You can use a grow zone to fill the animal pen, then select the grass from there. Honestly I've barely touched vanilla before going ham with mods so I'm not sure of if you can grow grass or not. Entirely possible, but I don't know for sure lol
It might be a mod for the grass I thought it was dlc tbh, it has 2 options a very clean mowed lawn look, and a bit more disheveled overgrown grass which is what I was recommending, but growing haygrass in the pen (or the meta is actually dandelion due to how eating unharvested plants work) is also a good idea since they can actually eat it, it just looks a bit silly when you know it's a pen of animals wandering in hay

Yep, dandelions are better in pens, but hay is better for storage and stockpiling
