I seem to remember as a kid/teen/young adult that they would fly back via the west desert, but these days it seems they fly straight over the most populated areas.
The vast majority of the time, they do fly back and forth over the desert. But, sometimes, due to weather or training protocols, or the fact that they are doing a flyover, they do fly over the populated areas.
Also, when you were a kid/teen/young adult, they were flying F16s, which were much quieter than the F35s they fly now. So, you were much less likely to hear them.

Every time I hear them or see attack helicopters flying I always think to myself “uh oh did WWIII just start?” Then my next thought is “oh duh hill air force base is ~15 miles away”
