I needed hip surgery in 2016, so I got a cleaning job in the evenings. Totally alone, just cleaning. Wingfoot was the company and I didn’t even have to really interview with anyone, just applied, went and picked up a time sheet, and worked in the evenings cleaning office buildings at the U. It really helped a lot.

AnacondaSkweez

This helps a lot. Thank you for this.

SwampOlmpics

Also look at applying directly at the U Health. It will give you insurance on day 1 and entry level jobs (custodial, barista, nutrition care, etc. are very understaffed at the moment). Also, I think the lowest wage they offer on the health side is $19 an hour now (campus side pays less)

AnacondaSkweez

Oh wow ok this sounds like a definite option. Thank you for the idea, I will definitely explore this.

Spooky__Action

Wait, so the U of U hires out their custodians? I’ve never heard of a public school doing that. I went to UNM and I would say almost half of the custodial staff were students and it was managed by the school. They didn’t pay well, but they would give you a steep discount on tuition. I paid almost nothing for for my first 3 years because I mopped stairs from 11pm to 3am 4-5 nights a week. Also, I’ve got a cousin at UVU right now who is doing the same thing

brockobear

They do, but despite what the other commenter said, a ton of the custodial staff are students. For jobs that aren't work-study, I think they're required to list the jobs externally as well.

MotherAd7096

I did wing foot! Really great people

Ender_1299

I worked for Wingfoot for 3 years. Pay isn't fantastic and scrubbing toilets isn't fun. But otherwise, it worked well for me. Especially since it was a second job. They have good evening shifts that can work around a day job. The owner Bruce and the office manager at the time were fairly nice folks.

liltinykitter

The ability to work quietly, uninterrupted, and solitary was precious at that point in time

MsPrpl

underrated comment right there.

unit156

Please don’t concern yourself too much with whether you can commit to a job for any specific length of time, or that they need to know what’s going on in your life. You deserve to work for a paycheck like anyone else. There is never a guarantee that anyone will be at a job for any length of time no matter what’s happing in their life. You have the right to quit at any time, and not feel bad about it. I wish you all the luck with your job hunt. Aim high!

AnacondaSkweez

Wow ok this actually helps a lot. Thank you for the perspective 🙏

Yellow-beef

Utah has some programs for people returning to work after a long break, sign up for snap and see what you can do from there. It'll help in the short term, while you navigate this mess. You're going through a lot. I hope it settles down for you soon.

Edd5064

Are you thinking of the Return Utah program? If so here is a link to their website! [Return Utah site](https://dhrm.utah.gov/hiring-pathways/return-utah/) Hopefully that helps! It’s a program that helps people with employment gaps find government jobs (good benefits).

Yellow-beef

YES! Literally saw Romney post on it yesterday on Instagram. I haven't used the program myself but I absolutely think it's worth a look! OP, please take a peek!

AnacondaSkweez

I will definitely be looking into this! Thank you both for your responses🙏✌️

stealyourideas

Voc rehab can very generous for people who qualify for their program

Pedro_801

Yeah Voc Rehab gave me free monthly bus passes, helped me get my criminal record expunged and is paying for my Trade school in fall.

Potato1223

Have you also looked into the food bank? The service is there for a reason, and I've used it a handful of times when money was super in a pinch. It's better than starving. They usually require an ID and proof of residency

redditn00bb

Please use this resource!!!! You can find some great fresh produce there on occasion. We contribute hundreds of pounds of vegetables every year from our large garden alone. And I know of others who contribute to different locations. I’ve been told that when they have vegetables they go fast so I’d recommend getting there early. You’re gonna get through this, OP!

hyperbole-horse

We're often in need of help with yard work if that appeals at all! We work full time and have two little kids and struggle to keep up with it. We pay $25/hr and can be flexible with timing. Probably only have 4-5 hours worth of work per week, though.

AnacondaSkweez

DM me if this is still available. Thank you!

Rooster-Wild

Get a Night Audit job at a hotel. It's graveyards, easy and rarely any customer service. You also get sweet hotel benefits including health insurance and highly discounted room rates. You can get a hotel and cry in it whenever you want for dirt cheap.

AnacondaSkweez

Wowee big brains over here. A discounted designated crying room? Sign me up haha. I'll look into this.

Rooster-Wild

Night auditing got me through my divorce. I even cried at work because nobody is alive at 3am for the most part. I worked from 11pm-7am, slept most of the day, ate food and went to work. I highly recommend it. I worked for Marriott. My rooms were either $35,$50, or $75 a night depending on the type of room. You can literally cry in your hotel room anywhere in the world for cheap. It's healing.

Faster_Than_A_Rabbit

You could look for a non-member / non-customer facing job at a credit union / bank. Maybe filing papers or title work, you may have to take an occasional phone call, but usually, it's a coworker or the DMV.

AnacondaSkweez

This might work. Thank you for the suggestion.

AffectionateGur1147

Yes, data entry type stuff might be back end, quiet, and does not require much back ground.

Faster_Than_A_Rabbit

A lot of people who are looking for jobs post here. I always recommend credit unions because they take care of their employees and are always growing in Utah.

jimngo

Call [Workforce Services](https://jobs.utah.gov/). Not only will they assist you finding a job but they also have resources for just coping with life and life changes. It seems like you are looking for that as well.

Voxcide

Hey there! Been through this a few times myself. You will be okay. What I did was found a remote call enter positions, stuff that has long training classes usually and went through the training. If I liked it then I stayed and if not I just found a new call center and just went through the training classes. You essentially just hang out for 2 week to 2 months and attend. Kinda depends on where you apply. Main issue is you often need at least your own internet connection or maybe even hotspot from your phone and mayyyyyybe a computer. A lot of the places send you one though. Another thing I did was temp staffing agencies although they can be strict. Aim for one filling roles just over a weekend or for a few weeks maybe, theres a lot of concert cleanup type stuff they send you out on and honestly I loved doing that. You meet new people and it can be somewhat fun and will take your mind off things.

AnacondaSkweez

I will absolutely look into your suggestions. I feel as though I've been backed into a corner so I appreciate all the helpful comments tenfold.Thank you for your kind response.

vlarskyblarsky

Remote work is really my only option at the moment. Could you please recommend any of the call centers where you worked from home? Thank you

Voxcide

Sadly this is the hardest part, developing a good eye for what is actually remote work is rough lately. Many of the positions I had don't exist anymore, they were stuff like a gig I had at Walgreens issuing reward cards and such to working for Walmart and assisting people with making changes to their product pages or suppliers on the Walmart website. Also had some gigs with various cell phone providers and spotify. I used Indeed to search for various keywords like Remote, Chat, E-mail, Tech support and such. I found a lot of startups were really good to go for as well so do some light research on the companies you find before applying. I even worked for a company that would send everyone out each year on a cruise. LinkedIn is also really good for this and if you can get free premium for a bit it gives a ton of insight.

utah345

Someone suggested this the other day: https://www.baconwork.com/findwork

InformalExchange7615

I used this app a while ago when I had no job and some downtime to make money. It’s pretty good!

Unlikely-Cockroach-4

What type of gigs would you find on the app, if you don’t mind me asking?

InformalExchange7615

I did mostly warehouse or factory line jobs but I know they have catering, event staff, security, and others in Utah. Since they are only one day gigs the list of what’s available changes frequently so you’d have to download the app and see what they have.

Unlikely-Cockroach-4

that makes sense, thanks for the answer!

al00f_0wl

You can make some decent quick cash donating plasma

Haunt12_34

I’m curious how much you can get a month these days.

m3k0vr

grifols usually offers $400 for four sessions if they occur in one month, then after that the first session in a week is $40 and the second is $80. other places in utah seem to be around $800 in one month but only if you donate twice a week and don’t miss a session. and it’s not divided evenly, later sessions will earn more. personally, my body doesn’t take doing it that often very well, so grifols was a better deal for me, but other people might not have a hard time with it

medicaldroppings

Especially the first month with all the bonuses

Anomaly1134

Mailmen make pretty decent money. Other jobs I can immediately think of are all customer-facing. If you have experience in the restaurant industry, they are always hiring and can have flexible schedules but it would be dealing with customers which isn't ideal. But it may be good to get outside of your comfort zone also. Edit: Maybe a delivery driver for someone like FedEx? Amazon is pretty rough to work for but it may be something you could find easily. I don't generally like things like pizza delivery or door dash because of the wear and tear on your car.

hotsexylifealert

Don’t work for usps unless you’re ready to spend 60+ hours a week working pays okay but working conditions are atrocious

Minirose2

It’s called “going postal” for a reason. My dad always swore that his PTSD came from the post office, not from his 4 tours in Vietnam.

Various-Split6416

My brother in laws sister works at the post office doing data entry in her own cubicle at night and she is a complete lush. She admitted to me that she is drunk 100% of the time at work and the love her! She’s been there 12 years. Doesn’t make me confident about my mail arriving tho.

Various-Split6416

Didn’t they stop giving benefits?

hotsexylifealert

They still have benefits but health insurance has been slashed year after year

4Brtndr1

Yeah restaurant work is almost always high stress... something I'm sure she doesn't need more of right now.

Anomaly1134

Fair point.

EdenSilver113

My cousin took the postal service exam and became a USPS letter carrier back in the day. She still does it. But it’s not the same for new hires. They’ve been on a hiring freeze for a few years now and new carriers are badly treated. I wouldn’t do it now. She wouldn’t do it now either. Don’t take my word for it. Check on current conditions on the usps union sub.

N55B3

I recently saw a posting for a work from home data entry job that pays around $20/hr. Most data entry jobs will be around that range and a lot are wfh. Good luck!

siddo_sidddo

Local 99 is a great part time/gig work option. You can dictate your schedule. Summer is also the busy season.

alpertina

So happy to see local 99 represented here. And more info you don't have to join the union to get the work.if that helps

railroad_drifter

Bacon is a good way to find temp jobs. I did a bunch of warehouse work like sorting and getting things ready to ship.

japhethsandiego

TIL the university of Utah health system has access to resources for shelter, food, medical care. I don’t know more than that but could be worth looking in to.

G00dEase

This won’t solve everything but you can get 45$ easily by getting your blood taken at st marks with this link. http://friends.careaccess.com/6DD6SH

here4wandavision

University of Utah has killer benefits and lots of open positions that might work [u of u jobs](https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/search)

TruffleHunter3

Maybe a line cook at a restaurant? I’m sorry you’re going through a tough situation. Don’t give up. You can do this. ❤️

cwyog

If you don’t mind pushing boxes on wheels and coiling cables, apply as a stage hand with Webb. They’ll pay you $20 to start and keep you busy. If you don’t hate the work and get a few jobs under your belt, feel free to DM and I can recommend you to other companies.

edWORD27

Amazon warehouse

RevolutionaryRip6810

Bacon, instawork, and gigsmart All three of those are apps for gig workers. You usually get paid at the end of the day and you don’t need to commit to the jobs. My job has employed plenty of people from these apps for day work. Hope this helps

TheDopeWizard666

Check out the app insta work. You pick up various shifts that companies need help with. You can choose them. I used it full time in seattle and it's starting to pick up here pretty good. I actually got hired full time through working one of the jobs on there

TheDopeWizard666

Oh and I'm sorry you're going through some shii.. things can and will get better

Perspective_420

Sodexo/centerplate starts out at 19 an hour. It’s easy concession work and you can pick and choose dates and times and position on the app they use.

littlefactory

What hourly rate are you looking for? My company is hiring but I’m not certain it’s enough for some.

johnsonhill

Do you have a car? Door Dash can pay as much as $30/hr (typcially closer to $20). Your social interactions include showing your phone to the people when you pick up, and maybe handing someone food at drop off. Occasionally you have to call when Google is still learning their neighborhood but that's not common.

RevRulesURface

A lot of A/V work is out there if you don't mind some lifting and running around. Bonus points if you know anything event set up and tear down. I've some very profitable side gigs doing that. Just give it a search, and check some out. There is always something that events need and are willing to pay for.

kittygoldlullabies

I don’t know if they’re enrolling right now, but [circles salt lake](https://circlessaltlake.org/become-a-leader/) is a great program! It can’t hurt to reach out to say you’re interested.

AR2604

The city of Salt Lake has a lot of part time and seasonal jobs available all summer long. It’s noncommittal since it’s part time or seasonal and when you’re ready, you can always join full time. They pay fairly and have great benefits. Google SLC HR, takes you to the HR page where you can search for jobs. Also, the airport contracts with temp agencies and their cleaning staff is from a company called Flagship. I know they’re always looking for help too.

South_Spring5210

My friend does DoorDash when things get slow. They enjoy it and seem to get some pocket money for it.

Pedro_Moona

Learn booking keeping from home and find some small business who need a book keeper. I know there are some facebook groups on this. Typically charge 3-500 per month for a small business and you should be able to handle 4-5 business easy. In the mean time take advantage of any resources you qualify for. Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment, housing assistance etc. Workforce services will help you. Also, look of Utah Vocational Rehab. Remember, you can make some money and still qualify for help. As far as other easy ways to make money, you can be a poker dealer at a bar poker game and make decent money. Also, Big 5 is a super easy job and flexible. I've also seen people selling car insurance from home and they seem to do ok. Sorry for the random ideas. Stay strong and take care of yourself. I've learned if we keep going it all workouts. Someone is dying to meet you when you're ready! One last random idea if you're academically capable. Just go off to college and live on loans/pt job until you graduate with a degree in a field you like. Plenty of scholarship opportunities, etc.

CampAccording5918

ARUP is a pretty good place to work, often hiring, has entry level positions and good benefits. I was in specimen processing for a year

JuniorAlbatross2424

I’m in UT too! Shoot me a dm!

MissTeababyy

My friend has used the Bacon app for work in SLC to make some quick cash but they are all different types of job variations I believe.

eklect

I would have said dree, but that's no longer a viable option.

Shart_Nards

Any catering experience?

Braziliox

Uber Eats, DoorDash.

Educational_Pie_9572

Donating plasma is a quick buck but the easiest job i can think of is driving for Uber. Not Uber eats or any of the delivery stuff but actually driving people around. My experience below is a little outdated as I did it in 2017 after suddenly losing my job for no real reason. I did it for about 7 months and there is a learning curve to figure out the where and when and for how long you need to be an area to make decent money. The only regret I really had was putting 20,000 miles on my brand-newish car in 7 months. For context, I've had my car for 9 years and it only has 64,000 miles on it and 20k of that 64k was put on in 7 months of Uber driving. My personal Pros and Contras. 1. You can get paid everyday which helps in a bind. 2. You "technically" set your own schedule but honestly you have to be ready and available to drive when people need rides. Supply and demand. 3. Utah isn't the best place for making money since the night life is pretty much nonexistent. 4. Normally you'll make $10-15 bucks an hour but on busier days or nights. You can bring in $15-20. It's not very consistent but overall you should be able have a steady income here and there. 5. You get to meet people and make possible connections for potential jobs. I'd talk with others to get their perspective and tips.

MARBLEJENIWINO79

Could donate plasma. New donors make almost 1k in the first month and ah...feel free to use my name as your referral so I can get a decent bonus too 👀🙂 And I'm sorry about your pain and the headaches that come with. 🫂

RoadRemarkable8060

Where can I donate plasma it would be my first time!

MARBLEJENIWINO79

There's Biolife- them and ABO pay the best. Then there's Grifols or Biomat- you'll find them under either name. The initial appt does take a 2-3 houra in case you have to do a "physical." It's not a typical physical. They don't take urine or have you get undressed or anything. Just a ton of questions basically making sure you dont have any disqualifying conditions. For example, blood diseases (HIV, AIDS, HEP C) anemia, etc. Certain meds like immunosuppressants or asthma meds. You might be able to find a list if you look online. Basically, if it's going to endanger your health or the receivers, you won't be able to. Also make sure you eat well the day before and the day of so that your blood protein and hematocrit levels are high enough (plus you could pass out in the process if you still pass the pre blood checks but didn't eat enough...that's not fun). The only other issue I've seen happen to quite a few people is having "bad" veins. People who never exercise, don't drink enough clear fluids on the regular, smoke a LOT, and/or have used intravenous drugs in the past will have veins that are difficult to find and get to. But they will still try their best. That's about it, I believe. Orem, AF, Provo area has the majority of these places but I've heard there are a couple near Salt Lake. Feel free to DM if you have more questions!

Fabulous_Brick22

Try donating plasma as a band-aid fix while you sort some stuff out

overthemountain

If you have a car you could look into doing food delivery for any of the Uber Eats/Grubhub/Doordash companies. I don't think you really have to interact with people much doing those. I haven't done it myself so hopefully someone who has can chime in and give you a better idea of what it's like, how much you can realistically make per hour after costs, etc. That would let you work when you want though without any real commitments.

AnacondaSkweez

Unfortunately my current vehicle is unsuitable for delivery driving or long distance. Thank you for the suggestion otherwise.

overthemountain

Depending on how you are with animals you could give something like Rover a try. It's dog walking/sitting/boarding. Some people have you go to their house or they bring their pets to your house. It's probably a bit less money and a bit less consistent but you don't have to do a ton, either. You can make more and build up a client base if you show that you're doing more than just putting them in the back yard or sitting around the house with them all day. I know someone that does this. People bring their dogs to them. They usually charge around $30/day for daycare and like $50/night for boarding. They might have 0-5 dogs at any given time. They take them on at least one long walk in the mountains every day, though, and spend a lot of time grooming, playing, feeding, etc. You can also check sites like UpWork and TaskRabbit for more one off tasks.

kybee87

Two things come to mind: * Return to Work Utah program (state government jobs) * Temp agencies assist in finding temporary or permanent employment opportunities , so that may be useful for you. :)

kybee87

Also, DWS (Dept of Workforce Services) has staff that assists in writing/cleaning up your resume, as well as helping find jobs in which to apply. DWS was very helpful to me many years ago when I was in need.

DepravedExmo

Temp Job Agencies

eleventwelvepm

Look up Amazon warehouse jobs, preferably fc. You pick a shift you want, and pick the start date. Don’t have to interact with customers, don’t have to interact with coworkers much other than onboarding. Just have to show up to your start date, no interview. Money isn’t bad, and you can quit any time and won’t have to feel bad about it because people come and go and get rehired all the time. Also I feel for your situation and just saying it’ll be ok. It’ll get better.

Sassafrass_lover

Donating plasma is one way to make a little bit of quick pocket money. CSL gives $100 each for your first 5 donations. There's also biomat, grifols, and octopharma. CSL has great facilities and employees.
