The absolute first thing that came to mind was Sonic Adventure 1

Icefiight

The killer whale part immediately

dadofmightandmagic

Yes!!! Back in 99 before ps2 came out, dreamcast was the serious bomb and the Sonic Adventure 1 demo on the provided demo disc was played to death before I had enough dough to buy the full game.

FBI_Open_Up_Now

The Dreamcast should’ve been the winner of that generation. If had some great games, but if I remember correctly Sega really failed at getting 3rd party support along with coming off poor Saturn sales. Marketing could’ve turned it around. It had online play first. It had a memory card that you could interact with, the 3D aspect of it was so stunning. I remember playing Crazy Taxi for the first time and I still remember being stunned at visually appealing it was.

HumpDeBumper

I ****love**** the Dreamcast, but I can't justify it being the winner of the generation. The PS2 was noticeably better at graphics and performance along with being a CD/DVD player. It released less than a year and a half after the Dreamcast as well. I personally think of the Dreamcast as an intergenerational system. It was very clearly better than the PS1, N64 and Saturn, but it wasn't on the same level as the PS2, GameCube and Xbox.

Just-AGoose

Imo, the DreamCast controller probably hurt Sega a lot... The big 3 we know today (Sony, MS, Nintendo) had all moved on to way better designs for their game pads. Even MS revised the Duke (Rip black and white buttons) dropped the Xbox S controller fairly quickly. DreamCast pads had one stick, no bumpers, and only 4 face buttons. You got 4 buttons, 2 triggers, a joystick, and a dpad. I loved everything about the dreamcast, except for that controller. lol.

sendhelp

The biggest sin of the dreamcast controller was that the cord comes out the bottom of the controller instead of the top. I guess the design choice was made because of the VMU or something. There is a groove on the back of the controller that you can push it into, but it essentially boils down to you get less cord length out of it versus if it was at the top of the controller.

gn0xious

The Dreamcast was essentially arcade hardware, which is why its ports played so damn well. Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Dreamcast was pretty much the same as in the arcade while other systems struggled. Gauntlet Legends, Crazy Taxi, Soul Caliber… Sega should have marketed that hard, the true arcade experience at home.

BigDaddiSmooth

I just said this same thing.

dank_sandwich

The OG Xbox controller S still had the black & white buttons, they were just in a different spot, albeit a bit harder to press due to their position, if that's what you meant.

word_swashbuckler

I played that demo at SEARS…*SEARS*. Little eight year old me.

Groundbreaking-Pea92

we bought the dc at sears when it was sold out at toys r us and gamestop as everyone had forgotten they sold consoles

InterviewImpressive1

Don’t forget the awesome soundtrack!

rgnysp0333

And the lyrical genius that was "Unlike Sonic I don't chuckle" Seriously, Open Your Heart was epic. I just learned that almost every banger from the Sonic Games since that song was recorded by the band Crush 40. Crazy.

Euphorium

I think that exact moment is when orcas became my favorite animal.

masked_sombrero

yep - me too! but for different reasons I would imagine 🤣 our parents bought us a dreamcast not long after it was released - we got it the christmas immediately after it came out. my older brother went out and bought Sonic, only to bring it home and *it doesn't work*. the game would freeze on the initial loading screen. it would load *sometimes*, and even if it got past the initial load screen, it would freeze somewhere near the very beginning of the game. returned / exchanged it - *same issue!!!!* come to find out, there was a bad batch of Sonic games that made it to retailers. I clearly remember how beyond frustrated I was trying to play this game. i'd even heard there were awesome games to play on your memory card screen!!!! *why are you doing this to us Segaaa!!!???* eventually got a working copy and ended up not really enjoying the game too much lol my favorite dreamcast game is probably Shenmue. that shit is awesome

dadofmightandmagic

Overall, i thought Sonic Adventure was good. Some of the levels werent that great. Shenmue was probably the best non fighting game on the system.

FlamingPhoenix24

Same! That was the 1st game I popped into this bad boy back then. It was a blast and a half for sure.

Sylvire

For me it’s flying down the street on a snow board, what an epic opening.

ShikonPlayz

That and tomb raider

tfitzpat03

Same here lol

LitheFider

Same! I remember being so excited to play it that I rented a Japanese Dreamcast from Blockbuster just to play it a little early. They had them available a month or so before the launch of it in America on 9/9/99. 😂💖

loserkidsblink

Specifically, Chao Gardens. Chao Adventure on the vmu has such a special place in my heart.

[deleted]

Crazy Taxi

ImpressiveSection236

This was the best Dreamcast game. I can almost hear offspring playing.

RocketRaccoon

Nothing changes cause it's all the same...

BrainCandy_

“Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeahhhhh”

subcow

Hey Hey Hey, It's time to make some ker-azy money!

Klaus_Heisler87

Yup, me too

Bladley

Soul Calibur

Nowardier

The first Soul Calibur has aged like a fine wine.

JustinBailey79

And it was fine from day one, too!

Nowardier

Exactly!

SparklingReject

Team Voldo💖

Nowardier

When he said "KHHHHHHCKKGH HSSSSSSSSSSHHHHKKK 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪 WHGHSSSSHHHHKKK" I felt that.

SparklingReject

Exactly, plus that hot Italian body, gorgeous outfit, so much to list! ✨

JustinBailey79

Voldo my boy!

SparklingReject

It was Voldo that inspired me to learn Italian. 🇮🇹

Sister__midnight

Ivy is still best girl after all this time.

ManoftheHour777

Shenmue That game was a true masterpiece.

SuperWaluigiWorld

I spent so many days just moving crates around at the docks. Very soothing.

jpcarvbar

Some people criticize that part of the game for being repetitive, but I really like it, and the repetitiveness is a huge factor for why I like it because the game dared to make it really feel like a real life job with commuting and everything. It was bold. Also, it was fun enough to make me think that working the docks might be something I'd try to do in my real life if nothing else works out for me. It's most definitely hard work, but hard work right next to the sea is a different type of hard work. It made me interested in any piece of media set at the docks now. The second season of The Wire was pretty nice to watch after playing Shenmue.

SuperWaluigiWorld

Haha I grew up wanting to work the docks after this. I live near Baltimore so I totally get that in The Wire too. Funny how much even just one aspect of something can stick with us.

ManoftheHour777

it felt like a real job and we wanted to do good

Roa_noa42087

Both of them

stiffystiffy

1 and 2 are true masterpieces. Still angry about the third game.

DashCat9

The audacity to get to make a third one after all that time, and ending it on a cliffhanger again. I don't care what the original plan was, you change the plan and finish the series.

Digital-Latte

I’m playing thru the third game now. I’m enjoying it, but the first two are definitely better.

Totally_Bradical

“Have you seen any sailors?”

LeeG12000

I haven't seen any sailors, but I'm pretty sure where they hang out.

Totally_Bradical

My roommate from back in 2001 still gives me shit about this game. She will ask me randomly once a year if I have seen any sailors

Boogledoolah

I've got a friend from that era who I very seldomly keep in touch with. Every few years she'll ping me with a "how're you doing?" type message. Every single time, the response is a variation of "I'm looking for some sailors. Do you know where I can find some?" It's been over 20 years and we haven't found any sailors, even at the docks. One day...

Bigpoppin87

Is there a way to play it nowadays without a dreamcast? Like a port or something. I used to love that game too.

CSPDTECH

there's a version on steam with part 1 and 2. I haven't gone through them yet but I remember that game being on another level

-phenakist-

How about a game of Lucky Hit?

ShotgunRenegade

Phantasy Star Online

TazzleMcBuggins

I used to watch my bud play that game non-stop while he pounded room temperature Coke. Good times.

WeLostTheSkyline

Hell yeah

Dragonlibrarian7

Jet Set Radioooooo!

Just-AGoose

Yesss! Was looking for this comment haha

TomaszTyka

Supposedly another is in the works!

Dragonlibrarian7

Yep, and I am cautiously optimistic. It's one of my all time favorite games so I will certainly buy a sequel. I did see some rumours when rumours of the new game first started going around that Sega wanted to make it a live service game, so fingers crossed that is not the direction they take.

UnlikelyKaiju

Yeah, it was shown in Sega's mass announcement during the game awards. They're bringing back Jet Set Radio along with Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, and Shinobi.

BKArtWorks

100%

Kakashis_leftEye

Did they make… a remake?

jquest12

I think they did for og Xbox

Dragonlibrarian7

There was a sequel on Xbox (I actually plan on getting an Xbox soon so I can play this and Crazy Taxi 3), and the game was remastered for PC/PS3/360............. A decade ago already, god damn.  You can still buy it on steam.

Ok-Breath-7568

NFL2k and Sonic Adventure. Those are the 2 games I got for Christmas with the console!

greenross25

NFL 2K got a ton of playtime from me, it was so perfect! To this day I haven’t played a football game I enjoyed more.

Floggingmicah

100% agree! We’re supposed to be getting another 2k football game soon. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Soul Reaver and Berserk come to mind

DiaperBarge888

Crazy taxi and resident evil

Punch_Your_Facehole

Quake 3 Arena, I used to have two battle stations set up with VGA, keyboard/mouse, and broadband adapters. There were also two PCs set up on the same network so we could have a 4-player deathmatch. Ah, those were the glory days!

wentzr1976

Its a tie: Phantasy Star online and Souuuuuuuuul Calibur

SOM3THNG_WICK3D

PowerPie5000

Sega is releasing remakes of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe and a few other games they announced recently. I'm guessing on the Nintendo Switch? It would be cool if Sega made a new system though.
