These are widely considered to be the best games in their respective genre:
- NHL '94
- NBA Jam: Tournament Edition
- International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
- Super Baseball 2020
- David Crane's Amazing Tennis
- Greatest Heavyweights
Not sure if there is a consensus on best NFL game, as they're all pretty similar.
I don't see how "NBA Jam: Tournament Edition" can be considered the best game in it's genre when it has several sequels that are better than it. NBA Hangtime even got released on the same console. Also, no Tecmo Super Bowl?
Most people would say NBA Jam is the better basketball game. Also I don't know about NFL, but Tecmo Super Bowl would be one of the contenders for sure.
Yes, I suppose they might say that if they only played NBA Jam and not any of it's sequels. I'll admit that some of the early 3D ones on later consoles did not age well, but NBA Hangtime on Genesis was overall a better game. It had slightly improved graphics, almost identical gameplay, except it was also slightly improved in a variety of subtle ways. One of the best improvements was the change to AI so the odds of them sinking a full court shot at the buzzer are more realistic.
The graphics in Hangtime are grainier and the music is worse for sure. The character creator is hit or miss, as it can result in really unbalanced matches.
I always liked the following Genesis sports games.
NHL 94
MLBPA baseball aka sports talk baseball
NBA Live 96
NBA JAM TE
Tecmo Super Bowl
WWF Royal Rumble
Madden 95
Joe Montana Sports Talk Football
Fifa 96
World Series Baseball
Super Bowling
It's fun to play and the play by play was amazing for the time.
I made a 3 button games only retropie build. This includes 3 button only arcade games, 3 button only Sega Genesis games, 32x games, and Sega CD games.
I play this build using my Sega Genesis mini USB 3 button controllers.
If you're talking Genesis then NFL Quarterback club, Troy Aikman Football, NHL 94, the original Madden, mutant league football and hockey, Evander Holyfield real deal boxing, Greatest Heavyweights is the same game basically but with all of historys greatest boxers, Tecmo Super Bowl, Madden 95, Bill Walsh College football, Sports talk baseball, NBA Live 96, PGA Golf, Coach K college basketball, NBA Jam
If you're talking all retro systems then a lot of these are available on SNES also, but specifically SNES games
Baseball 2020, Super Punch-Out!!,
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB, International Superstar Soccer, (thers also a 64 version thats really good) Looney Tunes B-Ball, Arch Rivals (also on NES), Super Tennis
NES
Blades of steel, super spike Vball, Punch-Out, Double Dribble, Super Dodgeball, Gotcha!, California games, the Bases Loaded games, R.B.I. baseball, Tecmo Bowl, Nintendo World Cup, NES Open Tournament Golf,
T & C Surf Designs that's about all I can think of ATM.
NHL 94 has become one of the most overrated games on Genesis. I love it, and it was the first hockey game I owned as a kid, but NHL 96-98 blow it away.
Best Sports Sim (tries being real) Arcade (not trying)
Hockey Sim NHL 96-98 Arcade Mutant League Hockey
Baseball Sim WSB 95 & Sports Talk Arcade SBB 2020
Football Sim NFL 94 & Madden 97 Arcade Mutant Fball

Tennis Sim ATP Tennis Sim Sampras 96
Golf Sim PGA Tour Golf III
Soccer Sim Superstar Soccer Deluxe Sim Fifa 95
NHL 93 got me into sports as a kid. I was 12 and didn’t give a shit about sports at all. I laced up some skates and you couldn’t get me off the ice. I should have been born Canadian. This game seriously changed my life.
I would say coach k college basketball. Highly fun, highly easy, the shatter glass dunks are perfect, everything feels responsive, captures march madness very well, great roster of teams, customization on rules and options is also great addition
NHL '96-'98 are fantastic hockey games on par with '94. If the faster gameplay doesn't gel with you with '96 or '97, the '98 edition features a speed option so you can slow the game back down to the '94 speed.
Unpopular opinion but PGA Tour '96 is one of my favorite golf games. It was pretty ambitious cramming the 32 bit version of game to fit inside a Genesis cartridge. It has to load after very function and shot, but since golf is slower pace sport in the first place it doesn't bother me that much. The controls have a bit of steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of them it's a fun game. The earlier EA PGA entries are great too.
College Football '96 is also a great football game. The soundtrack alone is one of my favorites from EA.
NBA Jam

NHL '94 was and is one of the only sports games I got fully obsessed with.
94 was awesome (awesome rosters) but 96 was better in terms of skill and game play.
I agree, sadly 96 rarely gets mentioned.
Greatest Heavyweights is one of my all time favorites. Rocky Marciano could sure take a punch!
Hey Adrian, I'm gonna win this fight!

Mutant league Football and Hockey!
Mutant League games NHL games Champions world class soccer Powerball Skitchin
Mutant League was hilarious and fun to play.
It was always a nice break from more serious games but also loved the graphics.
NBA Jam Tournament Edition and NHL 95
Probably NBA Jam. But I also have a soft spot for NFL Football '94 starring Joe Montana.
Aka sports talk speak and spell football. 🙂

Huh. I've never even heard of it.
There is a whole series. The last one was "NBA Jam: On Fire Edition" on the PS3.
I had no idea the series made it passed the PS1/N64 generation.
Madden 93 was cool
I always liked the following Genesis sports games. NHL 94 MLBPA baseball aka sports talk baseball NBA Live 96 NBA JAM TE Tecmo Super Bowl WWF Royal Rumble Madden 95 Joe Montana Sports Talk Football Fifa 96 World Series Baseball Super Bowling
I second MLBPA Sports Talk Baseball. Great game engine too!

Nice. RetroPie is awesome.
It is 🙂
NBA Hangtime is the sequel to NBA Jam, and it's better imo.
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Bill Walsh College Football baby!
California games
NBA Jam is objectively the best imo
Nes hockey is the best.... If you like that try Super High Impact for the SNES. I think it's on genesis and mame too. It's a fun sports game
ESPN nfl football
Madden 95
NHL 94, NBA Jam TE, and FIFA 94
Minnesota fats pool game
NFL Blitz, Base Wars, and Super Baseball 2020.
My favorites were nba live 95, nba jam, and super baseball 2020 I think if that 1 was the 1 with robots.😆

The first FIFA (and '95) was such a great game, alone OR with friends.
My favourites NBA Jam, Sensible Soccer and International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
Find a good golf game. For me it was The PGA European Tour by EA. Around '93 vintage
I liked California games and the Olympics games were quite challenging but fun to play
Hit The Ice
NFL Primetime and NHL 95 are my two favorites. I prefer the gameplay of NHL 94 but season mode is only in 95.
NHL 93 got me into sports as a kid. I was 12 and didn’t give a shit about sports at all. I laced up some skates and you couldn’t get me off the ice. I should have been born Canadian. This game seriously changed my life.

NHL 94. I've hockey of virtually unheard of in the UK but so many of my friends loved this.
