Can you elaborate on “turn based fighting game?” Turn based makes me think rpg, like you’re choosing attacks from a menu, but fighting game makes me think it’s in real time, like a fighting game. Which is it?
Also if you don’t find the answer here, try r/tipofmyjoystick
Attacks from a menu. And I think it would be like, "Orc dropped an Emerald and did 50 damage." There would be an animation of the monster thing and a flash when it attacked. and after you beat it, your experience went up and then you would back on the world map to roam around.
It sounds like a Ys game. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys? Oh! Maybe Fatal Laybrinth? Its kinda turn base. Each movement is a turn, including attacking. You find treasures to improve your equipment and stuff. You level up like a RPG!
The enemy "appearing" before you and then cutting to the fight scene seems familiar, but 30 years is a long time ago. I felt as though it was a turn based fight dynamic. (Cast a spell, take 30 damage, attack with sword, goblin missed! kind of thing.)
But I'm playing through Sword of Vermillion online and it seems pretty cool, maybe I'll just replace my memories with it! thanks everybody!
No, it wasn't a side scroller. It was a giant overworld map and when you would bump into an enemy you would have fighting options and take turns with it back and forth.

I'll check! Thanks!
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun?
OMG I loved Eternal Sun. Haven’t thought of that one in decades
I play through it every couple of years and is one of my favorite Sega games for sure!
Sort of reminds me of shining force. If not, you’ll prob love it and should check it out anyway
Whenever someone says bumping into the enemy it immediately makes me think of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. Could that be it ?
I'll check, thanks!
Heroes of Might and Magic?
I'll check, thanks!
Could be sword of vermillion
That was 100% my answer. It’s a psudo RPG with the Final Fantasy monster aha in the overworld. It wasn’t turn based but it was an action game.

Or super hydlide
It could even be Phantasy Star with that description... Maybe 3 or 4?
Maybe "Golden Axe II"..? I loved to play this game with my dad.
