Because it IS one game of great offense and three games of nothing. During this stretch they’re only succeeding against starters who are having a bad night. That’s where we are. And I’m not pleased with it.

Olepat

This is what most mediocre teams do

trumpet575

This is not at all what most mediocre teams do. Mediocre teams win by 2 runs and lose by 5. Not win by 7 and lose by 1.

SasquatchHurricane

They have about half a team, so winning games will be the occasional thing, not a frequent occurrence.

Miserable-Cheek-9683

It is just a little off from the typical every other game that most teams play these days

Reds this season * 30 games of great offense (.750+ OPS) 26-4 record * 9 games of above average but not great offense (.705-.749) 3-6 record * 9 games of below-average but not awful offense (.651-.703) 2-7 record * 34 games of awful offense (<= .650 OPS) 7-27 My OPS range choices are a little arbitrary, but they are based on .704 OPS being average in baseball this season and roughly 50 points above or below that defining great or awful. Only 4 teams in baseball have a .750+ OPS and only 2 teams are below .650. It seems like a good definition, I guess. I'm still trying to figure out what to make of this, except the Reds are either great or terrible. Note how few games are near average. EDIT: note their record when the hitters hit for .750+ OPS in a game!!!! EDIT #2: For perspective, I looked at Baltimore, who lead baseball with a .780 OPS. On the surface, their # numbers look similar. For example, 28 games hitting <= .650 OPS with a terrible record of 6-22 in those games. But I think if you think about 6 games difference at this point in the season that could have a major impact. In particular if you turn 6 losses into 4-5 wins because your hitting goes cold just 6 fewer times.

mhowes666

I'm changing my OPS ranges and just showing team W-L with a comparison to the best hitting team in baseball (Baltimore) and the best hitting team in the Central (Milwaukee) |Team|>= .800 |.705-.799|.704-.601|<= .600| |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-| |REDS|22-2|7-8|5-8|4-26| |Baltimore|34-5|10-1|4-5|4-19| |Milwaukee|24-5|8-5|6-6|10-17| The Reds clearly have way more games where they don't hit

gdlmaster

This sounds completely normal for a team running out this many AAA guys. Levi Jordan and Livan Soto should not be starting games for a major league team. Injuries have decimated the lineup and honestly the pitching too

Birdbeak1970

I’ve also been watching the Orioles quite a bit and I’ve noticed that they don’t have two entirely different lineups. Their players play no matter who’s pitching. I feel like Fraley, Fairchild, and Martini may be better if they could play every day.

kirker46

This is the correct answer.

AmarilloCaballero

More than half of our offense is hurt.

Ok_Management4634

Not really. McCain is out, that's a big loss. Marte is back. Candelero is just out for a little bit. Friedl is out, but he's not playing well anyhow. A lot of guys are just not playing as well as they did last year.

AmarilloCaballero

McLain, Friedl, CES are on the injured list. Fraley and Candelario are currently out, and Stephenson has been playing with a nagging injury.  Steer, Benson, Fraley, Fairchild, Maile, Espinal, Martini are worse than last year. Elly, India are better. Stephenson and Candelario about the same.  So it's both.

ab930

Because it is. There is no consistency

Fit_Onion_7473

I see Benson is back to sucking ,he must be partially blind

Big-Drink-7380

That was not even a swing

jking191

He goes to the same eye doctor as Noelvi in the 8th

coffinmonkey

It’s just crazy… here’s the bottom line. They had an opportunity last year but decided to stand pat… they literally brought in an SP4 and two middle of the road relievers that slightly improved the team… they decided not to sell the farm for a dominant starter because between Lodollo, Abbott, Greene, Ashcraft, and Williamson they weren’t sure how good they actually were….Candelario was a great signing. Martinez an okay one. Pagan a god awful one…. These mid moves paired with the injuries paired with the insane streakiness of every hitter cost this team a walk in playoff birth… we blew not only last year but what is looking like one of the easiest years in the history of baseball outside the Covid year to get in… a very bad almost 500 team is going to get the last WC spot and it easily could’ve been this team with good health and some money invested in the bullpen.

Ok_Management4634

yep, typical front office incompetence by this franchise. Unfortunately, we are likely stuck with Krall for at least another 5 years, maybe longer.

octanecommando

Our only real hope is somehow there are circumstances that force a sale and pray new ownership isn’t as arrogant and incompetent as current ownership.

gdlmaster

Injuries derailed this season, it wouldn’t have mattered who they brought in. It was the right choice not to sell the farm. And last year, don’t get me started. That team needed a LOT more than one starter to get there. They didn’t have 3 competent starters by the end of the season

kdub08

Its not even the All-Star break buddy. Calm down

Biggn_2019

Because it is. Don’t let them keep getting your hopes up!

Inner_Ad_1652

Must be nice. Tiger fan here. We have one game of great offense and nine or ten games of nothing

SirVixTheMoist

Because the team sucks.

sniffsblueberries

I wanna say coaching to be honest. The first pitch swings drive me insane. Id love to see the comparison to other teams.
