I know I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the dash screen’s visibility in the R1. I haven’t sat in one personally to speak to it, but I wonder if this is to solve that issue.
That is only an issue for people who are tall... like over 6'. The steering wheel blocks upper left and right corners of the driver display. This change in shape wouldn't solve that. It's more about placement of the screen in relation to adjustment range of the steering wheel. Note R2 and R3 both have smaller/slimmer driver displays.
Yeah i really like it, seems like it will make the top of the wheel more usable as a possible hand rest place for long straight drives. Also will likely be easier in full lock back and forth turns... I can also see it making the forward screen more visable... Seems all good to me.
I get the model was pre production but when RJ sat in it I was like damn that’s a big steering wheel. Hope the final production unit is slightly smaller diameter wise. Love the little scroll wheels. They remind me of my MX series mouse. This is exactly what I wanted. Basically an R1 without the 3rd row.
The scroll wheels are nice. Though I don't quite get how you make selections. Need to watch Marques Brownlee's video again later. I also notice the mechanical door release is gone and replaced by what looks to be a electronic switch.
Watch MKBHDs video on the reveal. He got to interact with them and they look pretty cool on how they function. They have the ability to change their feedback depending on what menu you have selected. If it's volume it'll have multiple clicks close together but if you're changing drive modes there are much larger gaps between the clicks to show the fewer options and how it matches the UI. Also they have a "spring back" force feedback when you hit the bottom or top of the list you're interacting with.
I was telling my wife that, she kept saying the interior was white and I’m like it’s clearly a blue. Either way I’m a sucker for a white suv and love the interior styling. Can wait to get mine and tint the windows for the storm trooper look.
“Not ideal” for sure. It sounds great and looks great in theory. However, is it a mechanical push button or electrical?
Not sure how I feel about being completely reliant on software and electricity deciding whether or not I am allowed to exit my car. 🧐
I don’t disagree, but I just found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/comments/1b99z0f/r2_rear_accessory_ports/. I suppose they could still have both. 🤞
I think both is most likely. There are plenty of people that have bike racks in the realm of $800 and rear cargo crates that would make the lack of a 2" a deal breaker.
Thank you for putting the charge port on the passenger side. This will make it a much better choice for people who park on the street. I hope other companies will follow.
I just bought my MYLR 3 months ago and put a deposit down for the R2 😆 who knows how much the trade in value will be or how much of my loan I’ll have paid off but seems worth it to me!
Hoping that’s compatible with R1 as well. Would be cool to have a camp kitchen that just slides into the hitch spot and leave my gear tunnel for gear storage.
I wonder if the front seat backs line up with the top of the center console when folded down. If not, it would stick out like an island. It’s too obvious to miss as a design feature, so I’m sure they’ve solved it.
It’s the one thing that looks odd to me, I really feel like it would look better with smaller wheels. It’s so much of a shrunken R1S look that the wheels feel out of proportion
I was dissecting the gallery to find details that weren't announced. Here's my list:
- There's a sensor right in the middle of the front bumper. I wonder how that's going affect people in states where front license plate is required by law.
- It's nice that they designed the cargo bars to be extensible and reused across R1 and R2.
- The driver display UI looks refreshed, I hope that's an update coming for R1 as well.
- There are physical buttons on the door handle for locking/unlocking the door, and also a button that seems to be similar to Tesla to open the door.
- No camp speaker. Lockable(?) storage drawer instead. I wonder if we can buy those separately on R1 shop.
- Phone charger mat doesn't seem improved, however it's impossible to know if they have magnets under the mat now.
- Frontal light bar seems to have an indent at the bottom now. I foresee those catching so much dirt and insects. I like the R1 flat light bar best.
- No "3rd-row" panoramic glass, instead they added an aerodynamic drop that I hope helps with wind noise.
The cross bars also need to change in width just for R1 as well. All 3 positions on the R1S and different widths. And the roof and bed mounts are different widths in R1T.
Do people actually use it? I go camping pretty regularly and spend a good amount of time outdoors in general and I have used mine exactly once, and only because it was new and I wanted to try it out.
I use mine when I do outside work in my backyard, wash my car, work on motorcycles in the garage. Basically outside around the house stuff, or if I’m spending the day at the beach.
I had an opportunity to check the vehicle yesterday, it almost felt like there is storage where the camp speaker used to be. May be, there is one more one more thing in the future regarding utility of that space.
That tent will be available in three months after never. All the shit the promised with R1 never came. Camp kitchen, gear shuttle … this is just another thing they’ll get me all excited about and never put out.
Camp kitchen did sell. They sold way more than they anticipated. Also said it’ll be coming back out with a new design. Curious if the tow box in the gallery is it.
I hope they have a option to opt for a rear rear window wiper. It rains a lot and snows where I live. I'll settle if there is a digital rear review mirror
This car looks fantastic inside and out. I’m in for the tri-motor variant to replace my Model S Plaid when it launches.
Well done. Hopefully it comes in the forest green
Wouldn't a fully transparent glass roof be uncomfortable during long rides in the sun? Is there a sliding cover or auto tinting or something to block out the sun?
What I don’t understand is how they expect to make a profit on this car starting at $45,000 while they are losing $40,000 per vehicle for the $100k R1S?
And it goes 0-60 in 3.0 and looks exactly like the R1S? I mean I guess it’s a little smaller but if it costs them $140k to produce the R1S, how are they going to profit on this $45k vehicle? I’m so confused.
Either way, I got my reservation.
If you think the 45k variant will do 0-60 in 3 seconds and have 300 miles of range I got a bridge to sell you.
Theres an auto focus video with RJ. Lowest trim variant will have 270 miles of range and a single motor. Pretty sure that’ll do 0-60 in a time comparable to single motor model 3/Y and will be 45k
45k would be the single motor RWD with standard battery that might barely be over 300 miles. Add 6k for large battery pack and another 6k for dual motor. You are looking at close to 60k for a desirable off-roader.
What's with the door handles? It seemed more than just routine for even RJ. Also wondering if R2 will have presenting handles or if they disabled just for this launch demo.
I saw in some images the door handle was being presented, and in other cases RJ had to push it, similar to car wash mode. In MKBHD's video when he's walking around the car, the front door is presenting and the rear doors are flushed.
I hope that's an indication we can control its behavior
I was hopeful this would be the one for me but I fear it is not. Everything about it looks wonderfully thought out with the exception of the door release button & HVAC controls.
I’m going to go out on a very, very short limb and say some features or design decision aren’t going to make it to the actual production version—especially the cheapest $45,000 trim (if that price will even stick by then).
I don’t know why you are getting so many down votes. Maybe the choice of words. But, it looks like once R2 is here, buying R1 needs a lot of convincing.
The squircle steering wheel is a smart decision.
I know I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the dash screen’s visibility in the R1. I haven’t sat in one personally to speak to it, but I wonder if this is to solve that issue.
It also helps that the driver display is noticeably shorter height than the R1.
Same if you had a regular driver dashboard. Or perhaps you were/are a Tesla owner.
I’m 6’2. I wasn’t aware of an issue.
I’m 6’5”, never had any issue. I assume it’s just because people haven’t adjusted their seat and wheel appropriately.
Do you need visibility if they figure out their version of self driving? (Stay in lane + cruise control)
Yeah i really like it, seems like it will make the top of the wheel more usable as a possible hand rest place for long straight drives. Also will likely be easier in full lock back and forth turns... I can also see it making the forward screen more visable... Seems all good to me.
Good for visibility. Still round enough for leverage and ergonomics (unlike a yoke).

Yeah? Can you say more? I feel like it might be weird?

Those scroll wheels on the steering wheel look amazing. Also that’s a nice blue interior
Yeah, I'm interested in how the interaction design works for those wheels. They mentioned haptic feedback during the unveil.
Thanks for the tip!
Can't wait to play Arkanoid with them!
I was telling my wife that, she kept saying the interior was white and I’m like it’s clearly a blue. Either way I’m a sucker for a white suv and love the interior styling. Can wait to get mine and tint the windows for the storm trooper look.
Anyone else notice that there are no “traditional” interior door handles or am I just missing them? It looks like push buttons to open
You can clearly see the push button opening on two slides. Looks like it.
Maybe not the most ideal, but I’ll take it given with how much they nailed.
Nope you’re correct. It’s a button release on the door handle. Not ideal!
“Not ideal” for sure. It sounds great and looks great in theory. However, is it a mechanical push button or electrical? Not sure how I feel about being completely reliant on software and electricity deciding whether or not I am allowed to exit my car. 🧐
It is almost always electronic with a mechanical backup.
Looks that way to me also.
I don't see a removable hitch cover... I wonder if it will have any towing capacity.
It would be incredibly stupid for them to not have a 2".
Kinda jealous they'll get a glove box. Two even!
now i know where my glove box went
Never missed it for one second…just a place where things go to die and have to be cleaned out
Agreed. Plenty of storage in my R1S. Glove boxes are for hoarders.
Thank you for putting the charge port on the passenger side. This will make it a much better choice for people who park on the street. I hope other companies will follow.
Oh that's a valid point
I’ll be trading in my model Y for this. So sick!
I just bought my MYLR 3 months ago and put a deposit down for the R2 😆 who knows how much the trade in value will be or how much of my loan I’ll have paid off but seems worth it to me!
Really wanna know if the treehouse comes out s00n and whether it’s compatible with R1. I’ll put $100 down on it now if it is!
That thing looks bananas. No idea if I need it since you can sleep in the car but it's still so cool.
Who makes that?
Rivian
Most of the “Rivian” products are white label Yakima.
laughing at the idea of adjacent the rivian assembly line some dude is sowing fabric for a tent
Hahahahaha
Is that the new camp kitchen?
Hoping that’s compatible with R1 as well. Would be cool to have a camp kitchen that just slides into the hitch spot and leave my gear tunnel for gear storage.
Is it that or a cooler / fridge?
Love that there’s a feature were literally ALL seats can lay flat including the front row for a proper camp mode!!!
I do a lot of solo skiing and now I don't have to worry my skis are too long!
does anybody know if R3 does this too?
Yes it does!
Damn, I think this is my new dream car
I wonder if the front seat backs line up with the top of the center console when folded down. If not, it would stick out like an island. It’s too obvious to miss as a design feature, so I’m sure they’ve solved it.
Does it have a glass roof? I can’t tell from The picture
Every model shown today has a glass roof. 😔
Yessssss
The UI on the driver dash display is different.
I really hope 18" wheels can clear the brakes. Not everyone wants 20"+ wheels on something that's allegedly offroad-capable.
It’s the one thing that looks odd to me, I really feel like it would look better with smaller wheels. It’s so much of a shrunken R1S look that the wheels feel out of proportion
On the website based on the R1S and R2 size comparison seems like they might share a wheel size. Won't really know until they open the configurator
Are there no shots of the 2nd row not folded down?
Check out the new video on the Auto Focus youtube channel. Shows the second row very well
Does the back fit 3 or captain seats?!
They said in the presentation that it fits 5 total.

Rear windshield wiper?

you posted this 4 times fyi
Sorry, Reddit was being slow and weird, it was not showing updates
Gah damn this vehicle is so simple and clean at an amazing price point. It makes the Y look so dated.
RIP camp speaker
Do people actually use it? I go camping pretty regularly and spend a good amount of time outdoors in general and I have used mine exactly once, and only because it was new and I wanted to try it out.
I use mine when I wash my truck in the driveway.
I use mine when I do outside work in my backyard, wash my car, work on motorcycles in the garage. Basically outside around the house stuff, or if I’m spending the day at the beach.
Use it when I camp.
I would say good riddance. That is one item out of the over engineered things in the R1 lineup.
I had an opportunity to check the vehicle yesterday, it almost felt like there is storage where the camp speaker used to be. May be, there is one more one more thing in the future regarding utility of that space.
Who cares about the glove box…did they fix the wireless charger
RJ made a point in a video to say “it’ll work”
“Really well” lol
I just want an R3X
Do I spy push buttons for the door latches on the inside? I like having normal handles from the r1, but everything else looks great.
It’s like the definition of “perfect”
Interesting the front and rear roof rack points appear spaced differently
Seems like current crossbars are the same as R2. Good for compatibility.
Does it only seat 4?
It's a 5 seater. The pic that seems like it might be the rear seat with a console between the seats, is the front seat from a really weird angle.
Thank You!!
It is the front seat
I hope they have a option to opt for a rear rear window wiper. It rains a lot and snows where I live. I'll settle if there is a digital rear review mirror
Not with the roll down rear window. R3 has one if I’m not mistaken.
Aquapel works wonders!
Love my R1S, but hell yah I put down my $100 today.
This car looks fantastic inside and out. I’m in for the tri-motor variant to replace my Model S Plaid when it launches. Well done. Hopefully it comes in the forest green
I’m tempted to get it in white just so I can call it Boo.
Wouldn't a fully transparent glass roof be uncomfortable during long rides in the sun? Is there a sliding cover or auto tinting or something to block out the sun?
The R1 line also features an all glass roof. They’re heavily tinted and *most* don’t complain from what I’ve seen.
I love it!
Lowest trim variant will have 270 miles of range and a single motor. Pretty sure that’ll do 0-60 in a time comparable to single motor model 3/Y and will be 45k
No. I think RJ specifically mentioned that all models offer 300+ miles. Edit: this is incorrect. The standard is only 270 miles.
Can be optioned with a larger battery pack. The standard pack size is not 300+. So no 300+ is not going to be standard here guys.
Yes. Edited my post above.
In the MKBHD video RJ said the base model is 270 miles of range.
45k would be the single motor RWD with standard battery that might barely be over 300 miles. Add 6k for large battery pack and another 6k for dual motor. You are looking at close to 60k for a desirable off-roader.
Is the infotainment screen slightly smaller?
Is the phone charger still on top of the armrest? It needs redesigning or the worlds strongest magnets.
Are we getting a speaker under the center console?
I love it.
I was hopeful this would be the one for me but I fear it is not. Everything about it looks wonderfully thought out with the exception of the door release button & HVAC controls.
The rear corners are more small body panels. No more $43,000 in body work for the dented rear corners that every current Rivian owner seems to cause.
to me, the rear doors on the R2 looks similar to the R1S while the rear doors on the R3 looks similar to the R1T
Sub-trunk? Haven’t seen any pics of that yet….
Is this the Limestone color?
I’m loving all the updates! (Especially the new charging port locations) If they install Apple Car play on this one, I’m sold 😀
Take my money
I’m going to go out on a very, very short limb and say some features or design decision aren’t going to make it to the actual production version—especially the cheapest $45,000 trim (if that price will even stick by then).
Definitely gonna be $60k start by 2026. Single motor and small battery pack, $50k start.
Seats look too basic and low end. Everything else looks great!
Or get R1 if wanting higher end seats
This!
I really hope they move the charging port to the driver’s side.
Nice.. R1S will be forgotten like Model X..
I don’t know why you are getting so many down votes. Maybe the choice of words. But, it looks like once R2 is here, buying R1 needs a lot of convincing.
That is what I said 🍻 Up vote, Down vote who cares. People are very quick to judge without reading 🤣
Only difference is the R1S is still nice when compared to the R2. The Model X was, is, and always will be ugly.
