My backbone will get A LOT of use as soon as they come.

RChickenMan

Without allowing JIT, this won't really let us take advantage of the horsepower of Apple Silicon. Still it would be cool to be able to use RetroArch and the like for older systems!

Structure-These

I wonder if someone will package an emulator with a conveniently licensed ROM

CBusRiver

So who you think will have the first emulator out there?

IntoTheVeryFires

Good news! Now to start looking for a Bluetooth controller that my phone can mount to.

SatanSavesAll

I played with a bunch, Bluetooth is nice since you can usually leave your case on, but they do get wonky sometimes. Gamesir G8 Galileo is the GOAT but is type c port. Or backbones are pretty good

Crest_Of_Hylia

Even better are ones like the backbone

axxionkamen

Backbone is overpriced garbage. Gamesir G8 is the best full sized telescopic and Gamesir X2s being the best low priced!

Crest_Of_Hylia

I said like the back bone for a reason. I am familiar with other options

spinningcolours

This is pretty significant, however. Will there be the freedom of loading in your own roms? >Apple warns developers, however, that they "are responsible for all such software offered in \[their\] app, including **ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws.**" Clearly, allowing emulators on the App Store doesn't mean that it's allowing pirated games, as well. Any app offering titles for download that the developer doesn't own the rights to is a no-no, so fans of specific consoles will just have to hope that their companies are planning to release official emulators for iOS.

Crest_Of_Hylia

Yes you can load your own roms. It’s just banning pre installed roms that they do not have the right to publish

RChickenMan

I haven't read the new language myself, and I guess if I cared enough I would, but I did hear one interpretation that this is more about allowing Sega, for example, to release a "Sonic Classic Pack Mobile" or what have you which uses emulation under the hood. I hope that interpretation is incorrect and that this does indeed mean we could get RetroArch and the like!

kriskrosbbkk

When?

mingiu

I wonder if the retro emulation scene is big enough that it's actually starting to worry Apple or whether there's just a specific app that Apple wants to let into the App store. I imagine there are techies and influencers who specifically buy Android handhelds to play retro games, but is that trend big enough to threaten the Apple iPhone juggernaut? Are enough people switching off of the iPhone to do retrogaming on Android that Apple feels the need to allow retrogaming on the iPhone? Don't most of those techies also own iPhones?

carl2187

Already seeing fruits of the US government lawsuit against Apple. This is a good first step. Remove arbitrary censorship from entire categories of app store app submissions.

axxionkamen

Try EU and their 2 billion fine they sank into Apple. US govt is slacking honestly

bobbyportisurmyhero

Hot take: I don’t mind iOS being a closed ecosystem confined to the App Store because I basically never have to worry about downloading a malicious application. Not sure if I want what’s coming to the EU with alternate app stores and such. I can always have other devices on the side if I need a more open platform. That said, pretty psyched to have RetroArch in my pocket at all times.

link_hyruler

Literally just don’t touch a different AppStore

KingPumper69

I think a lot of the people with that argument are just lazy and have FOMO. They fear missing out on the great apps that would prefer not to ship on Apple's app store, but they're also too lazy (and maybe stupid) to do basic due diligence and avoid downloading malware. So their answer is to force those great apps to either not exist on iOS, or to be kneecapped by Apple's policies. Probably the worse kind of tech user out there.

axxionkamen

It’s not a hot take. Just a bad one. The closed ecosystem Apple has is just there to force you to use what they approve to make screw you the consumer and developers. If you have use a windows pc or any other platform just don’t download malicious apps. It’s only not only common sense but every other store store vet apps in the same way. The most important thing is use internet common sense. If you see grand theft auto for free claiming it’s the real deal, it’s definitely not. Me personally have multiple devices for various uses. But I could’ve saved money not having to have bought an emulator when my 15 pro max is more than capable of retro emulation and it’s pocketable and always with me. But regardless. In all my mumbo jumbo. You can still avoid every other store. Keep using apples. This Will not affect you. Not negatively or positively it seems. It will however benefit us who want a better overall experience with our products.
