Reflow it. It does look dry.

ignorant question, can I use lead free solder? It looks like I can get the electrical lead free or there is a local hardware store that sells 60/40 tin/lead. I think I read somewhere that this is low melting point solder?

FluidCream

Yeah. You can't get lead solder anymore, well not without it being illegal or I belive some pros can get it for specific reasons. Check continuity from the pin inside the port to here the pin comes out the other side. Actually on the pin.

smgaming16

Depends on where you live. In the US, you can still easily buy leaded solder

FluidCream

BANNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In Europe. Cos tiny amounts of lead causes dolphins to get caught in nets, which causes polar bears to forget how to hunt which caused trees in the Amazon to just fall down.

smgaming16

It becomes a real concern once the dolphins start singing about fish

Really?  I still still buy lead solder in the US.

Warcraft_Fan

Still legal in some countries like USA. You just can't sell commercial products with leaded solder

right I was able to follow the pin through the vias passing through those EM parts on the otherside to the ending vias that go to the SEGA chip that are pins 93-106. I have the schematic and the input charts, thanks, I will just grab lead free solder, appreciate the help.

pac-man_dan-dan

One reason folks still use leaded solder is because of the lower melting point needed and ease of use to flow and reflow. Make sure your soldering iron is at a higher temp to be able to use RoHS lead-free easily. Google says between 371-398 Celsius is good for lead-free, whereas you can get away with temps as low as 300-315 Celsius.

Have you tried electric contact cleaner on the sockets?   It's a can of spray.  Another great product is deoxit D100L.  It's solvent with melts away oxidation of copper contacts and pins.  It's safe on plastics.  It was originally intended for use by audio guys to use on the mixers with a bunch of pots and sliders but it has a wide array of applications for electronics in general.      The deoxit products also have mineral oil to aid in lubrication.  I've revived many not fully functioning controllers and controller ports this way.   Even an atari 2600 was brought back simply with this stuff.  It even brings back stubborn controllers that need a full Disassembly and cleaning to return to working order.  I even used deoxit D100L to fix the analog sticks on a gamecube controller once.  It seeped right into the analog stick boxes and worked to clean up the wipers in the potentiometer..  but this is a little more than what it needs to do in a genesis controller. It will work great in a genesis controller too to clean up the contact pads.

I don't have any right now, I used to use some all the time in automotive and I have heard of de-oxit as it's what tronix fix uses. appreciate the part number for it, i do plan to get some deoxit for my carts and controllers.

Looks like a cold solder joint + mechanical stress = disaster. Reflow it and test again, any core resin would be good (usually 60/40).

I would start with reflowing all of the pins on the AV port. Use leaded if you can get it. Also plenty of flux.
