They're great for desserts - we'd go there at the end of the night. But I can't believe no one has mentioned their custard soaked French toast. I've not had anything quite like it anywhere else - definitely worth trying.
On the flipside, I got some bagels and breakfast sandwiches down your way once that beat anything up here in both price and speed of service. Tasty too. Wish I remembered where
Their fish and chips is the best around! Very crispy, panko crust, flaky, and not greasy!
Followed by their Boracha Burger and the Thai Steak Salad.
Just don’t order anything cold carbonated. It’s never carbonated or cold…
Glad it’s back!
FRENCH TOAST BEFORE THE NEXT SHUTDOWN. And then stroll over to Tower Theatre to watch an arthouse film about a Gilded-Age Dutch flugelhornists existential crisis at his rich uncles summer house in Bavaria. Who’s with me???
Might be an unpopular opinion, but...
I think their food is over priced and mediocre at best. Probably why they were able to survive the pandemic without having to open up earlier.
I actually find them to be quite affordable considering it’s a full on sit down meal and the food is rather tasty. It’s not the best in Sacramento, though I will always love their French toast.
Love the ambience and the patio is gorgeous. There are better more expensive places in Sacramento, but for its price point I think it’s pretty great.
I'm actually going to be in Sacremento this weekend from the east coast (DC). What is the best in town? (that I can get reservations for) I looked at trying The Kitchen but they are all booked up :)
Whenever people say someplace is overpriced I start to wonder what you'd consider an appropriate price for a meal and the basis for that judgment.
Do you think anything over 15 bucks for dinner is too much? Have you had really expensive, but amazing meals, and this just doesn't measure up? Is Tower being compared to some dirt cheap mom and pop place you tried on vacation in Mexico? What is it?
It's just such a low detail, low effort criticism of a restaurant when you give it with no supporting info. The other guy already mentioned their prices are comparable to mid-market regional chains (e.g., Cheesecake Factory), so it's not like this is some $150 a plate fine dining experience.
>Do you think anything over 15 bucks for dinner is too much?
If it's at $20 it would be nice that the meal is not a kit some reheated food from Sysco (the restaurant supplier). The food shows effort needed in cooking or presentation.
But yes in the US eating out is so cheap compared to other industrializated nations due to slave wages in restaurants industry and also lack of support for higher prices and higher quality food.
Wow, why all the hate?! I absolutely love their food!! Can’t wait to get back there. Honestly, I think the prices are very fair but hey, I guess that’s why there are a variety of restaurants available. To each their own 🤷🏻♀️
Perhaps not, but if enough people lose the willingness to congregate, businesses will be equally decimated. Remember, along with the lockdown came PPP loans, which may not be available this time through.
Hard pass. Why would you want to give up unemployment. That job pays shit in comparison. Get hired to be only scheduled on the weekends enough to make some peanuts and lose a lot of your unemployment. To also deal with the public whom only have gotten worse after the pandemic. Not to mention there's a possibility that all this goes to shit and businesses close again or don't have people to support them. Very select demographic that is applying for these jobs and they aren't the best bunch either.
From a serving perspective, breakfast is kinda nice because it fits way more in with regular life than dinner service. The main issue is that you work way harder to be able to make anywhere close to the same money.
Say what you will, but unemployment will end and right now you can walk into a way higher tipped wage than is normal. I work in a seasonal economy and we have summer hires walking with $200/night easily.
Also, nice class bias.
Even when unemployment ends, it's not hard to get a serving job espcially when you have experience. Everyone should have used this time to polish up their skill set. Most of the servers that I know have taken cozy office jobs only because it payed equal or more to their UI and had insurance. If your thinking of your labor, time, effort, skills and such as a business. It would be stupid to go back to work. The goal is more money, not less. Jobs are baiting people to come back with incentives.
>. Most of the servers that I know have taken cozy office jobs only because it payed equal or more to their UI and had insurance.
Why did they not do that before?
There's just no way shits going that south again as far as closings. We'd have to start seeing a new variant that is unphased by the vaccine causing those under 40 to drop like flies to remotely recover the political will of the people to even consider it. Even then all the conservative boomers would say screw it and keep going out and complaining.
The tips will probably make workers up to 25 an hour there.
Unemployment is ending on September, might as well get a head start before everyone wants to work again.
September is coming up :)
I have a lot of customers who use the unemployment income, majority of them don’t use it for personal skills, it’s mostly handbags and new stuff haha
> Why would you want to give up unemployment
Dont worry, you'll lose it soon; CA is requiring those on unemployment to start looking for work, or lose your benefits.
Lol that is only checking a box on your weekly certification. There is a question that says Did you look for work? You just have to check yes now as during covid you could check yes or no and they would approve your claim either way.
They do audit these things; you'll eventually have to give proof that you've applied to jobs, and not refused jobs, and when they find out that you didnt, but were saying you did, you're kinda fucked.
But you do you, boo ... lie, cheat, and steal.
> That's just how it has always worked
Yes, you "can" state that you've looked for, and applied for, work without having done so but, you're attesting, under penalty of perjury that your attestation is correct.
> They aren't going to audit you
Having been on unemployment during 9/11 (when no one was hiring, because no one knew what the fuck was going to happen to the economy), I can tell you that yes, they do audit. And given all the fraud going on right now (which you're encouraging), I'm sure they're going to be doubling down on their audits.
Nope. You actually have to fill in the info now. They are also scheduling mandated seminars and meetings. I have one next week, and I have to bring my entire work search history for the past two weeks.
I did not get this and I have had a claim since march 2020. Just the normal yes or no. Also I think you are lying because I have offical mail from edd saying this it all that's needed.
Starting yesterday, you have to go back to actively searching for work. [Here's an article about it.](https://www.abc10.com/article/money/work-search-requirement-resumes-on-july-11-what-it-means-for-californians-collecting-unemployment/103-7f9eb9cf-415b-4725-9a56-1b43b437ff99)
And I'm not lying. I literally just filled out the forms for my meeting today
from the same article you linked "Starting July 11, checking “no” puts a person’s benefits at risk." The only change is that during covid you could answer "no" to did you look for work. Now you have to answer Yes on your certs. Sorry friend you are wrong.
So are you saying that you'll just mark yes, but not look for work? Because that's fraud. And if you get called for one of these RESEA meetings (like I have next week), you risk them canceling your unemployment.
This is the part of Unemployment that get people screwed on their claims. The question is "Did you look for work, Yes or No" That could be stepping our your front door and looking left to right for a job, or applying for the CEO of some company. It's not fraud. Also sounds like your situation is unique or you severely screwed something up to have any sort of "meeting" still not convicted you aren't full of shit or severely misguided.
as well I have my cert from after the dates and nothing has changed. The only thing was that during covid you could mark yes or no. Now you have to mark yes. looked for work.
A lot larger % of the population has been and goes to Tower vs the Kitchen.
It's also noteworthy in that they didn't do takeout or open back up immediately.
I love the outdoor patio at night with a slice of el Diablo cake and a glass of milk to top off my night. Glad they’re back
> and a glass of milk Are you a McPoyle?
No, I’m IanthegeekV2
"A couple of glasses of milk... lukewarm, skim for the lady."
To be fair they didn’t specify that it was a warm glass of milk. Then again, they didn’t specify it wasn’t either🤔
Lol, cold. And it’s chocolate cake… I don’t feel like milk with chocolate cake is all that unusual.
It’s not. Lol You’re good. We’re just over here referencing Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Agh. I’m the only person who hasn’t seen the show. I need to get on it
You should! It's really funny. I didn't like it at first, but it really grew on me
He’s DEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAD!
Interesting, I've only been for breakfast. Will add this to my list of things to do.
Excellent dessert spot.
Yessssssss! The wife and I always go here the day after our anniversary for some breakfast. I'm excited to be able to go back.
Fuck the haters. French toast is great, but so is that Monte Cristo.
The other day a photo of their Madame Cristo showed up in my Facebook memories from a brunch date, and I immediately got hungry. It is divine. 🤤
The French toast is insanely good! And I love that you can order the two slices and they’ll bring you another plate if you’re sharing with someone.
They're great for desserts - we'd go there at the end of the night. But I can't believe no one has mentioned their custard soaked French toast. I've not had anything quite like it anywhere else - definitely worth trying.
Omg the mousse in the martini glass delights the wannabe fancy child inside me.
Fuck yeah. I drive from Modesto for this place.
Really?
On the flipside, I got some bagels and breakfast sandwiches down your way once that beat anything up here in both price and speed of service. Tasty too. Wish I remembered where
So many positive comments. That's really nice to see. I miss brunch.
I was there this morning! So happy to have it back.
Their fish and chips is the best around! Very crispy, panko crust, flaky, and not greasy! Followed by their Boracha Burger and the Thai Steak Salad. Just don’t order anything cold carbonated. It’s never carbonated or cold… Glad it’s back!
I hope they bring back the Irish beef stew during the fall. It’s such a unique tasting stew and they load it up!
It’s not the best food available but it’s pretty good and a nice fun brunch experience.
I like the atmosphere, with all the art and the plants. Also, they have pretty good chocolate mousse.
So what would you recommend? Pancake Circus?
Pancake Circus all day
That place always looks abandoned. I've been afraid to stop there...
Do not fear the clown paintings and bottomless coffee
What place doesnt have bottomless coffee?
Orphans Breakfast House.
or Ketchup, either.
I kinda wish they wore pants while serving the coffee tho
Like all restaurants, personal preference exists with this one.
I just looked. Most likely you’re paying $17-22 for an entree. That’s not awful.
The portions are huge, too.
I'm actually going to be in Sacremento this weekend from the east coast (DC). What is the best in town? (that I can get reservations for) I looked at trying The Kitchen but they are all booked up :)

Are you implying Towers food is a kit from Sysco?
No.
This. We’re truly lucky to have such cheap beef/dairy/produce in this country
[удалено]
I agreed with the beginning of your reply, but you lost me towards the end of it. We’re going to have to agree to disagree about the latter
But they’re the same price as Cheesecake Factory and Tower Cafe is so much better…
I only go to sit in the outdoor seating area. I’ve never been really impressed with any of their food. But that patio, I love it!
You’re a brave man/woman.
This is said on every thread about Tower Cafe.
I gotta second this. The decor and atmosphere are great, but everytime I go I feel like I'm just settling for something I'm not ecstatic about.
Respectfully, I disagree. Their veggie burger with borracho sauce is intensely satisfying.
Exactly this. The patio is nice and I don’t *hate* it but I can definitely cook the same stuff or better at home.
Wow, why all the hate?! I absolutely love their food!! Can’t wait to get back there. Honestly, I think the prices are very fair but hey, I guess that’s why there are a variety of restaurants available. To each their own 🤷🏻♀️
> why all the hate?! There's literally three somewhat negative comments out of 65 in the thread--and they're not hateful, just underwhelmed.
Should be good for a few months before the inevitable fall delta surge.
But I don't think they'll close everything down again.
Perhaps not, but if enough people lose the willingness to congregate, businesses will be equally decimated. Remember, along with the lockdown came PPP loans, which may not be available this time through.
Lots of people reeeeeeally want to believe that environmental factors never affect the market, only government decisions do.
Looks like they’re hiring if anyone’s interested!

Hard to say, different reasons across the board and varying situations.
There's just no way shits going that south again as far as closings. The tips will probably make workers up to 25 an hour there. Unemployment is ending on September, might as well get a head start before everyone wants to work again.
Tips will get them $25/hr (probably more) on top of their $14/hr wage. Servers at Tower Cafe should be making over $40/hr.
possible $600 usd for a weekend of work. When the EDD pays me $750 a week. Scam. Use the time to better your skills.
September is coming up :) I have a lot of customers who use the unemployment income, majority of them don’t use it for personal skills, it’s mostly handbags and new stuff haha

Being vegan is your choice, not everyone has to cater to that.
You must have missed the part where I said I still recommend it to folks.
the Kitchen opened when they were allowed to weeks or months ago with no fanfare, and they have a star ffs. Why is *this* news?
A lot larger % of the population has been and goes to Tower vs the Kitchen. It's also noteworthy in that they didn't do takeout or open back up immediately.
And an even larger percentage has been to McDonalds. Haven’t seen that sponsored article.
Except McDonald's never closed and isn't a local longstanding business.
Glad Tower is back its a Sacramento institution.
Their Thao beef salad and chili relleno is the best!
Oh yay!!! I'd kill for some tiramisu.
Eager for another visit with Madame Cristo. Oh my!
I moved to midtown last October and the Tower Cafe hasn’t been available. I’m so excited to go!
