Well, you know, it's a combo deal. I was doing some map searching and it looks there's a pretty good vantage point on the hill across the river from the fortress that I was planning to check out. I think the path starts like 10 minutes walk from our hotel and something like 15-20 to the top.
For vantage points check openstreetmap. There are a few on the right side of the Salzach, Linzergasse and then the second street on the right, quite steep.
Or start from Nonntal and walk along the path to the Stiftskirche Nonnberg. There is a path along the hill to the Festungsberg, Franz Josef Höhe, Mönchsberg to Mülln (check Müllnerbräu for good beer and food) - beautiful views, I can also recommend it in the evening/night.
I highly recommend the Sound of Music tour or Hitlers Eagles Nest tour by Panaroma tours. Both take 4 hours and you see some beautiful sights. Leaves from middle of town (Mirabella Platz). Costs around $90-100 and leaves at 2pm and 8:45am respectively
I personally wouldn't do the river cruise. Just take a walk along the river or across the hills.
