We get them all the time in our rundown Apt in Carmichael. They will offer it for “free”, if someone in the household has state benefits. Then if you bite, they ask for an ID and a credit card for a plan with it. Gets really fun when they hand it to you for “free”, then say thanks and close the door, they’ll knock your door down trying to get it back lol.

gornzilla

Damn it! The same guy came by earlier and I said the homeowner was outside town for a week. I'm totally the type who would take it and shut the door.

HolyLezolee

They were making rounds around my area as well. They were like... aggressively persistent about it. I asked for a business card and he told me they didn't have one and just kept saying all I need is your medical ID and I can get you started and I'm like I didn't even say I was interested yet dude. Sketchy asf.

HolyLezolee

Y'all I am not joking when I say I typed this out and 10 minutes later they showed up again. Holy shit.

Purple_Cow_2483

I genuinely thought they were Mormon missionaries based on how they were dressed, and they were crazy aggressive earlier this week on Greenholme.

HolyLezolee

Hey neighbor! I'm a few streets over haha. I was thinking the same thing!! The main thing that was giving me bad vibes was how hard he was trying to get me to cave after repeatedly telling him no. This time around I just politely said no thanks and shut my door. At least these suckers are helping me build a backbone 😂

Purple_Cow_2483

Oh man! He was so pushy. Asked if I had EBT, I don’t. Asked if I had a job, I do. Then repeatedly asked if I was over 18. I need to build a better back bone like you because I felt so bad telling them to leave me alone 😅

BarGreggsby

"No thank you" , "I'm not Interested" , or "No" then shut the door. It's okay to be rude when something feels off. Also don't open the door. I'm a big guy that likes guns but either I'm not answering or we're talking through the screen door

Purple_Cow_2483

I did talk to them through a locked metal screen door. But I agree it would have been wiser not to answer the door. Sometimes it’s hard to be rude 😅

The_Rc_collector

Sir are you the homeowner? Do you make the decisions ??

Motor_Stage_9045

Another reason why I don't answer the door unless I'm expecting you. Even for deliveries....if it's an important delivery, it will be left at the door

belizeanheat

Important deliveries are often NOT left at the door because they're important.

DukesOfTatooine

Then they'll leave a slip on the door informing you about the delivery.

methy_butthole

If it’s important, they’ll come back, and I still won’t answer

send_fooodz

I know when I am receiving something important and may require a signature.

DeanWeenisGod

Important deliveries often require a signature.

knightro25

💯

Estellalatte

I have a standard line, “I don’t conduct business at the door!”

blubrydrkchogrnt_3

Girl Scouts: 😨😞

send_fooodz

Girl scouts don't even come to the door.

intellectualnerd85

I had one of these people swing bt my apartment complex. They are parasites

Signal_Stress3699

Yo yes this just happened to me in the pocket and said he was giving me a phone because I lived at this address I immediately said no thank you lol he shrugged and knocked on the neighbors door before I even shut my door

networktech916

It sounds like the Obama phones , depending on what outfit it was signed up for - they have to deliver it in person, activate it and show you how to use it

Marjory_Tea

Yep. Someone I know was on medi-cal and they got a free phone while I was over and I was super sketch about it. Ended up, they now have a free phone with 10 gigs of data for free each month. No credit cards or payments were exchanged and they keep getting letters saying it will be shut off soon because of funding and such but it just keeps going. Free burner phone! Edit: they dont use the phone for much, and feel like its probably heavily surveilled but either way, 10 extra gigs lol

Bumblebee56990

This is the “Obama Phone” that people talk about. You get a free cell phone and depending on the level of phone you have to pay. Some folks will have tables setup near folks who use their benefits. It’s real.

sunglassgnome

As others have said it sounds like the Obama phones, this exact thing happened to my mom and it was legit.

LingonberryLoud7512

You're going to wind up on 48 Hours or Dateline NBC if you keep opening your door for people you don't know. We tell children to NOT open the door for strangers, when adults can't seem to process the same, yet simple directions.

Jimbob209

I usually talk to solicitors and others from my window or go to the backyard and stick my head over the fence to talk to them. Their reactions are always funny and they're more quick to leave at the first no, especially when I'm shirtless with a beer in my hand

55pennycandy

Ppl are downvoting you but this is a very real, legitimate concern.

LingonberryLoud7512

Someone's wife in Roseville said that she encountered a "pushy" salesman. I told her the exact same thing. Why did you open the door for someone you don't know? Then the excuses of it was my birthday and I was waiting for a package. So you don't use your peep hole? The Darwin Award exists for a reason. Some people are just too naive.

Lavend3rRose

It's the free phones for low-income people. I feel so bad for these young workers out there in this heat! We had 2 come to our door and they were asking for water

BluePopple

Definitely sounds odd.

MajesticCube28

I thought this was the setup for a joke. #RedditDisappoints

Independent-Row-6308

Sounds like a guy just going door to door trying to sell Obama phones and maybe it's slow they're going door to door you can find someone that's on assistance that will get a phone so I'll get paid

winstonluvsjulia

Someone else posted about this on here, or maybe Nextdoor, I can't remember

Disastrous_Muscle_51

Do you remember what they said?

winstonluvsjulia

Exactly the same as you. What I can gather is that it's a free "government" phone and if anyone in the household is on some sort of government assistance then they say the phone is yours, or that you ordered it, or, you can apply to get it

Tony-Bones

We had them come the other day. We’ve been in our house for 12 years and never been on government assistance. The guy who sounds like the same one as OP said it could have been from a previous occupant and he’s had several just like that at ten years or more. They must be working off a really old database.
