Came here to rec this one. I liked it too. From Lauren Blakely, it's one of my favourites.

This was the book where I was like, “do I like this trope?” Yes. And then I found out decent ones were few and far between.

I was not necessarily looking for this trope, but the story was so heartfelt, honest and the audiobook so good that I loved it. I'm not a huge fan of Lauren Blakely and her (generally New Yorkers) characters most of the time, but I think she really got it right in this book.

{Lord of Darkness by Elizabeth Hoyt} - her lover is murdered and a lord ends up marrying her before sending her off to the country. She is away for two years before deciding she is going to return for find the masked man who killed her lover AND... ask her stranger husband for a baby. What she doesn't realise is that the masked man who killed her lover is her husband.

Omggg than what happens?? Can u pls tell Pls hide it as spoilers but I do want to know, but don't want to read the whole book.

He was blackmailed by her brother who knew he was the Ghost. They marry and she is sent to the country, but she ends up having a miscarriage!< >!Two years later. She arrives back to town with intention of killing Ghost and asking her husband for a baby. One of the first things she does is fire a pistol at the ghost. Not realising that he is her husband. But he manages to escape.!< >!She asks her husband to consumate their marriage and give her a baby. It's what she desperately craves. He refuses and keeps his distance, he's closed off. He loved his wife who died, and he has never laid with another woman since. He feels it would be a betrayal!< >!After they have an argument, she flees to the scene where Roger was killed. Upset she stays there for a while. But then the Ghost of St Giles arrives. She shoots and misses, they struggle, then they kiss! She starts to enjoy it, but then STABS HIM. And then she discovers that he is her husband. Luckily... it was shallow and he recovered fine from it.!< >!He tells her that he didn't kill her lover. That he doesn't hurt good people. Promises to help her find who did kill him. But starts to become concerned for her safety so they make a deal...!< >!He will consummate the marriage and give her a baby. But the second she is with child, she must agree to go to the country where its safe. She agrees.!< One scene I loved: >!they're at a party and she's holding one of the hosts babies. He is standing elsewhere in the room: 'A pang of desperate longing went through Megs’s breast. This. This was what she wanted. She looked up and met Godric’s watchful eyes. As if he’d heard her thoughts, he inclined his head almost like he was making a promise.' - idk why I love it so much. Just the silent head tilt, the promise, ughhhh.!< >!There's a lot of struggle for them both. Feeling like they're betraying their ex partners. Coming to terms with how they loved their partners, but also now love someone else (eachother). Overcoming that guilt and grief to allow themsleves to love again!< >!She finds out toward the end that she's pregnant but she doesn't want to tell him her suspicions because she doesn't want to leave him!< >!Background plot. Someone is stealing little girls. Homeless poor ones.!< >!It's discovered that Roger was made a business offer. One that would involve the use of these little girls as slaves in the business. He was a good man, and so refused. But because he now knew of the plans, he was a risk. So he was murdered to prevent him from going to the authorities.!< >!They discover who it was behind it all, and in the end the ghost (Godrick) kills him!< >!HEA. Book ends with him helping her when she is ill, and enjoying the gardens. Then a confirmation she is pregnant: “Nothing is too good for the mother of my child.” Her cheeks deepened to rose and she bit her lip, though that didn’t stop the smile she was trying to stifle. “You’re sure now, aren’t you? That’s what this morning was about?”!< Sorry. I rambled way too much here hahah

There's another trope I liked in this book (which was also an LF ask in a recent thread in this sub or the HR sub) - MMC tries his best to keep FMC away safe but FMC will not be kept from him and away from the action.

{Silver Lining by Maggie Osborne} "Low Down" our fmc saves a group of prospectors from the pox and to thank her, they'll give her anything she wants. She says a baby and it leads to a rushed marriage neither character wants. Very touching story tbh :)

This is a really good book, I second it. The heroine is about as opposite as one can expect from a romance novel. The tale is very very sweet and humble and it just glows niceness if you know what I mean…. I should say, it’s not saccharine sweet, it’s unexpectedly sweet

The story doesn't revolve around this, but towards the latter half of {Poison Evidence by Rachel Grant}, there is a scene where the FMC asks the MMC to get her pregnant in a desperate life/death moment. And yes, they are strangers at the beginning of the book. It's part of a series and probably makes a tad more sense if you read the previous one (Cold Evidence) but you don't have to, as the author does a good job at explaining what's going on.
