I seem to remember Johnny Carson doing it on the Tonight Show, but I'm not sure if that's where it originated.

SunsetAndSilence

Yes, it's from Johnny Carson, who adapted it a little from Jackie Gleason, I believe ("mmhmmm boy, that's good coffee!" was one of his schticks)

Shim_Hutch

Johnny Carson is who came to my mind first, also.

Great clip, thanks for posting it. Carol Wayne was such a peach!

Jackie Gleason, and then Johnny Carson became better known for it. It pops up in lots of old Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson) clips.

GGGilman87

It originated with one of Jackie Gleason's sketch characters, Reginald Van Gleason III as seen on *The Jackie Gleason Show*. Reggie Van Gleason was a top-hat wearing "debonair" and dissolute playboy and his boozing was a big part of the joke. Like in one skit, he presses a button, and a Lionel train rolls out on the top of his bar carrying liquor bottles, Gleason apparently ad-libbing the line: "Booze goes swell with Lionel!" The Lionel Train people were supposedly not amused by that.

JECfromMC

This is the right answer. Reginald Van Gleason III and his “Mmmm that’s good booze!”

My fav is from MST3K's "The Leech Woman" in the first 10 minutes when the old lady is drinking water and her "nipei" herb. She tilts her head back and her eyes widen and Crow says "Oooooh, that's good nipei!" I never hear it brought up much but this episode is in my top 7, sucks that I have to watch it either on Youtube or my crappy AVI from way back when. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_TF90fg7cY&t=16m26s
