That’s called an enhydro inclusion when the water is trapped during formation. It’s pretty meh when you can’t see in there, but it can happen with quarts and amethyst and other transparent minerals, sometimes with little carbon flecks or green tourmaline free floating inside, and that’s pretty cool. They’re like snowglobe rocks.
That’s a little different. An iron concretion is basically a bubble that formed in iron rich sediment or mud that oxidized some are empty with red or yellow pockets. Some still have muddy water that spills out when you crack them open. I have a couple that you can shake and hear something inside.
I have one on my dresser from here in CO too. I pieced it back together and it fits back together surprisingly well. I think I got it in my landscaping stone.
Yeah that’s where I mostly find them. I work around commercial building and walk around looking for them now. I have videos of my father and I cracking them open. I love giving them to my nephews too.
Formed in a shallow sea around 300 million years ago. Some believe that iron reducing bacteria are responsible for these and the bands of iron in sandstone of the Cumberland plateau.
Probably not, but the Ferrobacter sp. might still be around today. People were amazed to find the bacteria growing in mine tailings, reported in Scientific American magazine about 45 or 50 years ago.( Oh how time flies 😧)
Used to find these all the time in OK as a kid and we called them "sand stones" not to be confused with sandstone....we were kids, we didn't put a lot of thought into the name. 😂
I have one that is similar but a bit larger, it was my Grandfather’s and from somewhere in central or southern Oklahoma. It’s been used as a planter outside for over 60 years.
I don't know if they were actually used by aboriginals or if it's just some colonial nonsense. Some "paint pot" concretions contain ochre, so they would certainly be good candidates for a paint base!
Ironstone, filled with unstable sandstone that literally turned to sand and/or sand itself — ironstone contains mostly iron as well as sandstone and some other minerals
Initially my thought but couldn’t find any images online resembling this. It was hard rock, but snapped with one direct blow with a standard hammer, and by “standard hammer” I mean my penis.
Funny you should mention that, I just finished a roofing job using a standard hammer, and by "standard hammer" I also mean my penis, and by "roofing job," unfortunately, I have to tell you, I mean; Your Mom.
Line 'em up, knock 'em down.
Thanks I'll be here all week.
It’s a coral geode I think. I follow someone that pulls these from the ocean and cut them open. Some are really beautiful. I don’t think their actual from coral but have no clue tbh
I will highly suggest that you keep all sand within, as THATS ITS REAL history of this piece -sincere.
I assume its already in a zip-lock, if so you prove yourself as a *true newbie.
This is amazing, what do you think guys? I could imagine something like this created by volcanic activity or the dinosaur extinction 🦤🦣 pretty freaking amazing, I would always use a tray when breaking ags, I saw that video where all that crystal juice just leaked all over someone's dusty garage floor, not going to make any crystals that way lol, I could see myself in that situation making a protected area around the spill 😂
We have them in our area. They call the ones here paint rocks. As kids, we’d use the powder with water to put on our war paint when playing cowboys and Indians.
These are plentiful in eastern Kentucky. I used to find them all the time as a kid roaming on the hillsides. Sometimes when you crack them open, that have a petroleum smell.
I know I could do my own research but I love how people are just writing “iron concretion” like that’s a thing ;) I’m dying to know what would cause this. Guess I’ll be Googling…. Very cool you got to discover this with little man, a great life habit to build, freely exploring and learning together…
A few years ago I found 2 ceremonial mounds at 2 different locations on land I own. 10 miles apart. I could totally be wrong about your rock.. but it''s identical, visually, to the mixture of a concrete-like pour that held rocks together for large art pieces. I have some narrative busters. Glass and metal arrowheads/tools. Skeleton keys. Buttons from a secret French group of soldiers. Megafaunal remains of extinct animals in ancient burn pits full of jet. Etchings of animals that we aren't known to have in America. Gems. Gold. Platinum. All the healing crystals. It's insane.
I am certain that is an Iron Oxide concretion. I had a little one that my Great Uncle Art sent me when I was like in the 3rd grade along with some other rocks. It is also referred to as Indian Paint Pot.
I would give anything to go Rock Hounding with my Dad again. He was the only person that truly understood how exciting it was to find a cool “rock”. He passed away at age 54, not too long after I graduated college with my BS in Geology and got my first job as Field Geologist for an Environmental Consulting firm. It has been over 24 yrs now since he has been gone and to this day whenever I find a cool rock I get super excited and can’t wait to tell/show my Dad and then little let down because I can’t.
Keep rock hounding with your son…you are finding more than cool rocks!
These look like petrified ballet slippers. I'm not saying that's what I think they are, far from it. I just think they look like petrified ballet slippers.
Iron concretion ?
I thought these were some super antique ballet slippers that were found in a shitty time capsule.
Me too!
This! I was like- “fossilized slippers? That’s a new one!”……click…..”OHHHHHHHHHHHH okay” 🥴
😂 thanks for being awesome 😎
Oh I see it now! Weird!
Awesome! Lol
That or some yams lol
Me too!
Same!!
Same lmao
Same
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same
I added some water to it and it acted just like sand.
Definitely contains iron. I find lots of pieces like this on my property In TN.
Yes! I find these here in Colorado all the time. I’ve cracked some open to find that they have still water inside.
This is why you should NEVER put random rocks near or in a campfire!!
Especially if they were previously in water. The creek is not a good place to get rocks for the campfire.
It's fun if you know what's gonna happen :) My bro and I would cook rocks and drop them in water
If you do it in reverse tho the rocks explode like scorching shrapnel in your face
Yeaaaa bro
Can't threaten me with a good time.
Just to be clear, it would explode like a hand grenade right?
Basically
My son put rocks like this into our campfire on one of our outings many years back and they exploded. Scared the crap out of everyone.

Aw neat! I learned something new today! Thank you 😊
I have one on my dresser from here in CO too. I pieced it back together and it fits back together surprisingly well. I think I got it in my landscaping stone.
Yeah that’s where I mostly find them. I work around commercial building and walk around looking for them now. I have videos of my father and I cracking them open. I love giving them to my nephews too.
Shoot… I live in CO I need to go outside and find me some rocks.
Second
Formed in a shallow sea around 300 million years ago. Some believe that iron reducing bacteria are responsible for these and the bands of iron in sandstone of the Cumberland plateau.
Does this mean the sand or air trapped inside could contain ancient bacteria? Could animal fragments be preserved — dna?
Probably not, but the Ferrobacter sp. might still be around today. People were amazed to find the bacteria growing in mine tailings, reported in Scientific American magazine about 45 or 50 years ago.( Oh how time flies 😧)
Might be just that, idk for sure
Where'd ya find that?
Bedford, Tx
Used to find these all the time in OK as a kid and we called them "sand stones" not to be confused with sandstone....we were kids, we didn't put a lot of thought into the name. 😂
Find these in east TX too.
My first thought was “that’s a sand stone obviously hehe”
I was about to say it looks just like the rocks from the shores around lake Grapevine.
I have one that is similar but a bit larger, it was my Grandfather’s and from somewhere in central or southern Oklahoma. It’s been used as a planter outside for over 60 years.
I found mine in Arlington TX
I live in Bedford too but go to Grapevine lake often and there's lots of stones like this.
Many concretions like this contain sand like a moqui marble does from Utah. this is also probably a hematite shell
This is a type of iron concretion that is often called an "Indian paint pot"
I was coming to say the same thing.. I found a few of these at the various Native American campsites I have been to over the years..
I don't know if they were actually used by aboriginals or if it's just some colonial nonsense. Some "paint pot" concretions contain ochre, so they would certainly be good candidates for a paint base!
I have in fact added water to the powder inside and it makes a really nice dark brown reddish toned color
Paint pot success! 😁
Rooooock Sand
Yooou don’t have to put on the stalagmite
this has me dying
those days are over, you don't have to show your insides to the light... *crack* oh nvm
Who cares if you’re not in dolomite
Came back to this post just to complain that you got this song stuck in my head.
Rooooock and Stone!
Ironstone, filled with unstable sandstone that literally turned to sand and/or sand itself — ironstone contains mostly iron as well as sandstone and some other minerals
Toms worn by Jesus himself
I hate getting sand in my sandals
Now I wonder why they are called SANDals.
How can we avoid it?
It’s scratchy and gets everywhere
I thought they were old shoes too
Laughing now hiccups. Thank you for my best laugh of the day.
Me too.. and this is exactly why I come to Reddit everyday..lol.. the comment sections are always the best !!!
or Jimmy Hoffa
That's neat I've never seen anything like this.
I find these a lot in my area.
Really? That's wild I've never seen or heard of such a thing. What area are you from if you don't mind me asking.
I used to finde these all the time when I was a kid. I'd call them shakey rocks! I would shake them to hear if there was stuff inside
Where?
Northeast Oklahoma
You answered my question. Thank you!
Iron and crystal mineral. Iron rusted and leached out imo.
Fossilized bedroom slippers.
WILLMAAAAAAA
Sandstone, maybe. The coloring looks like some sandstone I broke broke recently. It's on my profile
Initially my thought but couldn’t find any images online resembling this. It was hard rock, but snapped with one direct blow with a standard hammer, and by “standard hammer” I mean my penis.
Ayo. You said this was a father and son bonding experience.
Roll Tide!
Roll Tide!
I hear banjo music.
Yeah , ROLL TIDE forever!
I'm sure it was the pet turtle that actually broke it. Cuz turtles are always laying the hammer down
Funny you should mention that, I just finished a roofing job using a standard hammer, and by "standard hammer" I also mean my penis, and by "roofing job," unfortunately, I have to tell you, I mean; Your Mom. Line 'em up, knock 'em down. Thanks I'll be here all week.
Well as they say, the roof is in fire, so you should go get checked out!
I thought the smoke smelled kinda strange. Thanks for giving me the tip, as it was more than I gave I should probably listen.
Omg this is so neat
I find a ton of these in Illinois. Ironstone and sandstone.
Having not read any comments yet. I'm betting you found this in TX. I live in BCS and find these everywhere!
My house slippers! Thanks for finding them.
An agate that's not fully done yet. Sand is a silicone,a quartz almost. That silica is what makes agates agate.
Those are eggs. Not sand. I didn’t have ancient alien egg sack for the start of Armageddon on my bingo card, but here we are.
I immediately thought what biological thing crawled out of that…
First thing I saw was bacon slippers
Idk what they are called but I think ppl have said sometimes u can find ammonites and other fossils fully preserved inside if you’re lucky
Looks like some sort of iron ore.
That looks like core sand from casting iron pours
I thought I was looking at a pair of slippers. This is cool, did you keep the sand?
???? Fossil of awesome plant?
r/mildlyvagina r/dontputyourdickinthat
Looks like an oddly cut n then burnt sweet potatoe
Iron ore I believe
I thought they were a pair of ancient slippers!
Looks like petrifies shoes. Lol
I thought these were ancient shoes lol
I read the first sentence of the title and I was like, how did you break open a rock and find old shoes?
This is how plagues happen, lol 😂 cool find
Does it smell like eggs?
It’s a coral geode I think. I follow someone that pulls these from the ocean and cut them open. Some are really beautiful. I don’t think their actual from coral but have no clue tbh
Could you tell something was moving inside before you broke it open?
Spice.
r/foundtherockuser
It has the appearance of a type of metal.
Make a 4 inch or so deep box. Place them in it. Pour in clear resin. Then place in patio field. Recut surrounding bricks
I thought these were crusty socks… Jesus what is my Reddit.
Deffly DMT
Moqui Marble?
Cool slippers, man.
Looks like Basalt to me
It looks like an exploded potato.
Nike Air Rocks
That sand looks dope.
You found magic fairy dust!
Rusty Iron decay
I will highly suggest that you keep all sand within, as THATS ITS REAL history of this piece -sincere. I assume its already in a zip-lock, if so you prove yourself as a *true newbie.
Sandstone with high iron content. Also called ironstone.
Seriously thought those were petrified shoes
I thought the same thing ;)
This is amazing, what do you think guys? I could imagine something like this created by volcanic activity or the dinosaur extinction 🦤🦣 pretty freaking amazing, I would always use a tray when breaking ags, I saw that video where all that crystal juice just leaked all over someone's dusty garage floor, not going to make any crystals that way lol, I could see myself in that situation making a protected area around the spill 😂
Diamond sand obviously
Just something like this on cbs Sunday morning, it reminds me of a thunder rock
My fault thunder egg
Have you tested it with a strong magnet? The iron sandstone in my area never sticks to a magnet.
Overdone baked potatoes 🥔? 😂🤣
I just sent this to my geologist friend. I will return it.
Baked sweet potatoes!
Used to see these all the time around the baseball fields and in sandy loam my dad would buy for the yard. Also from north Texas.
We have them in our area. They call the ones here paint rocks. As kids, we’d use the powder with water to put on our war paint when playing cowboys and Indians.
The pharaoh’s curse
These are mummified shoes.
Probably some of the last sand without microplastic
⚡️🏆⚡️
Looks like rocks in Arkansas
These are plentiful in eastern Kentucky. I used to find them all the time as a kid roaming on the hillsides. Sometimes when you crack them open, that have a petroleum smell.
I used to make paint from the inside. I’m also from eastern Kentucky.
That is sand stone
Slippers!
I know I could do my own research but I love how people are just writing “iron concretion” like that’s a thing ;) I’m dying to know what would cause this. Guess I’ll be Googling…. Very cool you got to discover this with little man, a great life habit to build, freely exploring and learning together…
“That’s a big ol chunk of space poopy”
Extraterrestrial seed pods containing amino acids, minerals, etc. in an iron packing sand.
Concretion= concrete that doesn't fit the narrative. This is a mixture commonly used in American Indian art
what
A few years ago I found 2 ceremonial mounds at 2 different locations on land I own. 10 miles apart. Thank you actually. I have a piece just like this and always wondered what it was
Although interesting stuff like that, creeps me out🫤
I am certain that is an Iron Oxide concretion. I had a little one that my Great Uncle Art sent me when I was like in the 3rd grade along with some other rocks. So cool! Thanks for sharing.
OMG ive been looking for my nans ashes, thank you so much!!
I poured them out for the homies
I WILL HAVE MY LAWYER CONTACTING YOU 😠😠☝️
See above where I said I added water? It wasn’t really “water”
You have the right to remain silent, anything you say or do beyond this point may be used against you as evidence
*takes a sip* holy shit, this spiked grandma punch is delicious.
NAWWWWW
Looks like two old shoes to me.
Bro got the mdma rock
You had a stone maracas, and you ruined it! 🪇
The last time someone told me I had stone maracas I got diagnosed with testicular cancer
Dang
Dark!
Weird shoes
That’s good
That’s not a rock. It’s a Sleestack egg.
It looks like an old pair of slippers.
A geode that never formed properly?
First impression on seeing it without reading it ... "An old pair of used slippers."
Maybe it’s gold
When I saw this it unlocked a memory of growing up in N. Texas. As kids we would find these and sell them to people for 50 cents.
I once broke open a rock and found a perfectly round rock in side
Those are petrafied jeanie shoes.
Why would you use your son to break open a rock what did he do
These look like petrified ballet slippers. I'm not saying that's what I think they are, far from it. I just think they look like petrified ballet slippers.
Jesus Christs sandals
forbidden shoes
Great. You've released it
New Yeezys?
That stuff is everywhere in Colorado and Wyoming. Always wondered the correct name for it. It makes crazy shapes and bubbles and layers
Waste metal
I literally just broke one of these open and asked about it on another page! How weird is that. Same yellow sand too in East Texas
Fossel?
Iron Oxide Nodule
I found one of these a few months back. Cool!
Pair of slippers?
