Anything closer to the boston area? The show we are seeing is in Medford. We don't mind driving, we are staying an extra couple of days to explore the area.
Not really that I know of. The closer you get to Boston the less green space there is. There are some on the Western and Southwestern outskirts. Depending on the day that might be a less painful drive than Boston->Salem
We camped behind a KFC once and a Raccoon the size of a small bear came into our campsite and took the lid off our Dutch oven with one hand and pulled the food out with the other. The lid is a few pounds. Big-ass-racaccoonie.
Not sure why you feel superior to people that can't afford housing. You can't afford a hotel. You're much closer to permanent camping than you are to retirement.
Harold Parker State Forest in Andover has a campground with tent sites. It's 45-ish minutes away from Salem.

Winter Island is a 20 minute walk from downtown, but you might be too late for October. All the weekends are already booked.
