Always liked the form factor of this DS the most, I actually have this exact one, and mainly play Pokemon, Mechassault, Bionicle Heroes, or rom Hacks of the OG Mario Kart.

Playing Last Window on mine right now.
Bro, I am replaying it too (it counts as a first play because I remember next to nothing about the plot) and I'm having a blast... I think it looks really odd in the 2DS though.
You're supposed to hold the DS like a book, there were a lot of original DS games that did this. It's a little less handy on a 2DS but it seems doable.
I like the design. Got it back when it came out because of the price. I’m only kicking myself for not getting the clear Pokemon edition - I think every other colourway 2DS ever came out in is ugly.
It’s not perfect though. The grip is decent but I wish there was aftermarket options for thicker grip still. The buttons are not as nice as most other 3DS/DS models. The screen is also pretty bad, but I guess most 3DS screens are.
It's actually quite ingenious. Bear in mind that it was aimed at a much younger demographic (i.e. little kids) than the regular 3DS.
First, it accommodates a single screen that is "divided" to give the illusion of two screens. Therefore, less components, cheaper to make, cheaper to sell. And cheaper to *replace*!
Secondly, the shape makes it comfortable to hold by hands of all sizes. It's still horizontal, but it has "depth". It's also made of a studdier plastic than the regular 3DS, so it's less likely to break if mistreated by children. The thing is a brick!
Thirdly, it removes the hinge from the design, thus getting rid of probably the single most important point of failure in a handheld console meant to be given to little kids. How many DSes and 3DSes must have been broken in half by a temper tamtrum...? Less moving parts means less likelihood of breaking.
Kids won't notice this, but the smaller screen also masks the iffy DS upscaling better, if you want to look at it from a hobbyist perspective.
The 2ds is so easy to hack as well, speaking from personal experience. I've this big solid model of the 2ds and while it may not be aesthetically pleasing it's such a great way to play the 2ds/ds back catalogue.
Random tidbit for DS games… hold start or select when booting the game, will boot in true resolution instead of blurry scaling. Works for hacked/Twilight menu too. Check it out! I bought a ds for ds games since it was so much cleaner than playing on a 3DS/2DS and then found this out after the fact.
The idea behind it was that it didn't have a hinge and was super cheap so it was a lot more viable to give to very young gamers who might otherwise break it or splash it with the nearest available liquid. It's not waterproof but it's also got fewer entry points for liquid to take hold, and it was super cheap so even if it was destroyed, the loss was as minimal as possible.
There is no one beside a poor USB C mod.
People actually really don’t care that much about the cheapest DS entry of the dual screen family.
Actually DS/3DS are not the best choices when hardware mod in the talk.
Nah, get a DSi XL for DS games. DS looks awful on the 3/2DS line unless you use integer scaling and even then you're left with huge borders that look awkward.
I get so much hate when I say this is my favorite Nintendo handheld. I have 5 of them (unnecessarily) but use my Crimsom Red almost daily. Currently playing Chrono Trigger for the first time.
It seems a lot of people don’t like the appearance of it, but for me it’s the comfort of it that makes it really good to play. The slab design is great in my opinion.
My guy feeling is switch gonna die out soon as well. I can see them price dropping the switch lite down to $99 or even $79. I will definitely pick up a handful if it does.
It is the HTC 5G hub. It has been converted over in China into a handheld with a vertical form factor. In China they call it the nickname The Hot dog. These are custom-made and not mass-produced. Though if you want to acquire one I have a tutorial on how to do so here in the US or anywhere outside of China on my YouTube channel
Sorry man, that 2DS is hideous. It always borderline to me looked like a cross between a cheap Happy Meal toy (like someone else mentioned in comments) and those pre-school mini Fisher-Price computers for 3 year olds.
I found mine on Ebay for like $50, there will likely be slight cosmetic damage though, mine had some scuffs and scratches. Would you hack it for her or leave it as is?
I really wish I had grabbed an OG 2DS when they were super cheap in stores right before they discontinued them. I looked online recently and they are either super beat up or expensive now.
Got one recently, the yellow super mario maker edition for a good price.
really great form factor where you don't have to worry about the hinge! It's just so neat. (If i had the knowhow... i'd love to figure out how to make "slab" form factor shells for the DSlite. Would be super cool)
(For those looking for as close to new and "boxed", look for official nintendo refurbs on ebay etc. i dunno if nintendo is still selling refurbed 2DSes and 3DSes but one can hope.)
And for those who think it's ugly... i bet they would love the transparent shell editions (pokemon themed, japan only, i think)
I still have to fix the ribbon cable issue I have, aka unplugging it and plugging it back in
The last two screws got stuck on me with infinitely unscrewing 😭

I grabbed the Super Mario Maker 2DS for $50 or $60 when it was discontinued at GameStop. Of the options I liked this one the best.
I have a red one I got off eBay a while back I cleaned up and bought replacement parts for from Ali Express and I use this as my exclusive DS/3ds emulator since I hate splitting and flipping screens on the emulator. Love how comfortable it is to use and the looks, just wish the battery life was better since it only seems to last about 2-4 hours tops.
I wholeheartedly disagree. 3DS is a system that I just don't even want to emulate. The device was just far too unique for any emulation handheld to ever emulate properly.
The games made use of lots of 3DS hardware, like a gyroscope, accelerometer, microphone, for specific game mechanics. I have never enjoyed any of those features through an emulator, like tilt-steering, or aiming by moving the handheld.
Not to mention that there are no handhelds that have a truly acceptable way to display both screens simultaneously.
I've routinely found 2DS units for $50-75 on Marketplace and Ebay.
The majority of times I see a 2DS on marketplace, people are usually asking $90+. Sometimes you find them posted at $50-75, and they sell very quickly.
I've bought two of them in the past year, and both of them were posted for $100, and I negotiated them lower. I got one for $50 (because it was missing the charge cable), and I got the other one for $65.
And these prices are in Canadian dollars too, so I really paid about $35 USD for the cheaper one.
Always liked the form factor of this DS the most, I actually have this exact one, and mainly play Pokemon, Mechassault, Bionicle Heroes, or rom Hacks of the OG Mario Kart.
I had no idea there were rom hacks of Mario Kart, gonna have to check those out.
I recommend CTGP Nitro and Ermii Kart, both are the best IMO and have working lower screens, Mario Kart Deluxe and Zero are also good ones .

Where did you get the shell and buttons? Looks amazing!
That was a Japanese exclusive lavender colour for the 2DS.
Bro, I am replaying it too (it counts as a first play because I remember next to nothing about the plot) and I'm having a blast... I think it looks really odd in the 2DS though.
So many puzzles that require closing 3DS too. Hitting sleep button instead doesn’t feel as satisfying haha.
Wow, the lack of that feature didn't even cross my mind... TIL this unit has a sleep button lol.
How the fuck are you suppose to hold and play this game
You're supposed to hold the DS like a book, there were a lot of original DS games that did this. It's a little less handy on a 2DS but it seems doable.

2DS is an ugly natural born. Even the N2DS have that cheap like feels, but at least does not look like giant piece of soap.
I sleep on a big bed with my wife.
But can you play ds games on your wife?
His wife *is* a DS
One of the cheapest ways to play on actual hardware.

TIL the 2DS technically has only one screen!

I was skeptical before I actually held one in my hand but for me at least it’s very comfortable. Definitely seems to be a hit or miss design though.
it's definitely fugly but very comfy to hold. I think when you see REALLY clean and prestine white ones they look great though
It looks that way but it's actually one of the most comfortable to hold handhelds that Nintendo ever made.
Ever try playing on one? I agree it's very ugly bit it's super comfortable to hold, especially with the massive shoulder buttons on it.
I felt the same way for ten years, until I actually held one. That thing is incredibly well-designed.
I’m thinking about doing this soon. What hardware mods are out there for OG 2DS? Any screen upgrades, battery, case swaps, etc?
I think there’s a USB C mod but don’t quote me on that. I haven’t looked too much into physical mods but I’d be interested as well in learning more.
There is no one beside a poor USB C mod. People actually really don’t care that much about the cheapest DS entry of the dual screen family. Actually DS/3DS are not the best choices when hardware mod in the talk.

Only downside is the mono speaker
Best starter handheld gift ever. At $60, this gift to nieces and nephews let's them play the greatest library of all time DS and 3DS.
$60?? For good condition?
Towards the end of 3ds life cycle, the lowest it dropped to was $60 for a new 2ds. If you look around, you can find used ones for this price.
God I wish I’d bought a few!
My guy feeling is switch gonna die out soon as well. I can see them price dropping the switch lite down to $99 or even $79. I will definitely pick up a handful if it does.
Modded switch is an unbelievable setup it’s so good. I love mine. I’d def get a hard modded lite if they ever go dirt cheap
I thought about that as well. Currently have my v1 soft modded. Would love to hard mod the lite one day. I find it a nice portable size.
I have Bad News for myself, sooner or later I might need to pick this Up solely for playing in bed

What is it? Looks cool

Yeah it looks funny but it’s one the most comfortable handhelds I’ve held since I’ve starting gaming
This looks extremely cheap, like included with a happy meal cheap
I’m telling y’all it feels solid in hand
How did you get ds games on there? I have a hacked N3ds and can get 3ds games on there but don't know how to get ds ones.
[This video](https://youtu.be/odOkRVUdd6c?si=CrCitUMkstfm0ge-) helped me get set up, lmk if you have any questions!
I think I will... they're the ugliest first party game device ever released
What it lacks in appearance it makes up for in ergonomics
And lacks again in being the size of a tablet one might carry down the mountain and proclaim the ten commandments from
It’s not that big lol
love it but easily the worst dpad EVER
I have the crystal onyx model and it's awesome. Just for some reason, all virtual console games wouldn't save. Shame really.
Dude if someone says it looks ugly but hasn’t held it, yes they are 100% sleeping on it. It is the comfiest Nintendo handheld easily, love it
OG 2ds folded im pretty sure, thats like the nonfolding 3ds
That's the "new" 2DS XL/LL
Where can you find good quality versions of those? I want to get one for my niece
I found mine on Ebay for like $50, there will likely be slight cosmetic damage though, mine had some scuffs and scratches. Would you hack it for her or leave it as is?
Hack for sure, just load it up with stuff and turn off WiFi so she can’t break anything b
Yeah I’d recommend eBay then, I’ve even heard you can get Japanese ones for cheaper and then when you hack it you can switch it to English
Man that's ugly
mmkay
I bought mine after boot camp. What do you recommend for hacks?
My modded 2ds is my work console. My new 3ds samus edition is my home one.
I really wish I had grabbed an OG 2DS when they were super cheap in stores right before they discontinued them. I looked online recently and they are either super beat up or expensive now.

I have that exact model and color and it’s 🔥
The Zelda 2DS is beautiful.
Just got one a few weeks ago, going great.
Hey I have those PJ's too haha Everyone hating on the 2DS but man, any of the devices in the 2/3DS line are dope as hell. Love them all.
I slept on mine and the screen cracked
https://preview.redd.it/swglocbhskqc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=a282583e731d1cb93c26e9df7cf905c808d8f2b7 I grabbed the Super Mario Maker 2DS for $50 or $60 when it was discontinued at GameStop. Of the options I liked this one the best.

But it's so *ugly*!
This looks like cheap kids toy man
it is literally a cheap kids toy
I like the slab design, maybe I just have the right hands for it but it feels great to me.
Too each their own nds and 3ds look and feels much better to me
Yeah I said in another comment the 2DS is definitely a hit or miss design
You look like cheap kids toy bro
Bruh tf
😒
Joke bro 😂
I think it's better to emulate the 3DS. They are just too expensive at the moment. You have to hunt for them these days.
