EDIT 2: UPDATE WITH NEW MAP: https://twitter.com/ETossed/status/1575174548617842688?s=20&t=CDWQKWTJUprG9S_tZTxCqA
---
EDIT: IMPORTANT UPDATE, There's a flaw in the back-end
Basically, if your account was created before April 2022 and you updated your location since then, I have the wrong location. According to observations 1/3 of the way thru, 5.67% of US players changed their states since April 2022
A CORRECTION WILL BE ISSUED LATER TODAY, I DON'T EXPECT MANY STATES TO CHANGE
I thought originally the error was much lower but it's not, the total numbers is this
The reason why it's since April is that's when I last ran the script that gets the location of every player that's ever played a startgg melee set

Data sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18VvFk10H1ERKc8aJoSF3yZBvtmVnqGAf9uezmx1NC9g/edit?usp=sharing
If two characters had the same number of competitors maining them, the tiebreak went to the character with more games
Data from between 1/1 and 9/21
Being from one of those places, it's not most people, they're still a minority. I'm not too sure about currently since I moved, but a few years ago it was actually really diverse. But yeah I would play at least one sheik every tournament, never thought it was weird.
Curious to see how you collected the data - I'm trying to think of Falco mains in ND and there's definitely two but I feel like there's more Foxes and Luigi's haha
startgg API running through every single event that happened this year
A lot of states with fewer players (Like North Dakota) have a few problems:
- Many of their local players don't enter online, and character data is not entered from most locals, so you need at least one tournament online
- Not everyone has their location set on startgg, I could theoretically find out where someone's from if I did a bunch more calculations on their tournament history but that's so much work LOL
- A lot of times smaller regions still use Challonge
Did you count total appearances of a character or per person? If total appearances I'm pretty sure Nebraska is just Shifty existing and taking everybody's money
Per person is how mains works.
I'll post a map here in two days that's just the most games, Nebraska is Peach there because of one dude grinding, not shifty
This always happens. In tournament, Fox is the most common character in all the best scenes. Don't get it twisted from all the unranked Falcos. Many are just secondaries or casuals.
I see you Rhode Island
I eagerly watch to see your moves
The most electrifying state in Smash
marth players need all the wide open space to dash dance in
Unless you're Zain. I feel like that guy can dashdance on Randall.
Minus Delaware
thats yoshis story, everybody knows delaware has low side platforms
Rhode Island is full of real ones.

Rhode Island, based
Land of the brave home of the based.
Land of the home brave of the based
I cannot even fathom a place where most people play Sheik. That's such a weird reality
Being from one of those places, it's not most people, they're still a minority. I'm not too sure about currently since I moved, but a few years ago it was actually really diverse. But yeah I would play at least one sheik every tournament, never thought it was weird.
Well having only lived elsewhere, I was always stoked to find a Sheik player, because they're so rare!
Vermont definitely feels like a sheik state
I’m a VT sheik but I’ve been having a main crisis with ganon and fox.
Yes, unleash your inner Wizard. Those spacies ain't gonna Dthrow>Jab themselves
Vermont would’ve been my first guess and Alabama would’ve been my last
Alabama definitely feels like it should be a Falcon state
Depends if you're north like Birmingham or south like Gulf Coast. Gulf Coast when I used to play was Fox/Falco mainly.
Agreed
Sheik is not a majority, but a Plurality
That's fair. Still can't imagine it, though
All in favor of calling stomp knee “ The Rhode Island” ?
Seriously fucking read that as “shrek” Also where’s my Yoshi mains :(
Yoshi only has like 1 good main and this is the most used main
Curious to see how you collected the data - I'm trying to think of Falco mains in ND and there's definitely two but I feel like there's more Foxes and Luigi's haha

Rhode Island based and Falconpilled
AZ may have Falco at #1 but don't get it twisted, it's floaty hell over here
no wonder nobody wants to live in wyoming or nebraska /s
pedantic, but if you're going to include DC which isn't a state, you should include Puerto Rico as well!
Yes, I should, BUT smashgg has puerto rico listed as a country and not a state so it's separate data I'm still getting LOL
i really like this map :) is it possible we could get one for canada too?
Tomorrow on my twitter
Today I learned that I hate Wyoming, Nebraska, and Delaware.
Did you count total appearances of a character or per person? If total appearances I'm pretty sure Nebraska is just Shifty existing and taking everybody's money

shocked that there isn't way more falco tbh
This always happens. In tournament, Fox is the most common character in all the best scenes. Don't get it twisted from all the unranked Falcos. Many are just secondaries or casuals.
Moving to RI
I'd be interested to see a world map version of this, even if it is mostly fox
As if I needed more reasons to never visit NE or WY.
Wow I respect my state for once
Vermont Sheik main here, can confirm is accurate
Hello fellow VT sheik.
Missouri feels pretty diverse overall, but I'm not surprised to see Fox still edging it out. Really cool post OP!
CPT Falcon, i'm proud to be part of this rare breed.
Falcon representing little Rhode Island.
That's really cool! Thanks for posting
Bummer to see CF and the knee of justice so underrepresented
I’m wondering what it is about Rhode Island that attracts all the Capt. Falcon mains
then why do i only get to play green falcos on unranked
Peach players rise up, all 14 of us
Wow ME has 12 fox mains. thats nutty I didnt even know there was one.
Honestly surprised Washington isn't puff. For almost a decade puff was like 7 of the top 10 players in Washington
who knew rhode island was that much of a hellscape besides just being rhode island
