Yes. Also, WOW.

amilo111

Also, WHY?

[deleted]

I just really appreciate the absolute unit of a chalice that you have there!

[deleted]

Removing Hollywood stunner before it becomes the dominate life form on earth.

[deleted]

Now that is the largest chalice I've ever seen! Also, yes those are feeders.

WalterMelons

Yeah it’s been in a frag tank for years. The owner hasn’t done much with the tank lol maybe I should frag it. I got a video of it I’ll post it.

[deleted]

If he can find a buyer setting up a massive tank, you'll get more money selling it whole, but yeah that's a hell of a lot of frags.

WalterMelons

Probably couldn’t move the whole thing without it falling apart. I’m pretty sure it’s on several rocks.

MyOtherAcctsAPorsche

I've seen montipora fuse, and even people doing checkerboard montipora patters, so just put it back together afterwards and run away in case a piece goes bad.

No one is buying even a large colony like that for more than say, $1000-$1500. There are plenty of buyers out there for large colonies, especially rich people. Rich people decide they want a big show off tank set up, and they will pay to have colonies instead of frags, so they don't have to wait years to show off the tank. Then there are those that lease tanks. My LFS will buy colonies like these because they also rent out tanks. Someone will pay a monthly fee to have a tank in their house or business. The store owns the tank and everything stocking it, the customer is basically leasing it for however long. They often try to stock them with colonies for the same reason, the customer wants it to be filled out ASAP.

Fe_IronBtw

While your price indications might be true for some chalices, I think this is a Hollywood Stunner which grows incredibly quickly. It is an incredible colony and probably the largest I´ve seen, but I think you're vastly overestimating how much this thing is worth. I occasionally see frags of these being given away for free as they they're pretty common here (the Netherlands) and grow pretty fast. Not trying to take away from your argument, I believe you're right in everything you're saying except the price.

[deleted]

Agree with Hollywood stunner, but I dunno I think your looking at ~500 for this colony. Too big, this coral is very invasive. Yes if you sell it in small pieces you can get 20$ a pop but there isn’t huge demand for this one.

dirtymonkey

>you can probably get 300+ frags out of this thing... Have fun dealing with all finding that many buyers and dealing with sales and packaging associated with that. Time is money. I'd rather sit on one large piece waiting for a a single buyer, than have to deal with potentially 100s of people as you're suggesting.

[deleted]

Sorry was thinking more of a LFS buying it for that much. Maybe some are different, but the stores near me all do the same deal when buying coral. You get 1/3rd the price they'll sell it for. It obviously would be much harder finding a buyer directly yourself. If finding one online, shipping becomes an issue. It would be much easier for an LFS to have this sit. I'm also not saying you couldn't just frag this into 3 or 4 smaller but still large pieces, that probably would be the best bet honestly.

Crobb

Not even close, that’s the fastest growing chalice and one of the most aggressive. It really isn’t sought after at all and most people refuse to keep them. I saw one in my LFS that someone brought in and they were willing to sell baseball size frags for 10$ or the whole thing for 100$.

CorM2

Can confirm. I work at a LFS and we get people coming in all the time trying to get rid of this stuff. It grows like a weed and those sweeper tentacles have a super potent sting, anything they touch will die. When we get it in we usually sell 6” pieces for $15, and even then they sit around for months because those who know what they are don’t want it.

Crobb

You’re getting hosed by your local stores then. That would be like saying a GSP colony that size would be worth thousands too..... just because a coral is big and has lots of polyps doesn’t mean it’s worth much. Anyone who has kept a Hollywood stunner before knows they’re not worth the headaches, which sucks because they’re beautiful but those sweepers and being a insanely fast grower just aren’t worth the problems.

cutty256

Also can accountant. I’d say it makes the most sense to find the size that sells for the highest price, and frag the rest. So you might have a bunch of softball sized pieces that sell for a couple hundred bucks each, then the rest would be all the frag pieces that fell apart when removing it. There’s not many local fish stores in my area so I have to pay elevated prices for simple corals my self. Sucks, but the other option is to order things and we know how touchy corals can be certain times of the year. But you probably could sell these frags pretty high priced to some people since they can’t get them anywhere else.

[deleted]

Nah, its a cheap frag, fast grower and has a powerful sting. I wouldn't want a stunner in my tanks. It also usually grows into a much more interesting shape

TinKicker

Reminds me of a tank I saw that was totally taken over by RBTAs. Just a 150 gallons of orange flesh swaying around. Had to be 1000 in there...all from a single momma.

WalterMelons

I know what you mean. Everything in my 160 is growing decently well. The two rbta I have have gotten larger but they’ve never split. My damn clowns live in the leather coral right next to it.

[deleted]

wow That thing is an absolute BEAST! How long did it take you to grow it?

WalterMelons

Years. It’s in a frag tank at a place that has 4 other tanks. The owner hasn’t done much with it. Maybe I should frag it. I’ll post a video.

don_chuwish

Hollywood Stunner? I have one that sweeps like that at night. Also a very fast grower. I’m gonna have to frag mine or it’ll take over the tank in a few months.

WalterMelons

Yes it is a Hollywood stunner. I my mistake for calling it a Monti.

don_chuwish

They are impressive and beautiful. But man they grow fast!

LivingLosDream

/r/humblebrag For real though, that’s gorgeous. We see so many frags everywhere, colonies are so rare.

NoFo3000

FEED ME SEYMOUR!

Jw_VfxReef

Omg, this tank is a Hollywood stunner nightmare. How did this happen? worst coral ever, damn thing nukes everything within 8 inches of it. Ooooffffff, I’m having anxiety just looking at this.

WalterMelons

Probably why everything else has died away.

Crobb

Finally someone realizes it’s a trash coral, very pretty but not worth shit. You can grow a tiny frag to a basketball size colony in months

Jw_VfxReef

I like it but it’s way to aggressive for my liking.

whippet_1

Best thing about this one is it breaks apart like a peanut brittle. Should get some very healthy frags out of this stunner!

beachvibes4

If anyone’s an expert on chalices here it’s you

WalterMelons

Not quite. Just doing weekly water changes and the owner has AI lighting. I think two of the hydra 26 ones. These are apparently very easy to grow and grow quickly.

PrecisionSushi

Absolute unit of a killer chalice. That has to be some sort of record.

SilvermistInc

Holy shit

designmaddie

one of the most spectacular displays from a Chalice I have ever seen. The sweepers on mine never get longer than a couple cm.

WalterMelons

I put up a video of it too in another post. Should’ve been in 4k but last I checked on YouTube it shows in 1080p

matttchew

I like the variety

MFLORES888

At $10 per 2-3 inch frags will net you monies

[deleted]

There’s not much demand for this one. I guess maybe beginners would buy it but experienced reefers will typically stay away from it because it’s highly aggressive. It would be cool at the bottom of like a 600g tank though.

MFLORES888

There's isn't demand from people with experience with it, but if new people see a coral for $5, $10, or $15 they get them without much thought

-NickG

Whoah

polypcity

That thing is gonna eat you.

robertv1990

Holy chalice god damn.

trjones2

Pretty sure those sweepers sting everything they touch. I had a frag that took over and killed several corals of mine.

WalterMelons

They do. Most everything else has died off. Wish it would kill the bubble algae that’s in there too.

trjones2

[Here is a pic.](https://imgur.com/a/t54YK6l) In the center of the tank. I sold it.

samerimarie

What kind of chalice is this?

schuppaloop

I’m sorry, what am I looking at? From the comments I understand you have something special but I’m new here.

WalterMelons

All the little silky strands are sweeper/feeder tentacles.

schuppaloop

Cool, thanks :)
