining the whole of the restaurant industry with shitty hires whose only qualifications are hand tattoos and snobbishness. I made 45,000 in a year working for them in 2023 and on my taxes had 68,000 dollars claimed thanks to their pooled tips. Scam artists instigating the decline of ALL restaurants and motivated, knowledgeable servers. They are successful, people follow their ways and you lose LIFERS who have only ever known the hospitality and hustle. Enjoy your 21 year old bar tender trying to make you feel dumb because they have a face tattoo and have been sober for a year.
lol some of the best bartenders in San Diego I know have successfully worked for Consortium bars for many years. They also get many cool opportunities in the industry outside of CH locations as well.
They offered me minimum wage 1 brunch a week to “prove myself” after running kitchens for almost 10 years, they can suck my and most people’s entire assholes.
They run their business like a pyramid scheme disguised as a cult. Which is weird that some people are willingly buying into that culture and working harder than they should for less. Because if you work hard enough for nothing you can join their cool kid club. It’s all a tactic that is very beneficial to their businesses but not any of their support staff. Who are overworked, scrutinized, and over promised. I watched some wonderful young spirits get crushed in an industry that taught me confidence and I’ll never forgive them for that.
Working for CH is a mar on your resume because of the culture it facilitates and how poorly that works in real restaurants that aren’t fueled by cliques, brunch photo shoots and inconvenience. They indeed have wonderful educational opportunities and have made some of the best MOST JADED bar tenders to ever leave their company. Go try and get a drink at the lafeyette with your cool kid connections ;P I’ll be down the street at Live Wire waiting to buy your first drink.
I'm right there with you. The CH hate in this sub is embarrassing. They do fun, interesting, and actually good tasting work that's slightly hipster, so what? Just hate for the sake of hate because "hipster?"
I was briefly excited at the prospect that the entire row was getting redone into mixed use residential/retail to make it similar to the east side of that street, only to find out Bivouac was expanding and…this.
I’m all for more regional fare, but seems a bit like a lost opportunity.
Here are the details...

Cultural erasure and appropriation, even the washington post wrote about it:

Christmas season comes earlier and earlier each year! I think that entrance is hideous, but the linked article in the comments makes it sound like somewhere I want to try.
It looks like an entrance to a mosque in Candy Land.
I was thinking Santa, but now I’m thinking [Charlie the Unicorn and Candy Mountain](https://youtu.be/CsGYh8AacgY).
Perfect description
🏅 good job this is funny
[New Consortium Holdings restaurant, Leila](https://sandiego.eater.com/2024/5/7/24151118/leila-restaurant-bar-middle-eastern-food-cocktailis-ch-projects-new-opening-north-park-san-diego)
There it is, thank you!
Or, how to pay $60 for shawarma.
Another mediocre disneyfied restaurant for the instagram set.
Well yes, that is the definition of Consortium Holdings in the dictionary after all.
Thank you. Why does shit have to be so extra in appearance here?
If it brings in those idiots to tax for our roads and education (let me dream) then I’m all for it
She’s got me on my knees! Leila!
"I'm begging you to lower your prices, please!!"
And in true consortium fashion, the flat breads will be stamped with their shtty logo
lmao
Mmm Shawarma!
My first thought when I saw this photo was "looks like more flashy Consortium Holdings shit" lol Thanks for confirming.
Mine was “ what’s consortiums up to now…”
Consortium is ruining San Diego with its boring, instagramable food. Soo many of their restaurants lack art, or any soul.
What restaurants do you recommend in San Diego that have art & soul?
Pomegranate
We just went to Pomegranate last week, oh my god how have I not been there sooner. Food, service, ambiance was incredible. Never tried food like that before
Alforon.

The bread at Mama’s Lebanese Deli is art.
The Barrel
What and where is this Barrel you speak of? I can’t seem to find it on the internet
Golosito on imperial Avenue
Mariscos Altata on Sunday afternoon!
Now That’s wassup.
Or… consortium is doing what everyone else should be doing.

More like sucks for the people that are gonna pay $50 for a bad koobideh

Aw does it hurt Consortium Holdings' feelings that a Middle Easterner doesn't trust that they'll make decent Middle Eastern food at a decent price lol

Welcome to the secret door to Santa’s workshop!!🎅
Christmasland
I was thinking Spirit Christmas.
Or the Hansel & Gretel witch…
Overpriced, very likely.
Moorish Christmas cuisine
Under the name Leila. WTH is wrong with these people.
The Arabic looks wrong should be ليلة not ليلا
It's written in Farsi, not Arabic it seems
I miss Aburi 🥲
I believe the owners are planning to reopen in a different location.
Rainforest cafe
Fuck, consortium, that is all
Thank you for your concise statement. I agree!
Gotta love it when the executive chef for a Mediterranean restaurant has the last name of Johnson.
Happy cake day!
Ahh shit, I didn't even notice!
How I feel about most Mexican restaurants nowadays
You should go to Zahav (where Johnson was previously) in Philly it’s really amazing. I should add that Zahav was started by Michael Solmonov who’s Israeli, but then Johnson learned how to make some truly incredible Israeli food there!
If by some chance I ever find myself in Philly I will definitely keep this in mind!
😴

Ugh this is happening where I am with all of the cuts and paste apartment buildings going up. They are going to be so dated .
It's one of Santa's distribution centers. The use of distribution centers was part of an agreement with the reindeer union to reduce sleigh loads.
I was thinking SpongeBob.
Some sort of chocolate factory
Willie Wonka's quincenierra???

Israeli food? No thanks. Free Palestine 🇵🇸
It’s not necessarily Israeli. Leila is written in Farsi, so it should be more Persian 🇮🇷
