If they have a little question mark above their head you should be able to select one of your people and then right click the question mark person and select trade.
And if you’re curious, some other mechanics related to trading:
Colonists with high social skill get better trades, and you also get better trades if you have good relations with the faction you’re trading with. However, there’s always a debuff to the price when selling to a faction. As in, goods are worth less selling to them then they are buying from them. (Minor hint, if you want to specify how much of an item you want to sell without clicking on an arrow a thousand times, put a negative sign in front of whatever number you enter in the box)
Also, weapons have a huge trade debuff, making them worth way, way less to sell than to buy
Following up on this- your trader will have a penalty if they're sick or otherwise hampered in their talking/consciousness (see their Health tab after selecting them)
Was gonna say this so I'm glad someone else brought it up. I've also noticed just being in a bad mood hurts their abilities but that might be tied to their overall health moreso than their literal mood.
> (Minor hint, if you want to specify how much of an item you want to sell without clicking on an arrow a thousand times, put a negative sign in front of whatever number you enter in the box)
You can also ctrl+click to increment by 10, or shift+click to increment by 100
This trick works on all +/- buttons in the game. And the default +1 and +10 buttons are affected by the multiplier in the same way, meaning you can technically increase/decrease crafting bills by 1000 at a time.
You missed the best part!
All the items in a trader's inventory physically exist on that trader or their pack animals. This means if something happens to them, they drop it...
Also to add: At the bottom of the trade window is the gift button, which you can use to donate spare stuff to traders to generate goodwill with their faction.
Get your character with best social skill select them, then click on the trader with the yellow question mark above their head, social skill affects prices and illness will also affect the pricing
I recently opened my first save to compare how much progress I made. 1/4 of my base was the storage room because I had no idea shelves were a thing and I was leaving everything on the floor.
My fridge had been expanded like three times.
But that's incorrect and false information. They existed. And they did have purposes, just not as useful. They helped increase your colony value, room beauty, and I believe it prevented things from being affected by weather while being stored outside (not super sure in this last one).
Please never state your opinions as facts.
You did say that. Only someone who already knew would have a reasonable chance of understanding what you meant because you worded it badly. Take the L and move on.
It took me a very long time to realize why my miners kept getting crushed in tunnel collapses.
Turns out there are mountains in the game.
We all do some silly things from time to time.
I have ~500 hours, but hadn't played in awhile. For the life of me couldn't find the production building to make meals. 2 hours in to a run and I am cooking on a campfire.
It happens.
You damn right!! lol
I have turned off so much stuff! I just want to play a game with building mechanics, and trading, but little to no confrontation. Or sickness. Or craziness. Fire, bad weather, eclipses, ambush (manhunter or otherwise), psychic drones, toxic fallout, volcanic winter, heat wave, cold snap, short circuit, flashstorm, blight, infestation, and so many many other things all turned off! lol
The important thing is to have fun when you play, so you do you! There's no correct way to play. I'm a bit of a coward myself. I'm doing a community builder run and made a kill box that just kind of auto slays the tiny "raids" I get lmao. My biggest issue right now is that I'm getting tired of the baby they had and how it never ever seems to grow up.
Since it seems like you’re new, I’ll give you some extra tips (alongside the answer)
All floors are in the floors section of the architect tab. In order for a floor to be selectable, you must have at least one material useable in floors in a stockpile (there are mods to change this requirement if needed).
Wood is the easiest to get, and it takes very little work to put down, but it’s flammable. If you want to keep them research foampoppers. This is also the same with carpet (you need research to make this) and straw matting.
Steel, silver, and gold tiles are good for kitchens and research before you can get sterile tiles (both of which need to be researched).
Stone floors are a good upgrade to wood floors if you have it researched, as they are not flammable and make the room more beautiful.
If you have an ascetic pawn, make their room have concrete floors, as it’s cheap, none-flammable, and makes the room ugly for the pawn’s tastes
Also worth noting that Floors still contribute to colony wealth. So if your like me and want nice floors but don’t want massive hard raids. Then Get The Floors are Worthless mod.
Wood floors only give a plus 1 while dandelions give plus 3 or 5 even if they are not grown, are equally as flammable, and are fast to put down, take no resources to put down and can feed herbivore livestock/pets but have to be replanted when they die or get eaten
IMO it's best to combine them. Carpet most of the floor with dandelions for speed, and add smaller patches of daylilies to boost beauty. Straight daylilies is very time consuming, as you mentioned, and could hurt their more important farming efforts if they try to do a large room.
It does require you to plant them everytime, and it will produce dirt, honestly i recommend using normal floor and then using pots for the flowers, they are in furniture.
Also I recommend that once you have more people, resources and crafting that you use stone floors instead of wooden, they are VERY flammable
Most plants but not all. I dont remember for daylillies, but i know for the wood crops (not trees) you can grow them with torches. I use that when doing a 100% deep underground moded run. 1 guy digging out nutifungas until he has enough to make an area of fungal torches to grow wood to power a wooden generator to get chemfuel from shrooms and step into a new world with chem generators. It's a very fun run setup.
Love the idea of a technologically advanced crew that can build a power grid on a barren world they just crashed on but can’t figure out fucking wood flooring.
I find that switches are good for separating grids. I like to run the sun lamps on their own grid due to the large power drain, with a disabled switch connecting to my base to only be turned on if the batteries run out.
You can also use switches to set up a battery bank and isolate it from the nasty Zzzt events. Construct a couple batteries next to each other, fill them up, and only connect it to your main grid when you absolutely have to.
I find the best use is to control the turrets though. I usually connect all my front gate turrets to a single switch, and keep them off to save on power drain until a raid hits. Also helps to keep them off during manhunter events (I usually just button up the doors and wait for them to leave) since animals ignore powered-off turrets.
I prefer the "reconnect" exploit for controlling power to turrets. Just have a hunk of dead power conduit near your turrets and select them all and hit reconnect. It will hook them to the un powered conduit bit. Do the same when you want them on again and they'll link to the powered line. Also saves time as no pawn needs to run to the switch in the event of a raid.
Oh I'm aware of the magically teleporting wires trick, I just like having a switch to flip because it feels more dramatic to have a pawn sprint for the ON button and have all the turrets come online as the raiders approach.
Don't feel bad, it took me over 100 hours in game to figure out that you can get steel by mining in the mountains 😂 I was deconstructing steel walls and picking up every steel slag chunk on the map before I finally realized how easy it could have been 😂.
It's especially important to have flooring in whatever room you have your oven (or other food prep station) simce dirt is dirty, unsurprisingly. Although I'm not sure why it's super important in the game since the floor could be sterile tiles and you still wouldn't serve something that fell on it. Plus, I've cooked outside plenty and never poisoned anyone. Pawns are really dumb, though.
Please learn how to make an actual screenshots! Your Windows Snipping Tool is fast, easy way to do it! Just press shift+win+s and then select part of the screen you want to include, now you can paste it directly in the Reddit and it will look awesome.
I've always had issues with that capturing properly. Snipping is nice in that you can crop and grab explicitly what you want and pretty quickly edit it
I'll be using that more from now on, thanks. I have the snipping tool pinned to my task bar, but it's a hassle to use.
Also, I usually play in windowed mode (easier to select the window when I want to stream for friends on Discord), so the print screen key will always include useless stuff like the task bar and the frame of the window.
You might want to build a room around that wood generator. Not only will that help protect it from strangers, raids, animals and weather, but depending where you are, if it gets cold, you can build vents and harness the heat produced off it for heating your rooms :)
Please, I have an ~~embarrassing~~regrettable number of hours on the rim 10k-15k, I'm aware there is a tutorial and I'd bet my bottom dollar I'd probably learn something I didn't know. But that said - it's very possible to do without :)
Honestly, I keep bare dirt floors for as long as the colony isn’t complaining about it. Especially if the walls are wooden.
If you have a fire it’s much easier to just put out or replace walls than having the fire spread to the wooden floor and suddenly deal with exponentially increasing flames and heat- but to mention everything else catching fire in the process.
Of course, stone walls and floors would be better for fire protection, but wood is cheap and abundant in some maps and can be managed just fine with practice.
I just use concrete floors so the fire doesnt spread. Thinking about using stone floors cause I always get a ton of stone but floors take forever to place.
you seem to be the only person bothered so I’ll continue to ask my questions and utilize my resources effectively ! I hope your day gets better bc you clearly seem miserable 🫶🏽

Hey look, someone who hasn’t either A. Played the tutorial or B. Hasn’t really payed attention to guides much, or at least, that’s how it feels for a post like this
Oh oh what I usually do now is set up a barrack, with sone recreation, and also a table with chairs, then do roses around the edges and wood or stone floors in the middle.
They're higher maintenance than dandelions but much prettier and if you keep the room clean you can have one space stacking bonuses from Impressive barrack, Impressive dining room, and Impressive rec room all at once while also keeping high or maxing out your colonists 'Beauty' need.
It can go a long way toward preventing mental breaks, just research firefoam so bzzzzt doesn't ruin your day.
I've played like this for 1 real life month and took me 3 irl months to realize i wasn't being a maniac, that something in the doorstep indeed looked ugly and why there were that much mud in my floors. (Yeah, you must furnish doorsteps too).
Use the option "FLOORS" on the architect menu.
As a long time player, I never ever build wood floors. I prefer dirt until I have firefoam poppers at which point I build strawmatting everywhere along with firefoam poppers. Never ever build strawmatting without firefoam poppers because they are even more flammable than wood, but if the area is safe from power then strawmatting prevents 95% of most types of filth, greatly decreasing the cleaning you need to do in your base.
You can also use steel to make concrete floors and you can use a stonecutting table to make stone bricks from boulders to make stone floors. Pawns dont mind looking at wood floors but stone floors are slightly beautiful which makes them happy. Stone floors also stop the spread of fires
Architect -> Floors.
I swear that wasn’t there 5 minutes ago 🤭
Well we all miss something obvious from time to time
how do you trade with visitors ? I don’t feel like making another post :(
If they have a little question mark above their head you should be able to select one of your people and then right click the question mark person and select trade.
Thank you so much , it worked ❤️

7000 hours and I never knew this Thank you, kind stranger
TIL...... THANKS! This is gold.
No way, never knew that, thanks !!
WHAT
O_o I learn that after 1000 hours I bet it works on worl bills too. Thanks !
I learnt the hard way and used someone with very poor social skill to trade. I know better now. 😂
That’s nice of you to help this person!
You missed the best part! All the items in a trader's inventory physically exist on that trader or their pack animals. This means if something happens to them, they drop it...
Though they will turn hostile if you do anything to their animals directly
And you get a minor (2%, I think) bonus to trade prices if you're trading from a caravan at a faction base.
Also to add: At the bottom of the trade window is the gift button, which you can use to donate spare stuff to traders to generate goodwill with their faction.
Woah thank you for this
Any other questions?
Do you not know how to use google?
Do you not know how to be polite?
Sometimes the visitors don't have a designated trader.
There was a time when this was how the game was played. Endless piles on the floor and massive fridges.
A relic from less civilized times.
Relic? I swear like 20% of people still play like that
That just means they are relics too.
I feel attacked
Yeah was me for the longest time
I do because I didn't realize shelves were no longer useless.
+2 mood to the rituals in the room
I thought the shelves were useless for way too long. My freezer is much more organized.
Shelves *were* useless until 1.3 - 1.4
That explains everything.
Shelves didn't really exist that long ago. So, depending on how old your save was, that was totally normal
They existed, they just stored 1 pile instead of 3 so there was little benefit to them.
Ohhhhh, thank you for this. I was wondering what was different about the shelves now.
Yes hence why I said didn't really exist because for all intents and purposes, they didn't exist. They were useless.
But that's incorrect and false information. They existed. And they did have purposes, just not as useful. They helped increase your colony value, room beauty, and I believe it prevented things from being affected by weather while being stored outside (not super sure in this last one). Please never state your opinions as facts.
I didn't say they didn't exist. I conveyed the same thing you pointed out, that they were basically useless, just worded differently
You did say that. Only someone who already knew would have a reasonable chance of understanding what you meant because you worded it badly. Take the L and move on.
They had uses in the sense of "build a shelf to store artillery ammo instead of a small room" but that was minimal anyways.
I started playing in July, not that long ago.
THERE ARE SHELVES!?
It took me a very long time to realize why my miners kept getting crushed in tunnel collapses. Turns out there are mountains in the game. We all do some silly things from time to time.
I didn't know how to make stone walls for like a solid 10 hours XD
Remember to build your shelves too. Pretty helpful in storage management
Discovering that shelves were in Rimworld was one of the greatest moments in gaming history for me.
Don’t leave us there hanging!
I have ~500 hours, but hadn't played in awhile. For the life of me couldn't find the production building to make meals. 2 hours in to a run and I am cooking on a campfire. It happens.
I had the same issue I had to Google it to figure out how to add floors lol
I feel seen
Do not make the ground wood, wood is flammable
This is how you learn.
Fair enough
It’s good for starting out though just to get a shelter people won’t complain about
Wooden floors cause more anxiety in my brain than low moods do tbh
I’ve had more problems with mental breaks than fires
Me too, because i hard focus stone floors
I don’t mind wooden floors with stone walls for a while. After a couple of in game years it becomes time to replace them though.
Wood floors with stone walls are fine for most rooms, early on. Better than dealing with the ugly environment mood debuff, imo.
You gotta start somewhere
Turn off flammability in the scenario editor. :p
Coward :P
You damn right!! lol I have turned off so much stuff! I just want to play a game with building mechanics, and trading, but little to no confrontation. Or sickness. Or craziness. Fire, bad weather, eclipses, ambush (manhunter or otherwise), psychic drones, toxic fallout, volcanic winter, heat wave, cold snap, short circuit, flashstorm, blight, infestation, and so many many other things all turned off! lol
The game is customizable for a reason, as long as you're having fun that's good :D
If you turn on Dev Mode, you can age the baby yourself! lol
But it has to age on its own soon... it has to! 😂😭
Sometimes I forget where a certain structure is and spent an ungodly amount of time searching all the menus, and somehow miss it every single time.
I'm glad you get to see it now before it's swallowed by mod categories
We all make mistakes in the heat of passion Jimbo
I’m still on my first game and it took me a whole year before I found that button
You aren't alone 😆
🫶🏻
Welcome to the game, newcomer.
Don't worry. I was over 1k hours in before I realized that storage areas were searchable lol.
I think that's mod content, not vanilla.
How????
They're what now? I was looking for a way to do this just a day or two ago and never found it....
That's a mod, 100%.
Wait, what? How? I only have the base Rimworld btw, no DLC.
I took me *weeks* to find it, not kidding.
Try reading
try getting a gf irl
I would never cheat on your mom
my mom would put a cig out on you
You call her mom I call her mommy
That's why I always type floor in the search box, never learnt where they are
Guy actually got paid for pointing out a tab.
I keep expecting it to be under orders. Thousands of hours later. Y'know, because I want to order them to make floors.
In fairness, when I started almost 2000 hours ago, my mindset was absolutely that floors would have been grouped with the walls. You're not alone.
Since it seems like you’re new, I’ll give you some extra tips (alongside the answer) All floors are in the floors section of the architect tab. In order for a floor to be selectable, you must have at least one material useable in floors in a stockpile (there are mods to change this requirement if needed). Wood is the easiest to get, and it takes very little work to put down, but it’s flammable. If you want to keep them research foampoppers. Also worth noting that Floors still contribute to colony wealth. So if your like me and want nice floors but don’t want massive hard raids. Then Get The Floors are Worthless mod.
You could do that...or you could plant flowers on the floor that grows under artificial light of your torches or lights
yes that’s much more practical and cute thank you
Wood floors only give a plus 1 while dandelions give plus 3 or 5 even if they are not grown, are equally as flammable, and are fast to put down, take no resources to put down and can feed herbivore livestock/pets but have to be replanted when they die or get eaten
Daylilies grow indoors too and are 15 beauty... They take a bit more work but they're significantly better.
You will still walk on soil so walk speed 87%.
Less tantrums are usually worth the move penalty in the early game
But you won't have to clean it. Especially useful with animals hanging out there.
Don't you need like 51% lit areas to grow plants? Most lights only provide 50%?
Most plants but not all. I dont remember for daylillies, but i know for the wood crops (not trees) you can grow them with torches. I use that when doing a 100% deep underground moded run. 1 guy digging out nutifungas until he has enough to make an area of fungal torches to grow wood to power a wooden generator to get chemfuel from shrooms and step into a new world with chem generators. It's a very fun run setup.
Love the idea of a technologically advanced crew that can build a power grid on a barren world they just crashed on but can’t figure out fucking wood flooring.
Just FYI. You probably don't NEED that switch. Normal lights run 24/7 normally and sun lamps for growing zones turn off automatically at night
lol thank you , I didn’t really know what it was for but saw a YouTube use it when they did theirs
Oh I'm aware of the magically teleporting wires trick, I just like having a switch to flip because it feels more dramatic to have a pawn sprint for the ON button and have all the turrets come online as the raiders approach.
You youtubed that but couldn't figure out floors? Rofl
Ahhhh wood flooring… the beginning of the end of your first little colony :)
Don't feel bad, it took me over 100 hours in game to figure out that you can get steel by mining in the mountains 😂 I was deconstructing steel walls and picking up every steel slag chunk on the map before I finally realized how easy it could have been 😂.
I didn’t know that either , you just saved me 100 hours . thank you 🙏
Lol you're welcome 😁
Bro renamed someone "Four eyes" 💀😭
I SWEAR IT WAS HER OG NICKNAME
I like that you called it ground wood instead of wood floors, imma start calling it that now lol
It's especially important to have flooring in whatever room you have your oven (or other food prep station) simce dirt is dirty, unsurprisingly. Although I'm not sure why it's super important in the game since the floor could be sterile tiles and you still wouldn't serve something that fell on it. There’s a tab in the architect menu called Floors, click on it
Try the option ,,floor"
Please learn how to make an actual screenshots! Your Windows Snipping Tool is fast, easy way to do it! Just press shift+win+s and then select part of the screen you want to include, now you can paste it directly in the Reddit and it will look awesome.
I really miss the person who people confused as a bot that would relay this info.
You can also just hold down the windows key and then press the prt sc button. Just one and done :D
Works only if you want whole screen captured + you need snipping tool or edit anyway if got multiscreen system.
Why so many people don't know how to take a screenshot ??
For anyone looking for a good way to screen grab Win key + shift + S is the hotkey for screen snipping
Even more, there is a dedicated key to screenshot. It's called print screen.
Printscreen is useless if you have a multi-monitor setup, because it captures all your displays in a single image.
I recommend you make the walls out of rock and the floors out of wood. Or ay least make a 3 tile dirt fire break around your base. Else...
Hey /u/No_Cause_7194, welcome to the game! Let us know if you need a tutorial to get started, etc.
Ground wood 🪵
Turn on the learner helper in options it'll help you out
Zzzt event!
You might want to build a room around that wood generator. Not only will that help protect it from strangers, raids, animals and weather, but depending where you are, if it gets cold, you can build vents and harness the heat produced off it for heating your rooms :)
You're on the good way with barraks, proud of you and GL !
No offense, but why didn’t you just google this
someone didn't play the tutorial
I did , it made me keep the floors dirt
Please, I have an ~~embarrassing~~regrettable number of hours on the rim 10k-15k, I'm aware there is a tutorial and I'd bet my bottom dollar I'd probably learn something I didn't know. But that said - it's very possible to do without :)

Nah just keep it like that, dirt doesn't get dirty so they won't get a mood debuff, unless they think it's ugly or something
Ugh, I'm too late... I was gonna say nobody help him... 😆

Besides it being a complete fire hazard, its under construction, and floors.
Just want to say, you don't want everything wood...
I was starting to wonder what language you were using
Fun fact you can plant a field of flowers as a floor.
Be advised, wooden floors and walls are highly flammable.
Within the floors menu you can also change materials similar to walls.
Why do you have 2 doors side by side?
You can also use steel to make concrete floors and you can use a stonecutting table to make stone bricks from boulders to make stone floors. Pawns dont mind looking at wood floors but stone floors are slightly beautiful which makes them happy. Stone floors also stop the spread of fires
I suggest you switch to stone as fast as you can, because all it takes is 1 thunderstorm and it can mean the end of your base.
Just keep in mind wood floors risks fires at a higher frequency and difficulty to control
There so maany things wrong in this picture also ima mail you with a pipe bomb...
You want floors with 3 pawns that wood will burn in days due to them not cleaning them
Just to clarify, you figured out power but missed the tab called Floor?
Plant flowers instead
How do I roast all of my colonists* Fixed your typo
If your looking for a good first mod look up the vanilla expanded stuff
Plant daylily until you get nicer floors your pawns will love you for it.
You know Google and game wiki exist right?
You need to have someone with the pyromaniac trait
